This book features the first original story conceived by Hayao Miyazaki in 1980 for Princess Mononoke. And the original Japanese book titled just もののけ姫 (Princess Mononoke) was published in 1993.The story in this book is totally different from the actual animated film that came out in 1997.This is actually more like a children book with large drawings and a few lines of text on each page. The beautiful drawings are done in typical Miyazaki style in pencils and watercolours. The story is simple and straightforward. The book includes an afterword by Miyazaki that explains the purpose of the drawings. They are actually for selling the project to a film company or TV station. So actually, the drawings are considered pretty rough although most parts are coloured in, some bits not. Overall, the book feels unfinished because of that. The drawings work like storyboards and you may be able to learn something by looking at how Miyazaki stages the scenes.I'm not sure if it's a worthwhile purchase, but if you're a Miyazaki fan, then you could consider it.3.5 out of 5 stars.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

"Princess Monoke: The first story" is a fantastic picture book by Hayao Miyazaki. While the book shares the same title as the Miyazaki directed Studio Ghibli film the book predates the film and the two works are otherwise totally unrelated. The plot of Princess Monoke is a rather straight forward fairy tale quest. I won't go into details other than to say that it involves a samurai who has given his daughter to a cat like beast in exchange for saving his life. The book itself is an a quite large book, similar in size to ViZ's other studo ghibli art books. The illustrations are gorgeous watercolor paintings but have a real loose, almost quick study feel to them. Seeing Miyazaki's work is a real treat and it's impressive to see how much movement and emotion he conveys with just a few lines in his art.The text is minimal and the overall look of the work is that if a larger, much thicker children's book complete with dust jacket.I enjoyed the story and the art immensely. Obviously this book would appeal most to fans of Studio Ghibli. Reading through it one can see the beginning of ideas that would crop up in later films.Overall this is an easy recommendation for any Ghibli fan or those who collect picture books. Well worth the price!

I really love Miyazaki and Ghibli. Princess Mononoke is my favorite anime/movie in general ever, so I had to buy this. This story is more like a folktale than the movie, albeit a dark undisneyfied one. I can see where to movie concepts came from but they are different here. Basically A young lady needs to save her father (a samurai lord) from demonic possession, and also ends up bethrpthed to a giant cat being (the "mononoke" here.) They don't get along at first but later grow on each other. It touches on ecological themes at the end, when her posessed father has transformed their once simple abode into a dystopian military stockade, echoing Iron Town. You don't have to know the movie if you read this though, think of it as a "reboot" before the comic book movie market became saturated with them.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my wife since we both love Miyazaki movies. Our dog is named Noke, after Princess Mononoke, so you'd guess that we're a fan of this story. What a great buy. The book is a little expensive but it is a huge, well-made hardcover copy. It really stands out in your bookshelf and almost has that collectible feeling to it.Also, for any fans of the story, it's a great and simple read.I actually think it's a great children's book even if you haven't seen the movie. Beautifully drawn.A new feature in our bookshelf.

Some of Miyazaki's finest hand-drawn fantasy artwork is in this book. I bought it for a 6-year-old friend; he was entranced by the pictures. As noted elsewhere, the story, a simple tale of evil and redemption, bears no resemblance to the much later "Princess Mononoke" movie. For those familiar with Miyazaki's films, it's fun to spot the appearance of several archetypal characters he recreated again and again in various settings. For instance, the cat seen on the cover and in other pictures facially resembles the Cat Bus in My Neighbor Totoro. The illustrations are five-star, but I rated the book four stars for a couple of technical issues: the color reproduction on some pages is too pale, and the english text occasionally has vocabulary that will need to be interpreted by adults for children who can otherwise easily follow the story.

This version of Princess Mononoke was written in 1980, well before the movie was released and well before Hayao Miyazaki directed his famous movies. I love this book, not necessarily for the story, but for how so much of this story ended up in his OTHER movies. Parts of this story end up in Totoro, Spirited Away, and a few others. Very little of this story ended up in the final film, but I loved it anyway.

I’ve been a Miyazaki fan since 1992 but I don’t love everything. This is one of those times.

