This book is incredibly uplifting. It is an authentic account of a child sentenced to life in prison, and how that child grew into a man who found life’s purpose through education, and the help of others. The power of books and education have never been more true. This is a story of one mans journey, but really it’s the life experience of so many people in our nations prisons. This will make you think about prison reform, and specifically about reforming the way we overpunish “violent†youthful offenders.
So much more than a spectacular story of redemption. So much more than a treatise on a broken justice system. "The Master Plan" is an important book for every American to read. Will be recommending to my book club and every reader I know. Heck, I'll recommend it to strangers, too. This book should win the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.
Once I started this book, I was hooked. Mr. Wilson's story is yet another reminder of the trials and obstacles associated with growing up in poverty, as well as the unequal treatment that is so entrenched in systems that are allegedly meant for rehabilitation. But the best part of this book was the message that hope springs eternal.

The research was top notch and the discussion was meaningful, objective and valuable to all of us. Rape affects us all in many ways, sometime with us or those close to us and sometime in huge implications for our communities and culture. This book is a major building block to a better world, if we employ it.
Terrific story, terrific subject, dedicating reporting. Tragic story of a young girl in Seattle, whose rape report was disbelieved (and she was prosecuted for a false report!) only to be retrospectively validated (exonerated?) when the serial rapist did similar work on other women in Colorado, and was caught. The structure zig-zags back and forth between the Seattle rape and the Colorado rapes, but unfortunately it opens with the Seattle rape victim recanting, and the scene is told sketchily, almost enigmatically. I couldn't quite sink my teeth into the story before the scene changed. It's told from multiple points of view -- the Seattle victim, the cops investigating, and now the rapist himself. I am finding this confusing, and none of the perspectives -- are well fleshed out enough to allow me to settle into visualizing scenes.Makes it clear that there's been a historic sea change in police responses to rape, in large part, I think, because of the entry of women, and more feminist and empathic men, into policing. Unfortunately, as a work of nonfiction narrative, it's not well told. I was so primed to love this book, and have great respect for the two reporters who wrote it.
especially with the recent political mess that is our country, EVERY american should read this book and understand the risks and consequences women face for speaking their truth. i think after reading this many people would agree that its ridiculous to imply a woman would lie about something so traumatic and potentially life ruining.

You learn a lot about the systems in place for helping solve these crimes. In it you see the strengths and weaknesses in our system. This needs to be part of our conversation and a country and society.
Rape culture assumes a majority of women lie about rape. This book tackles that assumption head on and weaves together the stories of a woman charged with falsely reporting a rape, rapes that were documented but not solved, and the historical development of how women became to be known as liars when it came to rape. I feel like I learned so much as I read this book. The authors’ research is solid and the writing is accessible. Good job.

I give it two stars because the publisher doesn't have the kindle version edited to be in page number form like some other kindle books do. This is necessary for a book of this type in order to flip back and forth from index to disease. Please, this is an electronic copy, I should be able to click on the chapters, click on the disease and have it take me straight there. I shouldn't have to hunt it down. And don't bother searching for the terms. It will link you even to the reference pages and you will have to hunt down search by search to get what you want. Stick with the paper copy. And what is the purpose of zooming in on the photo if it just blurs it anyway? Lazy, lazy kindle transfer.

The collection of clinical pictures, recommended treatments, and the differential diagnoses in the appendix, combined with the detailed writings contained therein, make this an excellent textbook.
In dental school there are books you buy to pass the class, and books you plan on using after you graduate. I have a feeling this book will end up serving both purposes. I've spent a fair amount of time reading this text for the several path courses we've taken so far, and I am glad I will have this reference when I am practicing.This seems like a very comprehensive path book. It has excellent clinical photos, although it would always be nice to see a couple more pictures in path books to see other presentations of a lesion. The text is well written and informative.I have no experience with other pathology books, but this book is comprehensive enough that I don't anticipate a need to. I'd recommend this book to students and clinicians. Hope this review was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
I have the 1995 version of Neville, Damm, Allen & Bouquot - a great resource.After chatting with Carl Allen and having him as a CE presenter for a week several years ago, opened my eyes to a lot of oral path that was obscure or unknown to me.This digital version is handy and supremely up to date with great COLOR photos.I believe that there will be a new version out next year and frankly, I am looking forward to updating my current digital version when it is available.Thanks to the authors and their publishers for a clinical reference that helps me to help my patients.
This textbook is a thorough review of maxillofacial anomalies along with many photos and slides. I consider it as one of the most helpful item in my office. Well-written, organised and a nice quick differential diagnosis tables at the end of the book. I recommend it to every dentist.
My wife bought this for her NBDE exams. She says it is an excellent book and highly recommends it.
I had this kindle version and i really regret purchasing it. The way they design it is not helpful at all. It is very slow on searching, the pics get blurred when viewed and the text keeps changing and moving from page to page. I wish i could get mh money back and have the hard cover one. What makes it worse there is no way to return it even if you are not satisfy with the product.

