I wasn't sure how many stars to give this book. Two seemed few, but four seemed definitely too much, so...I must start by saying I absolutely love all of the Nikki Heat and Derrick Storm novels. I've read them all (some of them several times) and it's always been a very enjoyable and fun read. But sadly I can’t say the same for “Heat Stormâ€.I was very excited about this book. My expectations were pretty high, considering it was the last of both series of books, and the culmination of three stories (Nikki's, Storm's, and Castle's and Beckett’s) all in one. So it had to be great, right? Well, no.The book starts right where the 7th Nikki Heat ended. As with the other novels, I immediately got hooked and fell into the pace of the familiar dynamic of the storytelling, having at some points a hard time putting the book down. However, as I kept reading, the pace of the plot gradually escalated to a hasty, almost chaotic rhythm, and it kept rising all the way to the very end.In the previous books, the plots have always tended to reflect and incorporate certain details and moments occurred in the different seasons of the show, something that I’ve always appreciated. So I didn’t expect any less from this book. The eighth surely wasn’t the best season of the series, but I still wanted to see more of it in the book, secretly hoping too perhaps see some of the things we should have seen in the show. But that doesn’t happen at all in “Heat Stormâ€. On the contrary. All of the story focuses so much on Derrick Storm and Nikki Heat that every other character we’ve come to know and love over the years was basically kick to the curb. In the rapid succession of events, we barely get a glimpse of Richard Castle’s alter ego, our beloved Jameson Rook. Someone who’s been a solid, strong and valuable character in the previous books, someone who should be by Nikki’s side whether she wants it or not, whether it’s safe for him or not, makes so few appearances that it's almost like he's been erased from the story line entirely.The fast-forward feeling also translates into the actual narrative of the book, where carelessness and rashness resulted in a few discrepancies regarding general, descriptive aspects, but also Nikki’s character. Details of her life mentioned in the previous books don’t correspond to facts mentioned in “Heat Stormâ€. Some even contradict themselves. It is a clear hint that it wasn’t written by the same ghost writer.I knew from the previous books (both Heat and Storm series), that “Richard Castle†has had the tendency of wrapping up the ending pretty fast, the solving of the case happening in the blink of an eye. But the conclusion in this book actually succeeded in breaking the speed of light barrier. As I turned to the last page, I actually felt like I had missed an entire chapter. (Even the “acknowledgments†section is missing.) The only thing that the ending delivered me was a deep sense of deceit. I had kept on hoping, up until the very last chapter of the book, that we would still get the proper closure that we didn't get in the show's finale, the one the fans deserved, the one that the characters deserved. Considering the show's finale was so promptly and poorly-delivered, this book could have been a very nice way for redemption, a second chance like any other to make up for the hastily wrapped-up conclusion of the show, a unique opportunity to give the fans what they really deserved after so many years of loyalty. But basically, while reading the last couple of pages, all I felt was disappointment, even a bit cheated. All I got was the same bitter aching feeling I had when watching the last minute of the show, maybe even stronger.I can conclude by saying that even though the book may have had enough action, it lacked depth in every aspect. One of the things that bugs me the most is that the book could have been SO MUCH MORE. It is a pity it ended like this. But, in a way, I could have seen it coming. It is actually the only similarity between the finale of the show and the one in the book, an improper and empty ending for an otherwise rich and wonderful series.
I enjoyed the first six books in the series, but the last 2 books including this one are pale imitations of the six that preceded them. Like the last season of the series, the writing was disappointing and the main characters were not true to form. Items noted from previous books were ignored. It was full of inconsistencies and clearly not written by the same ghost writer. The main characters; Nikki and Rook, where separated for most of the book, Roach was no where to be seen and the conclusion was extremely unsatisfactory. I'm guessing they may be planning more books but based on this one and 'High Heat,' don't bother because I won't be reading them.
After reading High Heat, I had low expectations for this book, but purchased it anyway since I had invested in reading all the rest of the series. Heat Storm continues heading in the wrong direction with sophomoric writing, inconsistent character 'development' and swiss cheese-like story lines. Heat and Rook are dumbed-down versions of their previous selves. Their marriage is almost completely disregarded, and their crime-solving partnership is pretty much nonexistent. It definitely seems as though the new-ish ghost writer has very little concept of all the books preceding this one. Save yourself some time, save your money and pass on this one.
