From the Back Cover

“Go Set a Watchman is such an important book, perhaps the most important novel on race to come out of the white South in decades.”—Clay Risen, New York TimesMaycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch—“Scout”—returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past—a journey that can only be guided by one’s own conscience.Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor, and effortless precision—a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context, and new meaning to an American classic.“Harper Lee’s second novel sheds more light on our world than its predecessor did.”—Time“Provides valuable insight into the generous, complex mind of one of America’s most important authors.”—USA Today

First things first: 'Watchman' is NOT a sequel to 'To Kill a Mockingbird'; it is an early draft of the classic novel. The events in 'Watchman' post-date those in 'Mockingbird' but, as stated, that was simply the period in Lee's original version. It is important to understand that this newly-released book is a preliminary version of the classic, not a subsequent or totally different novel.Okay, now that we understand each other, how is 'Watchman'? It's...okay. There are critical differences that I won't go into in order not to spoil the plot. Here's what I can tell you (and I am assuming you are familiar with 'Mockingbird'): The time period is mid-50's. Scout is 26, lives in New York City, and returns to Maycomb for a two week visit. The book is told in a series of anecdotes in the present day and in flashbacks to Scout's childhood. Scout is called by her proper name, Jean Louise, for the majority of the book. Dill is overseas and is only seen in a few flashbacks. Jem is also not on the present scene, although he figures more significantly in flashbacks. Miss Maudie is mentioned but doesn't play a major role. There is no mention whatsoever of any of the Radleys. A principal "new" figure is Hank Clinton, an orphan of Jem's age that was taken under Atticus' wing, became a lawyer and Atticus' partner, and is determined to marry Jean Louise and have her return to Maycomb. What's happening in Maycomb is that the NAACP is becoming prominent, and 'the Negroes' are demanding civil rights following the US Supreme Court's decision to integrate public schools. Jean Louise is disgusted to learn of Maycomb's opposition to these developments and is horrified by a town council meeting attended by Hank and Atticus where blatant racism, intolerance, stereotypes and segregation are advanced. She dismisses Hank as a would-be fiancé. Her image of Atticus, the hero of 'Mockingbird' and a universal symbol of justice, tolerance and equality, is shattered. Having based her own value system on Atticus, Jean Louise is infuriated and feels she is identity-less as a result of this surprising betrayal. These developments would be startling and extremely disappointing if 'Watchman' was in fact a sequel to 'Mockingbird'. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief because Lee ultimately chose to portray Atticus in the manner that she did. Reading the earlier version is interesting to see how she came around to the end result. In this respect, 'Watchman' is important as a resource to show countervailing concerns at play when Lee was writing, and is good enough cause to read it. (As a side note, there are striking comparisons to some of the more moderate Maycomb council theories and those of modern-day Confederate flag supporters. Take note, English Lit teachers!)Does the book stand on its own? In a word, no. It's boring. 'Mockingbird' is charming and funny, the characters are endearing, there's a fair amount of action, the dialogue is brilliant. Not the case in the earlier draft. There is relatively little action. For the most part, the "action" takes place in the flashbacks, none of which are even close to the stories in the eventual classic. The book is not funny. Jean Louise is appealing but she's by no means the adorable, irreverent Scout. Hank Clinton is a caricature that was wisely deleted. Atticus is an old, decrepit shadow of himself whose opinions will upset most readers. Dill is AWOL, the Radley angle is sorely missed. Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack are overly present but are supremely tedious. A major difference between this draft and the later one is that pages and pages are given over to speeches. Practically all the dialogue is delivered from a pulpit or a soap box. Lee had a lot to say, and eventually got it right, but in this version the overlong speeches get boring, quickly. There is some great writing, and many passages from the draft made it into the final cut. Lee obviously benefitted from some intelligent and caring editors as she finished the novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is an all-time classic that everyone should read. Go Set A Watchman is an interesting tool that helps show how Lee developed the characters, setting, storyline and message of the novel. It is valuable in that respect, and is worth reading, but does not hold its own as an independent novel, because that's not what it is.