The book itself was good and what I expected, however the condition I received it in was not. When it got to me, the book cover was smudged and dirty. There was a sticky spot on the front. I wiped it down with a damp sponge and got most of it off, but I am disappointed in the condition it was in. I was expecting a brand new item.

My friend LOVED this book, it sits on her coffee table so she can share it with others :) Great buy!

My father enjoyed this book.

It's clear how from Obama's life how he became such a eloquent, elegant, intellectual, disciplined, balanced and compassionate man. I am impressed at how fascinating his life has been and by that I mean before his presidency. I am a big fan of Obama and his family based on what he achieved as our 44th president but after reading the book I know he earned every bit of his soulful nature. Well written and enjoyably readable, he is candid about his achievements and failures. His humanness but yet his extraordinary perseverance make him a fascinating main character. I particularly liked reading about his family in Africa and the time he spent with them. I have no doubt how formative it was for him to be a biracial, half African, half midwestern American living his childhood largely with his grandparents in Oahu having also spent a few of his young years in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather. This is a treat to read!!!!

As Joe Scarborough has joked, Obama wrote his autobiography before he had really done anything. There are benefitsto this. The Audacity of Hope was written when he was already a Senator and about to run for President, and by thenhis political skills had developed considerably. I expect that his next memoir will be extremely well written and polished. But Dreams From My Father is the book that most explains who Obama is. His strengths and weaknesses, which makehim so admired by many and feared by his opponents, come out strongly. Opponents of Obama will find reasons to empathizewith his experience and that of his family, but also will see how that experience shaped his worldview that was imposed onthe American people. This book should also show why many people voted for him in the first place, not only becausehe is an eloquent speaker and skilled writer, but because he has a compelling personal story.Besides the trip to Kenya to search for his family roots, there is an extended reflection on his experience in Chicago as acommunity organizer. I think this reveals a lot about Obama's qualities as well. There is a true desire to help and improve,an intellectual talent, and yet there's always a geographical displacement and emotional detachment, an outsider's perspectivelooking in, that somehow distances him even as he tries to immerse in the milieu. (Contrast Bill Clinton's I feel your pain). He issensitive, perhaps too sensitive and questioning, and yet somehow not empathetic enough for the opposing point of view (e.g.pro life). The end of the book has a reflection from a few years later on being a law student, on justifying the justice system for thepowerless, making clear that he was not only liberal but radical. This shows how in his later political career, even when he triedto transcend partisanship and made a lot of intellectual deliberation, he almost always arrived at conclusions on the left end ofthe spectrum, because he was coming from the far left end. For instance, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, from whom he later had todistance himself, is just a regular normal character in the narrative but was in fact a radical liberationist in his theology. To me the book resembles, in some respects, even the gentle but dark humor, Dennis Kucinich's Courage to Survive, wherehe did in Cleveland what Obama did in Chicago. I can see why Kucinich eventually endorsed Obama even though by 2008 hehad smoothed out his radicalism.Despite the conflict between Western liberalism and traditional African values, Obama is very much a feminist and the Western positionwon out despite his sympathy for Africa. And yet one of the more compelling passages of the book for me, not politically but personally,is at the end where he reflects on how even in a family where the women have held together, the men have often been plagued bydoubts about their race and their masculinity and the cruelty that being male can bring with it. Regardless of politics, that is somethingthat the Obama family seems to have modeled well and overcome in the next generation, with his daughters although he didn't have boys.

It's a wonder I haven't read this book before. Since I first heard about it, I knew it would eventually drift my way and I am thankful it has. Barack's story, like so many others, is one of identity, affirmation, and of his profound sense of being present. Through eloquence and a seemingly poetic choice of words, we ride with him on a bumpy train of curiosity, loss, self exploration, personal development, persistence and joy. We visit each home and at each instance he brings it to life wrapping it in context and history and forcing readers to consider its impact on those involved. As an African American man who has gained some momentum in being authentically me, I appreciate how much of him is also an amalgamation of those closest to him. Thank you Barack for sitting down and taking the time to share your journey with me, it was a worthy venture to explore this chapter in your life. However, as it should be, I'm left wanting more.

