A continuation of Riad Sattouf's graphic memoir of childhood. In this installment, which covers Riad at ages 6 - 7, the Sattouf family--Riad, his parents, and his baby brother--are living in a small Syrian village near Homs, where his grandmother lives as well as a number of other relatives (it almost seems as if everyone nearby is a cousin, aunt, or uncle).Riad starts school, and many scenes are set there, where corporal punishment--delivered with something that looks like a truncheon, generally as a THWACK! across the hands--is arbitrary and commonplace, and much of the education seems to be pure indoctrination. For instance, as Riad recounts it, the very first lesson is learning the national anthem ("Defenders of the Homeland, peace be with you...The home of pan-Arabism, a sacred sanctuary...Our spirit is noble and our past glorious, and our martyrs' souls are our guardians...."), and before a presidential election, the class is told, "we must all say yes to our president Hafez Al-Assad [father of the current president, Bashar Al-Assad]...So you must tell your parents to vote yes, of course, because President Assad is the father of the Syrian nation." Riad afterwards reports, capturing his childhood innocence, "On February 10, 1985, Hafez Al-Assad was reelected with a 100-percent yes vote, a world record!" Assad, by the way, was the only candidate.There are other memories of these schooldays--some that seem quite ordinary and pleasant; others that will likely strike readers as much darker (e.g., playing at war against Israel, with cries of "Let's kill as many Jews as we can!...Yaay! All the Jews are dead!"). And there are many scenes set at home, where Riad's love and respect for his father are quite evident, but where he seems not to fully sense the magnitude of the tension between his French-born mother and his father, educated in France and with seemingly ambivalent feelings about traditional and modern values. The mother is generally in the background in this story, but when she emerges--for instance, immediately and forcefully condemning the honor killing of a unwed village woman who became pregnant, while Riad's father vacillates about reporting the crime--it seems apparent that conflicts are going to be a larger part of the story going forward.Another telling scene takes place late in the book when on a summer vacation in France to visit his grandparents, Riad visits the Euromarche, a superstore along the lines, I suppose, of a Target. He is overwhelmed by the selection toys, electronics, groceries, etc, and he concludes, "For me, it was the best place on earth." This is in contrast to the fact that when his father wants to purchase some luxuries for the home (to his mother, necessities, like a gas oven), he has to resort to the black market, where goods are smuggled in from Lebanon. During the same trip to get the oven, he also happily buys a VCR--a Betamax. Ulp.Book 3 in this series was published in France in Oct 2016 but will apparently not be available in the US until Aug 2018. I look forward to it!
This is an outstanding memoir. One must acknowledge that it takes place when the author is between 6 and 7. I will have to hunt down some interviews of the Mr. Sattouf, because most readers (including myself) find that his father and many aspects of Syrian government and life come across as awful. Riad is half French and half Syrian. In volume one, his father (who is educated but incredibly sexist, racist and ethnocentric) hauls the family from France to Libya and then Syria so that he can secure a teaching position. This volume takes place entirely in Syria, save for a 2 week vacation to France that Riad takes with his mother and younger brother. Riad's father constantly puts the west down and says how Syria is very superior...but Riad continually contradicts his father (for example - when he visits a doctor, the doctor tells the son and father that he should have the operation in France rather than Syria....the father refuses to tell the mother this because it goes against his propaganda).Because this is volume 2, Riad is more at the center of action than an observer of his parents. He enters school and has to deal with terrible rule beatings from his teachers and statist propaganda about religion and politics (the bit on the Presidential election is terrific). Riad has a kind heart and a keen eye - he can see that many of his classmates are very poor and some have burn marks on their face and hands (from crawling around as a baby and knocking over super hot cups of tea). He walks around with other children, picks up crabs, plays at war, forms friendships, and is occasionally ostracized and left out. Despite being set in Syria, Riad shares many universal experiences of childhood.The first volume was nominated for an Eisner award. It would have won, but it ran into incredibly stiff competition (March 2 by John Lewis won, while "The Story of My Tits" is an incredible memoir about a family's multigenerational battle with breast cancer). March 3 came out a few weeks before this, and Mr. Satouf will be hard pressed to pick up the Eisner this year. But it seems like we will have several volumes of this comic, so he should get an Eisner at some point.It's a fine work. I imagine that some Arabs will find this offensive, and that some Trumpists will cite it as an excuse to ban all Muslims (but then again, that kind of individual would not read this). Both are wrong. Frankly, it's a great story from a man raised in two worlds.
