I love the original series & books of the X Files. But try as I could I couldn't get into the extreme bleakness of Wolf's world. I'm at 2156 words of 7680 words or 28% and between the sadist cop & strangely coy psychiatrist I just can't read anymore. I could if there were clues sprinkled within the pages I've read but other then dreams of monsters, loud horrible unearthly sounds keeping the inmates up all night as well as the neighbors of Wolf's apartment & him thinking he was seeing through the eyes of a monster there just isn't an incentive to keep reading this dark, disturbing plot.I got the book due to the preview sounded just like the books I really enjoy reading. I am not sure why the author felt this long drawn out tale was necessary before getting to the meat of the plot.If you have patience please take a chance on what could turn out to be a good book. I however have lost my patience & sadly will never know if it was worth it or not.

This was an absolute treat to read. Great characters, a very good story, extremely well developed and conceived, this is a book to be enjoyed. The author took time to very skilfully craft what has to be on of the better mystery/thriller novels of recent times. Furthermore, great care was taken in editing so that there is nothing to distract the reader from enjoying this book.A recommendation without reservations, a must read. And make sure you have time enough, it is a page turner and you will not want to put it down once you start it.

Posted "privately" as Paul from Maine (and Florida) who recently wrote to Mark's E-Mail to congratulate a fellow Mainer on such a great work of fiction (and a lot of fact) in his Three book "Blue Light" series, starting with the really excellent Apocalypse Island. Set in Maine by a Maine writer, this gives accurate local color to a work that is not easily categorized as horror, thriller, police drama, or sci-fi. It is all of these and more. This book especially (and the series) is not easily reviewed by the standard platitudes. This former singer, songwriter, and musician with a well known and well traveled Maine band started writing by composing over a hundred original songs for the band and somewhere along the line transferred from songwriter to a professional author. Make no mistake, Mark Hall is a pro and knows his trade. He can realistically be compared to another Maine writer who became semi-famous with the "Rock Bottom Remainders" along with writing quite a few successful tales, many of which are also set in Maine, but frequently travel the world and occasionally well beyond it. Really. It would not surprise me to see Apocalypse Island show up as a movie some day, not only great writing but more importantly in a film: original, thrilling and fast paced. Though, as usual, the book will surely be considered better. Just the fact that he has, to this point, written over 20 novels that have been published and well reviewed by thousands of fans should allow a discerning reader to obtain this premier example of his work with confidence of a wild ride that's too soon over. Highly recommended by a voracious reader who can only hope that that this review does some justice to this talented author, this great book and the "Blue Light" series.

Danny Wolf was raised in an orphanage on Apocalypse Island until it burned down, when he was shunted off to various foster homes. Now he's grown up with no memories of his childhood. What could have happened to him on that island?! Does it have some connection to the people around him dying? What should be a suspense story gets bogged down by chapters of people lost in their own thoughts. The whole tempo of the book is gone. There's a mystery involved, but no suspense. It's of if you like long, meandering stories that don't get to the point.

Portland, Maine. Daniel “Danny” Wolf (gifted musician, alcoholic) was out on a wilderness trail when he came upon a ½ naked bludgeoned woman with a bloody carved cross on her torso. It was Amy Salinger (groupie). Was it only a dream?Danny & Siri Donovan (Danny’s GF) were in a bar having a few drinks & he got into a confrontation with Shaun Talbot which the 2 of them thought didn’t amount to much.Detective Frank Cavanaugh came to see Danny & informed him Shaun had been murdered.Danny of course was convicted & sent to Warren State Prison (Maine).CO Kaleigh Jarvis (f, Prison Guard) took a motherly approach to Danny boy.Warden Sarkey, brought Dr. Hardwick (60+, psychiatrist) into Danny’s cell to talk to him about his dreams & anger issues. After 5 yrs. the good Dr. got him released with certain stipulations of course. On Sparrow St. he found an apartment. He joined up with Bad Medicine a rock band.Danny was seeing Dr. Hardwick on regular therapy sessions.Danny’s horrible nightly dreams were not going away. His apartment neighbors Mr. Tripp (elderly) & Mrs. Rosenberg (elderly) were complaining.Persephone “Seph” Wilder (f, Portland Examiner newspaper reporter) had front page headlines read there was a ½ naked dead female found in Oak Hill Cemetery tied to a tombstone with a cross on it.Officer Myers (Jewish, Portland PD), Lieutenant Rick Jennings (Portland PD), & Detective Cavanaugh (Portland PD) had arrived at the crime scene. The deceased was Janet Owen (Amy’s BFF, groupie).Lieutenant Jennings did question Danny (35).Lieutenant Jennings (Laura’s Uncle) & Detective Laura Higgins (26, Jack’s daughter) were talking it seems on paper Siri Donovan never existed. What else did they discuss in detail.Chief James “Red” Robeson (60+, Portland PD) was looking at all the photos of the murdered victims.Bad Medicine was playing at the Cavern Club.Does Bishop Patrick Byrne (Portland Catholic Archdiocese) know something? What happened to Detective Cavanaugh?Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content or profanity &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written psychological thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great psychological thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Amazon Digital Services LLC; bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
