This book is a nice read that is easy to finish. Micheal Moran will travel for you to take you places where you'll most likely never go yourself.
OBSERVATIONS:- Covers the brief German colonialist period- Investigates issues of poverty, cultural dislocation and crime (the "raskols")- Not so much on cannibalism per se, but it is disconcerting to read how relatively frequently uppity missionaries were eaten!- The Manus Island dances give new meaning to the term "Members Only"PROS- Well-researched- Multiple sets of great photos- Stories of adventurous missionaries and misfits such as Count D'Albertis, the Cambridge Seven, Bronislaw Malinowski, Baron Miklouho-Maclay and of course Errol Flynn- Good exploration of cultural concepts and artifacts such as malagan masks, tubuans, dukduks etc.- Best book chapter is the Essay on Kwato Island - very poignant, poetic and melancholyCONThe balance of memoir, travelogue, history and essay is good but not as good as other travel writers such as Robert D. Kaplan or Bruce Chatwin. Moran has all the right ingredients, but the proportions need tweaking.Great line: "once the tropics infects your blood, it enslaves you like a terminal illness"
This was a satisfying, informative, entertaining and thought provoking read. Having lived in New Zealand and Australia most of my adult life, I have never paddled up to the Coral Sea. I have been to other parts of Polynesia and Melanesia but what is described in this book is a series of cultures different from what I have encountered. Part history, biography and travel story it works on all those levels. It is clear on the legacy of European colonisation and the missionairies role in subverting existing beliefs and traditional tribal structures. Unsuprising many Europeans came to a bad end without quite realising why. The dangerous currents then are still in force today and Mr Moran encounters some of them in his travels. Yet what emerges is the richness of differences, even in short distances-these can often be baffling when on the surface there may be a sameness about the environment, the people and what they appera to do and beleive in. It is a book I shall long treasure.
Australian travel writer Michael Moran boned up, so to speak, before his leisurely sweep through the cannibal islands. The cannibals are mostly Christians now, of somewhat puritanical bent, but not so strait-laced that they do not tease tourists about who's for dinner.Nevertheless, this is more ambitious than the usual drool of travelogues, and consequently somewhat disappointing in that it shoots high but hits low too often.Moran has lived in Poland and knows Polish and German, useful because he wants to explore the present in the context of the recent past -- the colonial era of Germany, Russia, Japan and Australia. Polish comes in because Poles did, especially the anthropologists Bronislaw Malinowski and the Russian Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay, who introduced the concept of living at length among one's subjects. Moran has unlimited admiration for him.For the missionaries, his feelings are mixed, as they should be.Having packed his boxes of 19th century books, Moran then visits Port Moresby, in 2000 and still one of most dangerous places. Moran explains he will not visit the Highlands, even more dangerous, and he is glad to get out of Moresby for the eastern or island provinces: Massim, New Ireland, New Britain, Buka, (very briefly) Bougainville, the Trobriands.It was hot.Moran tries, not too successfully, to keep three balls in the air: flashbacks to the early years of white contact, meetings with Melanesians, meetings with `expatriates.'The theme of the book becomes, "the beautiful children of Melanesia." These are contrasted with the fierce (but usually amiable once introduced) older men and the sullen, resentful young ones.These, in turn, are contrasted with expats, who are either like Moran or, more often, western rejects, drunks, liars, con artists.It's all a little too pat and somewhat skimpy on the Melanesians.The attempt to analyze Papua New Guinea politics is interesting and may even, who knows?, be fairly accurate. That trying to impose parliamentary democracy on the sons of headhunters, people so poor that even the chiefs buy cigarettes one at a time, was a mistake seems obvious. But parliamentary democracy has failed in places with much stronger claims to be part of the modern world than Melanesia.Melanesia is a violent place these days. But it always was. Whether it is more violent is a question Moran does not ask."Beyond the Coral Sea" is beautifully written; no other contemporary travel writer I know is in the same league. (I would have to go back more than half a century to Vincent Cronin's "The Golden Honeycomb" to find its equal.)
