A great resource but riddled with typos even in the 2nd edition. I believe English is not the author's first language. It could have used more eyes in editing, not only in proofreading but also in simplifying some clunky run-on sentences. Appendix G, a transcript of a John Carmack interview, is so rough and inaccurate that it appears nobody looked at it before publishing. Hopefully the 3rd edition will bring the book up to the level of polish it deserves.
I've just recently read "Masters of Doom" so this book feels like a great addition (and right on time) since it adds code factor to human side of the story. This book is not only great at bringing the memories and explanation how Wolf was created, but also memories about entire era -- going cheap road of 386-SX, the PC sound (or rather lack of it), etc. For me personally it also brings memories how much I hated PC architecture after switching from Amiga (even now I cannot stand x86 asm).I don't have much more to say about pros -- if you played games in '80/'90, you write programs or at least you are interested in it, and you don't mind getting back in time -- this is great read. I could hardly put it down, because one interesting chapter follows another interesting chapter. But not everything is roses -- super minor thing is intro, when author starts from the major problems of '90 computers "one word -- framebuffer", and then explains no other machine could match 386. Ooook, what it has to do with framebuffer? Other machines didn't have framebuffers or something?Another issue is coal-like structure of the cover -- it is fingerprint magnet and probably it is the first book I saw such case. After reading, the book looks like a crime scene. My major complain are diagrams. Their size. HUGE. ENORMOUS diagrams. I have the feeling if only diagram could span on two pages, author would make such move. As the effect you have little text per page and those 317 pages feel more like 150. I really hate (!) this trick, in my opinion it is simply cheating, because potential buyer sees "317 pages, whoa, a lot of reading" while in fact it is not. So great content, not great content, I will say this every time -- this is not fair-play. Author probably would not accept every second dollar from Monpoly, correct? This is especially sad if you read author blog and calculation of the book production, one way to lower the cost is saving space, i.e. using sane diagrams sizes.Even if you are warned you won't change the fact that pretty thin book will take a lot of space on the shelf. Bummer. All in all, I liked the book, I enjoyed reading it, I recommend it, but I wish author chose straightforward path.
Reading this book was a blast. A great trip down memory lane for those of us who were building and programming computers in the 1990s.Context: I am a software engineer, with lots of experience in C / C++ / assembly language / graphics, and the kind of low-level hardware programming described in this book. I was also in high school when Wolfenstein shipped, and my friends and I played it to death. If you're not a programmer the book is still interesting - it explains lots of neat tricks, plenty of photos, trivia and quotes, and fills in some backstory about how the game was developed.Of course, you should also read Masters of Doom for the full story of iD.I really hope Fabien writes a similar book on i586 / Quake!
Kudos to Fabien for making such a thorough and entertaining book about some very technical aspects of the FPS that started the craze. This isn't really a novice level book and you're not going to get the story behind the game like you would from something like Masters of Doom but it's still a great read for insight into the code behind Wolf3D.
Love how this book explains nearly every part of how this game worked on the hardware of the day, particularly the graphics. Some tricks, such as self-modifying code, are rarely used today but were a big win on the 386, which lacked an icache.
I like a lot the travel to the era of 386 CPU it's a very detailed book with huge technical details, a very good complement to Masters of Doom.I love it.
I just finished reading this book only days after it arrived. I purchased his book on Wolfenstein 3D and knew this would be worth the purchase. The contents of this book are impressive. It is the equivalent of sitting right next to Carmack and having him give you a detailed tour of his engine and work habits. All the important questions you might have about how this wonderful engine works have been covered:Memory ManagementSoftware RenderingSoundWAD FilesystemNetworkingDevelopment WorkflowsFabien provides a detailed description of the algorithms and data structures implemented in the DOOM engine. He describes the most difficult to understand areas with ease. Providing the detail you need in the format you would want.Rumour has it his next book will be for the Quake engine.I genuinely look forward to it.