I keep reading Castle's books because I loved the TV show. It would be a lovely way to remember characters that I liked - it's the way of people who get used to people that are not, well, real. It happens with shows, books... But this book was not what I expected. Not better, but worse. I didn't buy the basic premise of Heat's mother resurrection, for starters. It changed the whole structure in which the series/books were supported. Of course things can change, that's life even for fiction characters. But changing the past requires a little bit more of coherence. I also didn't like the idea of Heat leaving Rook, which replicates the awful last season of Castle. The other aspect of this book I didn't like was the mix between Castle's characters from different series, Heat and Storm. Not only I didn't think it worked but the ending seemed too far-fetched. I'm not gonna talk about it because it could be a spoiler. So I'll wait the next book (if it comes) to decide if I'll keep reading Heat's stories. If it repeats this structure, I'm out.
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the previous 8 Nikki Heat books and was looking forward to seeing Nikki and Derrick Storm teamed up. But the characters have very little interaction as one chapter is Nikki, the next chapter is Derrick then back to Nikki and so on and so on. Just really felt like I was reading two short stories. I also think there was a change in ghost writers as it was more Derrick Storm style and not Nikki. Plus little from Rook which was a disappointment.
If I could give it 2 1/2 stars, that would be my evaluation. I was obsessed with Castle so I have all the DVDs ( bought season 8 to complete the series) and books. I agree that the last season and book were not up to par with the series. Greatly disappointed with it so I must say I was glad when the goons who were killed were named Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter since they were the showrunners who sank the show. I guess the ghost writer felt the same as all of us and avenged "Castle's" death. It followed along some of the episodes and arc of season 8 not much originality involved.

I recently returned from a waterfall getaway weekend to New York. This book was excellent in deciding which general area I wanted to go too and also several of the specific wateralls or "glens" with waterfalls. The descriptions were good, for the most part, and the pictures let you visualize the waterfalls.So, that is the positive. The negative is in the detail. Namely, maps and directions. A map showing how to get to the waterfalls for each area would have been very helpful in addition to the general description. I, personally, find maps more easy to understand than descriptions. Also, the directions were sometimes excellent, but sometimes convoluted or only good if starting at a specific location. Again, a map would have helped with the directions if they included a cross street to enter into a GPS.Overall, if you are not familiar with Waterfalls in New York, which I wasn't, this book was excellent in helping me decide that I wanted to make a trip here and that I wanted to go to the Ithaca region. It was also very helpful in selecting which specific waterfalls I would hike into. But once we got to Ithaca and were actually going to the areas with waterfalls, my friend and I primarily used another book that included maps to each waterfall.
Let me start by stating what this book is not. It's not a book, which covers all the waterfalls in NY. It doesn't cover even 1/50s of the waterfalls in NY. For that you need to go to the web sites (including the ones made by the authors of this book) and/or buy Scott E. Brown's "New York Waterfalls: A Guide for Hikers and Photographers". This book's goal is to show only the main waterfalls of the state and provide their photos and good descriptions. Each photo covers the full page and is amazing. One can learn how to photograph falls from them! Highly recommend!
Decent photos and good descriptions of the falls. Many of the photos were taken during periods of low water so were not as appealing but I think the purpose of the book is not to entertain you but to help you go out and see them for yourself. Maps are helpful for general locations but not so much for exact locations. There are specific directions but personally I find a small detailed map to be helpful.Something I didn't like or understand is that they broke up the state into 6 regions but only covered 5 of them.
Great book; what a nice way to see various falls in NYS; who knew there were so many,It makes a great armchair travel log or it can be used a a trip planning book.Photos are great; that is; beautiful.The description are very helpful as well. The descriptions give good directs ( I hope) to locating each fall by car and then gives detailed information about how long of a walk or hike it would be from parking spot to the actual falls.Worth the money. Could be a good "coffee table" book over the "holidays". Our local library featured it and I'm glad they did.
I like the book is separated by geographic area. I don’t like that some great waterfalls are left out. This is definitely for informational use and it’s not a coffee table book.
Wonderful book. It includes some old photos which show what some of the falls looked like around 1900, but not today. The photo on the cover shows the walkways through Watkins Glen; my grandfather did the survey work to design those walkways.
