This is Johns insight into his studio work (including his own early attempts at becoming a singer) with many of the greatest bands of that era. The book has the feel of the era ("Johnny McLaughlin was so cool in his sharkskin suit and pencil tie with a button down shirt. He would lean on the pillar on the left side of the stage, barely moving, while playing the most incredible guitar.") but at several important points in his reminisces Johns glosses over, or judiciously prunes (for many readers including me) the seemingly important points of some subject, leaving them out altogether. Presumably it's because he's talking about friends and/or he's doing the British thing of being polite to a fault. And that's too bad because at some points you want him to keep on describing the action, but good manners and/or modesty seems to prevail. Because I'm from that era and would look for Johns' name on the back of an LP as an indication of how good it might be, I think (for nostalgia's sake) this book floats somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars". But to each his own.But to his credit Johns does write in some depth about the era in general--from meeting Ian Stewart and recording the Rolling Stones very early on, to meeting both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page at the start of their respective careers--and working in the studio with many of the best musicians of the period, but without resorting to gossip. Johns' remembrances (taken from his diaries) like this of George Harrison-- "So we waited for everyone to leave and he went out into the empty studio and played "Something in the Way She Moves"...." He came into the control room, and after having it played back to him, he asked what I thought of it, as he seemed unsure."--is about as personal as the book gets as far as any deep depth. But the many sessions he produced and the many great albums we all still hold up as pinnacles of great rock music give the book a feel of those days when the music was new and exciting. From his work on the Steve Miller Band album "Children of the Future" to working with The Eagles, and everyone else, the book brings up good memories of those times. He also talks about the music business in his era as compared to the present and how things have changed, and not all for the better. But if you're looking for information on how he got the sound he wanted, Johns doesn't dwell on the technicalities of his work.But the day to day workings in the studio ("The rest of March 1971 was taken up with starting and completing the second album with McGuiness Flint and recording The Stones live in concert...", and "I went back in the studio with The Who to complete "The Who By Numbers" at Shepperton Studios.") with all the many bands does have the flavor of those heady times. This book isn't supposed to be a "tell all" type of read. He doesn't dwell on or go into the negative aspects of working with the many bands he's produced. This is Johns' observations of what went on in his life as a top studio producer, and being "straight" while most everyone else was under the influence of various substances means that he writes honestly (but not to deeply) without being judgmental. And on that point the book succeeds. Yes, at times I wish Johns had included a bit more about certain events, but for whatever reason he chose not to. And for a book about (basically) his job as a producer, Johns succeeds pretty well."The day I don't learn something in the recording studio is the day I'm done." Glyn Johns.So if you're looking for some deep secrets to emerge or some mysteries to be brought into the light, this isn't the book. But if you want a look inside at working under pressure with some of the most egotistical artists of the era, with Johns trying to keep things moving in the right direction, this book will be of some interest.
Glyn Johns worked with some of the greatest musicians of all time--The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and on and on. So, it is very disappointing that his book didn't contain many interesting and illuminating stories about them. The book reads like an itinerary. I did this, then I did that, then I worked with _____. The man is just not a storyteller. I didn't feel like I knew/understood any of the people better after reading his book. Also, he seems to think an inordinate number of people are jerks and hard to work with--which makes me wonder about him. He didn't come across as very likeable. However, I have read books by people who weren't likeable that were still very good books. This wasn't one of them. It's just okay, at best.
Johns shares many entertaining stories about his life in the recording studio helping engineer and produce some of the most legendary albums of all time. He does a fine job of re-creating many of these moments, and does so without fawning all over the artists he has been fortunate enough to work with.Reading this book has inspired me to seek out several albums he recorded in the 60’s and 70’s, based on his recollection of completing these records.I only wish Johns had gone into more detail about some of the sessions — for example, working with The Rolling Stones on Sticky Fingers. I was not expecting him to share gossip about these sessions but I would have liked more detail about assembling these albums. All in all this is a really enjoyable book and I recommend it.
I was so looking forward to this book and was so extremely disappointed. He really needed an editor and a lot more time to pull this together. It's a hastily written rambling unstructured diary.It's unfortunate that it jumps around so much and never focuses on any one artist or album for very long. I was hoping to get a behind the scenes understanding of how these great albums that he engineered or produced came about but that never happened. I also got the feeling that he takes a lot more credit for things that he had very little to do with.
I read this book at a time when I was very interested in the production of music. It turned out to be the ideal story to delve into as the author's musical experience encompasses working with practically all the classic rock bands in the heyday of the 60's and 70's. What particularly impressed me was the sheer creativity and will to experiment whilst working with artists of such calibre and raw talent. There is much emphasis on his work with the Rolling Stones with whom he collaborated extensively. His personal life included some hair-raising adventures whilst travelling constantly and these certainly add to the piquant feel of his experience. One gets a real feel of the rock and roll world with its thrills, excesses and downers and all is told in a very straightforward manner. A highly informative read on an exciting aspect of music making during a truly legendary era.
He writes like a sound engineer, all business anddetail which makes the book ultimately a failure. You could pick this up in a book store, scan it for 20 minutes and know all you need to about this rather bland memoir. Better still, listen to the music. The man has been involved in some amazing projects, but you’ll be pretty bored by 1/2 way through his tale since it’s just a rehash of recording sessions and dates with “lovely people†which could have been written on a single page in the form of a list- which you can find at the end.

