I am running this setting now , and my Players love it , big reveals , plot twists , betrayals , with the reading of this book , you can immerse yourself and your group into a comic book where almost anything goes . My favorite story of this is , i had one player with immense strength run out of debris to throw , so he grabbed our nearly indestructible guy , and tossed him at a group of guys , eliminating several of them , and severely injuring a party member . Another big reveal was , we had a hero in hiding in the group and surrendered himself to save a mission to free hostage with tactical information the team needed , the player made an epic move in a game that floored the rest of the team and the players . With this setting epic game play is made more simple fast and furious But most of all FUN!!!

I looked at some Savage Worlds sourcebooks: Necessary Evil,Winterweir,Hellfrost,Fantasy Comp,Super Powers Comp,Bedlam City,Dawn of Legends,Necropolis 2350,Shaintar,Legends of Steel. I've ranked those in what my opinion are Best to Worst. A new Savage Worlds core book should come out in August 2011.Necessary Evil, Super Powers Comp, and Dawn of Legends have somewhat interchangable superpowers lists.Necessary Evil has the most interesting champaign, with plenty of plot twists and vile villains. Oddly, the PCs will also be villains, since most of the superheros got killed. Glossy, solid, full-color, digest sized. And now out of print ($$$) - but it might be reprinted. It is one of the best RPG books I've seen.Super Powers Companion has the most villains. Powers in the front, Villains in the back. Glossy, solid, full-color, digest sized. That's the book on sale on this page, and I'll definitely recommend it for a supers Savage World campaign. In my opinion, Savage Worlds has the best production quality in the RPG market (Pathfinder is #2).Dawn of Legends has a somewhat rambling worldbook. Nothing really grabbed me after an hour, but there are a number of villains detailed. However, it does have the most material of the three books. Not glossy, 8.5x11 sized, grayscale, more fluff than I care for.

I purchased the orignal hardback edition some time ago. The biggest change was updating to match the explorer's edition of Savage Worlds. This edition also expands the setting's finale.Ive looked at other superhero games (including Siver Sentinals and GURPS: Supers), and this has to be one of the simplest, and straight forward rules mechs for a superheroes game, but that is to expected frm Savage Worlds. To play this setting you do need a copy of Savage Worlds Expploer Edition ($9.95). This is the generic source material and it contains all the basic rules you'll need to run the game. Neccessary Evil does not reprint the basic rules. Instead it points out diffrences, additions, and focuses on superpowers and the campaign.Plot: without spoiling the plot, Necessary Evil casts the players as supervillians who are forcefully recruited to fight against an alien occupation. The world's heroes were tricked into letting their guards down and the aliens destroyed them. Now the players, as supervillians, represent the lesser of two evils and must drive off the aliens.

... but the book quality and lay out are nice. Soft cover, all color great art, 9x6.5 dimensions, has all the info one will need to run the campaign (other than a Savage Worlds core book). I will be running this in a few months for a group of 6 players.

If you are familiar with Savage Worlds, this game takes no time at all to get right into. If you're not familiar with Savage Worlds, I recommend becoming so, it's a fantastic game, and needed to run this, as well as Deadlands Reloaded (another amazing game). In Necessary Evil, you play supervillains fighting off a greater menace to humanity. Creating characters could not be simpler. You have points you spend on buying powers. Powers are very basic, with the flavor being added by your imagination. You could take the invisibility power, and then say whether your casting a magic spell, wearing a high tech cloaking device, or have "mutant powers". Then there are additional effects for each power. Perhaps the power isn't always "active", and must say when your turn it on, the power might be cheaper to purchase. Or being able to "Fly" faster might cost more than being able to hover and running speed. The book has a full story campaign in it, that is pretty fun to play, but with any supers it wouldn't take much to write your own adventures, even on the fly.I highly recommend this game. It's a great game to run when introducing new people into the world of role-playing.For an in depth review, watch the Game Geeks review on Youtube.

