Great YA story about a summer in Small town Kentucky, A young transplant from Coal Country has lost his Miner father in an accident. Forced by his mother to move away from all he knows, he has no friends. His mother gets him a job as a yardboy and handyman with the town's "rich, crazy old witch." And her "Secretary" points out the padlocked Basement door and tells him "Never, never go down there!" Weeks go by and he begins ot fit in, make some friends and the "Rich, crazy old Witch" befriends him and starts telling him about her life as a young girl in the town.

A wonderful story of loss, mystery and renewal. The author captured a young boy's emotions perfectly, and the portrayal of his friendship with an old woman was beautiful. Highly recommended!

Tender story of a teenage boy and an eccentric old matron developing a relationship that grows and improves over the short time they share. Book mixes in a little mystery, some spooky moments and a bit of a twist at the close, but I think I'll remember it best for its' heartfelt passages like "As time passes, everything we know and love becomes increasingly brittle" and "Every day of our lives we are faced with decisions to make, doorways to walk through." Once again author has a knack for delivering both great characters and good story lines as in "Chips of Red Paint" and hoping he continues to write more books in the future!

Like K. Martin Beckner's "Chips of Red Paint," we are treated with similarly rich characters in the novel who offer both depth and personality. There are similar minor but distracting grammatical errors throughout, like the author's first book. I found this story less personable than the author's first, likely because Ethan's story is told in a third person narrative. But, the novel was overall a quick and enjoyable read. I value the community portrayed in "A Million Doorways" (told in around the same time period as "Chips of Red Paint") and the memorable people in the story, who were lifelike, wise, and compelling. I also enjoyed that, as promised at the end of K. Martin Beckner book before this, we get to learn about Zelma Green's mysterious past.

This is a wonderful coming of age story with a bit of a Victorian gothic twist. Having grown up in the south (Mississippi) and moving away from childhood friends to a new town when I was very little older than Ethan, the story rang so very true for me. I too spent the early seventies trying to reconstruct my life. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages, but especially for teens struggling to find a place in the world. Very well done.

I enjoyed A Million Doorways a lot. I like Mr. Beckner's style of writing; it keeps going and doesn't slow down. I had also read his book, Chips of Red Paint. The only thing I didn't like about A Million Doorways is that 13-year-old Ethan seemed too wise for his age. I can't imagine anyone that age being so mature. He talked like an "old" man.

Kentucky at its best. Beautiful interesting story. I couldn't put this book down! Read myself half blind. It's that good. Also, I was surprised that a guy could write with so much love. Beautiful, beautiful words of wisdom! Thank you for such a wonderful, special story!

A wonderful cast of characters, richly developed and captivating . A multifaceted story rich in legend, the south, and the human experience. From start to finish, I was swept along on a ride with this 13 year old boy and his colorful friends and family. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
