Overall, the book was very insightful. I thought MacIntosh did a great job painting the picture of the dysfunction, politics, and general nervous spiral that overtook AB. However, I would have liked to hear a lot more about the AB/Miller beer wars during the reign of The Third. That would have made for very interesting reading, rather than just saying they hit 50% market share. As for the Inbev part of the book, the acquisition happend very fast, but the writing slowed down considerably and jumped around without much intention. We got deep dives into the thoughts and feelings of a host of characters who had been all but absent before the end, so I found myself not caring about the perspectives of some of the random execs that were included (especially in light of how much of the book focused on the relationship between the Third and the Fourth). Could have used more "character development" if she wanted us to care more about their opinions later.

Very important book on the evolution of American industry, in this case how the world's most valuable brand with 50% domestic market share became vulnerable to take-over and was eventually swallowed up by a more nimble, focused, and global competitor. We learn how the Busch family made the take-over financially possible by reducing their holdings to single digits over the years. Maybe more importantly the family also lost their way, focusing more on inter-family squabbles, new wives ands girlfriends, travel, avoiding each other, baseball and zoos. Setting up a small JV with Inbev led to the elephant getting his nose under the tent and eating all the peanuts. The AB take-over story got almost no press as it unfolded in 2009 due to intense business network talking head fixation on the meltdown and recession. Julie Macintosh has gotten some great insider accounts and also did her homework with comprehensive reporting. I understand she has a financial background but has focused here more on the personalities, interactions, and agendas of the family, board, and long time employees. Perhaps her editors told her that every balance sheet in the book would cut sales in half.We get a great story of how families operate, especially wealthy ones that have legacy and fiduciary objectives. The Busch family and the controlling families of Modelo (who were briefly a partner and potential white knight) showed that they will always default to a course of inaction, as the stars need perfect alignment for agreement across the generations. The Brazilian financiers had no such constraints. They moved decisively and understood perfectly not only the financials but how a decision would be made in this circumstance. Remarkably they have been allowed and even encouraged by governments to consolidate the brewing industry to an unprecedented level. The corollary to Inbev buying AB would be Toyota buying Ford or Lenovo buying Dell.

The hallmark of this excellent book is equal parts the intricate, detail-laden reporting that author Julie MacIntosh has painstakingly compiled and the masterful profiles she's written of this takeover tale's main protagonists. And, to do any book on this subject justice, the profiles you need to nail are those of A-B's father and son CEOs, August Busch III and August Busch IV, known indelibly as the 'The Third' and 'The Fourth.'What's she's put down on paper here is a fascinating take on those two. As one close source says to MacIntosh, what transpired between those two is 'Shakespearean...I just haven't decided which play.' Conventional wisdom would write a 'Crazy and Lazy' saga (as the two were known on Wall Street): that a mercurial, hyper-focused Third drove A-B to greatness and a detached, debauched Fourth let it fall quickly into InBev's hands. The truth is far more complicated. MacIntosh makes a compelling case that is was the Third's insular nature and megalomaniacal tendencies that led him to shun deals, go it alone and focus almost entirely on domestic dominance. Meanwhile, the beer world shifted under his feet: two forward-thinking international giants - SAB/Miller and InBev - emerged right in front of his dismissive eyes. By the time The Fourth took the reins, A-B's goose was cooked. They were just the last ones to know it.I listened to the unabridged audio version of this book. It was fantastic! I highly recommend Joyce Bean's excellent narration. It is 13.5 hours of pure enjoyment. It's quite a feat to have a female narrator do justice to what is effectively an all-male tale - it's a book filled with quote after quote (both attributed and juicy off-the-record stuff) in alpha male voices. Bean drops her voice an octave to deliver those words, punctuating them with a supercilious air while embodying the words of The Third. Well done.

Surprisingly bad book. I purchased after briefly reading the reviews. After reading parts of the book I could not believe it has this many great reviews. Going back and looking in detail I see almost all the reviews are plant. Either the person has only done one review in their life or they are a hired reviewer that only gives 5 star reviews. Next time I will be more careful. The book starts well. In standard "for dummies" fashion the first chapter is introduction, terminology, and the like. Good and useful. The second chapter is setting up the development environment. It is up to date and focuses on Android Studio rather than Eclipse like most of the other Android books. I was able to successfully the development environment. Chapter three is a Hello World application and an explanation of all the build files. Again, useful. I was able to build the app and launch in an emulator. The book starts going downhill with Chapter 4 about the User Interface. It does not take the time to give the big picture and instead dives in with do this and change this without telling why. Typos and incomplete explanations abound. I looked on the book website for an errata sheet but found none. I spend a couple of hours trying to work my way through and gave up. The information as presented does not work.Frustrated I gave up on the book and wrote this review. Too bad. The book had a good start.

Generally I am pretty fond of the dummies books but I was not as impressed with the one for Android app development. Writing programs for Android has a lot of variables and this book did not in my opinion do a very good job at making it easy to learn anything other than your most basic of programs. That said I have yet to find a textbook I like that would be easy for beginning students to learn from. Most books take the easy way out and put out a disclaimer that they expect you already know another programming language and then assume students should be able to fill in gaps that they don't explain very well. Very limited the knowledge you pick up from this book. I think it would have been better to go more in depth with either a larger book with more details or break it in a series of books. But more explanations, examples, and exercises are needed to make programming books a useful teaching tool.

This book starts strong until chapter 6 and then quickly weakens. Forget about getting the code samples, featured in the book, to compile. You will find the guidance and instructions woefully inadequate. Following the author's directions will not produce the same results for you as the results appear in the book. The author omits relevant pointers and thorough step-by-step instructions for typing the code into Android Studio editors. On one occasion I simply tried to make simple changes specified by the author and got errors like "Error: Default Activity Not Found" after the application failed to launch. I would expect sometime *VERY* soon Android App Development for Dummies 4th Edition available free of charge to anyone that purchased this 3rd edition.