great story and a good system to play in

well done, fun stuff

So supers games are all about being the big awesome hero. But what if all the big awesome heroes got wasted because evil will always win because good is dumb? Yeah, it's a bit like that. Be a bad guy. Smash thing. Save the world...? The obviously not Dr. Doom will help you along.Great game, great system. My group bought it right away and played it. We loved it. We're hooked on Savage Worlds. There are a few quirks in the system, but nothing worse than anyone else. This was our first supers game, we played the Plot Point and a few extra things. Definitely worth checking out if you like supers or savage worlds.

Review

Profoundly moving, expertly crafted tale… a singular masterpiece, exceptionally well-served by Kay's atmospheric and ominous illustrations… tackles the toughest of subjects by refusing to flinch, meeting the ugly truth about life head-on with compassion, bravery, and insight.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)There’s no denying it: this is one profoundly sad story. But it’s also wise, darkly funny and brave, told in spare sentences, punctuated with fantastic images and stirring silences. Past his sorrow, fright and rage, Conor ultimately lands in a place — an imperfect one, of course — where healing can begin. A MONSTER CALLS is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.—The New York TimesA nuanced tale that draws on elements of classic horror stories to delve into the terrifying terrain of loss. . . . Ness brilliantly captures Conor’s horrifying emotional ride as his mother’s inevitable death approaches. In an ideal pairing of text and illustration, the novel is liberally laced with Kay’s evocatively textured pen-and-ink artwork, which surrounds the text, softly caressing it in quiet moments and in others rushing toward the viewer with a nightmarish intensity.A poignant tribute to the life and talent of Siobhan Dowd and an astonishing exploration of fear.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)A brilliantly executed, powerful tale.—School Library Journal (starred review)Ness twists out a resolution that is revelatory in its obviousness, beautiful in its execution, and fearless in its honesty. Kays artwork keeps the pace, gnawing at the edges of the pages with thundercloud shadows and keeping the monster just barely, terribly seeable.—Booklist (starred review)A masterpiece about life and loss that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.—Library Media Connection (starred review)The heavily textured monochromatic illustrations are silent screams, rendering Conor's inner chaos palpable with dense shading and jagged edges symbolizing the wildness within while shifting perspectives alternately create intimacy and distance, like the push and pull he feels as he tries to stay engaged in an impossibly painful situation… Emotionally wrenching, this draws truth across pain in a way that is accessible to middle-school readers.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksHeart-wrenching and thought-provoking.—The Horn BookPatrick Ness is an insanely beautiful writer.—TIME MagazineThe power of this beautiful and achingly sad story for readers over the age of 12 derives not only from Mr. Ness's capacity to write heart-stopping prose but also from Jim Kay's stunning black-ink illustrations. There are images in these pages so wild and ragged that they feel dragged by their roots from the deepest realms of myth.—Wall Street JournalThe monster is a brilliant creation — part giant, part yew tree, destructive, didactic, elemental...The book has the thrills and ambition you would expect from the author of the Chaos Walking trilogy...Ness, Dowd, Kay and Walker have rifled death's pockets and pulled out a treasure.—The GuardianFeatured/recommended on Oprah's 2012 Kids Reading List—Oprah.comAn honest, heart-wrenching story that moved me to tears.—John Boyne (author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)

I have been reading aloud to my twins every night, and I thought this might be a book they would enjoy, because of the illustrations. I ended up finishing it with them within 24 hours. You know how you come across a book, and after reading it, you feel like EVERYONE needs to read it as well? That is how I felt with this book. As a mother, this book ripped my heart to shreds, and put me in an emotional state as I was reading it to my sons. But it was worth every tear I shed. Guys, if you haven't read this book, Do it! The story, the writing, the illustrations, this book was pure perfection and a total 5 out of 5 stars for me.If you have read this, what were your thoughts?