If "Go Set a Watchman" had been published before "To Kill a Mockingbird," it would have been meaningless. Tom Robinson's trial would be just a vague incident in the Jean Louise's memory instead of a culturally iconic scene. Atticus Finch would be his daughter's fallen hero, but not ours. If "Watchman" had been first, we would only know Atticus as a segregationist and we wouldn't care: he wouldn't have been an ethical role model and a hero. There would be references to Atticus's past and why Jean Louise's world is shaken when she finds out he is a segregationist, but we would not share them. Now, though, Jean Louise's (who I keep referring to as "Scout" out of habit) feelings of betrayal are our own, as we can see by the collective Internet outrage. That's why "Watchman" works; that's why I have to give it four stars. "Watchman" is about fallen idols and disillusionment. Jean Louise tries to reconcile how moral paragon Atticus Finch could be racist, and that's what the readers have been trying to reconcile, as well. The press release for "Watchman" said, "[Jean Louise Finch] is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father's attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood," which gave us a hint that the Atticus we knew--the infallible anti-racist crusader--would not be that way in "Watchman." The talk about "Watchman" tarnishing Lee's legacy contributed to that idea. Still, I dismissed this possibility until it was confirmed, and even then, I was in denial. When Scout finds out Atticus is attending segregationist citizens' council meetings, she thinks "[He was] pulling something, [he was] there merely to keep an eye on things," a thought that I hopefully and childishly had, as well. But the most painful thing is that this Atticus is still recognizably, unquestionably Atticus Finch. Some speculated that this first draft Atticus would be different enough as a character (beyond the obvious) that we could easily dismiss him as Not Atticus and the book as Not Canon. He is still a loving father, a good neighbor, endlessly reasonable, thoughtful, articulate, patient, wry, giving. Still, his portrayal in "Watchman" makes me uneasy. JK Rowling could, conceivably, write a Harry Potter sequel set twenty, thirty years in the future, where Harry, an Auror, gleefully casts the Cruciatus Curse against suspected magical wrong-doers on a regular basis. Could she explain how he became this way as he grew older while making it consistent with his character from the first seven books? I think so, but I wouldn't want to read that.On the bright side, Jean Louise Finch serves as a moral compass. Atticus taught her well. She challenges beliefs that she knows are wrong. Of course, by today's standards, some of the things she says are cringeworthy, but the point is, she is now the progressive heroine. She is not perfect, but she has potential to be better than her father and her hometown. We have hope that she will pick up where Atticus failed. She is also recognizably Scout Finch, the outspoken, precocious tomboy, but now she is twenty-six and still out of place in Maycomb. Jean Louise has been living in New York City, which contributes to the jarringness of her visit. She can't relate to the women of her town, their interests, or their views on race. And, of course, Aunt Alexandra is still on her case about her behavior and appearance.Other familiar faces include Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jack (who takes a much more prominent role), and Calpurnia. Scout mentions that she still keeps in touch with Dill, who is exploring Italy, last she checked. Next to Atticus, the most disappointing news is that Jem died before "Watchman" begins.Henry Clinton is an important new character. He has been close to the Finches since, well, after the events of "Mockingbird." He became Atticus's protege after Jem died. Jean Louise has a serious relationship with him at the beginning of the novel, but, like Atticus, he attends those awful citizens' council meetings, and her view of him is shaken.I wanted to hate this book, and I wanted to be angry at it. The controversy surrounding its release would be enough: the story behind its publication is shady, almost certainly achieved through underhanded means, and even buying the novel was a moral quandary. Unfortunately, the book is good, and its message--however painfully it hits--is important: heroes can fall and they should. Not only that, but it forces us to look at our own values and behaviors. Atticus Finch was a huge relief: a person, albeit fictional, that we could look up to. He embodied everything an ethical person should aspire to (at least, the memetic version of him did). Atticus became a literary saint. However, even "Mockingbird" shows cracks in the statue we've erected of Atticus Finch. He has always taken a paternalist stance towards black people, but the focus of "Mockingbird" was his fight for justice. His moving courtroom scene, his progressive parenting, and his countless other noble deeds overshadow small things like making Calpurnia enter through the back door. But this indicates that his conception of justice and equality is limited--not as limited as the rest of Maycomb, of course, but still limited--and that becomes the focal point of "Watchman." The hardest truth of "Watchman" is not that Atticus changed. It is that he was always like this. The question that Jean Louise/Scout and the readers have to answer is, What are we going to do to be better?