Normally when the word extinct is used it is in reference to animals but after reading this book this term can legitimately be used to describe what happened to the original citizens of America the American Indians. Christopher Columbus and his minions (I refuse to call them soldiers) savagely murdered and killed countless numbers of these Indians, a vivid example of this is given on page 83 " One favorite sport of the conquistadors was "dogging." Traveling as they did with packs of armored wolfhounds and mastiffs that were on a diet of human flesh and were trained to disembowel Indians, the Spanish used the dogs to terrorize slaves and to entertain the troops. An entire book Dogs of the Conquest, has been published recently, detailing the exploits of these animals as they accompanied their masters throughout the course of the Spanish depredations. "A properly fleshed dog," these authors say, "could pursue a 'savage' as zealously and effectively as a deer or a boar.... To many of the conquerors, the Indian was merely another savage animal, and the dogs were trained to pursue and rip apart their human quarry with the same zest as they felt when hunting wild beasts." And also on pages 83-84 "Just as the Spanish soldiers seem to have particularly enjoyed testing the sharpness of their yard-long rapier blades on the bodies of Indian children, so their dogs seemed to find the soft bodies of infants especially tasty, and thus the accounts of the invading conquistadors and the padres who traveled with them are filled with detailed descriptions of young Indian children routinely taken from their parents and fed to the hungry animals. Men who could take pleasure in this sort of thing had little trouble with less sensitive matters, such as the sacking and burning of entire cities and towns, and the destruction of books and tablets containing millennia of accumulated knowledge, wisdom, and religious belief."After page 146 there's an illustrated unnumbered section titled Genocide the first nine pages of this section contain pictures of how the Spanish tortured and killed Indian women and children as stated on the second page of this section "[The Spaniards] took babies from their mothers' breasts, grabbing them by the feet and smashing their heads against rocks...They built a long gibbet, low enough for the toes to touch the ground and prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles. Then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive."Not to be outdone the good old American cavalry also engaged in its' fair share of savage murder and killing as can be seen from the bottom of page126 to the top of page 127 "They turned their guns, Hotchkiss guns, etc., upon the women who were in the lodges standing under a flag of truce, and of course as soon as they were fired upon they fled....There was a woman with an infant in her arms who was killed as she almost touched the flag of truce, and the women and children of course were strewn all along the circular village until they were dispatched. Right near the flag of truce a mother was shot down with her infant; the child not knowing that its mother was dead was still nursing, and that was especially a very sad sight. The women as they were fleeing with their babes were killed together, shot right through, and the women who were very heavy with child were also killed." I personally do not celebrate Columbus Day and Thanksgiving Day this book is ample proof and evidence as to why these two days should be set aside as a time for mourning not celebration, if you want your children to have a true understanding of American history then I strongly urge you to buy this book and have it as part of your home library.
This on deserves all the stars in the galaxy...American Holocaust is a painstakingly well researched account of the genocide perpetrated upon the Indigenous people of the Americas by European invaders. It is not an easy read - unless you have a heart of stone you will cry at some point. But it's all true, and really needs to be taught. Cannot recommend highly enough - just wish it were possible to give this more stars
Feels strange saying that I love a book that is as disturbing as this one is but I love that it's well-written and documented and it exposes some horrendous events in the history of the Americas as well as the world. Americans may well point fingers at the Nazis (and deservedly so) but it's a case of people in glass houses throwing stones. There is no question as to the repulsiveness and inhumanity of the genocide and mass murders perpetrated in Nazi Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao's China, the Khmer Rouge's Cambodia, and in a host of African nations, to name a few; but in our own not too distant past similar atrocities were perpetrated on the native populations of the Americas by the Spanish, Portuguese, British, and colonists/Americans. While the inhumanity elsewhere in the world is touched upon to show where the mindset of this barbarity likely originated, the focus is on the impact in the Americas -- North, South, and Central. The book contains graphic, disturbing descriptions of the cruelty done to the natives by men who have long been esteemed for their alleged contributions in history. Most notably Christopher Columbus. In my time in grade school, he and the many other conquistadors and explorers were portrayed and men of courage and integrity. This book paints a different picture of them as