Was an interesting read, had some good technical details. Would suggest reading Masters of Doom before this.

Cute book - great for dancers and non dancers alike. Age range 0-10. We will be using it for our dance studio.
My mum's name is Gwendoline so this is a great little book of fun for the whole family we loved it
I love this book. It is so sweet, funny and kind. I love that the dance instructor has an accent which makes it really fun to read outloud. My kids, ages 6 and 4, really enjoy the book and the illustrations. I appreciate how kind the characters are to each other.
This is a great children's book. The story is charming, and the artwork is fantastic. It is very colorful and vibrant. My friend's niece (age 3) wanted to have the story read to her again and again. She loved to look at the pictures, and found the pigs very cute. All in all, if you're looking for a great gift for a child (age 3 - 9 or so), then I would highly recommend this book. They will be captivated by the story, and thrilled by the colorful and bright artwork, featuring very cute pigs.
Gwendolyn, The Graceful Pig was adorable. The story was sweet, the pigs made you want them to succeed in their goals, and the Russian ballet teacher was true to the core. The illustrations were priceless! And it had a great conclusion. There was a little bit of humor that made it an enjoyable read for young dancers and parents or ballet teachers. Perfect for ages 3-6 for any young dancer with stars in their eyes.
When I brought GWENDOLYN THE GRACEFUL PIG home, the book caused quite a commotion. We read it aloud as a family and found it completely delightful. The story is clever and the illustrations are charming. My girls got a good laugh on almost every page.Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig
I read Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig to my kids. They get a tremendous kick out of the illustrations and the story. On every page there is something funny and the kids are always seeing something new in the artwork they didn't see before. The story stands up to continued retelling. I highly recommend it.
Both my kids love this book. It's great that they incorporate someone girly and a boys boy. My son also enjoys listening to this book. My daughter thinks it's terrific. We read it every night!!! Definitely one to get!

Concentrates on just a couple of families! Very limited history beyond just a few people.
It starts out really good but peters out at the end. Seems to be more about Memorial High School Basketball thank anything else.
I met Mr. Slaughter. A very pleasant person. His book is perfect for Spring Branch
I found two of my ancestors in there!
Wonderful pictures, however, there is not much written history to go along with the pictures.I recently moved out of Spring Branch and purchased a copy for my children since they were born and spent their early childhoods in the area. I felt like I was looking through a photo album, there was not much written about the background and history of the area.
This was a collection of family photos with little variety and reasoning.
this book is about where I live...very interesting pictorial history of the area...fun to read about people and families that I know and love
I love the old pictures in Spring Branch! The cover is a unique contrast of the old and the new--good choice. A good read for anyone who grew up in Spring Branch, has lived there, wants to live there, or just wants to learn of its history.

