Jeremy Birn has been a Lighting Technical Director at Pixar since 2002, and has lit shots in movies including Brave, Toy Story 3, Ratatouille, Wall-e, Cars 1 and 2, and The Incredibles. Jeremy Birn’s Digital Lighting and Rendering is a masterful treatise on digital lighting and, in my opinion, a must have on your bookshelf if you’re a 3d artist. While the text is clearly aimed at pre-rendered art, for example in animated movies or live-action effects, most of the concepts are fundamental enough to apply to lighting real-time scenes in games, or even more traditional art mediums. I found the pace to be good, and lots of important areas are covered. The chapter list includes lighting design, shadows and occlusion, environments and architecture, characters, cameras, composition, the science of color, rendering algorithms, textures, layers, production pipelines, and an appendix for getting a job in the industry. Though there are lots of books that cover specific topics or software packages (such as modeling in Maya), it’s more difficult to find higher-level books that focus on the fundamentals. Of course, it’s important to understand the tools you are using, but without a solid foundation you will likely end up making avoidable mistakes.My interest is definitely in real-time rendering, so many of the topics were not directly relevant. However, I do have some experience with pre-rendered content creation, mostly noticeably during my time in art school, and some of the topics here were even beyond what I learned getting a 4 year degree. I will say that the material would be most apt for people doing film, and the book is certainly catering to that audience. However, in my case, I find a lot of the real-time books to be too narrowly focused on the algorithms and maths and not enough time is spent telling you how to use those methods to produce quality art. So I like looking at other sources to get a different perspective. Even in games there is some crossover, for example in cut-scenes or making promotional images, so the knowledge can still be useful. All-in-all I enjoyed the book and I would highly recommend it to any current or aspiring 3d artist.
If you're a hobby 3D graphhics artist or thinking of entering into the world of computer graphics, then this book is an essential resource to give you that realism factor often missing in artists works seen today.The Book is superbly presented in glossy paper format with excellently reproduced colour images that generously fill the book as examples of how to achieve the right lighting for that perfect shot you were trying to setup but till now had no idea of how to achieve it.This volume is a how to for novice and advanced artist alike, brilliantly guiding you through the ins and outs of rendering the most perfectly realisticly shaded 3D image possible.Chapters guide you through Lighting workflow, three point lighting, Shadows (a must),Qualities of light, Colour, Exposure, Composition and staging (worth the price of the book alone), Materials and rendering algorithms(tips to turn a good work into a masterpiece)and Compositing(the absolute icing on the cake).There is a Lot one can learn from this volume and dare I say that it has to be if not the best then one of the very best presentations on this topic I've ever had the good fortune to study from.
Reviewers all over the internet have raved about this book for years and I was not disappointed when I finally purchased it last month. It truly is a "bible" in the digital graphic & animation industry.The author makes the information general enough so that it is useful no matter what software you use. As an Architect, my interest in 3d digital rendering is to create realistic photos of my unbuilt designs. However, I found the author's information on composing, lighting, and rendering animated characters (which seems to be the author's main focus) incredibly helpful in fulfilling my goals. Birn's approach is thorough and no-nonsense.
If only all the documentation for 3D software were written like this clear and concise book. I don't know why but the books I've read on 3D tend to leave me more frustrated than any area of learning that I've undertaken. It's a complex subject but some authors seemed determined to make it harder than it is. Not Mr. Birn. He explains not just how to do something but why. The added bonus is that the information is platform agnostic. He seems to cover a lot of the different terms software companies use to describe the same processes and he candidly assesses their value in the finished work. There a plenty of clear color renderings that show the subtle differences that are the difference between good and great. Worth every penny.
The 2nd edition was already an outstanding book. I'm just an amateur in 3D but Birn's work has been immensely helpful to clarify lot of things I had heard about but never seen in detail.The book gives a good look at the many aspects of the 3D rendering process without going too deep into technicalities : as such, it is a fitting read for beginners and intermediate users alike.I'm re-reading the 3rd edition right now, I really liked the part related to the linear workflow (gamma correction), which to be honest had always puzzled me a bit in the past, but here it is explained with good clarity.I definitely recommend this book, especially if you are just beginning your exploration into 3D. It will give you a first background of knowledge and put you on the right path.