An informative and at times entertaining read about Papua New Guinea and it's surrounding islands. The author interweaves his story of travel with the history of various explorers, missionaries, and local personages. He describes the various impacts modernization has had on the islands and discusses the effects missionaries, colonization, and the world wars have wrought. The book provides good insight to places rarely written about and the author colorfully describes various festivals, arts, and customs. I enjoyed the book although at times it slowed and a sense of sanctimony occasionally pervades the work. The book whetted my appetite to learn more about the region's history and art and an extensive bibliography is provided.
As a traveller who has spent a total of about 18 months in and around the island regions of Papua New Guinea, I found this book to be just what I look for before and during a trip to any area. Moran's trip illustrated exactly what a traveller will experience while in the country and also gives the historical background so that time is not wasted trying to discover how a culture or area has come to be what it is.While looking over the harbor of Rabaul and seeing the Duke of York Islands and the southern end of New Ireland, I felt as though I could feel the history taking place. Even Moran's encounters with modern day expatriots in airports and towns ring so true to my experiences that I felt he was writing about my trip without me knowing it.It is my goal to gain this insight for every country I visit but it is hardly realized. This book fulfilled that goal for Papua New Guinea and raised the bar for my travel reading in the future.

I read Mr Conaway's first Napa book years ago, and in general I found it to be a fairly interesting read. When I saw that a third volume in the series was available I eagerly downloaded the Kindle version. A lot of things have changed in Napa since volume 2 in the series was published in 2003, and most of those changes have not really been for the better.What I was hoping for was a book that would talk about the rampant silliness and runaway corporate takeover of Napa. I really don't need a Persian temple, an Italian castle reconstruction, or a ski lift ride to enjoy a good glass of wine. Everyone in Napa now wants to make it all an 'experience' and charge you $100 for the privilege. Enough already. Other than a discussion of how the vintners have manipulated the process to change the definition of a 'winery', Mr Conaway does not really go into much detail on what this all really means from the perspective of someone like me, the average wine consumer (unless I want to read about traffic and parking lots).There were a few interesting parts of the book, such as the parts that mention Jean-Charles Boisset and his wife, Gina Gallo, as Mr Conaway puts it, a member of 'wine royalty'. The fact we have 'wine royalty' in California goes to the heart of what's wrong with places like Napa. Napa has become a playpen and a vanity project for the wealthy. A Disneyland for drunkards.A lot of this book goes on at length about politicians, boards, meetings, lobbyists, vintners, and their opponents. To my eye a lot of it reads as one set of millionaires battling another set of millionaires. If you own land in Napa, much less a winery, by definition you have money. How dare you build your vineyard next to my hunt club where I ride my horses! After a while the battles of the wealthy versus the uber-wealthy versus the activists just gets boring. It's all about status and ego, not really about the wine, much less saving the environment.At this point I view Napa as a lost cause. I started going to Napa decades ago (when it still was special) and have been there quite a few times, but it's been a few years. Napa has lost something, and to me it's just an overpriced corporate troll farm. My real concern, and in a way why I read the book, is learn something to hopefully avoid the Napa-ization of other wine regions. I don' t want the same greed and stupidity to spread. That is probably a lost cause, but I can hope for better.Mr Conaway could have written this book in two sentences. Why is Napa becoming a mess? Look in the mirror.
It's an excellent book - it's a dark tale of the realities of development and profiteering in the Napa Valley. The insights the author provides are unique, in depth and based on a handful of truly great sources. If you're a fan of Napa Valley, this book provides a different look into the harsh realities of development as it relates to wine making.
