Without the publication of this fascinating account of one man's arduous journey across a continent and through a forgotten country, the world would be worse off. The author weaves together historical accounts of the few who preceded him: Henry Stanley ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume."), Robert Conrad (Heart of Darkness), Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and Barbara Kingsolver (The Poisonwood Bible). This makes the book much more than just a travel report but also a bibliography as wide and as deep as the mighty Congo River.
This was a gripping story of a dangerous journey through almost unbelievably primitive conditions. Much of what he related about his encounters was almost unbelievable to read about in the 21st C. I've traveled to third world and developing world, and have seen the incongruity of people on oxcarts with cell-phones etc. as they progress unevenly--but progress they do! But there is none of that on his journey. No sign of the 21st C, and almost none of the 20th C remaining in the area he traveled through. It broke my heart to realize how the world has ignored and forgotten the suffering DRC people. Mr. Butcher is a very interesting writer, and I appreciated the regional history as well as the story of his own tribulations and perseverance (although at times I thought he was just plain crazy to continue!). I would have given this book a "5 star" but the end of the book just petered out, so the end was a bit of a disappointment. Nonetheless, highly recommended!
I just finished reading both this and Jeffrey Tayler's Facing the Congo: A Modern-Day Journey into the Heart of Darkness, which describes a similar journey. The two books are quite different in their approaches to the material, but they lend themselves to comparison, and on the whole, this book, Blood River, comes out ahead.The premise of this work is simple. The author, at the time the Africa corespondent for the Daily Telegraph, decides to retrace the journey of the most famous Daily Telegraph correspondent of a previous era: Henry Morton Stanley. He prepares for this trip for years, reading extensively about Stanley, the Congo, and Africa in general before starting his remarkable trip. After first flying to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, he the follows, using mostly modern conveyances, the route pioneered over a century before by Stanley. Throughout he compares his experiences with those of the prior explorer, and with the experiences of only a few decades ago, at the time of the Belgian colony. I was amazed to learn how developed the Congo had been prior to its independence. A modern joke, which does not feature in this book, but which applies completely goes as follows: a child asks his grandparent "what did you use for light before candles were invented?" and the grandparent replies "Electricity." The constant refrain of this book is the elderly, 70+ year old crowd, who remember clean water, good roads, good hospitals, the rule of law, and electric light, while their grandchildren work as subsistence farmers or mercenaries.Butcher writes as a journalist, and it shows. His ability to bring even a savage and dangerous "undeveloping" country to vivid, engrossing light is superb. His research before the trip shows as well, in his asides about flora, fauna, and the monuments he discovers. His point in making the trip was a deeper understanding of the country, and this is where the starkest contrast is seen between his work and Tayler's. Tayler states at the opening of his book that the journey was one of self discovery, and that book is much more inward focused and solipsistic. It is surprising then, that I feel the reader gets a better picture of Butcher than of Tayler, as we see his interest in, and concern for, the people he encounters. His closing paragraphs add a note of hope to an otherwise bleak look at the "broken heart of Africa". Which is a wonderfully coined phrase, by the way.The book is written in British English, with an occasional word I had to look up as an American reader. (I had never heard the term "tatty" before reading this). Occasionally he repeats himself, with some key phrases repeated more than once. Butcher describes Mobutu's "singlehanded" prevention of Congo's success on at least three occasions, using very similar wording. But these are relatively minor quibbles with an otherwise excellent work.Highly recommended.
Another Western journalist's account of his travels through a war-torn African country, this time, the Congo. For anyone who read and enjoyed King Leopold's Ghost, this book can almost serve as a sort of sequel. In it, Tim Butcher attempts to retrace Henry Morton Stanley's portentous journey through the Congo over a century before. A friend of the author ironically points out, it's probably more dangerous to trek across the Congolese bush now than it was in Stanley's day.So, I admit the book's premise may be a little bit gimmicky, but Tim Butcher's voice more than makes up for it. He's a great writer and a genuinely likable person. (For those of you who have watched the show Survivor Man, imagine a Les Stroud who reads.) I found him to be sincere and direct - equal parts compassionate and honest. And despite his incredible hubris in undertaking this mission, he's surprisingly gentle-spirited and not at all pretentious.And just when I would begin to categorize him as a sort of straight-forward, no-frills writer, he would sideswipe me with a beautifully written description of something or someone he found compelling in the Congo, like a rusted piece of Belgian railroad track overtaken by the bush, or the frenetic Congolese priest lamenting the absence of law and order, or the man who was willing to give his four-year-old child to a complete stranger to save him from the Congo. I definitely enjoyed this book enough to pick up his next one right away.
Part history, part travel book, part social commentary, this is a fascinating and often disturbing look at the Congo and the author's observations as he attempts to retrace the journey of explorer Henry Stanley in the late 19th century through the most rugged and hostile terrain imaginable. Fantastically written and full of keen observations, this is a wonderful account of a country that has been brutalized and exploited, one that seems to have been left behind by the modern world.

These two books take different approaches to the subject, but both celebrate the talents of individuals and the difficulty of weaving in the old ways. The Hopi basketmakers responded to the interest and patience of photographer Teiwes, the author of other books on Southwest tribes, with interviews and extensive demonstrations. Because many of the old methods and materials they use are dying out, this is a valuable document. Details of the flora used, dying methods, techniques for each kind of basket, and an appreciation of the design forms used are all included. Rounding out the book are 128 of the author's photographs, 16 color plates, and a map of the Hopi lands, as well as an excellent chapter on ancient weaving in the area. Bibby is curator of an exhibit of 62 baskets judged to be the finest of their kind in California. They date from 1822 to the present, with basketmakers identified for almost all these gems. This is a very informative book on Hopi basket weavers, starting with discussion of types of Hopi basket weaving. It contains many photographs of the weavers of the Second and Third Mesas and their works. Good addition to any American Indian basketry library.
Really nice book with lots interviews with the basket weavers. B/W photos. Dated, but still good info (1980s).
If you are looking for a great history book on Hopi baskets, this is the book. If you are looking for a "how to" book, this is not what you are looking for. It does state the technique used for various types of baskets, however doesn't tell you "how to" do those techniques. Beautiful photos, wonderful text, but not a "how to" book.