The best version of this is the audio version which Obama reads himself, even with different accents. This is a poignant book which describes his multi-cultural, biracial upbringing and thus explains his constant urge to help people understand each other, his desire to bridge divides. I had a paperback copy but I bought both the hardback version of the book, for enjoyment in the years to come, and the audio, which is captivating.

I wanted to read this over the length of his presidency, but it never happened. It was a great read. Really helped me understand inner city life and the struggles of the black community. I appreciate his honesty and how hard he fought to make people's lives easier. Makes sense why he was such a great president. I was especially moved with how he explained the challenges of being both white and black. Such a great memoir. Fantastic.

A well-written book with unique insight on the early thinking of our future President. Although it is not a traditional autobiography, it has an even-paced narrative that sounds genuine and non-political. The only downside from my perspective is the lack of closure with his experience as a community organizer in Chicago. It seems that he accomplished a lot in Chicago and he vowed to return after his time in Harvard. But I'm curious to know the progress of Altgeld Gardens. Did he pick up where he left off? Or did he simply moved on because there's not much else he could've done. All in all, it's a very good read.

This is well written but a tad boring. The author has enough sense of humor to season it a bit but didn't use it. Too bad. This is an early work from our former president and it somewhat shows in the delivery. That said, it addresses and evidences the difficulties inherent to a bi-racial/bi-families child.

Review

“Every now and again an idea from science escapes from the lab and takes on a life of its own as an explanation for all mysteries, a validation of our deepest yearnings, and irresistible bait for journalists and humanities scholars. Examples include relativity, uncertainty, incompleteness, punctuated equilibrium, plasticity, complexity, epigenetics, and, for much of the twenty-first century, mirror neurons. In this lively, accessible, and eminently sensible analysis, the distinguished cognitive neuroscientist Greg Hickok puts an end to this monkey business by showing that mirror neurons do not, in fact, explain language, empathy, society, and world peace. But this is not a negative exposé―the reader of this book will learn a great deal of the contemporary sciences of language, mind, and brain, and will find that the reality is more exciting than the mythology.” - Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works and The Blank Slate“A devastating critique of one of the most oversold ideas in psychology.” - Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero“This book is the scientific analog of a courtroom thriller: against long odds, the brilliant underdog logically, methodically, and with disarming grace and hard facts takes down his fashionable opponent―the ‘Mirror Neuron’ colossus, long the darling of the don’t-look-too-closely crew. Hickok does not leave us empty-handed, however, but outlines what an alternative to mirror theory might look like.” - Patricia Churchland, professor of philosophy emerita at the University of California, San Diego“[Hickock’s] impressive handling of basic neuroscience makes a complex topic understandable to the general reader as he delves into cutting-edge science.” - Publishers Weekly“A bold look at one of the most exciting theories in neuroscience [and] an inspiring example of experimental science at work: The initial theory of mirror neurons may have had a false start, but it inspired an even more complex and interesting story that is just beginning to unfold.” - Kirkus Reviews

This book criticizes hype from scientists and the media about embodied cognition, mirror neurons, and the differences between the left and right brain hemispheres. Popular accounts of these ideas contain a little bit of truth, but most versions either explain very little or provide misleading explanations.A good deal of our cognition is embodied in the sense that it's heavily dependent on sensory and motor activity. But we have many high-level thoughts that don't fit this model well, such as those we generate when we don't have sensory or motor interactions that are worth our attention (often misleading called a "resting state").Humans probably have mirror neurons. They have some value in helping us imitate others. But that doesn't mean they have much affect on our ability to understand what we're imitating. Our ability to understand a dog wagging its tail isn't impaired by our inability to wag our tails. Parrots' ability to imitate our speech isn't very effective at helping them understand it.Mirror neurons have also been used to promote the "broken mirror theory" of autism (with the suggestion that a malfunction related to mirror neurons impairs empathy). Hickok shows that the intense world hypothesis is more consistent with the available evidence. The book clarified my understanding of the brain a bit. But most of it seems unimportant. I had sort of accepted mild versions of the mirror neuron and left-brain, right brain hype, but doing so didn't have any obvious effects on my other beliefs or my actions. It was only at the book's end (discussing autism) that I could see how the hype might matter. Most of the ideas that he criticizes don't do much harm, because they wouldn't pay much rent if true. Identifying which neurons do what has negligible effect on how I model a person's mind unless I'm doing something unusual like brain surgery.