Majority of the previous reviewer's are correct. A Monster Calls: Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd, is a book everyone in your family can benefit from. The story revolves around Conor and he is in the mist of battling strange nightmares, bullies at school, and a close family member heart breaking disease. Conor ends up learning life lessons from an unlikely entity and uncover feelings within himself he never knew exist. The imagery in the novel is amazing. A reader can feel, imagine, and visualize some of the key moments Conor experience (the bullying, anger at his grandmother). The novel is perfect for a child/teenager who is going through personal issues whether it is dealing with death, acceptance, or carrying around unnecessary guilt. In addition, a movie is available to rent on Amazon.com. However, I highly recommend you read the novel first before the movie (it will help you to understand significant moments). Overall, a moving novel that depicts real life events, relationships, and feelings. I appreciate you for taking time out to read my review. I hope it is informative.

Beautifully written and hauntingly illustrated, Ness’ novel tells the story of Conor, a young boy who suffers from a recurring nightmare about his mother, who is ill with cancer. Practically friendless—save for a girl named Lily, whom Conor seems to shun—and bullied in school, Conor copes with his loneliness and fear by calling on a monster who appears to him in the form of a yew tree. The monster—whose real purpose grows apparent as the novel progresses—tells Conor three stories in preparation for hearing Conor tells his own story.A narrative about the truth and knowledge contained within stories and their inherent ability to empower us, Ness’ novel tackles the experience of youthful trauma with sensitivity, poignancy, and grace. It’s the first of his novels that I’ve read, but it certainly will not be the last.

Never have I read such a poignant and accessible book on accepting monsters invading our lives. This book is a mere 205 pages, easily readable in a day due to the layout, but has stuck with me continuously over the past two years.Conor is a young boy filled with fear because of his mothers illness, and harbors the bravery of a thousand men. As we all do at every point in our life, he needs guidance, given to him in the form of the monster- a yew tree. He is as old as the land, and has many stories to tell- four of which he tells Conor.Patrick Ness has done an excellent job capturing and humanizing the reality none of us want or know how to face, and forces us to confront the same fears Conor is experiencing. There were many moments where my face was soaked in tears. Death and the way we experience it, our truth, is a topic Ness gracefully introduces and allows us to feel the pain along with his main character. Conor is more human and more real than any other character I have encountered. The illustrations by Jim Kay are beautifully done, creating a slightly uncomfortable but very enthralling atmosphere between the pages. When someone asks for a young-adult recommendation, I immediately suggest A Monster Calls, with the warning that there will be emotions not usually confronted by young adults. Be prepared for difficult, but important, discussions with your students, friends, or children .

With beautiful illustrations by Jim Kay, Patrick Ness tells an intensely emotional story about a child and a monster. This book had a massive impact on me. It was an easy read - from this perspective, it's probably very accessible from middle school on up. But the subject matter is intense. My eyes weren't dry as I finished it. It's very well-done.Conor's mother is dying of cancer. All this while, a monster, in the form of the yew tree in his backyard is visiting him at night. It's a fascinating story.I picked up this book with my other October reads, and with a name of A Monster Calls, I assumed it was about monsters. But it's so much more. It's about stories, about love, about loss. About dealing with the hard things in life.I recommend it, even thought it twisted my guts inside out upon reading it. It's extremely emotional. I won't say anything else, to not spoil it from anyone, but it's a worthy read.

My wife cried throughout most of the second half of the novel and loved the writing. I, too, was impressed with the writing, and the story kept me engaged, although I thought a couple of the lessons from the monster were created to give a shock or twist ending just for the sake of it. There were definitely some holes in logic for me, but I still enjoyed the ride. And the artwork was stunning. It's also a quick read, maybe a couple hours. And there is a great lesson about having to face your fears and another concerning how actions are more important than thoughts. Finally, it proves that one can write a compelling work without having to resort to sex, cuss words, unnecessary violence, and inappropriate scenes.