#75,590 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
This book is excellent for someone who either already has limited experience knitting or who has a friend or teacher who can answer really basic (as in "stupid") questions. If you don't fit into either of these categories, there is no way you will "teach yourself visually knitting" just with this book. There are too many gaps. For example, there is the assumption that you instinctively know which is the "right" side and which is the "wrong" side, among other basic bits of knowledge. This may or may not be important, but when the instructions say do this on the right side and that on the wrong side, you'd like to know before proceeding. Being told that the "wrong" side is the side you don't see when you're wearing it is not helpful because, right now, you're not wearing it. Being shown what the right side looks (or should look) like and what the wrong side looks like, would be. (When you are really beginning, the anatomy of a stitch is not exactly obvious. You're just following a sequence of instructions and not sure why or how it all fits in at the end).I also didn't find the "mistakes" section as clear as I would have liked: what is a "dropped" stitch? How did it happen? What can I do to prevent it? At a critical point such as a mistake (where you're close to panicking that you've just blown the whole project!) a few more photographs in the sequence of steps would have made an already tense situation a little less tense.Assuming that you are truly gifted and that you make it to the end of your project and now you now want to get the knitting off the needle and around your neck, you have to either make sense of the description (which is clear but intimidating) or get a magnifying glass to see exactly where the needles go in relation to the yarn in the small and distant illustration. (A macro lens for closeups would have been a nice touch throughout the book, but particularly here).Having said this from a real beginners point of view, the book appears to be an excellent resource for somewhat more confident knitters or knitters who want to expand beyond the basics. It has a section that shows swatches created using many types of stitches that, I'm sure, will come in handy someday. There is a lot of good information that I couldn't find elsewhere (such as get ready to start a new ball of yarn when you're getting close to having 4 times the length of yarn as the width of your project.)I gave it only 3 stars, not because it's a bad book--it's not--but because the content is not consistent with the implied level of the title and I find that misleading. This is not a book that gives you a great sense of security when you're starting out.If you haven't ever picked up a knitting needle, I would suggest Nici McNally's DVD The Complete Beginner's Guide to Knitting (also available at Amazon). That one IS for complete beginners, you see what you have to do and what it should look like when you do it (close up and slowly), and it tells you what mistakes you're likely to make when you're starting and how to prevent or correct them. It doesn't cover too much ground but it does cover what you need to know NOW.
I loved this full version so much that I bought the Quick Tips version for taking along with me when I'm on the go. The full sized book works for so many questions, techniques and definitions. This style just speaks to me in a way that works for the way I'm learning to knit, which is Continental. Not that many books really tell you both the English and Continental versions of the knit and purl stitch, but this book does. This book covers a lot of topics that I'd have to pay a lot of money to learn if I had to pay a person at my local yarn shop to teach me. AND the book is available 24 hours a day whenever I need it. I have several Teach Yourself Visually and Visual Quick Tip books and I'm very happy with them on a wide range of topics. You can't go wrong if you need more than just words sometimes to help you grasp a subject.
I am a beginner knitter and found this book to be helpful with the basics but I found it lacks trouble shooting for some of the basic mistakes.. One resource I am not able to locate is a step-by-step book (with pictures) or more preferably a DVD that demonstrate how to fix the most simplest mistakes a beginner makes. For instance, when a stitch would accidentally slip off while binding off or during a combination of knit & pearl in a project. Here is an opportunity for someone to create a DVD "Beginners Mishap's for Knitters". I am satisfied with this book for it does provide good references to many areas that a knitter will need to know. It explains in depth the differences of needles, yarn, many accessories, right & left handed knitting, providing examples with both. I would recommend it to others.
When I start any new hobby or project, I always research (a lot). I just try to hit the learning curve with avengence rather than flub around for years. I bought Nici McNally's DVD to actually learn to knit as lessons are not available in my area. I was super pleased with it as a way to get going and knit your first few projects. She even includes patterns and some finishing tips and instuction on fixing mistakes. You can get rolling with that alone. But then, I bought several knitting reference books. I think you will find, once you branch out from basics, you are going to come upon terms and instructions that leave you with the deer in the headlights look! Of all the books I purchased, this one is (in my opinon) the best reference. The diagrams are the most clear that I have seen. That's not to say I don't Google YouTube for a short video occasionally to see a technique, but the information is quite good. The book covers a lot of useful material, in addition to being colorful and inspiring. There may be a better book out there for you "go-to encyclopedia" but I haven't seen it (yet?) If I had to just keep one book for my knitting reference, it would definitely be this one. And by the way, one of the wonderful things is the section on modifiable patterns for hats and things. If you can't find the exact pattern you want and are brave, even as a beginner, you will find you can do a bit of your own original design work. I especially loved that section!
