Great read. Dr. Pipas makes this book readable for the layperson by using many personal anecdotes and references to follow up on. Great trip to self-improvement for all walks of life.
As an avid Jon Kabit-Zinn reader, I eagerly purchased and read Dr. Florio Pipas' book--and I loved it. It has relatable, candid, practical case studies that are immediately useful. Not only am I putting her ideas into practice on a daily basis, but friends and colleagues are doing the same with great pleasure and success. This book is full of both novel ideas and a great deal of common sense--all of which is achievable. Her content and delivery make this book an ideal purchase for oneself or a friend. This book is now out of print except for the Kindle edition, which is what I bought. It's rather outdated because it deals with conflicts in the Catholic Church when Pope John Paul was still alive; however, many Catholics still give devotion to Mary, so it's worth reading to understand where they are coming from.Dr. White traces the development of Marian doctrine through the centuries up to where the Catholic Church is today. As other reviewers have said, he quotes extensively from Catholic theologians and popes. This is intentional, as most people reading the book have never read this stuff (I know I hadn't!). This is info Protestants should know. We should not be Protestant as a matter of taste or how we were raised, but due to a conviction that the Catholic Church is wrong, and why we believe they are wrong. That is the type of book this is - helping one to become a Protestant of conviction.Ok, some gripes about the Kindle edition.1) The text is left AND right justified, making for some lines that have very spaced out text.2) Biggest gripe - the footnotes notations do NOT link to the footnotes at the back of the book, and the footnotes take up a full 10% of the book. Not being able to read them as you are reading the book is not helpful as they are rather important. Dr. White has said many times that you miss a lot of you don't read the footnotes in his books. I read the footnotes when I got that far, but they make a lot more sense than if you read them as you are reading the book.3) The book does not have chapter navigation, making it impossible to skip to the end to read a footnote, then back to where you were. The ONLY way to navigate the book is page by page.4) Weird stuff such as where there was obviously a line break in the printed text, such as a hyphenated word; the word is still hyphenated, even though there is no such thing as hyphenated line breaks in Kindle. It's a bit distracting.5) No typeface or line spacing options for this book. The options are text size, words per line, text to speech, and screen rotation.
James R. White's "Mary - Another Redeemer" (1998) is a short (146 pages) Evangelical response to the groundswell within Roman Catholicism to recognize Mary as "Coredemptrix," or Co-Redeemer with Jesus Christ. This book was written during the papacy of John Paul II who was totally dedicated to Mary - his official Latin motto "Totus tuus sum, Maria," translates as "Mary, I am completely yours." Wojtyla was a strong advocate of formally recognizing Mary as Co-Reedmer. But sixteen years later Mary's supporters are still waiting. As White points out, some of the Catholic hierarchy hesitate to formally proclaim this belief as dogma because they realize it will dampen efforts to gather in the "separated brethren." Although the doctrine is not yet official, for all intents and purposes Mary is recognized as Christ's Co-Reedemer within Catholicism.How did Catholics come to worship Mary when there is absolutely no Biblical basis? White briefly reviews the history of the rise of Mariolatry and compares the simple Biblical view of Mary to the idolotrous Marian extrapolations invented by Rome. It's somewhat puzzling that White refrains from any mention of the development of Mary worship as an accommodation to pagan mother goddess worship (Asherah, Isis, Ishtar, Hera, Venus, Pachamama, etc.), which was clearly the case.Christians will be amazed and saddened by Rome's transformation of Mary from a sinner in need of the Savior, as we all are, to the sinless Queen of Heaven, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Mother of God, Holy Mother, Holy Virgin, Coredemptrix, Mediatrix, and Advocate. Catholics protest that they don't deify Mary but their practices and attitudes prove otherwise. This book was written as a wake up call to Evangelicals who are increasingly embracing Rome, as exemplified by Chuck Colson's influential "Evangelicals and Catholics Together" statement in 1994.I'm so grateful that I was redeemed by God's grace through faith in Christ Jesus alone. I pray many Catholics will leave the religious ritualism and legalism of their church and accept Jesus. Christ came to save sinners, not the religious self-righteous who believe they can earn heaven by receiving the Catholic "sacraments" and by obeying the Ten Commandments. "Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God." - Galatians 3:11Biblical perspective on Mary: "As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." Luke 11:27 & 28
James White does a fine job of letting the Catholic Church's own word's speak for themselves to demonstrate the excesses of the Marian doctrines. The only criticism I would lodge is that the author could have gone into more depth regarding the biblical teachings for those who are not as familiar with the Bible or who are without as solid a foundation in church history and Protestant doctrine, but the lack of in-depth background is understandable if his primary audience was scholarly. Definitely an eye opener for those not familiar with Catholic teachings regarding Mary.
Whether or not you are Catholic, as I am not, this will interest you. It shows the lengths of fantasy and fiction the Catholic church is living in. Making Mary a "co-redemtress is not only a stretch but it takes them so far out of bounds of scripture to be ridiculous. These people will do anything to hang on to power and reach even if it means being absurd. They need to be de-programmed.