James Conaway has taken on the giants - the corporate and big money interests who have swallowed up this Valley of Wine. He is the only voice who is championing the causes of the locals and the environmentalists who have watched their community being devoured by high rollers without a conscience. The idea of cutting down 17,000 oak trees to grow vineyards is not compatible with being green or even human.No one has raised the voices of the community of the ordinary people in Napa better than Conaway, a superb writer whose novelistic style brings readability and pleasure to every paragraph. My only sorrow is that there are only three books in his incredible trilogy, which is a monumental achievement.You don't have to know anything about wine or even be interested in the environment to enjoy this fast paced, ripping good, true to life yarn. It's nonfiction at its finest.
The book seems to be carefully researched and is packed with interesting tidbits about the valley, it’s people and the wine Industry. After reading this (and the prior 2), one is left with the impression that we are loving this place to death. (I live in Napa).
I purchased this book for my boyfriend who works in Napa Valley in the wine industry. He has not read it yet but was very excited to get this book. He has read the others books by James Conaway. He said he recommends it.
Conway has really given us a winner this time. His previous books on The Napa Valley were well done yet this one has done him, and Napa, proud.

The re-orientation of Napa Valley from agriculture to high-end tourist mecca is a well-known secret. I've lived in the valley for 44 years and know many of the people in this book. Conaway gets it: the public obsession with wine is transforming arcadia into disneyland. Few observers outside Napa see beyond the glitzy tourist brochures or wine-industry promotions. Conaway however dives deep. He's not seduced by the glamorous life-style or chic-rustic tasting rooms. He doesn't rely on wine or hospitality industry brochures. So instead, in this book we get to know the people whose names may not be seen on wine labels. He describes the populist groundswell among residents exasperated with traffic; alarmed by cancer rates among the highest in California; and worried about water consumption in an arid region. In this book, Conaway describes how a decade ago agriculture in Napa was redefined to mean not only growing food but also marketing (food-and-wine pairings, etc.). Then the door was opened to the aggressive tourism that now (1) enrichens the industry and (2) pleases governments; and which also crowds the valley, consumes the water, and drives the housing costs beyond the reach of the very workers who labor to sustain the glamour. The public has deplored these changes, but neither letters to editors, nor public comments at government meetings, nor sign-holding demonstrations have impressed local law-makers. It takes a keen outsider like James Conoway to document the arc in the valley from superb ag to self-congratulatory "world-class" tourism. Unlike most outside observers of Napa, Conaway writes from the community's perspective instead of from the wine industry's. The industry---which is now as much tourism as viticulture--- may not much like the harsh glare of truth, but readers who prefer to know the reality of the county, rather than its image, will appreciate Conaway's research and reporting.

This author provides a simple and adequate introduction to the basic concepts of Topology.He begins with sets and their operations, and then moves up the food chain of collectives to functions and vector relationships, and then on to metric spaces, ending with various elementary topics in topology such as topological spaces, connectedness and compactness. All well and good, so far.To the author’s credit, proofs and exercises begin immediately and are coterminous with the text itself.They are well selected too.To his discredit, however, I thought the discussion on functions was minimal to the point of almost being incomplete, if not negligent. However, when I recognized that the book had first been published in 1962, which incidentally was the first year I took Topology, only then did I realize that minimal treatment of functions was par for the course in those days.I mention this in passing only because I remember having a difficult time with the rather subtle idea of “an image of a function,†which I learned the hard way, was to follow us students of elementary Topology all the way into advance Topology a semester later.Of much greater concern to me is the fact that the author went directly from “open and closed sets†directly into “metric spaces†without discussing the intervening structures of “groups†and “rings,†both so fundamental to later developments. How can he be allowed to get away with doing that?How much better off I would have been when I first took Topology had I spent just a bit more time fully understanding all the subtle fine points of functions, groups and rings the first time around.It is true that the “image of a function†is revisited here in the chapter on continuity, which arguably, is perhaps a better place to introduce that idea. However, the omission of groups and rings is very neigh unforgivable.I searched for a rationale for their omission but could find none?Other than these two not so minor details, the rest of the book flows smoothly without hiccups or surprises. Altogether, in the end, I must begrudgingly admit, it is a solid introduction to Topology. Three stars
Overall, great introductory book to topology. The pedagogy was excellent and the development of topics made sense in going from metric spaces (a notion that is general more intuitive) to abstract topological spaces.In particular, it was great for self-study as Mendelson doesn't shy away from fully fleshing-out proofs and repeating relatively similar cases with some additional notes (e.g. when going from metric to topological spaces and proving several ideas there). The book itself can certainly be read by anyone with a set theory background and some intuitive notion of limits/sequences (i.e. a class in pre-calculus), but that doesn't mean it's easy, by any means. I struggled quite a bit with the intuition behind some of the proofs, and have, more than once, rolled around on my bed trying to recall (or prove again) some particular statement that I found quite useful. Sadly, the book doesn't have a section on homotopy equivalence and some other useful notions, but do recall it is an introduction in exactly 200 pages of short text.This book took me at least 20-30 hours to get through, skipping only the very latter section on compactess and doing at least two of the harder problems in each section; but I have very little experience with analysis, something I'm sure would have helped complete this and gain the corresponding intuition much more quickly.Again, great book and would highly recommend it for self-study of topology.
