Review

"More than thirty years ago, when I was a general surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, curiosity led me to pursue the value of plant-based nutrition for halting and reversing disease. In time our entire family became plant-based, including our twenty-two year old son Rip. Little did I know then that not only would Rip embrace my studies with his usual unrelenting enthusiasm and spirit, he would become a leading proponent of my research and clinical strategies. I've been vegan for almost four years and have a small collection of plant-based nutrition books and cookbooks, but had never bought an Engine 2 book before. I picked this up at a friend's suggestion (she had told me about the free Facebook support group) and because I had seen some of the recipes in the daily emails the Engine 2 group sent, and am so glad I did. If you're new to plant-based eating, there is a lot to learn here, but even if you're been vegan for awhile, this has really good advice for moving to a whole-foods diet, and the recipes are tasty and easy!If you decide to follow the seven-day plan, you won't be eating dairy, eggs, meat, or any oils (including oil and coconut oils) or drinking any alcohol, and you'll be limiting your fats to just walnuts, small amounts of avocados, and the fats that exist naturally in plant foods. You're also meant to minimize your salt and sugar intakes. The recipes are based on the foundation of building oatmeal-based bowls or waffles for breakfast, and then bowls, soups, or open-faced sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Since one of the rules is to not drink your calories, there are no smoothie or juice recipes.Part I of the book (which comprises the first 176 pages) is where the author outlines the programs, and he draws upon the latest studies to explain why a plant-based diet is so healthy. He takes the time to de-bunk the myths that you can't get enough calcium or protein from plants. Although I knew most of this information, it was a helpful review, and if you're new to plant-based eating, I think that the information can help alleviate any worries you might have about meeting your nutritional needs from plants.Part II (pages 177-279) contains a more detailed overview of what you can eat during the seven days, as well as quite a few recipes to get you started. So far, all of the recipes I've tried have been great -- and they are so easy to put together. If you're worried about having to cook a lot, in Part II, they explain the idea behind batch cooking, where you can spend a few hours on the weekend roasting veggies, cooking quinoa, making oatmeal, etc. I've found that this method really helps keep me on track for the week, and the book makes it very simple and easy to do.They also give you a sample template of their recipes for seven days, so you have three meals a day that you can eat from the book, without having to put too much time into outlining what you'll be eating this week.If you're on Facebook, definitely check out the support group. Several nutritionists check in there, and everyone who posts offers great tips, especially if you're new to this way of eating.Although, as I mentioned at the start of my review, I've been vegan for almost four years and am a health and fitness nut for the most part, I have a bad sweet tooth, and so this book has given me a much-needed way to re-boot my eating and cut out excess sugar and processed food. I've only dipped my toe into the eating plan, so to speak, and have just been trying a few recipes, but my hope is to be diligent about following the plan for seven days, and, when I do, I will be sure to update my review with my results.

This is one of about 6 books we bought that were authored by Rip E. and John McDougall, MD. What they say has proved to be true for us. We have been doing this for 5 months and it has become our new eating lifestyle. If you read many of their books, get the most recent ones. A lot of the medical information is similar, but updated, BUT all the books have recipes and the more recent books have simpler and tastier recipes than earlier books. Having all those recipes from which to choose has made this diet easy to follow. Once we got the hang of it, we began to experiment making our own healthful and tasty recipes. It is like an adventure for us -- something we never got into as a couple in our 40+ years of marriage. Our old way was mostly woman in the kitchen and man pouring cereal or out at the BarBQ grill.I think it was easiest to do because we both did this diet together. We eased into it by studying and experimenting a little at a time over a period of one or two months before we were confident that we could live with this as our family diet going 'full time'.Side note: I guarantee that if you drop meat, dairy, oils and eliminate sugary and fried salty foods as much as possible, you can eat mostly organic healthy food from good quality grocery stores and you will notice that your food bills are LOWER.Bon appetite, and enjoy your life more!!