This book has beautiful pictures taken by the artist of Hopi basketry and the women who create it.It's a good source of information on the women of the Hopi tribe and their basketry. Before writing the book she spent a lot of time observing and interviewing these women, which makes her book more credible than if she had just researched or observed. The way she talks about the women feels personal, and her friendship and respect for them shows in the writing.I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the Hopi tribe or basket weaving in general. I also think that anyone who wishes to learn how to weave should read this to learn more about the cultural background of the art. However, even though Teiwes does talk about technique, it's not a how-to book.

This is not for the person who wants to learn how to do Hopi style baskets. This is a book for the intermediate to advanced basketweaver who wants to STUDY Hopi basket weaving. History of the traditions and the basketweavers abound and there is a plethora of photos. You can study this book for a long time before you need to move on to get more info. It's fascinating as well as a bit sad for the ancient art that is struggling to stay alive. (One example is that appparently no one grows the Hopi sunflowers anymore which was the source of natural black dye so now synthetic black dye has to be used.)I wish there were more color photos but I have no problem with the number of photos -- nice job there! If you've admired, bought or want to work in the Hopi style (with a basketweaving background already in place) then this book will be a valuable addition to your artist library.

About the Author
Tiago Antao Tiago Antao is a bioinformatician. He is currently studying the genomics of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, the main vector of malaria. Tiago was originally a computer scientist who crossed over to computational biology with an MSc in bioinformatics from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal. He holds a PhD in the spread of drug resistant malaria from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. Tiago is one of the coauthors of Biopython―a major bioinformatics package―written on Python. He has also developed Lositan, a Jython-based selection detection workbench. In his postdoctoral career, he has worked with human datasets at the University of Cambridge, UK, and with the mosquito whole genome sequence data at the University of Oxford, UK. He is currently working as a Sir Henry Wellcome fellow at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

One big drawback of the Python environment in this field is the paucity of textbooks beyond the most basic level. This book is an excellent bioinformatics cookbook and it covers a vast range of topics, ranging from next generation sequencing to population genetics and phylogenetics. However to take fully advantage of the book is highly recommended to have both a medium-high knowledge of python and some experience in bioinformatics. Each chapter provides python code to reproduce the analyses the author performs. Even though the author explains the code in details, the code often is not trivial and a certain experience with python is required. Similarly, a previous knowledge of bioinformatic technologies is desirable as the book often uses a terminology (such as fastq, bam, vcf, etc.) that won’t be familiar to those that haven’t any experience in bioinformatics.The book is well organized and structured. The first chapter helps the reader to set up a python environment through Anaconda or Docker. In the following chapter the author starts to talk about bioinformatics and the first topic he touches is NGS (next generation sequencing). I found this chapter very interesting as it shows how to deal efficiently with the usually huge fastq files and how to perform simple but useful analyses such as quality control of the sequencing reads by position. In the same chapter the author talks about the variant call format (VCF) and how to work with it through libraries such as pyVCF. The next chapter is dedicated to whole genome sequences in fasta format and to genome annotations in GFF/GTF formats. The following chapters are about population genetics and phylogenetics. Even though I’m not an expert of these fields and I was not aware of the formats used (such as genepop) I could enjoy the reading and the code was straightforward enough to be easily understandable. Then the author explains how to use PDB (the protein data bank) and the software PyMol. A very interesting (and in my opinion important) chapter is the last one where the author discusses how to deal efficiently with big genomics datasets. Here the authors talks about concurrency and ipython parallel computing, and shows how it is possible to speed up your python code by using libraries such as Cython and Numba.Overall the book is well written and organized and is a good cookbook for bioinformaticians.
I've been in computational biology for a long time, and I find this to be one of the most impressive practical and comprehensive books I've come across (and I go through a lot!) It provides an incredibly wide survey of different domains of computational biology (e.g., protein structure, genomics, and much more), combined with lots of good Python programming advice (e.g., use of IPython/Jupyter notebooks, provided by the author). And it's about as up to date as imaginable -- quite a tour de force!

What can I say. It's an O'Reilly book. The book is a good intro to JSON. You can find all of the same information online. If you are like me and on occasion like flipping through paper, this is worth the money.
Even if you know nothing about programming you will understand this book. It is extremely clear. It is an excellent book to begin learning JSON, JSON Schema, and beginning JSON security vulnerabilities and what to do about them. It was written in 2015 and therefore is more up-to-date than other books. It touches on other related technologies like AngularJS, Node, etc. JSON doesn't care about what language you write in - PHP, ASP.NET, HTML, etc.This book gives plain English examples, then progresses to simple JSON coding. It does not give a lot of extra examples to work through, but does show what to watch out for, and references to other resources. You can read this book in a day or two, perhaps in a few hours. It's only 112 pages including the index.If you want to know if what you are crafting is good JSON data, but don't need to understand the in-depth programming of JSON, then this is an especially good book.If you are a total beginner to programming, or don't know a lot of programming lingo, then this is a great book.If you already know some JSON, this book is NOT for you, go buy a different book.
This is exactly what I was looking for. A concise but fairly thorough treatment of JSON.I'm a (primarily) SQL developer but my organization is considering moving some of their data into Mongo. For me this was perfect; enough information to be able to do intelligent research.

Curt Dudley-Marling is a professor in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where he teaches courses in literacy and language arts.