I am not Catholic, not a believer at all in fact, but I was interested enough in the difference between Protestant beliefs and Catholic beliefs to research a bit about the differences in dogma and doctrine. It is all totally unnecessary to me, however i see that many many people are ruled by religious belief and thus lifestyle. I had no idea the Catholic faith was so caught up in the persona of Mary; it is a strangeness to me. An interesting read for the presentation of how others perceive life.

I was hoping the book would have more information on the European river cruises. It had a few pages, and no information about the cities that the river cruises stop at. The book didn't even mention the Viking Cruise company, which is the most popular line in that business. The book is obviously out of date.
Tons of information here! Now my goal is to work my way through all of these locations!
It wasn't very helpful because it missed very important points about arrivals.
Expected more about RIVER CRUISES, not all cruises. Would not have purchased if I had found it at a store and was able to actually look at it.
Good book with lots of useful details about each cruise line and ship or class of ships. Have not gotten to description of individual ports but expect that section to very useful as well.

I want to thank Lauren S. for this wonderful gift to our library and with it her advice that it is a must read for young adults. I wholeheartedly concur; in 68 poems in this spare, yet piercing novel in verse, the author was scheduled to speak at Matthew Shepard's college and found out just before about the savage beating this young man received. Leslea Newman kept her keynote engagement and spoke and wept at the sheer horror of this hate crime toward an innocent victim who succumbs to death 5 days later. Newman has taken many elements of Matthew Shepard's last hours and imagined what may have been; the road, the fence he was lashed to, the biker, the murderers, the pistol, the deer and so much more. This book is a tribute to Matthew Shepard who died as a result of a hate crime at the hands of gay haters. This book is also a history lesson that every child, young adult and reader needs to explore because in the reading of this book, you will be changed. This book needs to be read by everyone.I especially gained even more knowledge through the author's introduction, her epilogue, her afterword, notes, explanation of poetic forms and resources. Newman brings sympathy, anger, sorrow, and compassion to each and every word in this book. Highly recommended.
I love this one. I am a visual artist and do not express myself with words very well. That's one of the reasons I enjoy reading is finding beauty in words and the storytelling. The foreshadowing and mood setting with word choice. This is a different but beautiful art form. Poetry with iambic pentameter and rhyme schemes that I cannot figure out make it hard for me to get the beauty of the roll, the stops of the word. Concrete poems I understand, dual voice poems check, Haikus gotcha. But when it is important to a verse novel for me to understand the rhyming pattern and the emphasis of words, I feel like I lose some of the beauty reading gives me since I miss out on emphasis that I can later going back understand was foreshadowing to set the mood.This book uses multiple types of poetry to tell basically a single paige point of view of someone or something that was present of affected by this hate crime. And while some do have the elements I don't like, the author has given an index of the poems numbered and described how the poem works in its place and what kind of poem it is. I recommend waiting till the end to look for ones you don't understand. It might breakup the thoughts and flows between poems.So, this verse novel gives the events of a tragic murder of a gay boy named Matthew Shepard. I begins before he is killed, what he is thinking about in the club, when he is beaten and tied to a fencepost and ultimately dies. Multiple viewpoints are given throughout the book. What the stars saw, what the mothers of others felt for their sons. The fence that so sadly had to hold him up... And the mourning and fall out from a murder of hate. The sentencing, the hate-groups that agree...It's deeply moving. interweaving different stories like yarn into a coherent start to finish book of what happened that night to the aftermath for the boy, his family, his killers, the community, and the LGBTQ community.
Newman's diary of poems runs up and down the dial of viewpoints and emotions telling the feeling of many people -- and some other beings and non-beings as well -- surrounding the torture and murder of Matthew Shepard, the young gay student. But here's the deal: These poem spring out of horror, and I would never have purchased the book had I not had the opportunity to look through it first (a friend's copy). One finishes the collection (which can also be read piecemeal) feeling more encouraged and empowered than horrified. Bravo to Newman for accomplishing the impossible and demonstrating how something beautiful can come out of something unspeakable.
Wow. I almost wish I was still teaching so I could use this book during Poetry Month. Not only has Newman written some beautiful poems, but she also used a wide variety of poetic forms and styles. Wow. This book was so amazingly excellent. I'm undecided about whether I should donate this book so others can share in it, or if I should just keep it under my pillow.
I haven't had a chance to read the book, but Leslea Newman visited my college and did a reading from this book. I was lucky enough to have her sign my copy. It was a very moving book and the imagery is incredible. I highly recommend the book.
As someone who does not regularly enjoy poetry outside the kinds of Shel Silverstein, I was hesitant to read October Mourning. However, after reading just the first entry I was blown away. Needless to say I finished it in one sitting and since have returned time and time again to re-examine my favorite poems. Newman does an incredible job taking on different perspectives and it raises the book to another level of creativity and effectiveness. As someone who was very young at the time of Matthew Shepard's death after reading October Mourning I was ashamed I had never heard of him. Everyone needs to read this book, whether you like poetry or not, and especially if you do not know Matthew Shepard's story- it is a must!!!
This is so hard to read. The poetry is wonderful. It is very well written and edited, but the emotion that surrounds Mr. Shepherd's death is so strong that it can only be read a few pages at a time. One must have tissues present to read!
I bought this product for a theatre project and it one of the greatest books I've ever read related to LGBT issues. It's thoughful, artistic, and lists it's resources in full so the reader can do plenty of independent study.