This is a great beginner book for the new plant based eater. Experienced vegans will find the recipes on the simple basic side. I love the Bowls because I am NOT a fan of sandwiches. He has many good bowl ideas! He has open faced sandwich recipes for those who love sandwiches. I would have liked to see more gluten free options and gluten free info, and subs for allergies like citrus. I'm allergic to citrus, and bananas. If you're highly motivated his plan is great. If you don't think you can go so strict so fast, you may need to step down slowly and I didn't see any info there about that. I took away a star for NO INDEX as I bought the kindle version. If you're publishing a book please include an index. There is also no Table of Contents. If you don't like cheaply published books, you won't like this one. All in all it was pretty good. Beginners will enjoy the ease and simplicity of becoming plant based.

Think you've heard it all because you've read so much about Whole Food Plant Based Eating? I thought so too, but I was wrong! Learned several things but the most shocking to me is what happens to our bodies when we sit for prolonged periods of time. Check out pages 156-158. I did the fix and immediately noticed a huge difference! I really didn't think I would. The Author has a great way of putting scientific information in easy to understand terms and he helps the reader figure out how this relates to their life. This is an excellent book and a great program. Even though it's called a "diet" you could do it long term just fine. This is a life changer, folks!

The information is presented in a way that anyone can "get it". Easy is my biggest desire for all my food and this is it! From quick breakfasts, to on the go dinners, it has it all! 100% plant strong and 100% doable for even the worst cooks like me who want to me healthy!!!

If your new to this way of eating, this is a very good book. If you're a seasoned plant based eater you may not be impressed. This book needs more recipes in it to be worth the price. It does have some good ideas about how to build a meal with different kinds of ingredients for people new to this lifestyle. Beginners tip- if you find some of the recipes bland, kick up the spices a notch until your taste buds have time to adjust. The book came in perfect condition and is printed in the USA.

Great program. Helps stop the craving for daily meat. Keeps you on the path of health. If you haven't broken the sugar habit or salt habit this plan will help.

Nice concise way to get started in the whole food plant based diet. No oil, no sugar, no salt, and eliminate the processed foods. It is a great book and a good read about a great way to live.

Mr. Peterson is in the top rank of thriller writers, and his Nathan McBride series is way up on my "must read" list. "Hired to Kill" does not break new ground, but takes some familiar themes and weaves them together masterfully: North Korean WMD, jihadists, Mexican cartels, border security. Add Nathan's new relatives -- half-sister and niece -- and his emotional reliance on Harvey Fontana and Holly, and all the elements are there for another exciting chapter in the series. The one quibble I have had with the series in general is that the past torture of Nathan has quite understandably left him prone to get into his own head a bit much. The book starts with some terrible North Korean bioweapon tests, moves on to some horrible multiple shootings that must be connected, and concludes with one of the most exciting take downs I have read in recent years. Mr. Peterson has great respect for his heroes, and also for their superiors all the way up to and including the White House.

Andrew Peterson has done it again. We know, tragedy touches most everyone in this world, but how you handle it displays who you are and what you are made of in this life. As to how far any individual will go to protect the ones they love has been recognized by so many, especially in times of war. However, we will see in this story Nathan, Stone, Denise, Charlene, Vince and Harvey will go to the extreme to protect those they love and in this case thousands they don’t know. Still more how much Nathan and Harvey are willing to go to protect each other.Andrew’s tale of Nathan’s adventure is full of heart and soul as well as bravery that many will never be called upon to face.Thank you Andrew! You have done it again, provided me with hours of excitement and thrills.

While this a one of the better books in the series, it is seriously tainted by Peterson's need to inject current politics and real figures into the story. It just taints it. It also means this is the last book of his I will ever buy.The best part of the story is the psychological odyssey that Nathan must make to deal with his complex feelings toward his family, his best friend, and his significant other. Leaving out the political stuff, the worst part is that the villains are rather flat, two-dimensional and mostly just targets, and, like the previous book, are nothing more than vehicles. We want to know more about Jin, but...that's left out.The final jarring note (spoiler alert) was sending the bad guys to prison in Mexico, saying it will be far worse for them, but forgetting that a REAL Mexican drug lord paid for an engineered a complicated and sophisticated escape plan that allowed him to go free and would be far more difficult in the US, and impossible at Gitmo.

