Bought this specifically for the ornament. The ornament is heavy plastic and brightly colored. Perfect for our 2yearold to add to her tree. We (try) to get an ornament every year that matches kiddos' birthday theme and this was great!
Very good idea. Got this for my son for Christmas since the Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of his favorite books. He loved the book and ornament! I know he will treasure these items forever.
A favorite story for my grandson so I wanted a Christmas ornament- this one is very cheap looking like you might find in the dollar store! I would not waste your money but instead buy a baby toy and make into an ornament.
My family has always loved Eric Carle's writings. Combining this book with a Christmas ornament is a "perfect way" to introduce a young child to these stories, and continue the celebration when the ornament is hung on the family Christmas tree. A great idea!

This is an excellent book! I couldn’t put it down from start to finish! I am definitely not a history buff, but I gave it a chance and was not disappointed. The story makes history come alive, and the characters are so well written that I found myself completely invested in the story. All the characters go through a development arc, even the minor characters, which is very rare, in my experience. I felt a connection to all the characters and their storylines. The book is also very well researched; the plot and all the supporting details worked together to paint a convincing picture of Civil War America. I highly recommend this book! It will make you laugh, cry, gasp, and maybe even bite your nails like me. :)
A marvelous read and a terrific insight into what women were able to do during the Civil War. Too often women were seen as merely bystanders who did little to advance the cause on either side. In this wonderfully written story with obviously excellent research, the author places us right in the thick of the espionage that was so vital to the war effort - it's dangerous and exciting. This is also a book with a great romance. Something for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The characters and plot may be historical fiction, but the author creates a compelling story set during the Civil War. Having hiked and biked the Great Dismal Swamp, I really enjoyed the depictions of that location in this book. Aside from the superb writing, you will enjoy this book if you're into history, if you like strong female protagonists, and if you are into spy stories. Even if none of those do it for you, this is a great and engaging book! Highest recommendation!

I've always been a fan of historical fiction, and this book is sure to please anyone who enjoys this genre. The book masterfully pulls together several plot lines and creates memorable characters. Enjoy an intriguing novel!
If you like civil novels, you will enjoy this story. It was an easy read keeping you interested all the way through. It left me wanting the story to continue with the lives of the characters. I hope there's a sequel.
nna suffers daily at the hands of her abusive husband. She hates being in a loveless marriage and her only solace is her slave Mary. She meets a local shopkeeper named Benjamin, and the two fall in love. When she finds out that he is a Union spy, she is determined to help him in order to spite her proudly Confederate husband and fight for her only friend, Mary. She has to keep it a secret from her husband and her spoiled daughter Kady. When her daughter fights out, her daughter also wants to join the spy ring. The two start to work together and end up growing closer as Kady learns more about her father's true nature. This was honestly one of the best historical fiction novels that I have ever read. It has multiple points of view that are revealed as the story goes on, and each character goes through so many different stages of development that they truly feel like real people. Kady has to go from being a spoiled brat to being a calm and collected young lady that knows how to keep secrets. Anna transforms from a scared sixteen-year-old girl who was forced to marry an abusive husband into the head of a spy ring. The character development was honestly the best part of the novel, as the multiple points of view allowed for some page time in many of the characters' minds. Even though this book was longer than what I usually spend my time reading, I definitely did not feel burdened in any way. I looked forward to reading the next 100 pages or so each night until I was finally done with the novel. The pacing was perfect. Even though it was a long novel, the pacing was steady, just enough to keep readers alert but not fast enough to confuse them. The world-building was also impeccable. By reading this, I was able to see the war-torn South of the 1800s for a few hours. Every scene is so well-described that it feels as if you were actually there. Even with the POV changes, each character leads their own lives in different areas, and the story represents that. The book seemed completely historically accurate, which is difficult sometimes for historical fiction novels to accomplish. This worldbuilding only added pages of description into the novel, but it still did not feel clunky or bulky in any way. There were no editing errors that I saw in the entire 665-page ebook, which is definitely something worthy of praise. It was a smooth read all the way through, not even any easy-to-miss formatting errors. My favorite character in this novel would definitely be Anna, as she fights so hard throughout the book just to stay positive and strong. She could have given up and just become silent at 16, never finding Benjamin, because she was so afraid of her husband. But instead, she went behind his back and undermined his work, along with the work of the other Confederates. She fought for Mary, who was her saving grace since she was sixteen. She could be such a role model, even as a fictional character. My second favorite character was Kady, as she changes from a spoiled Southern Belle who thinks her father could do no wrong to a sneaky and deceptive spy for her mother.Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this book! You just have to give it a read for yourself. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves historical fiction, romance novels, mystery novels, and novels with amazing world-building and character development. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.Â