greedy, bloodthirsty, remorseless killers of peoples who they considered inhuman or subhuman. More troubling is Christianity's participation in these actions. Not to blame Christianity for initiating it but to indict it for condoning and even commending the events. Peaceful races of people minding their own business, living in communities well planned and constructed and advanced for their time, and who welcomed the interlopers were obliterated them. Much of the death and destruction was caused by the introduction of European diseases such as smallpox that killed tens of millions but a large part was also caused by actions of odious proportions. Entire civilizations such as the Aztec and the Inca and the Arawak whose artifacts have since been admired and sought after were wiped off the face of the earth. Tens of millions of people slaughtered. Men, women, children butchered. In numbers likely to exceed those of the aforementioned genocides combined. The purpose being to acquire their lands and their riches. Considered to be no more than animals needed to be exterminated. This is our history.This book should be required reading for everyone. The graphic descriptions of the savagery should cause outrage not only for the acts themselves but for a cultures that has covered up their crimes for centuries. And the holocaust has not ended yet.
The saddest thing I've ever read, but everyone should know about this! In the name of religion and fear over 100 million native Americans were slaughtered. Even today, they are suppressed and continuously battle the Federal government over their lands. It was nice to see Leonardo DiCaprio mentioning his support of native Americans' freedoms in his Golden Globe speech for his movie The Revenant.
This book contains knowledge that everyone should be aware of. I have read portions of this information in other locations but never assembled in such complete detail. I have several translations of Patanjali's yoga sutras - I like this better than some others because he actually includes the Sanskrit as well as his translation. None of the others I have do this. I just really like that I can see for myself what is being translated.
Great book to enhance your Mind and Body. I got interested in Meditation again after 15 years gap. I had a miraculous improvement in just 5 weeks where blood pressure and pulse rate all improved by 15 points. I have a marginal high blood pressure for few years. I am still taking medication. The blood pressure clock has been set back by 15 years in just 5 week. The best blood pressure reading I got today was in Cardiologist's office which was 100/70. Last time I saw that kind of blood pressure was 15 years ago. The acid test will be if I can have normal pressure in 6 months with out medication. My meditation / breathing exercises are based on knowledge gained from other sources.The breathing exercises are called Pranayama (Breathing) Exercises. One can find more about it from various sources. The true knowledge dates back to Patanjali - the original text dates back to approximately 2200 years ago. Interpretation of Patanjali Sutras has also been done by Harvard professor. His book contains 900 plus pages.This book should be read a few pages at a time and contemplate. There is high degree of correlation between mind, stress, body and its functions. It must start with your faith in a system like a mustered seed mentioned in Bible. If one wants to calm their mind - then it a step in the right direction. One need to understand attachment to things around us. Having all you can have may be OK - worrying about loosing them is a problem.
This came highly recommended by my yoga teachers as the most accessible entrance to understanding and learning the sutras. I agree - I love it, the energy of it is great, the descriptions and interpretations very meaningful.
This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to truly take the practice of yoga seriously. I find it to be fascinating and something that is giving me a foundational core for my practice.

Very cool.The Swami gave really good down to earth explanations of the sutras which I found to be the defining element that makes this book a winner.
There are many commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali written by various Swamiji and yoga practiceners. I found as many as 112 books in the market published as commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali. Most of them are mere translations. Some books are translations coupled with some asana postures. There are very few books stand out. Swami Satchidananda's book is one of them. Philosophy of Yoga can be dry for a cluttered mind. While his book is also more of a translation, he drives the theme of each verse/ sloka by telling a story, which makes the book interesting to read. While simplifying the explanation, he made sure that he drove the point to the reader.
Very earnest commentaries follow the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali at an honest cost, coherent with the spirit of the teachings. Whether or not some of what is explained is in your experience or whether you choose to believe some of the Creation hypotheses, the simple exercisesthat are explained in a simple and straightforward manner are there for you to try and see for yourself as to their efficacy.
Beautifully translated. Easy to understand. Great explanation of how to use the book...not just a read, but a meditation and thought provoking tool.