Andrew Peterson is by far one of the most under appreciated authors in modern times. His seven novels about Nathan McBride and Harvey Fontana are some of the finest books I have read. I appreciate Adrew’s use of imagery and his ability to build suspense and keep the readers attention and interest. The characters are a little larger than life but it is what makes them interesting and it has kept me coming back for more. I am sorry to see negative posts on this site due to the mention of real life characters - it is unfortunate people cannot separate themselves from real life but that should not impact or stifle the author’s creativity. There are plenty of other outlets for people to become polarized if that is what they wish; in my opinion, that attitude should not extend to this exceptional work of fiction from this very gifted and talented author. The series has a very positive and upbeat message, one of over coming adversity through strength, faith, love and friendship. I look forward to any and all future works penned by Andrew Peterson.

In Chapter 1, which I assume is the current date, Nathan does his thing in a grocery aisle in California. It’s mentioned only once again, in the Six Days Ago group of chapters, Chapter 17, when says that it happened twenty-four hours ago.The story is told in retrospect, beginning with Ten Days Ago (Chapters 2-6). The last chapter is still under the Two Days Ago heading. Why didn't he start with Eight Days Ago instead of Ten Days Ago so that the final battle would be present day. Don't know. Maybe the Epilogue was supposed to be in present day, except it took place on the east coast and Nathan was on the west coast doing his thing with Fred Flintstone, so that doesn't work.Sandwiched between two chapters (7, 8) that happened Eight Days Ago and two chapters that happened Seven Days Ago (14, 15) is five chapters (9, 10, 11, 12, 13) that happened Five Days Ago. If the Eight Days, Five Days, Seven Days sequence is correct, the continuity of the action in the first half of the book doesn’t make sense. For example, a man’s wife is injured on day eight. Three days later, her husband is driving like a madman to get to the hospital while she’s still in ER. Later, there are discussions of the repercussions of events that haven’t happened yet.The author did a very credible job of describing a very complex battle scene in Mexico…until he decided that the butler did it.Why would a fiction author go out of his way to garner one and two star reviews from upset readers by inserting his political views into a work of fiction? Don’t know. I enjoy reading this author's works and will read more, but this one was awfully messy.

I always read Nathan McBride series books within three day of purchasing them. The books are extremely difficult to put aside because they're so interesting. I look forward to the next installment.

This product is marketed as a book, which is misleading. I bought the kindle edition and discovered that it's really more like a pamphlet than a book. It consists of about 70 pages of large-font type, with about 100 words per page. For reference an average paperback has about 250 to 300 words per page. So this publication is really like a 25-page book of facts about ADHD. And there's nothing included within to help parents dealing with ADHD, beyond the collection of factoids. If you are a parent looking for principles, methods and resource to help you deal with your ADHD child, look elswhere.

I didn't know what ADHD was, and this book is a gat introduction to ADHD, especially to the people who are studying psychology, or medicine, and would like to know more about the topic. It also offers solutions to the condition, which, I find to be really practical and helpful!

I chose five stars because it broke down the definition of ADHD in a simplistic manner, the myth associated with this and how to help you and your child to cope.

This book is an excellent overview of ADHD and how to manage it in your child. Author Grace Child does an excellent job of explaining the various types of ADHD, dispelling myths associated with the disorder, and discussing various treatments. The book is concise and easy-to-read; after I'd finished it, I felt much more well-informed about the ins and outs of ADHD.I would recommend this book to anyone who has a child with ADHD or knows someone who does. There's a lot of great info inside.

I thought there would be more information.

Could not get it to download

I loved it! It was clear and to the point. It was well written. It actually offered solutions that are helpful.

Short but informative! To the point. Gives insight and interesting facts about ADHD and understanding it much better. Would recommend for a light read.