Sandzen (1871-1954) is a rarity in American art--a Swedish-born modernist trained in Stockholm and Paris, who settled in Kansas and applied a postimpressionist style to prairie scenes, dramatic Rockies mountainscapes and the mystery of southwestern canyons. In an admiring biography illustrated with 49 color plates and 26 black-and-whites, the late Lindquist, former president of Wichita State University, examines Sandzen's deep love of nature, his experiments with pointillism, his travels through Mexico and the American Southwest and his synthesis of such influences as Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh and the fauves into a style marked by high-key colorism and a strong structural sense. Also presented are Sandzen's lithographs and woodcuts that echo the calligraphic manipulation of form seen in his oils. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Beautiful book with many color & b/w illustrations of paintings and prints which clearly displays Sandzen's mastery of both mediums! Swedish born and trained Sandzen was one of America's leading post-impressionists and the only one of whom I know whose landscape subjects are entirely Western. A great buy!

Good book

love this book, what an inspiration

I have done several studies of Birger Sandzen's work, this book helps in understanding him. Perhaps I will do some more now that I have new reference material.

Birger Sandzén (1871-1954) is widely regarded as the preeminent artist in the history of the state of Kansas. Born and educated in Sweden, he emigrated to America in 1894 to accept a teaching position at Bethany College in Lindsborg. He taught there for over 50 years, and remained in Lindsborg until his death. He had a profound impact on the development of the arts in Kansas, yet his influence spread far beyond the borders of the state. He produced a prodigious output of paintings and prints which were exhibited both nationally and internationally.Despite its subtitle, this volume is not a biography in the traditional sense. It is a retrospective tribute in which biography plays a small part. The events and accomplishments of Sandzén's life are not related chronologically, but rather organized thematically into a series of essays. The first three chapters are biographical in nature, but successive chapters focus on individual aspects of his career such as teaching method, travel, family and friends, painting technique, printmaking, critical response to his work, and the establishment of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery at Bethany College. In the treatment of his subject, author Emory Lindquist is relentlessly laudatory. He has not come to bury Sandzén, but to praise him. From reading this book one would suspect that Sandzén never committed a sin, no one ever had anything bad to say about him, and the only hardship he ever faced was death itself. Two mind-numbing chapters of excerpts from exhibition reviews cite heaps worth of adulation, garnished with less than a handful of sentences even remotely critical of the artist's work.Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book in spite of its lack of objectivity. What Lindquist does well is capture Sandzén's infectious excitement and enthusiasm for art and education. Despite isolating himself in a remote outpost on the prairies, Sandzén managed to execute works of art that rivaled those produced in the great art centers of the world and earned the respect of critics worldwide. Though he devoted himself to interpreting the landscapes of Kansas, the Rocky Mountains, and the Southwest, he never became an American regionalist painter. He built his own individual style upon a tripod of Nordic traditions, French impressionism, and German expressionism. Sandzén brought high artistic and intellectual standards to a small town in central Kansas, and with the help of friends and colleagues established at Lindsborg his own little Parnassus on the Plains. This volume is heavily illustrated with both historical photos of the artist and pictures of his work. To those unfamiliar with Sandzén's art, his painting style could best be described as a combination of Van Gogh with a fatter brush and Monet on steroids. No printed page could ever do justice to Sandzén's brilliant colors, but the 49 color plates included here succeed admirably. The 26 black and white figures reproduce his prints and drawings absolutely beautifully. In addition to presenting a lovely gallery of the artist's work, this book is the most authoritative resource we have on Sandzén and his inspiring accomplishments as an artist and educator. For that, it is a book to be respected and treasured.

