About the Author
Tiago Antao Tiago Antao is a bioinformatician. He is currently studying the genomics of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, the main vector of malaria. Tiago was originally a computer scientist who crossed over to computational biology with an MSc in bioinformatics from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal. He holds a PhD in the spread of drug resistant malaria from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. Tiago is one of the coauthors of Biopython―a major bioinformatics package―written on Python. He has also developed Lositan, a Jython-based selection detection workbench. In his postdoctoral career, he has worked with human datasets at the University of Cambridge, UK, and with the mosquito whole genome sequence data at the University of Oxford, UK. He is currently working as a Sir Henry Wellcome fellow at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

This book is a great addition to the library of texts to learn advanced Python applications in biomedical sciences. One big drawback of the Python environment in this field is the paucity of textbooks beyond the most basic level. In this sense, the book by Antao is a welcome contribution.Two things you need to know right away about the book: 1) This is not a bioinformatics book, as it covers only the Python implementation of the algorithms but not their theoretical background. Furthermore, the techniques covered are intermediate and advanced bioinformatics topics (e.g. next-generation sequencing, population genetics, protein structure visualization). 2) By the same token, is not an introductory Python book, knowledge about the language and its most common scientific packages (NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib) is assumed (on the other hand, Chapter 1 - covering the installation of the software - is a little wasted because of this).The materials in each chapter are presented clearly and in a concise manner. Is very easy to follow what Python packages are being used and the differences in syntax between Python 2 and 3. The selected examples are very relatable to the biomedical scientist, making it a nice change of pace from all the finance examples commonly encountered in most Python books. The code runs smoothly without any changes, and the explanations of the commands are good although a little short every now and then.In summary, this is a great book if you are looking to implement advanced bioinformatics techniques in Python. The writing style of the author makes it very user-friendly and if he decided to write another book covering how to implement basic bioinformatic techniques (probably a Biopython manual) I wouldn't hesitate to add it to my library.
This book is an excellent bioinformatics cookbook and it covers a vast range of topics, ranging from next generation sequencing to population genetics and phylogenetics. However to take fully advantage of the book is highly recommended to have both a medium-high knowledge of python and some experience in bioinformatics. Each chapter provides python code to reproduce the analyses the author performs. Even though the author explains the code in details, the code often is not trivial and a certain experience with python is required. Similarly, a previous knowledge of bioinformatic technologies is desirable as the book often uses a terminology (such as fastq, bam, vcf, etc.) that won’t be familiar to those that haven’t any experience in bioinformatics.The book is well organized and structured. The first chapter helps the reader to set up a python environment through Anaconda or Docker. In the following chapter the author starts to talk about bioinformatics and the first topic he touches is NGS (next generation sequencing). I found this chapter very interesting as it shows how to deal efficiently with the usually huge fastq files and how to perform simple but useful analyses such as quality control of the sequencing reads by position. In the same chapter the author talks about the variant call format (VCF) and how to work with it through libraries such as pyVCF. The next chapter is dedicated to whole genome sequences in fasta format and to genome annotations in GFF/GTF formats. The following chapters are about population genetics and phylogenetics. Even though I’m not an expert of these fields and I was not aware of the formats used (such as genepop) I could enjoy the reading and the code was straightforward enough to be easily understandable. Then the author explains how to use PDB (the protein data bank) and the software PyMol. A very interesting (and in my opinion important) chapter is the last one where the author discusses how to deal efficiently with big genomics datasets. Here the authors talks about concurrency and ipython parallel computing, and shows how it is possible to speed up your python code by using libraries such as Cython and Numba.Overall the book is well written and organized and is a good cookbook for bioinformaticians.
I've been in computational biology for a long time, and I find this to be one of the most impressive practical and comprehensive books I've come across (and I go through a lot!) It provides an incredibly wide survey of different domains of computational biology (e.g., protein structure, genomics, and much more), combined with lots of good Python programming advice (e.g., use of IPython/Jupyter notebooks, provided by the author). And it's about as up to date as imaginable -- quite a tour de force!

I just wanted to get a sound foundation for working with some rest apis and web services that return json. And this book did that perfectly well for me.
What can I say. It's an O'Reilly book. The book is a good intro to JSON. You can find all of the same information online. If you are like me and on occasion like flipping through paper, this is worth the money.
Even if you know nothing about programming you will understand this book. It is extremely clear. It is an excellent book to begin learning JSON, JSON Schema, and beginning JSON security vulnerabilities and what to do about them. It was written in 2015 and therefore is more up-to-date than other books. It touches on other related technologies like AngularJS, Node, etc. JSON doesn't care about what language you write in - PHP, ASP.NET, HTML, etc.This book gives plain English examples, then progresses to simple JSON coding. It does not give a lot of extra examples to work through, but does show what to watch out for, and references to other resources. You can read this book in a day or two, perhaps in a few hours. It's only 112 pages including the index.If you want to know if what you are crafting is good JSON data, but don't need to understand the in-depth programming of JSON, then this is an especially good book.If you are a total beginner to programming, or don't know a lot of programming lingo, then this is a great book.If you already know some JSON, this book is NOT for you, go buy a different book.

