This book had illustrations of artifacts from Pompeii I had never seen in other books on the subject. I especially enjoyed the recreation of the homes in 3D and where they were located next to each other on the streets of the town. It was easy to visualize how it must've been before the eruption. This book is going to Pompeii with me next year and I will be using it as a guide.
This book was for our son who loves Roman History, however, we have not have been able to set aside sufficient time to read it through as well as examine the photos and paintings. As a homeschooler, we'd like to maybe one day, travel to Rome, Herculaneum, Oplontis,Pompeii and Stabiae.
I loved this book. I am interested in ancient civilizations, how they built their cities and how they lived. This book is beautifully illustrated to a very high details. I feel like I have lived in Pompeii. I bought this book along with "City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction". They were both more than what I have expected.
Bought it for a gift. Pictures bring it to life and the story and history are lengthy enough for the price.

I own a lot of books on the subject and a lot of them are mainly text with a few pictures of actual objects here and there, so when I decided to build a miniature scale of an ancient roman home I knew I needed more visuals and especially reconstruction images. This book is perfect for that. It has basic descriptions on what, where and how for people looking to understand the basics on ancient roman life and lots of great drawings to illustrate the different sections.I recommend this book for children and adults alike since it is well organized, easy to understand and the visuals will help anyone get interested in the subject or add to an already knowledgeable audience.

I was disappointed with this book. First of all, it is 95% focused on coffee rather than caffeine in general, only lightly touches on tea or other sources of caffeine. It was a difficult read, the context and organization has room for much improvement. Returned immediately
Dangerous of CaffeineThis book is straight to the point. I have never been a fan of caffeine, this book helped reaffirm that dislike. I won’t sway anyone in this review, no need. This book will show you the true depths of the hole caffeine creates in you as a person. Get facts, correct knowledge, and a history that most don’t even know about this drug, and yes I mean drug. This book won’t convince you to get off the caffeine train; it simply gives you the information to convince yourself.
This book is medium (ha coffee humor), there is nothing funny about the problems caffeine can cause so this book is a must for those who recognize their problem, curious or just in denial. One would be surprised what other products have caffeine or just too much caffeine.
Great information about coffee. I had no idea that it caused all the problems that it causes. The vitamins and minerals that it pulls from your body. Wow! very good knowledge and very well written. I find the melatonin right on. My husband has issues with sleeping and he drinks a lot of coffee. I am going to ask him to read this book. And nobody wants to age quicker. Very good read.
The author painted a great picture about the effects caffeine has on the body. I didn't realize how many foods and drinks out there use caffeine. Although I'm a huge coffee drinker, I think I might cut back some. Maybe use some decaf coffee.
Fascinating read on the dangers and risks of the overuse of caffeine. I personally developed a "panic attack" after drinking too much coffee way back in the mid 1980's and as a result chose to had stop drinking coffee and any beverage with caffeine in it. I am not sure whether or not caffeine was being added to foods where you least expected it back in the day. For a period of 18 months thereafter I totally abstained. When I started law school at night while I was working full time and drive 120 miles a day, I had to go back to drinking caffeine as I could not maintain sufficient focus in the night classes without it. Now I drink maybe two cups a day and then some iced tea. I think that's where the difficult thing comes in when living in the modern world, yes too much caffeine can be harmful to one's health, but with all the demands on our time it's hard to stay focused for the time needed to do what we need to do with all the demands on our time. The good thing about the book is that it makes one think of the risks one may be taking with one's health, explains how much is too much at least at the high ends of usage patterns the book even has some suggestions about how to stop using caffeine all together. Whether or not you chose to give up caffeine is up to you, but I beleive we should have knowledge of what the risks are and suggestions on how to get off caffeine if one so chooses.
I'd like to keep clear on the difference between the value of the author's message and on whether this is a good book. Yes, I appreciate what the author has to say. As a recovering caffein addict (only a few cups a day, but it was ruining my life), I was thankful for the affinity she provided and confirmation that caffeine can affect some people severely, even if less so for others.But as a book it was a challenging read to stick with and after finishing it I was disatisfied. It's scope is laudable, trying to catalag a variety of negative effects and reference related studies. As a result its main utility may be for people to draw a connection they had not realized before between their personal maladies and their caffeine consumption. And this would especially be the case for doctors, who may be entirely ignoring caffeine as the source of serious health issues such as nerve or heart problems. The author relates a number of misdiagnosises in this area.The biggest problem is that the book suffers from weak logic in many arguments it is making. Unfortunately, at this time most studies cannot yet link caffeine as a direct CAUSE of problems, only a correlation. That's a real challenge for any author who is trying to sound an alarm about that, because it is not possible to be definitive in your arguments. Rather than outright acknowledge that, the author sometimes reverts to cheap statements like this snippet from page 58 ("What is caffeine?"), "As with cocaine, heroin, and morphine, caffeine is white."I did appreciate the call out about how caffeine is in so many products. There are striking similarities between its use and how cigarette makers spike tabacco with audictive enhancers, but it was surprising this book did not pursue that much. The fact that we and our youth are being fed a constant stream of this subversive drug is perhaps where the real call to arms should come from. I hope one day someone can pick up on that and make some change. This book might inspire that.
I found this useful and enjoyed it. Lots of references. The knowledge gained has helped me with my coffee addiction.