If you have been a Sandzen fan for a while, this book with its juicy color photos is what everyone has been craving. COLOR, COLOR, COLOR....every artist should have a look at just a few pages to get an idea of what it means to paint in color,...or with color. The artists palette is usually a unique handeling of color and Sandzen's pinks, oranges, greens and yellows are hypnotizing. If you are interested in Sandzen's printmaking, see my other review on his graphic works, but if you are looking for a very nice life overview of an under-rated artist,..give it a go!!!

In the July issue of 2010 Southwest Art magazine, a small article appeared indicating the Palm Springs Art Museum (CA) was hosting a Birger Sandzen exhibit through Sept. 12, 2010. The illustrated biography (most likely paper back) is available for $42.00. Please forgive me, Amazon, for pointing this out to interested folks but the $265 for a new hard back is a steep price to pay in these economic times.

He would have wanted to be remembered most as a teacher and friend; he was that and more to those that were fortunate enough to have known him. Such was the life of the great Swedish artist Birger Sandzen. In a glowing tribute to the man and his work, Emory Lindquist has managed to capture the essence of who he was and what he has meant to Kansas art. An absolutely beautiful account of his art and influence. Sandzen was a one of a kind visionary of the beauty that surrounds us in everyday life and nature. A first rate work by a learned historian, and obvious devotee, of Sandzen.

This book is a nice read that is easy to finish. Micheal Moran will travel for you to take you places where you'll most likely never go yourself.

OBSERVATIONS:- Covers the brief German colonialist period- Investigates issues of poverty, cultural dislocation and crime (the "raskols")- Not so much on cannibalism per se, but it is disconcerting to read how relatively frequently uppity missionaries were eaten!- The Manus Island dances give new meaning to the term "Members Only"PROS- Well-researched- Multiple sets of great photos- Stories of adventurous missionaries and misfits such as Count D'Albertis, the Cambridge Seven, Bronislaw Malinowski, Baron Miklouho-Maclay and of course Errol Flynn- Good exploration of cultural concepts and artifacts such as malagan masks, tubuans, dukduks etc.- Best book chapter is the Essay on Kwato Island - very poignant, poetic and melancholyCONThe balance of memoir, travelogue, history and essay is good but not as good as other travel writers such as Robert D. Kaplan or Bruce Chatwin. Moran has all the right ingredients, but the proportions need tweaking.Great line: "once the tropics infects your blood, it enslaves you like a terminal illness"

This was a satisfying, informative, entertaining and thought provoking read. Having lived in New Zealand and Australia most of my adult life, I have never paddled up to the Coral Sea. I have been to other parts of Polynesia and Melanesia but what is described in this book is a series of cultures different from what I have encountered. Part history, biography and travel story it works on all those levels. It is clear on the legacy of European colonisation and the missionairies role in subverting existing beliefs and traditional tribal structures. Unsuprising many Europeans came to a bad end without quite realising why. The dangerous currents then are still in force today and Mr Moran encounters some of them in his travels. Yet what emerges is the richness of differences, even in short distances-these can often be baffling when on the surface there may be a sameness about the environment, the people and what they appera to do and beleive in. It is a book I shall long treasure.