Curt Dudley-Marling is a professor in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where he teaches courses in literacy and language arts. Rabbi J. David Bleich offers readers his opinion of what Orthodox Jews should believe. He states that the idea that Judaism is a religion that is not based on dogmas is wrong; “it is a gross error to assume (that Judaism’s stress to observe commandments) is accompanied by a diminution of obligation with regard to belief.†He writes: “The concept of the Messiah is one example of a fundamental principle of belief†despite the fact that it is not in the Torah, originated a couple of centuries BCE, and “there existed a legitimate divergence of opinion†about it. Another principle is: “Recognition of the existence of the Deity (which) entails acknowledgment of His authority over us.â€Rabbi Bleich examines and explains the thinking of many ancient thinkers. Readers may be surprised to learn that the two versions of Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles of Judaism are “abridged versions (that) not only lack in comprehensiveness but are, at times, inaccurate†despite being inserted into the sidur, the daily prayer book. They may also be surprised to read that many scholars felt there are no single articles of belief. In fact, the sage Abarbanel and kabbalists insisted that that “all teachings of the Torah are equally binding,†Moses Mendelssohn stated “Judaism is a religion which is not rooted in dogma,†and sages such as Hasdai Crescas, Simon ben Zemach Duran, and Joseph Albo developed lists of basic beliefs different than Maimonides. Additionally, L. Strauss and others asserted that Maimonides wrote his Thirteen Principles for average Jews so they would have something to base their Judaism on, while he himself only accepted the idea that Jews should recognize the existence of the deity and strive to know God through the study of the laws of nature. Rabbi Bleich’s approach is to describe divergent outlooks but state he is convinced his understanding is correct, in this case that Jews are obligated to have a set of beliefs.His conclusion on whether Spinoza was a Jewish philosopher is another example. He informs us that Jewish philosophers had widely different concepts about God. He mentions that some kabalistic outlooks are close to pantheism, that God and nature are the same. He casts aside the judgment of several scholars who insist that Spinoza was not a pantheist and maintains that Spinoza held this view. Then states: “Spinoza’s philosophical system is, at best, the illegitimate issue of authentic precursors. As such, it is beyond the pale of Jewish philosophy.â€Readers will find much else in this book that will prompt them to think and decide it they agree with Rabbi Bleich, including the rabbi’s understanding of the unity of God, is there such a thing as natural law, are non-Jews expected to observe the Noahide commandments, is there ethics beyond Torah law, what obligation do Jews have to the non-Jewish world, resurrection, suicide, and much more.

I intended to buy a book on modern railway signaling and switching. This ain't it. If you want to see some excellent pictures and learn about the history of railroad signaling this might be good for you. I didn't read it. A quick glance looking for the answers to my questions led me to realize this wasn't for me.
After having traveled by train and been at the train station to pickup guests in the period of time from 2008 until 2011, I found this book to be very informative. Suddenly, I was able to tell just how far away a train was by looking at the signals on the side of the tracks. I also write articles for my website blog on old farm tractors and farm machinery. I often include in the articles a short description of how the particular tractor or farm machine made its way from the factory to the dealership by train. Information about railroad signaling gained from this book also a great deal of interesting detail to the articles.
Excellent resource for learning different types of railroad signals. We used it as a reference when preparing a signals class for a Boy Scout rairoad merit badge program. I plan to donate it to the library of our railroad club.
I have read other books on railroad signalling that have always been equally well thought out and presented. However, they were almost exclusively focused on the British Isles. This is the first book that I have come across that not only sheds light on the long forgotten world of mechanical signalling in the United States; but also makes technological comparisons between Great Britain's signalling progress as compared to the United State's. It also includes diagrams, thorough explanations to signalling practice and excellent pictures on the infrastructure behind the signals. This book is a must have for realistic railroad modelers and railroad historians anywhere on the North American continent and beyond.
Same kind of information you would read on a Wikipedia page. No real technical information on what makes signaling systems operate. If you want a basic understand of railroad signal history with pretty pictures then here is your book. It's basically a pretty Wikipedia page in paperback.
This is little more than a photography book. There is little technical content, and some of the diagrams have horrendous errors. You will never learn how a dispatcher knows a block is entered from the north or south, or the dilmenas faced by engineers and dispatchers when cab signaling fails, and why someone would design an electrical relay that is kept spinning like a top. Got a Sprint phone? The connection to Southern Pacific Railroad isn't even mentioned.
Nice historical text, but thin on real details of signaling fundamentals. For a RR historian this is an essential library addition, but for the real meat and detail of signaling, other books are better choices
I enjoy this subject though this book seems as if the chapters have been mixed up at times. Early on he mentions some things (like home and distant signals) without describing what they are until later in the book. There are a handful of problems like that in the book. Better organization would be nice.Still I found it very entertaining and informative. The layout and pictures are really nice. This is something you just have to read on paper as opposed to downloading it. (And I do have a Kindle).