I knitted a lot when I was younger but then got busy with other projects and it had been quite awhile before I returned to this pass time. I had forgot a lot over the years and found this volume to be just the perfect refresher, even helped me correct a few of my old bad habits. I think this would be great for beginners as well. I like that it shows alternative methods, so if one doesn't work well for you another might be easier and more efficient. It is hard to show movement in still pictures so this might not be quiet as efficient as having someone demonstrate for you or watching a video on U-tube, but it is certainly the next best thing and covers a great deal of territory including not just the basics but information about tools and how to utilize them, how to read patterns, variations of stitches and knit patterns and yarn weights to form projects that are uniquely your own. Plus it even offers some simple patterns to get you started.

I had read a review that said to skip the 1.5 book if your kid did well or found the 1 easy. My daughter cruised through 1 so I went back and forth on whether or not to do 1.5 but decided it couldn't hurt. I'm glad I got it. It's a little different but not enough to make it a big leap or repetitive enough to make it boring or too easy. I like for my daughter to be successful and feel almost as if she can do it on her own, while giving her just enough challenge that she stays interested and keeps learning and progressing. So this book is perfect for us. -- as far as explode the code in general, I really love these books! The pictures could use improvement but my daughter 96% of the time can see what they are right off the bat and I never have a problem.
Perfect for my 5 year old. We home school and are working on phonics. We just completed explode the code book 1 and I decided to go with 1 1/2 instead of going into book 2. I’m glad I did. I recommend this book if your student did good in the first one but didn’t strongly grasp all of it. It’s review of the first book with some new concepts added. I don’t know I would probably still have chosen to do this one even if my child had whizzed through the first. It’s good practice and unless your child was bored with the first I would highly recommend.
I have been using Explode the Code books with my son for a little over a year now. I chose them because they seemed to get good reviews and many of the homeschoolers I follow online say they like these books. The books are all simple and straightforward. No need to plan ahead, just pick up and start working. The drawings are simple as well and not too distracting - although a couple times, it wasn't very clear to me what the drawings were indicating.Overall, though, they are very easy to use and my son doesn't argue about doing his work at all. I think, though, that the 1/2 issues are not really necessary for my son now, because he seems to get a little bored sometimes. I think this is just because we are reviewing content he has already mastered. So, if your child is doing well, skip the 1/2 issues and move ahead to the next full level book.
I've used Explode the Code for years wth students learning to read with phonics. The drawings are fun and the learning is sequential with multiple practices. The phonics skill is then practiced in comprehension exercises.
We love Explode The Code. My daughter just finished the first book but wasn't ready to go on to number 2. I love these half books for extra practice
Absolutely fantastic! Loved Explode the Code 1, and my daughter still needed a little more review. This book is perfect! LOVE!
It keeps the lessons fresh and allows for more practice. My only issue is that some of the pictures are very subjective to interpretation which throws the little one. That is my only complaint so far.
My child loved the quirky sentences and it was the perfect resource for cementing understanding of phonics.

This is my first audiobook and thus my first experience with the effect live narration has on text. I will say that every other David Sedaris essay I have read has been uproariously funny. I read both Holidays on Ice and Me Talk Pretty One Day.This book wasn't as funny. I enjoyed the honest and heartfelt coming out story of "I Like Guys". However, many of the essays were sad or even boring. I felt myself wishing the segment would be over so I could see if the next one would be funnier. I had no idea David's childhood had been so painful. I guess this just wasn't what I expected from the author of Holidays On Ice.I cannot gauge if I may have found it more entertaining to read than to listen to.
As always with a new book by David Sedaris, I can hardly wait to get it and I am never disappointed. Naked is wonderful. I always feel as if Mr. Sedaris (who I think of as David because I feel like I've known him all my life) can see straight into my brain and give me the gift of hours of pleasure knowing there is someone as wacky and obsessed with the funny bits of life as I am. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good sense of humor and a desire to see the both the frailty and grandness of the human condition. Definitely another laugh-out-loud journey through David's fabulous mind.