Australian travel writer Michael Moran boned up, so to speak, before his leisurely sweep through the cannibal islands. The cannibals are mostly Christians now, of somewhat puritanical bent, but not so strait-laced that they do not tease tourists about who's for dinner.Nevertheless, this is more ambitious than the usual drool of travelogues, and consequently somewhat disappointing in that it shoots high but hits low too often.Moran has lived in Poland and knows Polish and German, useful because he wants to explore the present in the context of the recent past -- the colonial era of Germany, Russia, Japan and Australia. Polish comes in because Poles did, especially the anthropologists Bronislaw Malinowski and the Russian Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay, who introduced the concept of living at length among one's subjects. Moran has unlimited admiration for him.For the missionaries, his feelings are mixed, as they should be.Having packed his boxes of 19th century books, Moran then visits Port Moresby, in 2000 and still one of most dangerous places. Moran explains he will not visit the Highlands, even more dangerous, and he is glad to get out of Moresby for the eastern or island provinces: Massim, New Ireland, New Britain, Buka, (very briefly) Bougainville, the Trobriands. It was hot.Moran tries, not too successfully, to keep three balls in the air: flashbacks to the early years of white contact, meetings with Melanesians, meetings with `expatriates.'The theme of the book becomes, "the beautiful children of Melanesia." These are contrasted with the fierce (but usually amiable once introduced) older men and the sullen, resentful young ones. These, in turn, are contrasted with expats, who are either like Moran or, more often, western rejects, drunks, liars, con artists. It's all a little too pat and somewhat skimpy on the Melanesians. The attempt to analyze Papua New Guinea politics is interesting and may even, who knows?, be fairly accurate. That trying to impose parliamentary democracy on the sons of headhunters, people so poor that even the chiefs buy cigarettes one at a time, was a mistake seems obvious. But parliamentary democracy has failed in places with much stronger claims to be part of the modern world than Melanesia.Melanesia is a violent place these days. But it always was. Whether it is more violent is a question Moran does not ask."Beyond the Coral Sea" is beautifully written; no other contemporary travel writer I know is in the same league. (I would have to go back more than half a century to Vincent Cronin's "The Golden Honeycomb" to find its equal.)

An informative and at times entertaining read about Papua New Guinea and it's surrounding islands. The author interweaves his story of travel with the history of various explorers, missionaries, and local personages. He describes the various impacts modernization has had on the islands and discusses the effects missionaries, colonization, and the world wars have wrought. The book provides good insight to places rarely written about and the author colorfully describes various festivals, arts, and customs. I enjoyed the book although at times it slowed and a sense of sanctimony occasionally pervades the work. The book whetted my appetite to learn more about the region's history and art and an extensive bibliography is provided.

As a traveller who has spent a total of about 18 months in and around the island regions of Papua New Guinea, I found this book to be just what I look for before and during a trip to any area. Moran's trip illustrated exactly what a traveller will experience while in the country and also gives the historical background so that time is not wasted trying to discover how a culture or area has come to be what it is.While looking over the harbor of Rabaul and seeing the Duke of York Islands and the southern end of New Ireland, I felt as though I could feel the history taking place. Even Moran's encounters with modern day expatriots in airports and towns ring so true to my experiences that I felt he was writing about my trip without me knowing it.It is my goal to gain this insight for every country I visit but it is hardly realized. This book fulfilled that goal for Papua New Guinea and raised the bar for my travel reading in the future.

I read Mr Conaway's first Napa book years ago, and in general I found it to be a fairly interesting read. When I saw that a third volume in the series was available I eagerly downloaded the Kindle version. A lot of things have changed in Napa since volume 2 in the series was published in 2003, and most of those changes have not really been for the better. What I was hoping for was a book that would talk about the rampant silliness and runaway corporate takeover of Napa. I really don't need a Persian temple, an Italian castle reconstruction, or a ski lift ride to enjoy a good glass of wine. Everyone in Napa now wants to make it all an 'experience' and charge you $100 for the privilege. Enough already. Other than a discussion of how the vintners have manipulated the process to change the definition of a 'winery', Mr Conaway does not really go into much detail on what this all really means from the perspective of someone like me, the average wine consumer (unless I want to read about traffic and parking lots). There were a few interesting parts of the book, such as the parts that mention Jean-Charles Boisset and his wife, Gina Gallo, as Mr Conaway puts it, a member of 'wine royalty'. The fact we have 'wine royalty' in California goes to the heart of what's wrong with places like Napa. Napa has become a playpen and a vanity project for the wealthy. A Disneyland for drunkards.A lot of this book goes on at length about politicians, boards, meetings, lobbyists, vintners, and their opponents. To my eye a lot of it reads as one set of millionaires battling another set of millionaires. If you own land in Napa, much less a winery, by definition you have money. How dare you build your vineyard next to my hunt club where I ride my horses! After a while the battles of the wealthy versus the uber-wealthy versus the activists just gets boring. It's all about status and ego, not really about the wine, much less saving the environment. At this point I view Napa as a lost cause. I started going to Napa decades ago (when it still was special) and have been there quite a few times, but it's been a few years. Napa has lost something, and to me it's just an overpriced corporate troll farm. My real concern, and in a way why I read the book, is learn something to hopefully avoid the Napa-ization of other wine regions. I don' t want the same greed and stupidity to spread. That is probably a lost cause, but I can hope for better.Mr Conaway could have written this book in two sentences. Why is Napa becoming a mess? Look in the mirror.