I am a robotic scientist in South Korea. I purchased this book for an introductory course in topology. As a non-specialist in applied mathematics, this book has concise contents and very readable. I am still on my way through this book and recommend this book to who wants to dive into an astonishing world of topology. Highly recommended for non-math-specialists.
This is an entry level book about general topology (or point set topology). The book is written in a clear and well-organized manner, quite easy to follow. It's worth mentioning that aside from the rigorous statement of concepts/theorems, the author also made an effort to explain how and why people get there. This helps me gain the mathematical intuition about the topics, and hence gain better and structured understanding and make the topics really a solid part of my knowledge. The problems are quite gentle and proper for beginners. BTW, I am not majored in mathematics, but I feel quite comfortable going through this book. Quite pleasant reading experience.
Intended for the advanced undergraduate student with a respectable level of mathematical maturity, Mendelson begins with the necessary review of set theory. From there the book delves into metric spaces, topological spaces, connectedness, and compactness. In short, it presents the basics of topology in a clear, linear, very readable fashion.Readers would be well advised to be familiar with the elements of proof, set theory, linear algebra, and abstract algebra in addition to analysis. A knowledge of geometry is also helpful, as one might expect.Weighing the price of this book against the depth and breadth of other texts, this volume offers more to the student who is studying topology on a budget. Unfortunately, as with most books in this category, there is no solution guide provided for the exercises. A selection of hints for the exercises would have been a nice addition but otherwise does not detract from the purpose of the work: to give the beginning topologist an overview of the subject.

The one thing I want to say is I loved getting to see everything from Lincoln’s point of view. This book was non-stop action all the way through. I was on the edge of my seat, and my heart bleed for Lincoln’s. Leia did an amazing job gripping me from the first page. I love when an author can put you in a character’s head, and you feel everything they are. She wrote a male’s point of view brilliantly. This series gets better with each book.Fallen Academy has topped my list as one of the most anticipated reads of 2018/2019. Every book consumes me, and I can’t put the book down until I finish it. If you’re looking for a new series to read, you’ve found it.
Year 3 was an amazing book, with Brielle going through SO much!! But with only little snippets of how Lincoln was doing, it left me wanting to know more about what he had been doing and how he had (or maybe hadn’t) dealt with the loss. Year 3.5 gave me everything I wanted! What an amazing story full of all the feels! And some new characters to love! It was definitely hard having to go through some of Lincoln’s tough moments with him, but it made me feel more connected with his character.
So where do you even start with this book?! Your heart gets ripped out, and you sob! Yes SOB because of what Lincoln goes thru!! 😠and then by the time you think it can’t get better it does. TENFOLD! Then instead of crying sad tears, they are tears of JOY! I LOVED getting to be inside Lincoln’s head and just to see and feel how he feels and where his head is! Leia has definitely done it again! You will definitely want to get this book RIGHT NOW!!