Singer, a philosopher, bioethicist, professor, and author of 16 books, is best known for the "animal liberation" movement, which deals with the ethics of our treatment of animals. He also is the grandson of David Oppenheim, a Jew and a classical scholar who lived in Vienna and died in Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1942. Oppenheim's wife, Amalie, survived the Holocaust and moved to Australia in 1946. Singer found many letters and intimate personal papers in an aunt's home in Australia and in the State Archives of Austria. They included more than 100 letters that Singer's grandparents wrote to his parents and to his mother's sister after they left for Australia in 1938. Singer describes how his grandfather became a friend of Sigmund Freud and how they discussed theories of psychology. Oppenheim later parted with Freud, following instead the first of the great heretics of psychoanalysis, Alfred Adler. Singer's book is an exceptional eulogy to his grandfather. Fascinating view of the intellectual world 100 years ago from one of today's intellectuals.
Excellent book if you are interested in the Jewish population before and during the war years in Austria. I found it great as this is where my grandparents were at that particular time. This particular issue hd smallish print. I would have prefered larger print as it is easier on the eye to read.
As my kind of book this was definitely hard to put down
I expected to learn about Jewish life in Vienna before World War II and to understand through the lives of a particular family the vicious and murderous German Nazi destruction of that vibrant community.However the author spends about half of the book discussing his grandparents sex attitudes which maybe belongs in a psychoanalysis book but not in this one.There were some interesting things to learn in the latter half such as the fact that his grandfather was so far removed from his Jewish identity that he refused to even circumcise his newborn son. And eventhough he was so far removed from his Jewish roots, it didn't help save him from the Nazis.

This book is essentially a biography of Singer's maternal grandparents; his grandfather died in a Nazi concentration camp, while his grandmother survived.The book works best as a love story. The relationship between David Oppenheimer and Amalie Pollak began quite oddly: with David's letters about his homosexual interest in another young man. As David refocused his interests on Amalie, another obstacle asserted herself: Amalie was an observant Jew, while David was an atheist or agnostic. (They ultimately negotiated away this problem by having kosher plates for Amalie and nonkosher ones for David).And yet the two had a happy marriage; how did they manage it? Singer does not think that there was romantic love between the two, at least not at first. Instead, David at first sought Amalie's wisdom, and the relationship grew from there. Singer writes: "if admiration of intellect and character comes first, love can follow, and passion too." (Singer seems to focus more on why David was attracted to Amalie than vice versa, perhaps because David left more of a paper trail).Along the way, Singer tells us a bit about early 19th century Vienna: a society where Jews could rise to the top of any profession, but also a society where the longtime mayor campaigned as an open anti-Semite. One bizarre example of the society's anti-Semitism was the Jewish-by-birth (though Christian by religion) author Otto Weinberger, who asserted that women were naturally amoral, and that Jews were naturally feminine and thus amoral as well. Weinberger put his principles into action by shooting himself.Singer also describes his grandfather's philosophical thought; however, I have to admit I often found this discussion a bit harder to follow.

I would recommend this book for anyone with a sense of humor, anyone thinking about visiting or moving overseas... especially as a single person. Actually, generally everyone who isn't a prude would do well to spend a few hours with this book.

This book is "as described and advertised". It's a very good trip report, and this mans first solo trip to Bangkok. Great details about what he found and how everything went. Fast paced and fun to read. He had an excellent well rounded adventure, combining bar girl dates with internet dating. Lots of in depth planning and great trip report.
Fortunately, I'm a woman who's seen a bit of fun in my life (NYC in the 1970's!!) -- and I definitely have a terrific sense of humor! No judgment or hypocritical prudery here....Go for it while you can, dude!!
