I picked this book up as an ancillary textbook for one of my PhD Statistics classes. This is NOT a statistics textbook. It IS a solid SPSS textbook that will walk you through many/most of the common and basic tests. It also happens to be a fantastic reference for writing up results in APA format. A lot of books are absolutely horrendous with APA formatting, and this one gives sample sections for reporting results for the type of test covered in each chapter.I have the GradPack version of SPSS, and I bought the older version of this book specifically for the overview of SPSS procedures and the APA examples. The 6th edition is written for SPSS version 18.00. I'm currently using SPSS Version 23 on my MacBook Pro, and most of the machines in our lab are PCs running Version 22 or 23. All the examples that I looked at are the same, or it's easy to figure out the changes in the newer version of SPSS. One of my professors suggested that we buy an older version of the book, since not much has changed with the main statistical functions that we are using.
My review is positive, do not misunderstand me, but for the price, I did not find a difference in the 6th and 7th edition. If allowed by your professor go for the 6th edition. The information and procedures are the same.
I'm currently taking an Applied Statistics class in Grad School and this book is not what I thought it was. Our professor said we needed it for the class and it doesn't actually teach you statistics. You will only be learning how to use the SPSS program with this book. If you don't know the fundamentals of statistics, you will need supplemental help because this book is not going to teach you.
The book was suppose to be used good. It was used fair. The jacket cover was ripped . Some of the pages were stained. The only good thing is there isn't any highlights or writing on the pages. I paid way to much.
Not an easy read and not the best introduction to the topic. Working the problems helps, but a difficult work to apply to the everyday researcher.
Overall, this is a helpful step-by-step reference guide for using SPSS with all its functions.
The book does a good job at explaining statistical concepts and steps in SPSS. However, the authors or editor failed to truly update the book. In this 7th edition, one can still find outdated terms such as "floppy disk." There are also syntactical mistakes and mismatch in some steps --this can be a turn off for some people such as myself. Given the high cost of this book, I expected the product to be of the highest standards; unfortunately, I was not impressed.Jolie
I got this book on the recommendation of a former stats TA. It's way more straightforward than the other "easy" guides to SPSS. It basically takes you through the type of psych issue you would be trying to address, and explain the stats and then shows you how to execute the command on SPSS using screen shots. I've sent this book to everyone that is in my program and I think about 5 have been purchased.

My third graders had really ejnoyed a cross-curricular unit on Gingerbread Men stories, so I was tickled to find a "runaway wok" story. I almost didn't purchase this book, however, because of two strongly negative reviews that complained of a class-war message. I thought that this, in fact, might lend itself to a good class discussion of values. My students immediately picked up on the familiar Gingerbread Man elements, enjoying the fact that this story was related to what they'd been learning about in our unit on China. Yes, the poor family is aided by a wok that steals from a stingy wealthy family, and brings the booty back to a kind poor family. Is this not the stuff of many children's fairy tales, folklore, and legends? Third graders, at least, are able to make judgements about the moral merits of the actions, and did so in my classroom. Some compared it to Robin Hood as well as the Gingerbread Man. The Runaway Wok was a big hit with my students. I'm glad I added it to my collection!
Cute book. My daughter borrowed a copy from one of her teachers, and we both loved it so much we had to buy our own for our library. Good illustrations, easy concepts for a young child to understand, with a singing theme so kids love to sing along, etc. One of our favorites. Perfect!
After getting this book at a local library my son loved it so much that we picked it up for him to own. We brought it to his third grade class during Chinese New Year they all love to the story. The other teachers asked to borrow the book as well to read to their classes
This is an adorable book and sweet variation of the famous book "The Gingerbread Man" that i love. My son loved this book. The illustrations are amazing. Highly recommend.
The kids lived the illustrations and the story!! Cute book. For some reason I thought it taught the meaning behind Chinese New Year and it does not, but still a good story!!
