I have never been disappointed in any of the Jack Reacher series. This one is no exception. I've read it twice (I had run out of new material) and found it as intriguing the second time around.Jack is drawn into a kidnapping by simply sitting and drinking a cup of espresso while enjoying the sounds of New York. He sees someone leave a car unattended in front of a fire hydrant, sees another man take the car and leave. Not so mysterious, right? But wait, this act leads to some very distinctly mysterious happenings, A mercenary, Edward Lane, wants to hire him to find his wife, Kate, and stepdaughter, Jade, who have been kidnapped. Several million dollars later, which Lane pays without blinking an eye, Reacher feels something else is going on. Something is "off."The journey takes him and his new temporary partner, Pauling, an ex-FBI agent-turned-PI down a twisted path of deceit, torture, and death. Almost too late, Jack realizes what is really going on and---well, read it. You won't be disappointed.
If there is a moral to this story, it is that if you are a bad guy – really bad – it would behoove you not to hire Reacher to help you; eventually he will turn his laser-like, penetrating attention on you. Strangely enough, Reacher is in a café one evening on a busy street in NYC and just happens to observe a man cross the street and drive away an illegally parked car. Big deal, but the next day he is in the same café and is approached by an ex-military type wanting to know if he had observed said event. Soon he is meeting Edward Lane, the head of a band of mercenary soldiers, who claims that the car held ransom money, payment to kidnappers of his dazzling wife and young daughter. Well, of course, since Reacher is an investigator extraordinaire, he agrees to help Lane, something that Lane probably wishes never happened.Reacher knows nothing about Lane, but soon he happens to meet the sister of Lane’s first wife, Anne, now deceased, and an ex-FBI agent Lauren Paulding, who investigated Anne’s disappearance. A troublesome picture of Lane begins to emerge, especially his ruthlessness. Now Reacher is on full alert; he enlists Pauling in his search for the kidnappers but wonders what Lane is hiding. Eventually, after sorting through the disconnects, of all places, the case leads to a farm outside London.As usual the story is fast-moving and compelling. Of course, Reacher uses his immense physical skills to advantage, but it is his mind that gives him the ultimate advantage over his opponents, which generally means surviving the extremely dangerous situations in which he repeatedly finds himself. As per his custom, Reacher is back on the road with his toothbrush only hours after righting the wrongs that are eventually revealed.
From the first page to the last, this exciting adventure grabs you and doesn’t let up. Even if you are unfamiliar with other Jack Reacher stories, you quickly immerse yourself into the characters from the first page. I found it extremely difficult to put the book down until the end. If you love action- packed mystery, intrigue, and just plain great writing, this is the book for you. The crime, of course, is unthinkable. How could anyone do such a thing. You want revenge along with the heroes. I highly recommend this well written story. Just a note, I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Looking forward to going back and reading other books by this very talented author.
If you don't know Jack Reacher you should. Like other classic and slightly eccentric hero's, he lives by a basic code that fights for those in troubles that take both a keen investigative mind and a fearless pursuit of practical justice that will not be denied. The former MP has his own no nonsense way of attacking the problem.... and the bad guys...that will have you looking for ways to find some space and time to read to see what Jack will do next to solve the book's current dilemma. An enjoyable and well paced book that will leave you wanting to read more books in the series.
I think I've read most or all of this series, however, I must have missed this one along the way. Too bad, it's really good. A departure from the usual, it has less action and more mystery than most. Reacher is offered an outrageous amount of money to solve a kidnapping and hopefully rescue the victims. The twist to the plot was fairly easy to figure out, but for me that didn't ruin the story. Lee Child is such a good writer and his characters are so well drawn that even having guessed the outcome, I was still spellbound by the way it played out. You can't go wrong reading any Jack Reacher adventure. To my mind he is one of the best fiction heroes I've ever encountered.
Lately I have become quite a fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels. I have read quite a few of Jack Reacher novels and I just finished reading “The Hard Way†and found it to be one hell of a good action novel. This 477 page thriller just kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. In this fantastic novel Jack Reacher is in New York enjoying his favorite drink Coffee at an outside café. If you have read any Jack Reacher novels you know that trouble just seems to find him and this thriller is no exception.This page turning adventure starts out as a kidnapping but things turn out to be much more complicated. Jack never disappoints in his ability to figure out the deadly pieces of a crime puzzle. Edward Lane is a wealthy ex-military guy who has his own private army made out of experienced ex-special force people. One of the many reasons I like the Jack Reacher character is his sense of justice against pure evil people. I never like to give away too much and spoil it for the reader. If you are a Jack Reacher fan this is a must read novel that is full of twists and turns which will keep you turning the pages.A fantastic read.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Love this cookbook! I’ve been a vegetarian for eight years but have recently felt like I’m in a recipe slump. This cookbook supplied me with plenty of simple, fast, and most importantly healthy recipes to add to my arsenal. As a vegetarian it’s easy to fall into the rut of just eating lots of carbs and cheese (ie: quesadillas everyday...) and a lot of vegetarian cookbooks tend to have complicated recipes with tons of ingredients. Not this one! Love it for my busy family.