I wanted to buy volume one when it came out but decided to wait until volume 2 was released - I live in Australia and it takes forever to have it sent over and costs a fortune. So, I received both volumes at the same time and whipped through them in a day. Now I realize that volumes 3, 4, and 5 are in the pipeline. I hate it; I'm not a patient guy.The story: gut retching. Painfully honest. Frankly, I'd fear for the author's safety. I pray that the title is ironic and the it does not depict the Arab of the future but Sattouf makes it quite clear that change in the Arab world just isn't in the cards.
A brilliant, moving and funny story of the author's vivid childhood memories when his insecure but caring father takes the family from France to his poor home village in Syria. Sattouf's drawings and words bring to life his six year old feelings and fears, as well as his very specific memories of the streets, his school, and the children and adults he encounters in Syria and on vacation in France. A classic which I will re-read many times. Everyone should read it.

Bought this for a close friend who absolutely loves it...
This magazine always bothered me, the size, the ads, the price... Phaidon did a great job with this book, I like it way better than the magazines. A bit pricey, but the book is way thicker and more impressive than I'd expected.

I love this book. I read it when it first came out as a library book, and it helped me with little beauty hacks that doubled my tips as a cocktail waitress. A great starter read for those who want to learn the system. ;)Beyond that, it boasts some interesting studies and science-backed tricks, though it's NOT an instruction manual. Use it to guide your research further (disclaimer: I'm SUPER into biological anthropology. A very fun read that digests quickly.I heartily recommend it to any woman (though men would benefit from reading it too).
Contrary to what many people think there are certain features of the human body and face that have always been considered attractive, in all cultures. That is, beauty is not an invention of the media any more than cuteness is an invention of Disney (Bambi, the movie, exploited our instinctive judgements of what is cute). Neither is beauty merely in the eye of the beholder. Yet, having said that, both the media and the perceiver matters, just not as much as people tend to think.In this book Nancy Etcoff from Harvard University provides a fast paced, thoroughly researched, rich and enjoyable account of attractiveness. She provides answers to all the main questions that usually come up when attractiveness is discussed. Here is a non exhaustive list, which the basic answerQ: What is attractive?A: Averageness, symmetry, Big eyes (women), large cheekbones (men)Q: When did people start to care so much about their appearance?A: Since the dawn of timeQ: Are we nicer to more attractive individualsA: YesQ: Why are certain traits considered attractive?A: Because they are indicators of underlying qualities, such as health or fertilityThese are rough answers, and there are many important and interesting details which cannot be covered in a short review such as this. Thankfully, Etcoff goes into full detail, and even though I am sort of a minor expert on attractiveness (have published a couple of studies on memory biases associated with attractiveness), I learned many things from this book. Etcoff’s style of writing is reminiscent of Steven Pinker. Both are masters when it comes to referencing a ton of literature from very divergent sources (books, TV-shows, published articles, archeological findings, poetry etc), in a short amount of text, without affecting the flow of that text. In fact Etcoff made such an impression on me that I am almost certain to buy her next book (if she writes one), independent of what that book is about.
Nancy Etcoff presents her research in a clear and engaging way. This book is even more relevant today with eating disorder hysteria (if media causes it, why don’t we all have them?) and the “self-esteem†movement, which is just another way to disempower women. And the chapter on primate genitalia is hilarious, plus full of fun facts to share at parties during a lull in conversation.
This book let me finally come to terms with beauty as something all humans are attracted to as an evolutionary necessity. That beautiful people have a societal advatage is a given but just means the rest of us must work a bit harder. Having beauty alone is rarely enough though; one has to apply one's talents and intellect to compete in the world and to contribute successfully. This book has been well researched and the author has approached the subject in a friendly manner.
This is definitely a book that gets you thinking. I have read it multiple times and finally had to buy a copy to keep.
This is a pretty decent book but not extraordinary. It brings together many of the current observations relating to beauty (especially the female variety) but is not overly scientific -- i.e., it doesn't get bogged down in technicalities or jargon. Similarly, it relies on a Darwinian framework for interpretation but is not overly adamant about ev-psych's ability to explain everything about human behavior. I especially liked the first chapter, which reads more like an essay on beauty past and present than an intro to a science book.If there was any complaint, it was that the author wasn't daring enough and doesn't introduce any really breathtakingly new ideas. I got the impression she was mainly reporting on others' research, and I think Etcoff missed (in the next-to-last chapter) the interesting fact that in the last decade (or so) fashion seems to have flowed from the lower classes upwards, whereas throughout the rest of history it's been the other way, which is sort of what she presumes to still be the case. This doesn't detract seriously from the earlier material, which showed a touch more originality of approach. An interesting topic pretty well-covered, even if not ground-breaking in any way.