Trashy and exploitive and above all derivative.
A real honest-to-goodness journalist wrote this book. More to the point, this is a reporter who worked for the newspaper in Kurt's hometown of Aberdeen AND grew up there. That means Jeff can capture the image of Aberdeen and what it was like for Kurt growing up in the timber town like the expert he actually is. This isn't just a book. This may be part of a grand memoir defining the everyman of Aberdeen while at the same time talking about Kurt's life as a whole. And because Jeff is a journalist, the freshness of his interviews are solid and his objectivity is clear. Unlike some other biographies out there, there are no made up theories here. Recommended for all ages.
I was waiting to buy this book until I read some reviews, then I saw a review online at the Nirvana Fan Club and decided to give it a shot. This book is written for an audience of teens and older so I wasn't expecting any new stories and was surprised that there are. There's a saddening story about Kurt's mom's reaction told by someone who was with her just after she heard about Kurt's death. There are some photos I've never seen before and pictures of two things Kurt drew, which I found most fascinating and there's an update on a memorial committee in Kurt's hometown that's trying to honor him there. The author knew Kurt when they were younger and the book says he is part of that group.The book is a high-quality hardback and isn't dumbed down like I thought it might be. If you want to know every detail of Kurt's life, there are other books out there that do the job better (though often in error or by making things up). But if you want to know "just the facts" and learn some new stories along the way you should buy this. I was pleasantly surprised with its quality and was happy to add it to my Cobain collection.Michael Mac
I was looking for a book that didn't favor either the suicide or murder theory but was neutral. This is that, however it is short and really just tells the basic story. It just skims the surface and doesn't go too deep. I was looking for something more in-depth. It is a easy short read and informative. It does seem to be a little more geared towards a younger audience it explains what some things that most people would know for example Heroin and warns not to do it. The author had known Kurt Cobain personally at a point in his life and I enjoyed his personal story, though like the book it was brief. Depending on what you are looking for this might be great. If you want something in-depth you might need to do what I am now doing and buy both Heavier Than Heaven and Love and Death. I haven't read them but I have a feeling they both have biases. I think maybe a true biography of Kurt Cobain by a neutral author has yet to be written.
Burlingame captures the essence of the "Seattle Scene" in the late 80s and early 90s that is often misunderstood by outsiders. The author is not only from Cobain's hometown but knew him before his world fame. The credibility that adds to this book is outstanding.I have taught middle school social studies for the past ten years. I often do a unit on "Rock History" and will be including this book for sure.
I want to start off by saying I am not the reading type, in order for me to read a book it much capture my attention right away. I was unable to put this book down after just reading the first sentence. I would highly recommend this book to anybody that is trying to learn more about the beggining of Nirvana and the life of Kurt Cobain and what it was like for him growing up. Jeff you did an awesome job writing this book.
This was written for a third grader. If you want a much better picture of Kurt Cobain, get Heavier Than Heaven or Come As You Are. Very rudimentary in the information that is offered. I learned one or two things that I hadn't from all the other books I've read about Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. If you're a little kid that has heard of Kurt and Nirvana, then you may want to read it because it's written for those that were born after his death.

I haven't picked up a book in a few years because works been busy. It's a pass time that I miss. "Dirt Don't Slow You Down" got me back into reading and was a great a book. I couldn't put it down. Very interesting and motivating story about a unique individual. Thanks Magnus for sharing your journey. Maybe one day I'll be able to make it to an outlaw gathering with my 912.
Inspirational story even if you are not a sports car fanatic. I really thought there would be a whole lot of Porsche talk and knowledge within. And there really is some of that within.. But that is only part of the story Magnus tells. Most of it covers his upbringing, how he became an entrepreneur and where that led him. I will definitely read this again and consider it part of my permanent book collection.

As a Porsche 911 fan the book is a natural book for me to read. What surprised me was that I really enjoyed his story as much as I enjoyed the 911 stories.
After meeting Magnus Walker in person, I felt compelled to read this. It was worth every penny of the $11.45 to gain an understanding of his more personal background, as well as his tribulations, business endeavours, and successes. Grade 6 Up—Fry was a young American journalist working in pre-World War II Germany when he witnessed an anti-Semitic uprising led by storm troopers, and he was inspired, over 13 months of espionage and clandestine efforts during the war, to save people from impending annihilation. Back in New York City and following the French-German armistice in 1940 that provided Germany control over France, he realized that numerous renowned artists, writers, and scientists, both Jews and non-Jews, would be trapped under the Vichy government. Fry joined the newly formed Emergency Rescue Committee and volunteered to lead an escape mission for as many of these refugees as possible. His work began as a one-man operation in Marseilles and quickly grew to a fully staffed unit posing as a refugee center. Fry not only helped the famous and talented, but also many ordinary Jews to escape France through Spain and Portugal and then to ports beyond. McClafferty describes an exciting if not daring and altruistic episode in this righteous gentile's life. Numerous black-and-white photographs of the period and individuals who worked closely with Fry augment the readable and well-documented text. When I was in college I had a very close Sephardic friend who was born in Paris in January 1939. She told me her family had escaped Europe on a false Portuguese passport and that she was a distant relative of the famous Italian painter, Modigliani.I don't know for sure if Varian Fry helped her family, but one mention of a Modigliani (a fleeing Italian socialist) is mentioned in the book.Fry gave up his job and his marriage, and was willing to give up his life, to help get refugees away from Hitler.This book is a fascinating portrait of a great man, his life and his work, as well as a fascinating addendum to WW2 history for a maven like me.