Not that our hero was diagnosed as autistic as a child. Sure, he licked light switches, observed strange daily rituals, and was OCD to the max. But back in the carefree 50's and 60's, people knew very little about childhood disabilities and (for the most part) cared even less.A kid who behaved in socially inappropriate ways was "weird." Unless his parents or teachers could beat the weirdness of him, he STAYED weird. And thus little David Sedaris continued to mystify and irritate the adults around him right up until he went off to college. Then he discovered the miracle of illegal drugs and, from that point on, no explanation for his weirdness was needed. Praise Jesus! It's a miracle!I discovered Sedaris two years ago and went through his books like shot through a goose. At first they seem like a confusing series of unrelated stories, which they ARE. But there's some method to the madness, although the madness always outweighs the method. It helps if you realize that his life divides into three sections: his childhood with his solidly middle-class, but horrifyingly dysfunctional family; his time as a rebellious and notably unsuccessful young man, alternating between unhappy stints at various colleges and stretches of menial jobs and close contact with people most of us would run miles to avoid; and finally his life as a writer and partner to the reassuringly normal Hugh.So there's an over-all chronological order, although he never makes any attempt to knit his stories into a coherent whole. That's YOUR job, reader. So roll up your sleeves and start reading. With two wildly mismatched parents and a cast of strange siblings, he was doomed from birth to either end up in a mental hospital or with some REALLY great material. Actually, he's been in a mental hospital, but as a teen-aged volunteer for two summers. What kid wants to spend his summers exploring the nuances of insanity? David Sedaris, that's who. What's my favorite? Tough to say. LOVED the saga of his teen-aged sister bringing home the raddled, but charmingly naive prostitute for Christmas. Know-it-all pater familias Lou Sedaris was determined for his offspring to start earning their keep at an early age. Nothing like the value of hard work and you meet such nice people employed at a cafeteria that hires parolees. These stories are sometimes horrifying and sometimes sad and frequently hilarious. Many of them are all three at the same time, much like life. If you're easily offended or have a cardiac condition that puts you at risk, better skip them. Otherwise, fasten your seat belt and enjoy.
Naked had been sitting on my shelf for at least a year before I decided to read it. I have a bad habit of not reading books after I buy them, so this should come as no surprise. As a memoir, Naked is an unbelievably good collection of autobiographical essays. As you make your way through Naked, you just find yourself in disbelief at Sedaris' dysfunctional family. Everyone out there claims to have some sort of dysfunctional family, but Sedaris' truly takes the cake. From the authors childhood filled with his nervous tics and OCD habits to his teachers visiting his home while being offered alcoholic beverages while watching his mother make mock impersonations of her son. It makes you really feel for the author. The best part of Naked by far is the Ya-Ya, Sedaris' grandmother. It makes me wish I had at least one grandmother just like her growing up. If you don't find yourself laughing out loud at least once, you don't have a sense of humor :). Then the authors tales as a long-time hitchhiker while doing a wide variety of manual labor jobs give readers like myself hope that haven't quite figured out who they are or what they want to do in life. On a personal level, these tales were really what I liked the most about Sedaris. The fact that he's come out of all of the hell and many years of uncertainty/wandering to become a successful author and playwright is truly inspiring. It just goes to show you anything is possible, even if it takes until much later in life to figure it out.My gripe with Naked comes as a "side-splitting" and "hilariously entertaining" memoir. For me, the humor started to die around the time Sedaris goes away to camp for a month. From that point on, the novel's comedic aspect drops off significantly. Granted, the novel definitely takes on a darker tone up until the last few chapters, but it was my expectation that it'd be funny for more than just half the book. In that regard, the reviews and descriptions of the book disappointed me.Overall, it's definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to be genuinely captivated by another persons trials and tribulations as well as how they overcame them. Just don't expect to be a comedy from start to finish. I wouldn't quite give it 4 stars, but more along the lines of 3.5 stars. As it's been out for about 14 years now, Naked is certainly a bargain for the price. So if you end up not liking it as much as you thought, it won't have burned a large hole in your wallet. :)-Travis S.