I've only read the Table of Contents and the First Chapter, but I have quite a bit of confidence that this book will put me on a solid path to App. Development. Chapter 2 promises to provide me with the information to download all the software I will need from Google for free. Dummies books always provide dependable, and expert information. I'm sure that this one will be no different.

I have been trying to learn Android programming and purchased this book to help guide me and my feelings are mixed. Just to be clear, I have a background in programming with knowledge of Python, basic C and very basic Java. When I read a programming book, I want to see examples of what we are doing and clear explanations of why we are doing it. For example, if it says "write this code", I like to understand exactly why I am writing it and what it means. I guess I am anal, but I really want to understand because I believe that this is how you learn best.In the case of this book, I feel like it is too focused on building specific apps and the steps required. It is does not provide much insight into exactly "why" you perform certain steps, and for me this is the frustration. I really want the why and this book feels light in this area. As a result, I feel like the book clearly explains how to build certain apps, but misses the target on helping people understand Android development.I think that the question comes down to what you want to accomplish. If you are looking for a book that walks through the development of certain apps then this book is for you. If your interest is really about learning Android programming then I would advise that you look elsewhere.

Incredibly disappointing book. As several reviewers have now noted, it starts off strong with various explanations about how Android works. However, as you move forward in the book, the example code becomes buggy and very little explanation is provided. Basically the book just says "type what's in this box", gives a few lines of cursory information about what you've just typed, and that's it. I don't see how anyone could learn to develop Android apps using this book, even very simple apps. Don't waste your money.

A reprint of a ground-breaking and prescient book about the perils of fighting in Vietnam. Using the French experience, Bernard B. Fall correctly analyzed and predicted the trouble Americans would face by taking on a battle-hardened and experienced Vietnamese foe. Specifically, he pointed out that America would be facing the exact same enemies on the same terrain and using the same tactics they used to defeat the French. He warned of the pitfalls of "search and destroy" tactics in "revolutionary war." Ironically, Fall was killed while observing an American amphibious search-and-destroy operation along the "street without joy" two decades after he began writing about the futility of such operations. Had General William C. Westmoreland heeded, instead of ignoring, Fall's suggestion, the Vietnam War might have ended quite differently; it certainly would have been less costly and less divisive. This was a classic case of "Lessons Un-learned" by the U.S. military.

I found "Street Without Joy" fascinating - a cross between the summation of after-action battle reports and a history book outlining the French debacle in Indochina. Readers clearly see that Laos and Vietnam were trying to free themselves from French colonial rule after World War II...the French, Chinese and Japanese were all defeated and kicked out during the war; the author maintains that if France would have granted both Laos and Vietnam their independence in 1945 - so many lives could have been saved. It was obvious that the French did not have enough troops, equipment and supplies to support their mission within Indochina, and were not trained or ready to fight a guerrilla style jungle war. Conventional thinking and fighting were no match against an elusive enemy in the thick jungles, who chose the time and place for battle. As time went on, there were so many lessons to be learned and opportunities for change, yet the French insisted on the status quo - going so far as to train their Vietnamese allies in those same methods and tactics. As a result, almost 100,000 French soldiers lost their lives during their 8 year battle against those forces loyal to Ho Chi Minh. When the French were defeated in 1954, Laos received sovernty and Vietnam was split at the 17th parallel; the southern half of the country still opposing those communist of the North. The United States came into the picture soon afterwards, providing advisors, equipment and funds to support the South's battle against the North Communists. However, there was no interest in studying the French battles and learning from their mistakes, so, history was to repeat itself...and so it did! When Bernard Fall published this book in 1961, he states in it that the South had already lost the war with the North and cites examples of why it will happen - including outright lies by both the press and government to name a few.I learned so much from reading "Street Without Joy" and feel that if the U.S. Government would have listened to this author or read his work, then acting upon the many lessons learned, I might not have had to serve in that war as an infantry soldier during 1970 and many of those 58,000+ soldiers might still be living.I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about Indochina and the French occupation.John Podlaski, authorCherries - A Vietnam War Novel

Being a military historian l cannot more highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a complete understanding of this war. Had those in the administration of Pres. Johnson read and followed the analysis and recommendations in this book, the outcome would have been much different. I interviewed Gen. Westmoreland for two hours in 1981. He had read the book and directed all in his command to read it. Unfortunately the advisors at Defence and State were ignorant of Mr. Falls book.Mr. Fall spent considerable time gathering facts from all involved in this conflict. He presents the military actions in a highly readable manner, with indepth explanations of the tactics used by all sides and the consequences of the battles tactically and politically. He gives an excellent view of the strategic issues and the political motives of the French and North Vietnamese. His recommendations and observations to those who fight in Revolutionary Wars as he calls them, are applicable to the several wars currently being fought by the United States, wars which he predicted the U.S. would be almost constantly involved in after our defeat in Viet Nam. Will we ever learn from history?

All the histories of American involvement in Vietnam mention this book, usually reverently, for its coverage of the French war in Vietnam. It's really good, with both the feel of an insider who knows the people and situation, and the big picture view. Fall sees it as a political war that the military can't win/couldn't win without immense changes elsewhere. But he's totally anti-Communist, while respecting the dedication and ability the Viet Minh showed. One bad point: this isn't a report on the whole 8 years the French fought there, just in depth reporting on a few campaigns in 1950 and later. One fascinating point: the potted bio on the back shows he was based in the US through most of the 50's and 60's, until he died walking with an American unit, killed by a land mine, so his view isn't totally French and foreign.