This edge of your seat biography about Varian Fry, a little known hero who rescued hunted people from under the nose of the Nazis in occupied France is a shining example of that truism. Fry, a young New York journalist, an average person, whose knowledge of espionage comes from movies, finds himself on a startling war-time mission. Because no one else will go, he agrees to fly to Marseilles and help famous, therefore recognizable, artists, writers and scientists escape the Germans who have closed the French borders to round up Jews. With no training, Fry sets up a front refugee organization, develops a staff he can trust, hires a cartoonist to forge papers, finds maps for crossing the Pyrenees on foot, and locates the intellectuals on his list. His two week assignment lasts over a year, ending because he is thrown out of the country. It is legal to help refugees survive, but absolutely illegal to help them leave France without proper documents. Not since The Firm has paperwork been so tense and exciting. Sent to save 200, Fry saves 2000 including famous individuals (ex. Marc Chagall), British soldiers and frightened families. He does this in spite of the opposition of the American State Department whose officials in Marseilles and Vichy - with only one exception, a man now on a US postage stamp - hinder Fry and take away his travel papers. Fry is a hero who cannot handle a normal routine on his return to America; and the remainder of his life is sad. Near his end the French Government honors him for his important, brave war deeds. Long after his death he becomes the first American included at Yad Vashem as a Righteous Gentile. At a time when most Americans ignore the European disaster, Fry investigates rumors, understands Nazi goals, witnesses their atrocities, writes about them in US newspapers, and when asked, works tirelessly behind enemy lines to save trapped Jews and others. The author's clear language makes the chronological story thrilling. She gives useful historical background to the individual saga and provides a lot of wonderful photos. When Hitler took over and Jews were forced to flee, many wound up in France. But Hitler was advancing into France and the lives of refugee Jews were endangered again. Their only hope - one man, Varian Fry.Almost single handedly Fry managed to rescue two thousand refugees. McClafferty does an expert job of presenting the prevailing atmosphere of the times, evoked by numerous historically accurate details. Yet, she does this with flair and makes the story engrossing for the middle grade reader, the young adult reader or the adult reader. The story is definitely a page-turner, a study in how to defy a tyrant and overcome the darkness of the Holocaust.We are tempted to believe that every brave man deserves to life happily-ever-after. Courage, though, takes it's toll. This book is targeted at a young audience, nevertheless I recommend it to anyone seeking an introduction to a remarkable man through whom we can all draw inspiration. The author has done an excellent job conveying the danger, intrigue, frustration and ultimate success of the Emergency Rescue Committee's most charismatic character. I bought this book as a gift for a close friend who loves to read and loves motivational quotes. Of course, before I gave it to her I had to read a few quotes so I started with the ones in the first few pages ... then I read the whole book all the way to the end! I loved this book. It was perfect for my friend who needs a pick-me-up now and again and she still calls me randomly to tell me about the amazing quotes she is reading. Worthy purchase that I highly recommend!
If you're looking for some back up from some amazing women, this is the book to have. Every woman I know should have a copy. You will not be disappointed. Karen Weekes herself has many good things to say, and has been a wonderful professor, administrator, and inspiration. If you are somewhere you have never been, someone in this book has been there too. Whether it's Alice Walker, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, or Erma Bombeck, something will fit just for you. It came quickly and in great shape. Check it out.

I congratulate the author for compiling such a diverse collection of quotes by women. I bought the Kindle edition and wish I had purchased the print copy. The quotes are arranged by topic but the Table of Contents for the Kindle edition only includes the letters of the alphabet - impossible to determine the range of topics and can only guess what topics might be included. A physical copy of the book would have been easier to leaf through.Despite this limitation, this is one of the best collections of women's quotes that I have seen. I may need to buy the print edition, too!
Great food for thought, I ordered four more copies for my three daughters and niece. Wonderful that the thought provoking comments of these women from all walks of life have been put down in one book.
I bought for all the quotes (LOTS of them). It's a great resource for quotes, regardless of gender. The title and cover are great interest attractors.
I was a little surprised at the overall size of this book being smaller than I had envisioned. However; it is fairly thick and full of insightful and sometimes just plain funny quotes. It is excellent to keep at my office where every man is drawn to the title and instantly starts complaining before they open the cover. What fun. Really a very nice book and well worth buying
I purchased this item as a gift & now wish I had picked one up for myself.I have 'peeked' in it without cracking the binding, so my gift recipient will not know I had read through the authors I adore.... too many to mention, but Mother Teresa & Princess Diana & Erma Bombeck topped my check-it list.I am sure my newly 60 yr old woman friend will truly enjoy this wonderful treasure as her birthday gift!Maybe she'll let me borrow it. :-)