I will spend a week at Olympic National Park this July with the Appalachian Mountain Club "August Camp" so I bought this book to start planning which hikes I would like to take for the daily activities. The hike descriptions are very clear and I like having the elevation profile for each hike. At 74, my legs are not as strong as they used to be. I made a short trip to this park about 15 years ago, and I want to fill in what I missed. This is all I need to plan a week there.
Solid guide with great introductory section on hiking. Covers many of the major trails quite thoroughly, but there are some gaps/very brief reviews of some of the excellent trails that we hiked. Seems like a particularly good guide for backpackers; less thorough coverage of shorter day hikes. Pair it with a trip to the ranger station/asking friends for advice to be sure you learn as much as you can before deciding how to spend your time in this amazing park.
This book is fantastic for both beginning and advanced hikers. It pointed out the trails I knew about, and quite a few I was unfamiliar with.
Super helpful book for going to the Olympic National park. I love the maps included of the hikes and also the checkpoints with the miles in! It has a helpful index and has a wide range of hikes from week long backpacking trips to day hikes!
It seems that Falcon produces two types of hiking book -- one that is black and white with text, the other that has all the hiking detail with beautifully detailed color maps and color photos. This one is the latter. I've gone through it page by page, and it's excellent -- especially for backpackers. There are hikes in here for day hikers, although many have distances suited only for backpackers..
This is a good book for an experienced hiker as most of the hikes are strenuous and long term. If you want just to enjoy short popular hikes, you are better off just googling it or take free brochures in the Visitor's center.
What I really like about this book is that it has so many hiking options that it makes it easy to compare. I don't know how exhaustive the list provided by this book is, but it has enough information that it will allow me to make good choices for me and my family.
Good series. Well written and illustrated. I also purchased the Mount Ranier edition.

SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ DEAD JOKER OR NO ECHO!!!! The convener of our mystery reading club made a huge mistake and decided we would sample Anne Holt by reading 1222. Sadly for all of us, that was our introduction to Hanne Wilhelmsen. Immediately afterward, I went back and read the first seven books in order. Now much is clear that was previously obscure. These books are addictive, and the plots get better and better. My only frustration is that while Hanne herself and her close friends and associates (Billy T., Hakon, Karen, and even Silje) are three-dimensional characters, the author seems to have trouble writing Hanne's romantic life in a credible way. Cecelie always felt two-dimensional to me, and now Nefis feels the same way. Neither woman's relationship with Hanne is fleshed out as richly and vitally as is Billy T's fraught relationship with her. They both seem to be mere plot foils.
Fascinating character. Loved this book. I read it out of order to the books leading up to,this one and had no trouble reading it as a stand alone novel. I have ordered the next in the series.Great depth of character and story line kept me in the dark till the very end and a surprise twist too. Very good highly recommend!!
Anne Holt is such an underestimated writer and this particular book I really enjoyed. The usual dodgy translation in parts but who couldn't forgive that with such an excellent book.
Another great old fashioned mystery from Anne Holt, full of surprises & masterfully intwined storylines. The author never loses control of the narrative. It's a study in good writing, where plenty is left to the reader's imagination.
I really like this series and this story held my interest right to the end. But I don't get the ending. I went back and re-read the last few pages to see if I missed something. Can someone explain the ending?

I was guessing right until the last few pages, so kudos to Anne Holt for the beautifully plotted story. I have enjoyed this series immensely, Anne Holt is an excellent story-teller and I highly recommend this series to lovers of good writing, scandi-crime and women as lead characters. I read the series a little out of sequence so, it was backstory on character for me. Loved it.