I could not believe my eyes when I found this book in a bookstore in the United States (Georgia). Mogi has finally published a book in English! I was thrilled.So, who is Ken Mogi? In my opinion, he is one of the top intellectuals in the world, let alone in Japan. He is a neuroscientist, but not a typical one by any means.His knowledge seems to encompass everything---science, philosophy, art, literature, history, law, etc. He has written nearly a hundred books in Japanese (I have read at least half of Mogi's books).This book is about "Ikigai", which is a Japanese word for describing the pleasures and meanings of life.The key message of this book: As long as you have your own ikigai, you can live happily---no matter which part of the world you live in.Mogi describes "the Five Pillars", which are the key factors that lead you to ikigai:1. Starting small2. Releasing yourself3. Harmony and sustainability4. The joy of small things5. Being in the here and nowThe book is replete with examples of Japanese professionals---sushi chefs, sumo wrestlers, anime creators, Zen Buddhists, and many others. Don't be thrown off by these "local" (i.e., Japanese) examples---if you think Mogi is bragging about the "coolness" of the Japanese culture, you have missed his point. These examples, although seemingly "local", are at the same time "universal": anyone in the world can learn from these examples to understand how “ikigai†works in real life.This book is a hidden gem in the English-speaking world. Although it is a short read, it has a significant profundity and practicality.Mogi is not only ridiculously smart but also warm-hearted. I can tell that Mogi truly wishes the readers to grasp the concept of ikigai so that we can live a happier life.I can't wait to read his second book in English.
Great if you want to know about Japanese culture, not great if you want help finding your Ikigai. I thought the book would discuss more about exercises and things *I* could do to find my Ikigai. There are some helpful tidbits, but didn't find it comprehensive enough to satisfy what I was looking for.It does go into thorough detail about some practices of Japanese culture, how Ikigai is used for sushi restaurants, Sumo wrestling, and pottery... But those go into the detail about those specific practices, which basically indicates that I have found my Ikigai once I start practicing something in such a detailed manner.Overall, if you're looking to find your Ikigai, I do not recommend this book. If you want to learn about how Japanese implement Ikigai, then I would recommend it.
A small, well-written work with feet planted in the Buddhist tenet of mindfulness. Author Ken Mogi explains how the Japanese practice self-awareness as the starting point for a more meaningful daily life. Much of this is "educated" common sense: starting small, releasing yourself, harmony and sustainability, the joy of small things and being in the here and now.His interesting illustrations/examples include people ranging from potters to candy makers to sumo wrestlers. Exotic as these are, they actually connect easily with the American (and other Western) contexts rather easily. His observations about the need to release oneself from enmeshment in daily routines and self-imposed limits as well as on the enjoyment of small things resonated particularly with me.This is a thoughtful and interesting "self-help" book that gets beyond the "woo-hoo" element and is actually full of real wisdom.
I was fascinated to learn about the Japanese concept of Ikigai, “a reason for being,†and the strategies for developing Ikigai in our lives. As a psychologist, I am very familiar with Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “flow†- a state of concentration or complete absorption with an optimally challenging activity so that nothing else matters. In a flow state, people are happiest and the goal of Ikigai is to lead us to this experience by “being in the here and now.â€.
Ken Mogi has written an informative book on Ikigai, while avoiding repeating himself excessively as many modern writers do. I enjoyed his stories to explain the concepts, and found I learned a great deal about Japenese culture, and developed a greater appreciation for different events I did not have a clear understanding of. I recommend this book.
Well written account of examples, taken from japanese day to day experiences, of the main elements in ikigay.If you are educated in Japan, you don't need it. If you come from occidental upbringing, it is of limited value to find your ikigay... but worth the reading to see how Japan looks at itself.
Had high hopes based on reviews of author but I found that the read was mostly artless and filled with platitudes. I did learn a little more about Japanese culture through the many antidotes (the bulk of the book) which was good but once again, artlessly written to the extent that even these stories became tiresome.
