I could not believe my eyes when I found this book in a bookstore in the United States (Georgia). Mogi has finally published a book in English! I was thrilled. So, who is Ken Mogi? In my opinion, he is one of the top intellectuals in the world, let alone in Japan. He is a neuroscientist, but not a typical one by any means. His knowledge seems to encompass everything---science, philosophy, art, literature, history, law, etc. He has written nearly a hundred books in Japanese (I have read at least half of Mogi's books). This book is about "Ikigai", which is a Japanese word for describing the pleasures and meanings of life. The key message of this book: As long as you have your own ikigai, you can live happily---no matter which part of the world you live in.Mogi describes "the Five Pillars", which are the key factors that lead you to ikigai:1. Starting small2. Releasing yourself3. Harmony and sustainability4. The joy of small things5. Being in the here and nowThe book is replete with examples of Japanese professionals---sushi chefs, sumo wrestlers, anime creators, Zen Buddhists, and many others. Don't be thrown off by these "local" (i.e., Japanese) examples---if you think Mogi is bragging about the "coolness" of the Japanese culture, you have missed his point. These examples, although seemingly "local", are at the same time "universal": anyone in the world can learn from these examples to understand how “ikigai” works in real life. This book is a hidden gem in the English-speaking world. Although it is a short read, it has a significant profundity and practicality.Mogi is not only ridiculously smart but also warm-hearted. I can tell that Mogi truly wishes the readers to grasp the concept of ikigai so that we can live a happier life.I can't wait to read his second book in English.

Great if you want to know about Japanese culture, not great if you want help finding your Ikigai. I thought the book would discuss more about exercises and things *I* could do to find my Ikigai. There are some helpful tidbits, but didn't find it comprehensive enough to satisfy what I was looking for.It does go into thorough detail about some practices of Japanese culture, how Ikigai is used for sushi restaurants, Sumo wrestling, and pottery... But those go into the detail about those specific practices, which basically indicates that I have found my Ikigai once I start practicing something in such a detailed manner.Overall, if you're looking to find your Ikigai, I do not recommend this book. If you want to learn about how Japanese implement Ikigai, then I would recommend it.

A small, well-written work with feet planted in the Buddhist tenet of mindfulness. Author Ken Mogi explains how the Japanese practice self-awareness as the starting point for a more meaningful daily life. Much of this is "educated" common sense: starting small, releasing yourself, harmony and sustainability, the joy of small things and being in the here and now.His interesting illustrations/examples include people ranging from potters to candy makers to sumo wrestlers. Exotic as these are, they actually connect easily with the American (and other Western) contexts rather easily. His observations about the need to release oneself from enmeshment in daily routines and self-imposed limits as well as on the enjoyment of small things resonated particularly with me.This is a thoughtful and interesting "self-help" book that gets beyond the "woo-hoo" element and is actually full of real wisdom.

I was fascinated to learn about the Japanese concept of Ikigai, “a reason for being,” and the strategies for developing Ikigai in our lives. As a psychologist, I am very familiar with Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “flow” - a state of concentration or complete absorption with an optimally challenging activity so that nothing else matters. In a flow state, people are happiest and the goal of Ikigai is to lead us to this experience by “being in the here and now.”.

Ken Mogi has written an informative book on Ikigai, while avoiding repeating himself excessively as many modern writers do. I enjoyed his stories to explain the concepts, and found I learned a great deal about Japenese culture, and developed a greater appreciation for different events I did not have a clear understanding of. I recommend this book.

Well written account of examples, taken from japanese day to day experiences, of the main elements in ikigay. If you are educated in Japan, you don't need it. If you come from occidental upbringing, it is of limited value to find your ikigay... but worth the reading to see how Japan looks at itself.

Had high hopes based on reviews of author but I found that the read was mostly artless and filled with platitudes. I did learn a little more about Japanese culture through the many antidotes (the bulk of the book) which was good but once again, artlessly written to the extent that even these stories became tiresome.

Very interesting reading!

Conservatism: An Invitation to the Great Tradition, by Roger Scruton

Review

"Conservatism, as Roger Scruton reminds us, was founded during the 18th-century Enlightenment…Society is best seen as a social contract, these Enlightenment thinkers said. Free individuals get together and contract with one another to create order. Conservatives said we agree with the general effort but think you’ve got human nature wrong.” ―David Brooks, New York Times"[Conservatism] buoyed my spirits, and helped me regain my bearings. Reading it, for me, was like feeling an unexpectedly cool, dry breeze on a stiflingly humid day." ―Andrew Sullivan, New York Magazine

Wow! Who knew I agreed with and thought in terms of conservative thought. I simply had no idea how much simply wrong information I have been programmed with over the years. As I entitled this review, this great work has an appropriate name. It is an invitation to continue, to transmit the way of life that is inherent to us. So many of us in the English and American tradition are simply not taught at all or are piecemeal taught our great political heritage. This book is a great first step, or in my case, a great second step on the road to understanding WHY. Why I and others believe what we believe and WHY we act the way we do. The why is so very important. If we don’t know why we can try like so many to save our culture but end up actually hurting it.Hence, this work is a call to think. It is a call to act. It is a call to think about those who have gone before and those yet to be born before and while we act.