The book is well written and thorough from where I stand: well outside the field of neuro-science.For me its greatest value lies in that it is exceptionally as a critique. It points to mirror neurons strengths as well as weaknesses throughout the book, and the way to the conclusion underplays nothing as far as this lay-reader can see.

When I first saw the title of this book, I was taken aback. I had read various books written by science writers and researchers on various topics from consciousness, the sense of self, autism and even psychopathy and all of them had treated mirror neurons as firm established scientific fact. These authors then used mirror neurons to explain aspects of their subjects. Then I see this book entitled; "The Myth of Mirror Neurons", and figured it was written by a type of anti-scientific crank and was curious. Now that I have read the book, I know that the author is far from an anti-science crank dismissing a firm scientific fact. The author is a professor of cognitive science and has written a very scientific and understandable book. This book teaches you about the origins of the idea of mirror neurons at first. Then in a very coherent and well argued style the book reveals that mirror neurons have been taken up by many researchers as an explanation of brain functions for which there is little real evidence that the mirror neurons are the true basis. Indeed, the mirror neurons may not actually exist, but such functions may be parts of other areas in the brain. The book relentlessly undermines the claims of mirror neuron believers with well done experiments which always refer to the original findings of the first discoverers of mirror neurons. Essentially, you realize that mirror neurons have lost touch with reality and have been taken up as a magic bullet which explain things way beyond its explanatory basis. This book is all good science and the way things should work. Science must always self correct and not run off in unfounded directions. This not the work of a crank at all but it is a great example of the scientific method at its best. Good science must always think about the foundations of its facts otherwise the facts become beliefs.

Technically challenging but well worth the effort.

He tackled a meaty subject and challenged convention in a thoughtful debunking of the primacy of mirror neurons in any attempt to explain how we learn and what makes us human. It did feel like overkill at times, but it would be hard not to beat a dead horse when challenging fundamental scientific assumptions. Stay tuned for more on the heels of this skeptical shot across the bow.

While the subject of the book is mirror neurons and you get an good explanation of claims being made for them as well as the evidence or lack thereof for such claims, you also get a nice example of how science works. I was interested in the book because I have heard so much about mirror neurons and I wanted to understand what they were really all about. However, I found myself drawn to the author's contrary view which is very well articulated and argued.I think people interested in the brain and science in general will enjoy this book, but if the idea of a book about a very specific topic within neuroscience doesn't sound appealing, you probably aren't going to like it. Otherwise I easily recommend it.

A very engaging overview of mirror neurons and their role. As made clear by the title, the author contends that mirror neurons are not the foundation of understanding the motivations of others or learning new skills. He makes a solid argument that seems to give fair consideration of the opposing view.

Excellent, tightly argued, detailed discussion of evidence. My focus is ASD; didn't completely agree w/ his analysis of ASD, though he is right to emphasize that we interact socially using multiple brain systems organized hierarchically, that the role of sensory systems is vastly under appreciated, and that no single theory can yet match the extraordinary diversity of the ASD population.

Our little one loves the Ollie Books so it was natural we bought this one. I think this is the shortest in length. I do love the artwork in this one. The hearts are a metalic material and at the end there is a mirror in the Valentine so the baby can see themselves in the book. That part in particular is our baby's favorite. I do wish they had written it in a way that Ollie wasn't so whiny. (Sadly seems to be a trend in these books).

Cute characters. Expected more of a story. Just very disappointing. I thought it would have had a little nice story, but it was barely a couple words on each of the few pages considered to be this joke of a book

This book is the most charming Valentine I could ever imagine! The little one I sent it towas enchanted by it and especially the end (won't spoil the surprise). Olivier Dunreais a wonderful author and illustrator of such charming characters like Ollie, Gerdie and Peedie!

My girls love the Gossie and Friends books. My 1 year old really likes the mirror at the end of the book.

Adorable book. Love all the books in this series. Got this as a gift for our niece who was 4 months old at the time.