After reading Fallen Academy: Year Three, from Brie’s side, it was beyond awesome to read Lincoln’s side. There is so much heart in this book, I’m still processing it all. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so do yourself a favor and read this right away.
I really enjoyed getting Lincoln's perspective on this story. Meeting James and Catia was so cool! They are really great characters. Hoping Catia joins the group one day. If there was anything I would change if asked it's that I wish we could have more of Lincoln's experience in San Francisco and less of him lamenting. This series is one of my favorites and I will read these books again and again for sure!
I have been reading this series from the beginning and it just keeps getting better and better. Lincoln POV really broke my heart. I could feel his anguish and despair. Then to feel his joy and happiness at reuniting with Brielle and his friends. This was an excellent finish to Year 3. I'm really looking forward to the next book, and it can't come soon enough. These books are on my keepers shelf.
I loved seeing Lincoln’s perspective of when Brielle was captive. I remember reading year three thinking of how he went that under and it was great to see what actually happened. I adored Catia and hope to see more of her! Often I don’t like reading a novella from the other half’s POV but I loved this one!

I love Lori Greenberg's books, this is the 4th book I have from her and will continue to get the rest of them and whatever else she comes out with. These mandalas are not the "typical" type seen in most designs, they are made up of interesting bits and shapes that make them fun to color. Since I like things on the unique side this book is perfect! There are 50 one sided designs on non-perforated medium weight paper. Gel pens do not bleed through but markers will so use a backing sheet. The book is a square size so the designs fit nicely on the page without a lot of excess blank space, there is plenty of room at the binding to easily cut the page out of the book if you like to remove them like I do. The size also makes the book a bit more portable for on the go colorist. This is a book you will want to add to your collection, you will not be disappointed!
I tend to choose some very "intentional" coloring books, usually botanicals, then get all wrapped up in making the designs look real. Not terribly relaxing! Lori's designs are much better for de-stressing and actually enjoying coloring. I love the curvy shapes she often uses, as well as open spaces. These books make the coloring fun!

Wonderful relaxing mandalas to color...quality paper and easy to use. Love it
Love Lori G.'s coloring books. I really appreciate the difference in pattern sizes. You can get in and do some fine detail work on some pages, and on other pages, you can take advantage of the larger patterns in order to practice your shading skills with colored pencils or just have fun and do a quick bit of coloring with markers or gel pens. The paper is thinner but has a wonderful toothy texture, excellent for colored pencils. I did use some really wet gel pens and had only minor bits of bleed through, but not a problem because I always slip some printer paper between pages when I color. The patterns in this book are really pleasing and I am enjoying it. Another home run for Lori Greenberg!
This is another amazing coloring book by this designer! Wonderful designs that range from intermediate to advanced in my opinion because the spaces to color run from decent size to small for coloring. This is not a full sized book like say a kids coloring book would be. But it's perfect to fit in your purse if you have a nice sized one. The pages are not thick like card stock but are also not thin. Great for using gel pens or colored pencils.