Take one part science, two parts mystery, and a half portion of teenage angst. Mix in water travel, adventure, and an uninhabited island wildlife preserve, and what do you get? Non-stop action!Virals was lively action in a captivating setting with mystery, science, and a sprinkling of danger to make life interesting. In other words, plot-driven excitement that put me in mind of the best that a Nancy Drew/CSI/Lost sort of adventure could conjure. For what it was, it was entertaining. So – down to the meat – what wasn’t it? Number one: a love story. Not that it couldn’t develop in the future, mind you, but this one isn’t it. Number two: big on character development. You may have seen the words ‘plot-driven’ above. I meant them. The book isn’t shallow, but it’s not a platform for deep thoughts or character change, either. It’s an adventure story. Number three: girls-only reading. I think that Virals will appeal mainly to guys. I KNOW it’s got that tomboy and science geek thing down pat, but the next most likely audience (in my opinion) is the male half of the teenage equation. Great adventure reading, mysteries, and unexplained diseases? Should appeal to both sexes.Final verdict: worth the read. While this wasn’t one of my typical choices, it entertained me for a couple of hours on a rainy day, and the non-stop action was a great diversion. I’ll be looking out for the next installment.Recommended for: mystery and action lovers, those Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys readers all grown up, fans of Bones, CSI and other mystery/forensics shows, and perhaps that reluctant teen reader you know – guy or girl – who might be thrilled by a little bit of action adventure.

This is another book mistakenly listed as for Youthful readers. If one is into the Paranormal, adults will truly enjoy "Virals" the first in a new seres. The heroine, Tory Brennan, the grandniece of the Bones Serie star, Temperance Brennan, is 14 year old, has just lost her mother in an aut accident and has moved in with her father, a scientist living on one of the islands of the coast of South Carolina, and working in an animal reserve and research laboratory on another. She has three friends, boys from the age of 14 to 16 who are children of other employees on the same research laboratry island. The four of them are enrolled in a posh school on the mainland and are outcasts there.Curios kids, they investigate one of the labs and find a puppy, a half wolf / half German Shepherd offspring of the wild wolf inhabitants of the island, hooked up to all sorts of wires an tubes--with his cage marked for his extermination. They grab the pup and run back to their own island home. And each comes down with whatever has infected the pup, with varying degrees of illness. Tory's dad refuses to let her have a pet, so the four kids keep the pup in an old abandoned WWII defense bunker they've found on their island.Tory's dad's employer, the doctor who's lab they stole the pup from, finds them and warns them that they might have unfortunate results from the illness they contracted from the dog--just as their bunker is attacked by unknown gun shooting men. The doctor sends the kids and pup through the escape tunnel, then collapses it so the kid can escape, but is killed in the aftermath. The rest of the book is devoted to finding out who and why they were attacked, what has happened to them as result of catching the dog's virus, and learning what to do with themselves with these new powers.Tory's life is complicated by a crush on the richest kid in school, and n Charlotte society, her dad's ditzy girlfriend who insists she prepare for her "comng out"--something the tom-boy Tory is not interested in at all, and the way the snobby kids in heir school treat these outsiders. All in all a fun and interesting book to read--IF one is interested in anything paranormal.

First off, I do not think this book is young adult. It reads much more like middle grade. At the beginning I did not like the voice of the main character. I thought the author was searching too hard to capture today's youth and coming up with something that was just hard to read. Over the course of the book, I became more used to the voice and it was less bothersome.I like that there is a strong girl protagonist who is not pitted against other girls. So many books about girls don't seem to think that a girl can stand up to boys or men as the antagonist. Also, the main character has four friends who are all boys. Not sure if that is good or not, but she is definitely their leader. There are a couple of inconsistencies in the book. For example, at one point one of the kids describes the World War 1 as being in this century. Even I don't consider that this century since that was in the 20th century and we are now in the 21st. Plus all the kids in the book would have been born after the turn of the millennium so the 1910s would seem like ancient history to them. In fact, given that it is now 2015, WW1 was more than 100 years ago. That's all pretty minor though. The book gets off to a slow start, although interesting. By the end it has picked up a lot of momentum, becoming something of a thriller. There is a bit of blood, gore, and murder involved but not more than your average kid could handle.