It's an excellent book - it's a dark tale of the realities of development and profiteering in the Napa Valley. The insights the author provides are unique, in depth and based on a handful of truly great sources. If you're a fan of Napa Valley, this book provides a different look into the harsh realities of development as it relates to wine making.

James Conaway has taken on the giants - the corporate and big money interests who have swallowed up this Valley of Wine. He is the only voice who is championing the causes of the locals and the environmentalists who have watched their community being devoured by high rollers without a conscience. The idea of cutting down 17,000 oak trees to grow vineyards is not compatible with being green or even human. No one has raised the voices of the community of the ordinary people in Napa better than Conaway, a superb writer whose novelistic style brings readability and pleasure to every paragraph. My only sorrow is that there are only three books in his incredible trilogy, which is a monumental achievement. You don't have to know anything about wine or even be interested in the environment to enjoy this fast paced, ripping good, true to life yarn. It's nonfiction at its finest.

The book seems to be carefully researched and is packed with interesting tidbits about the valley, it’s people and the wine Industry. After reading this (and the prior 2), one is left with the impression that we are loving this place to death. (I live in Napa).

I purchased this book for my boyfriend who works in Napa Valley in the wine industry. He has not read it yet but was very excited to get this book. He has read the others books by James Conaway. He said he recommends it.

Conway has really given us a winner this time. His previous books on The Napa Valley were well done yet this one has done him, and Napa, proud.

Still reading.

The re-orientation of Napa Valley from agriculture to high-end tourist mecca is a well-known secret. I've lived in the valley for 44 years and know many of the people in this book. Conaway gets it: the public obsession with wine is transforming arcadia into disneyland. Few observers outside Napa see beyond the glitzy tourist brochures or wine-industry promotions. Conaway however dives deep. He's not seduced by the glamorous life-style or chic-rustic tasting rooms. He doesn't rely on wine or hospitality industry brochures. So instead, in this book we get to know the people whose names may not be seen on wine labels. He describes the populist groundswell among residents exasperated with traffic; alarmed by cancer rates among the highest in California; and worried about water consumption in an arid region. In this book, Conaway describes how a decade ago agriculture in Napa was redefined to mean not only growing food but also marketing (food-and-wine pairings, etc.). Then the door was opened to the aggressive tourism that now (1) enrichens the industry and (2) pleases governments; and which also crowds the valley, consumes the water, and drives the housing costs beyond the reach of the very workers who labor to sustain the glamour. The public has deplored these changes, but neither letters to editors, nor public comments at government meetings, nor sign-holding demonstrations have impressed local law-makers. It takes a keen outsider like James Conoway to document the arc in the valley from superb ag to self-congratulatory "world-class" tourism. Unlike most outside observers of Napa, Conaway writes from the community's perspective instead of from the wine industry's. The industry---which is now as much tourism as viticulture--- may not much like the harsh glare of truth, but readers who prefer to know the reality of the county, rather than its image, will appreciate Conaway's research and reporting.