The original with its Confucian interpretations (which are now part of the I Ching offical version, of which their are many translations) seems to be giving specific guidance to Chinese Rulers of ancient times which I think changes the personal to the general and the obvious to the obscure .His definitions of the 64 hexagrams are more meaningful and yet retain the important spiritual insights which is essential in any wisdom to temper both the good fortune and bad .So for those who are seeking an insight and directions to personal dilemmas or quandaries as some way of acting or initiating the first steps , this is an excellent manual
What to say - where to begin... This book is an absolute treasure. Before this manuscript, I read the `Tao Te Ching', by Jane English. It feels like where one book ended, the other began. There are many similar views between the two concerning: how to feel, how to think, and how to apply. The `I Ching' is another book you can read a little every day -OR- read its entirety in 2 hours. I personally read 2-3 chapters a day. I would soak in the material, and then write down essential points at the close of each section.Firstly, hats off to Brian Browne Walker with this user friendly version of the `I Ching'. Anyone can read it, and if you allow some time, you can then absorb the information and attempt to apply. Each chapter is 2 pages long, but a wealth of knowledge is contained in each and every one. If everyone read this book and applied a fraction of it, we might revert back to when we lived in a better time, rather than the current state of affairs. However, you cannot force anyone to do anything; with that said, read this book for yourself, and be on your way to becoming a better human being.Everything happens for a reason including the daily struggles in life we encounter. More important, is how we as individuals, deal with these situations. This is what shapes us as individuals. There is such a positive outlook represented in this masterpiece. In my opinion, who wouldn't benefit from reading this volume? It is extremely valuable to read 1-2 chapters per day. This is just enough to remind you of what is truly important in life - not the things we can reach out and touch.....but peace of mind...There many recurring ideals which are extremely significant. I would like to mention a few:1). Proper principles - stay loyal to them for they are your most important asset. No matter what, stay correct in your thoughts, in your words and in your actions.2). Non-action; Do nothing. You cannot force anyone or anything. So what do you do? Allow things to happen of their own accord. This goes for people as well. You cannot force others to do what you want. You cannot push people to do the right thing, so simply allow them to learn at their own pace.3). Inferior elements - free your body and mind of all inferior thoughts. More importantly focus your attention inward and how to work on honing your skills. Look at yourself as a `work in progress'. As good of a person as you are, you can always work on some facet to improve. Discover what qualities you need to sharpen, and take the necessary steps5). Acceptance - accept life and all that it brings to us. Realize that no matter what comes to us whether disaster or fortune; there is a reason why it is happening. Understand - this particular event is occurring because this is exactly what we need to work on a specific aspect of our character. Grasp this opportunity to fix your inner self. I have been using the I Ching for guidance for decades. This is an excellent translation which is good for beginners as well as more experienced users. If I am allowed only one translation it would be this one. Having said this I highly recommend in addition the Baynes translation as well as Carol Anthony's. She is particularly good for relationship issues. In addition, for beginners, it is not necessary, in my opinion, to use special coins. I use ordinary copper pennies and exchange them every so often for shiny new ones. Also, not necessary to do a special ritual; just treat the book with respect. I personally learned very early not to ask specific questions. The I Ching will tell you what you need to know, not what your ego thinks is important. Working with the I Ching is an adventure with subtle but meaningful results. Give it a try!
An old chiropractor of mine recommended this translation of The I Ching to me many years ago. I've used it weekly w/a couple of decades now; to supplement other I Ching translations, including the Wihelm/Baynes version or to use just by itself, or if I'm in a hurry. What I like especially about Brian Brown Walker's book is that the author gives a lot of 'meat' ('tofu' ??) w/o getting overly 'wordy' or complicated. However, the core concepts & 'truths' described are quite apt & dovetail perfectly with other 'truthy' longer I Ching versions that I've found over the years. I even have TWO copies of this book in my house (I misplaced this book once & I ordered a 2nd copy). Now I'm never without my 2nd favorite version of the I Ching. And it's so fast; I can throw the I Ching, look up the resulting hexagrams & read what this book says about each one in a pretty short time, if I'm pressed. However, if I want to go back & meditate longer on the answer, this translation is good for that too. It's such an inexpensive book, it's one of the best bargains out there.
This is a lovely book on the I Ching. It is unique in the manner in which each hexigram is detailed and defined. The narratives for each hexigram are very insightful, and a joy to read and contemplate. You will find that each I Ching book has something to say, something to teach, and something to tell in their own special way. This is a brilliant star in my collection of I Ching books, I consult it's wisdom often. I know you will cherish it as well.
I bought my original copy of this book back in 2006 and I just bought a new one to replace it. This is in my opinion the best translation of The I-Ching that I've ever encountered. It's honest and has a certain elegance that pays homage to the great tradition of Taoism. The language is gentle. No unnecessary "thou art" language. The tone in which it is written is balanced and respectful and the guidance offered by this book has been of great help to me.
