Review

Praise for The Master Plan“Inspiring without being preachy, Wilson’s manifesto will greatly appeal to today’s youth.”—Publishers Weekly“Uplifting...Wilson candidly shares the eye-opening details of his time in prison with a prose style that moves with directness and refreshingly unfettered honesty...A smoothly written memoir steeped in positive reinforcement and hope for the future.”—Kirkus Reviews“Truly inspiring...Wilson engagingly tells his riveting story while also exposing corrupt justice practices...Highly recommended [for] anyone who loves an uplifting life story.”—Booklist"The Master Plan is less of a roadmap and more of a philosophy that we should all take to heart: we are all better than our worst decision, our sense of justice should honor the redemptive possibilities inherent in every person, and our destinies are truly intertwined.”—Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore“An incredibly moving book that will change the way you look at the criminal justice system.”—Senator Bernie Sanders“This is a brave book, full of thought-provoking insight on criminal justice, the modern prison system, and the possibility of redemption. And yet what sticks with me most is the beautiful, heartbreaking mother-son relationship....Thank you, Chris Wilson, for taking us into the cave, so that we can better understand the light.”—Beth Macy, bestselling author of Dopesick and Factory Man“I’ve admired Chris Wilson’s work with the underprivileged and returning citizens for the last three years, but as this book proves, you don’t really know a man until you understand his struggle. Do not miss this story of redemption, empowerment and giving back. It can change your life.”—Van Jones, TV show host and author of Beyond the Messy Truth“A brutally confessional indictment of mass incarceration in America.”—Taylor Branch, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Parting the Waters“The Master Plan adds a personal narrative to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, making it equally important. Chris Wilson is our generation’s go-to voice on mass incarnation and redemption. Not only does he brilliantly articulate his struggle, he offers a clear path to what needs to be done if we truly want reform. The difference between Wilson and other scholars is that he doesn’t only talk about the ills of the system––he’s survived that system and changed his life, and now spends his time helping other people do the same. This book will change the world.”—D Watkins, bestselling author of The Beast Side and The Cook Up“A bright light in a moment of moral darkness. Chris Wilson’s story is both a triumph and a call to arms on behalf of the incarcerated.”—Nathalie Molina Niño, CEO of BRAVA Investments and author of Leapfrog

When you haven't grown up in systemic poverty or been subject to institutional neglect at every turn, it's conveniently easy to ascribe values and render judgement on those who have not been as fortunate. What's harder is to understand how this can happen and admit that your worldview may not be as complete as you once thought. Even more difficult is recognizing how society chooses to label an entire segment of the population as broken and unredeemable. Chris's story challenges those notions at every turn and will force you to re-examine how you view our criminal justice system. In the few short years that Chris has been home, he has accomplished what many achieve in a lifetime, if at all. He's done it on his own merits and with a drive and sense of purpose that is truly inspiring. The best part is that he's only getting started. It would be easy to see Chris as an aberration, that one-in-a-million who actually made good. The reality is that there are hundreds of thousands more Chris's and Christines in our society, just waiting for the opportunity to prove that they have learned, grown, and are eager to make a positive contribution to their world. After reading Chris' book, you will never be able to dismiss "those people" again. They are us and we are them.

What an incredible first book by Chris Wilson. In the courageous act of sharing his story and himself he shows all of us the power and potential of change; he models for us all and inspires a rare type of personal growth and self investigation; he challenges us to see ourselves in new lights as we are taken on his journey, and to consider the chances we give others. And through all of this, he tells an amazing and honest story that’s hard to put down.

Through three parts, Chris Wilson weaves you through the trauma, adversity, and outright systemic failure that he has faced throughout his life. To that end, the level of inspiration and empathy it has the ability to create, especially for those who are not as aware of the depths of trauma operating in our society, is massive. Even bigger than the learnings in how faulty and filled with cracks our system is, are Chris Wilson's prescription which he calls the Master Plan, that I believe will be a scalable plan for those other Chris' out there who might be in his shoes but not have been given a pathway to a life they had been told they couldn't have. This book isn't just an inspiring story, it has the ability to entirely change the way humans who read it journey through life.

I am very impressed with the story and the journey. The book is very well written and keeps you engaged. This is the type of story that gives you hope and shows that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to and overcome obstacles. Excellent book!

This book is incredibly uplifting. It is an authentic account of a child sentenced to life in prison, and how that child grew into a man who found life’s purpose through education, and the help of others. The power of books and education have never been more true. This is a story of one mans journey, but really it’s the life experience of so many people in our nations prisons. This will make you think about prison reform, and specifically about reforming the way we overpunish “violent” youthful offenders.

So much more than a spectacular story of redemption. So much more than a treatise on a broken justice system. "The Master Plan" is an important book for every American to read. Will be recommending to my book club and every reader I know. Heck, I'll recommend it to strangers, too. This book should win the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.

Once I started this book, I was hooked. Mr. Wilson's story is yet another reminder of the trials and obstacles associated with growing up in poverty, as well as the unequal treatment that is so entrenched in systems that are allegedly meant for rehabilitation. But the best part of this book was the message that hope springs eternal.

So much insight into how broken our justice system is and how returning citizens are dehumanized and victimized while serving their time and even after they have served their time. America truly needs to invest in honest quality rehabilitative efforts and returning our citizens to communities of support with expectations of betterment for having spent time in prison focused on reform and self improvement.Mr. Wilson has shown us where and how to begin...