90% of the ingredients are in my house! This is huge to me. Simple recipes that sound amazing. Books like this give me thoughts on mixibg items I might have not tried. Thanks Elizabeth💘
I looked through this book on vacation. I can’t wait to try these recipes . The only thing that I would change is that she uses canned beans. I would like to have the recipes with home cooked beans....I can adjust but it would have been nice.
This cookbook is amazing. I'm downright lazy when it comes to cooking, and the recipes in this cookbook feel like they were made for me. I love how simple every thing is, yet so delicious and flavorful. Love that most of the recipes can be altered to be gluten free or vegetarian. This book has given me confidence to get back in the kitchen and try new things - that are surprisingly easy.
The thing that surprised and please me most about this book is how many of the ingredients I already stock, so I don't need a special trip to the store for packets of things I may never finish. The small amounts of ingredients for many of the recipes is great and means I'll be trying some recipes I would usually skip over. And the calorie counts are good. There are no photos but the recipes are straightforward enough to envision.
I bought this cookbook over a month ago and have been meal prepping with it ever since. The recipes are delicious and creative but also very practicable from a time and cost perspective. I eat mostly vegetarian at home, so this cookbook gives me many options. I love it!
Loved! Loved! LOVED this book! So simple and easy to read. I'm not much of a cook, but I feel as though not only can I cook up some great meals, but I understand more what ingredients / servings will be best for me as a vegetarian. I can't thank Elizabeth enough for her simple and easy style.

Should the publisher go ahead and publish the book anyway? Should we still buy and read the book? Should we still respect the author?This is precisely what happens with Mamet's "On Directing Film."Somehow, in this book, Mamet thinks that his skill as a dramatic writer makes him a de facto authority on film, directing, and acting--three disciplines of which he is, to varying degrees, shamefully ignorant.The book is not only unaware of its own ignorance, it is pompous and often cursorily written, as if Mamet had just vomited and was half-passed out in the toilet stall of some dingy New York club as he was scribbling down the words."Perhaps your task as a designer of shots is, after a point, that of a decorator, quite frankly," says our sage of cinema (74)."In the old cartoons, the artists realized the essence of the theory of montage, which is that they could do whatever the heck they wanted," says our esteemed lecturer (80).This book not only makes Mamet look bad, it makes the Columbia Film School look foolish for propping Mamet up as an expert and allowing him to teach classes in something he knows next to nothing about. I felt sorry for the poor students in the book's dialogues. They had paid tens of thousands in tuition to attend a prestigious university and gain pearls of wisdom into the cinematic art only to have this novice hack trot around and infect their naive minds with wildly distorted half-truths.I was fully ready to give this book a one star and leave it at that, but, as foul as parts of the book are, Mamet is still a skilled dramatist and there are parts that do shine. Mamet's always trying to simplify and get to the essence of things and, in spite of his pomposity and ignorance, he does manage to say some really important things about directing film that help put things into perspective and make the practical work of directing clear and manageable. In fact, if all the tripe were gutted from the book, I might say this is one of the most helpful manuals on directing I've ever read.
A few years ago I married a scoundrel--a delusional little man who had taken two whole classes one year at a presigious film school before announcing to the world that he was the next Steven Spielberg, who then spent the next twenty years refusing to get a job because filmmaking was his alleged "destiny." As it turned out, I really was his muse; obsessed with real-life cable crime dramas about psycho brides who kill their unsuspecting, purely innocent husbands, his family would later tell me, he had hoped that he could get me to snap and become the "write what you know" foil in the horror movie of the century, to gain the wealth, adulation and admiration he so richly deserved. In the years since our not-so-amicable divorce, I've been in real film school, taking classes and seminars wherever I can, and working every peon job on every set that will have me because, in a weird twist of life's true horror, I actually do want to make films, and I want to make them well.David Mamet is one of the great filmmakers that my Peter Pan wanted to pose as, but in reading this book I have learned that everything I had been told about the science of Mamet's method was completely false. Either Dopey had a far poorer grasp on reading (and watching) comprehension than I ever realised, or he just made it up as he went along. In truth, I learned in reading this book that Film Directing is much more creative and far less pretentious than I'd been led to believe, and this lecture series made me wish that I had chosen Columbia instead of Boise State way back when these classes were first taught.David Mamet's positive view that the film director is a "Dionysian extention of the screenwriter" makes the prospect much less dull. His philosophy about "letting the story evolve," how that happens, and allowing the subconcious mind to lead shot sequences and angles is brilliant. But his final advice to "stick to the channel, it's marked," is what makes this series of lessons timeless. All of the classes I have taken have left me feeling daunted, worried about the future direction of my path, losing focus in the minutiae of technicality, camera choices, light angles...resisting the urge to pummel bad actors. But then there is the clearheaded, short-and-sweet teaching of Mamet to follow first principles, plotting a sure course, summed up with:"The more time you have invested, and the more of yourself you have invested in the plan, the more secure you will feel in the face of terror, loneliness, or the unfeeling or ignorant comments of those from whom you are asking a whole bunch of money or indulgence."This book is truly a series of peptalks from a great and humble mentor, and is going into my war chest to be referred back to whenever I need to find the center again. It's so much more sensible than the ramblings of the idiot I married.