I have nothing bad to say about this book except I wish everything was written and laid out like this - ie hiking trails. It has just enough of the important history, a full page photo, maps, walking times, general waterfall information and breaks it out into regions instead of alphabetical so you can easily assess what's in the area without a lot of flipping around. Love love love it! In fact I had to buy another one because my visiting friend stole my copy ;)

I have never been disappointed in any of the Jack Reacher series. This one is no exception. I've read it twice (I had run out of new material) and found it as intriguing the second time around.Jack is drawn into a kidnapping by simply sitting and drinking a cup of espresso while enjoying the sounds of New York. He sees someone leave a car unattended in front of a fire hydrant, sees another man take the car and leave. Not so mysterious, right? But wait, this act leads to some very distinctly mysterious happenings, A mercenary, Edward Lane, wants to hire him to find his wife, Kate, and stepdaughter, Jade, who have been kidnapped. Several million dollars later, which Lane pays without blinking an eye, Reacher feels something else is going on. Something is "off."The journey takes him and his new temporary partner, Pauling, an ex-FBI agent-turned-PI down a twisted path of deceit, torture, and death. Almost too late, Jack realizes what is really going on and---well, read it. You won't be disappointed.
If there is a moral to this story, it is that if you are a bad guy – really bad – it would behoove you not to hire Reacher to help you; eventually he will turn his laser-like, penetrating attention on you. Strangely enough, Reacher is in a café one evening on a busy street in NYC and just happens to observe a man cross the street and drive away an illegally parked car. Big deal, but the next day he is in the same café and is approached by an ex-military type wanting to know if he had observed said event. Soon he is meeting Edward Lane, the head of a band of mercenary soldiers, who claims that the car held ransom money, payment to kidnappers of his dazzling wife and young daughter. Well, of course, since Reacher is an investigator extraordinaire, he agrees to help Lane, something that Lane probably wishes never happened.Reacher knows nothing about Lane, but soon he happens to meet the sister of Lane’s first wife, Anne, now deceased, and an ex-FBI agent Lauren Paulding, who investigated Anne’s disappearance. A troublesome picture of Lane begins to emerge, especially his ruthlessness. Now Reacher is on full alert; he enlists Pauling in his search for the kidnappers but wonders what Lane is hiding. Eventually, after sorting through the disconnects, of all places, the case leads to a farm outside London.As usual the story is fast-moving and compelling. Of course, Reacher uses his immense physical skills to advantage, but it is his mind that gives him the ultimate advantage over his opponents, which generally means surviving the extremely dangerous situations in which he repeatedly finds himself. As per his custom, Reacher is back on the road with his toothbrush only hours after righting the wrongs that are eventually revealed.
From the first page to the last, this exciting adventure grabs you and doesn’t let up. Even if you are unfamiliar with other Jack Reacher stories, you quickly immerse yourself into the characters from the first page. I found it extremely difficult to put the book down until the end. If you love action- packed mystery, intrigue, and just plain great writing, this is the book for you. The crime, of course, is unthinkable. How could anyone do such a thing. You want revenge along with the heroes. I highly recommend this well written story. Just a note, I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Looking forward to going back and reading other books by this very talented author.
If you don't know Jack Reacher you should. Like other classic and slightly eccentric hero's, he lives by a basic code that fights for those in troubles that take both a keen investigative mind and a fearless pursuit of practical justice that will not be denied. The former MP has his own no nonsense way of attacking the problem.... and the bad guys...that will have you looking for ways to find some space and time to read to see what Jack will do next to solve the book's current dilemma. An enjoyable and well paced book that will leave you wanting to read more books in the series.
I think I've read most or all of this series, however, I must have missed this one along the way. Too bad, it's really good. A departure from the usual, it has less action and more mystery than most. Reacher is offered an outrageous amount of money to solve a kidnapping and hopefully rescue the victims. The twist to the plot was fairly easy to figure out, but for me that didn't ruin the story. Lee Child is such a good writer and his characters are so well drawn that even having guessed the outcome, I was still spellbound by the way it played out. You can't go wrong reading any Jack Reacher adventure. To my mind he is one of the best fiction heroes I've ever encountered.
Lately I have become quite a fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels. I have read quite a few of Jack Reacher novels and I just finished reading “The Hard Way†and found it to be one hell of a good action novel. This 477 page thriller just kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. In this fantastic novel Jack Reacher is in New York enjoying his favorite drink Coffee at an outside café. If you have read any Jack Reacher novels you know that trouble just seems to find him and this thriller is no exception.This page turning adventure starts out as a kidnapping but things turn out to be much more complicated. Jack never disappoints in his ability to figure out the deadly pieces of a crime puzzle. Edward Lane is a wealthy ex-military guy who has his own private army made out of experienced ex-special force people. One of the many reasons I like the Jack Reacher character is his sense of justice against pure evil people. I never like to give away too much and spoil it for the reader. If you are a Jack Reacher fan this is a must read novel that is full of twists and turns which will keep you turning the pages.A fantastic read.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J.