Things have changed so rapidly in the developed world, technologically and culturally speaking, that some parts of the book may seem more historic than they would otherwise. What follows after a rather unsettling vignette is a high-profile quadruple murder investigation conducted by Chief Detective Inspector Wilhelmsen and her team. The scene of the crime is the home of Hermann Stahlberg, a wealthy industrialist known as much for his accumulation of filthy lucre as he is for his extreme reluctance to part with a krone of it. He is but one of the victims; the others are his wife and elder son, and a fourth individual who cannot be identified immediately. Incredible book! I can't believe that despite the time period of when this book was written, it still applies to today! Highly recommend this book - it will definitely make you think about the complexities of abortion, medicine and human life.
First, let me say I was a Michael Crichton fan and an avid reader of his later works. Second, I'm glad I never encountered this early work because it might have put me off reading his later and much better works. The constant use of footnotes explaining the medical jargon that permeated the first part of the book was jarring. Fortunately, the footnotes disappeared in the last part of the book. The last of the book was the kind of the writing that made me a fan in the first place.If you're not familiar with Crichton's works, don't let this one discourage you from reading his later works. You'll be missing out on a great writer if you do that.
I always loved Michael Crichton and thought I had read all of his novels. Surprise! There are some that were written under an alias, mostly while he was in medical school. This one was written in the mid-sixties, when abortion, for the most part, was illegal. I was in high school in New Jersey in the mid-sixties, and there were a few stories of girls who were sent by their parents to Mexico and other countries for abortions. But, although it includes some some deep discussions, the story isn't really a pro-con thing about a woman's right to choose. It is, first and foremost, a mystery revolving around an abortion that ended in death - and it certainly is a good mystery! Whodunit? I didn't guess it, and so the ending was a "reveal" for me. All of Crichton's novels seem to have an educational aspect, and this one certainly did, even containing footnotes, but I found them easily checked or just as easily ignored on my Kindle. The story's the thing, but for the curious the book is also filled with information. It was written when Critchton was a beginning writer, and so maybe not as polished as his later works, but I thought it was great.
A Case of Need is the story of Dr. John Berry’s efforts to clear his fellow doctor and friend, Dr. Arthur Lee, after a teenager in his care dies from an illegal abortion. My first thought for a title for this review was, ‘You’ll need a scorecard to follow all the characters in this somewhat preachy, meandering plot involving an obstinate doctor who wants to play detective but has no idea how the criminal justice system works.’ But that seemed a bit long.As mentioned above, the story deals with abortion and the need to broaden/relax the laws. So, depending on your political and religious leanings, you may find the story anywhere between contemporary and thought-provoking to depraved and immoral. Be advised.Beyond the ethical position it takes, there is a story here with some suspense and good pacing. The suspense is provided by assembling a myriad of suspects and digging into the background of several witnesses, many of whom have their own secrets – drug use, infidelity, self-destructive behavior, deceitfulness. And surprisingly, Berry, with no authority and only some vague background in the Military Police, unearths all of this information singlehandedly. But after doing so, he doesn’t understand he has more than enough to raise reasonable doubt; then he doesn’t want to use this information because it’s too “dirty;†finally, he complains that the lawyer didn’t use it aggressively enough. The only consistency I could find in Berry was that he always wanted to play it alone and as a result, the circumstances that pitted him against the world were of his own making. That behavior doesn’t gain my empathy and tends to make my mind wander to other books I could be reading.As a long-time Crichton fan, I thought I’d always be able to recommend one of his stories. I was wrong. My advice, look elsewhere for your reading entertainment.
Michael Crichton has the rare ability to produce stimulating fast-paced fiction mixed with intelligent technical description. Crichton is a doc so the science tends to revolve around medicine and biology and this one was written under a pseudonym while he was in med school. It won the Edgar award in 1969 before the name Michael Crichton meant anything. The book is a whodunit centered around an abortion that may or may not have been necessary. It takes place before Roe v Wade so it deals with the social reactions as well as detection aspects. All in all a fine read.
I have not yet finished the book, but it is interesting and holds my attention. Although this was an early novel of Crichton's, it is refreshing to encounter footnotes explaining mnemonics and medical details. Footnotes are particularly easy to bring up while reading on a Kindle - there is no need to flip pages to get to the end of the chapter and flip back. The primary draw for me is the protagonist fighting to break through the barriers to his investigation and the personal threats to himself set up by political powers of the medical establishment.
In this excellent medical thriller (written in 1969, an award winning book), taking place at a large Boston hospital, a doctor is accused of murder. The Randall family is well known for their medical professions and they reign high and mighty in the medical career field. But when daughter Karen Randall, 18 years old, dies after a botched abortion, a doctor is falsely charged with her murder. The reader can learn much about medical techniques and practices; there is a well defined glossary of terms at the end of each chapter. Also included at the end of the book is Michael Crichton's biography along with photos of his estate. An awesome story, highly recommend.

I purchased the paperback edition.Obviously hume's work is great, but the edition was of low quality. I'm not even talking about the translation, but the paper.If anyone's interested in hume's work, you'd be much better of investing a few more dollars on a higher quality edition.
Great thought provoking book about the nature of reality & it helps me go directly to sleep sometimes.
Delivered as excepted. On a side note, I've just discovered philosophy, and Hume is one of my favorite philosophers now.