Sometimes things must be changed to preserve them. This may seem paradoxical, but for the political philosopher, Roger Scruton, it’s at the heart of Conservatism. This is a power packed book of 164 pages of text that traces the origins, development, evolution and definition of Conservatism to present day America and Great Britain. The book transcends political parties. So, first, some distinctions to avoid confusion. Americans tend to politically bifurcate their fellow citizens as either liberals or conservatives, the left (Democrats) or the right (Republicans), often labeled as either liberals/progressives or conservatives. The reality is that there is a spectrum of political nuances. These range from the far-left to the far right including Independents who claim no party affiliation and vote for candidates regardless of their political party affiliations.Yet both parties have their origin in Classical Liberalism. That is, they root their political legitimacy in the preambles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. This is what ultimately bonds Americans as fellow citizens. The key difference between Conservatives and Progressives, says Scruton, is about what’s to be emphasized: freedom or equality. But these two concepts albeit interdependent and interrelated are inherently antagonistic when it comes to prioritization. As the economists say: “there’s a price for everything.” If freedom is emphasized, equality suffers. If equality is emphasized, freedom is lessened. And getting the right balance quickly becomes heated.Scruton’s Conservatism is certainly related to but distinct from conservative—a lower case c—as used in our daily political vocabulary. For the true Conservative is never a prisoner of a political party or its ideology or dogmas. Conservatism is about preserving the heritage of Western civilization and its American birthchild: the dignity of the person, natural rights, and the consent of the governed. As the world changes so too does our understanding of the concepts of freedom and equality deepen, mature and are animatedly debated. With over 325 million Americans pursuing their own goals of happiness, conflict will be as abundant as the air we breathe. Add to that the buffeting of 7.5 billion other human beings on the planet with their own worldviews and interests. Thus, there will be no end to human conflict and a constant struggle to maintain national political order, ever exacerbated by the geopolitical.Scruton’s well-made argument is that Conservatives must adapt to these new realities to preserve the inheritance of Western civilization. To make these adjustments, Conservatives place great emphasis upon the wisdom distilled from human experience and learning handed down through tradition, customs, and religion. They are highly skeptical of utopian isms: communism, socialism, Fascism, Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, etc. Instead of a pathway to a heaven on earth, they have resulted in a living hell.Given human imperfection and the propensity of the lesser angels of our nature to run wild, Conservatives stress practical solutions over theory, the good over the perfect, and the necessary virtues of justice, fortitude, prudence, and temperance (emblazoned on the walls of the Library of Congress) to maintain order and achieve prosperity.Scruton identifies two operating and differing philosophies, rarely articulated, that underlies political order. For Conservatives political order (a democratic system) is what makes freedom possible and secures it. For Liberals/Progressives political order arises first from individual freedom. These views, he insightfully and tightly argues, are what ultimately underlies an emphasis on what comes first: freedom or equality. The book deserves reading by both Conservatives and Progressives to better understand one another. An automobile works best with both a break and a gas pedal. So, too, in a democracy. Furthermore, reading Conservatism may reduce some of the demonization that seems to characterize the current state of both political bodies.

I've read a great many of Scruton's works. I consider myself a real conservative in the Burkean tradition. I like George Will and Kevin Williamson, among others, but I find Scruton's rigor and accessibility to be extraordinary. Read this lengthy essay and I guarantee you'll be looking for more of his work.

My introduction to Roger Scruton was from his book Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left. That book is a heavy dissection and deconstruction of the thought of many Leftist philosophers. I was impressed enough with his erudition to read this book which is much better suited to the general reader. It is a short book(200 pages) but covers a lot of territory and traces the history of Conservative thought from Aristotle to Edmund Burke to Hegel to William F Buckley, Jr.(and numerous others) and even includes brief mention of the author’s own (significant) contributions to Conservative philosophy and apologetics. The book gains strength as it progresses and the 2nd half of the book presents a particularly succinct and cogent portrayal of the forces arrayed against Conservatism in the 21st century. The author shows how these forces, including multiculturalism, political correctness and moral equivalence, have been arrayed with modern technology to create a new and challenging world order which Conservatism must face.Mr. Scruton defines Conservatism much as Edmund Burke and the classical Conservative philosophers present it - as a defence of the permanent things(as Russell Kirk put it) and more practically as a defence of Western civilisation and the values and first principles it is built on. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an introduction to Conservatism or to sharpen one’s convictions as to the enduring value and truth of conservative philosophy.