The upside is they actually make them. They are great underwater. It's nice to have something compact to take with you.Downside they have very limited space. The maps are pretty general. They don't show depth contours. In the case of this card they didn't even name the sites. The rear side is fish identification. Those pictures are so small you can barely ID anything. Beyond that they use the same chart for the Bahamas and Roatan. I think that part is pretty useless. The map shows you dive site locations. The one we have for Roatan names the sites too. The price is really great. We buy them for all the places we go. To be better they would need to be folded to have twice the resolution on the fish ID, limit it to the fish at a location, name the sites on all maps, and put in water depth contour lines.
card is like a small dive card my eyes cant read print and a few location names no locations realy, its ok but not worth the money$$

This is a mixed bag. If you're an experienced Agilist with no documentation or training experience, perhaps 20% of this book is useful to you. If you're experienced in documentation and training and no agile, 70% of it will be useful. To someone who doesn't care it'll be useless, but they probably weren't interested.There's a lot of smart stuff here, but its organized in small chunks and doesn't give a coherent picture of a pretty good idea - how to use Agile methods in training and documentation. For me, an experienced Agilist, it was a slog through things I recognized, combined with "woah" moments that surprised me (such as adapting sprints to rush-draft documentation).I'd read a bit of the sample to see if it'll help you. It's heart's in the right place, but it's a bit of a wandering book.
After watching some video's online of the LLAMA method to instructional design project management, I was expecting this book to be LLAMA and not Agile. With the exception of a few sentences, nothing is in this book that you can't get from a 10min YouTube video on Agile. Most pages are one sentence long with not explanation. Or a single quote.I guess in the iterative design of book writing, this would be considered a transcription of what was captured on topics to cover in a book someday. This is more like a thought a day calendar than a book. You can read in it about 10min it is seriously that short on words.I'm not sure on the purpose of this book, I found no value in it. Printing was all messed up to, but that's on the print house not the author. Granted it was $12 but it's going to have to get returned.

A fairly basic introduction to the art of Jazz dance. Its about as good as can be expected from a book to explain the form and motion of Jazz dance. It covers a general history of the evolution of jazz dance and how it has been influenced and influences other forms of dance and culture. The techniques in the book are well described and are easy enough to follow with the illustrations provided. I found the section on proper eating and possible eating disorders of particular interest considering that it is a problem within the dance community. It also goes into detail on muscle exhaustion and the processes by which can tone muscles and increase ones stretching ability. I must note that the resale value on the item through Amazon it actually quite good so I would recommend checking that out at the end of your course.
This is excellent for students as well as teachers. It goes through very detailed warmups, across the floor exercises and simple combinations. The steps are explained and illustrated. It's always focused on correct body placement and technique.
Although I found some minor errors in the book, overall it does a good job giving simple explanations of jazz dance terminology and moves and shows pictures. It was required for my class and it's been helpful in explaining how to perform moves in simple terms.
Despite the silly cover, this book has proven useful to my personal study of dance. The explanations are clear and diagrams are super helpful.

What an excellent book. I have really enjoyed this book as a school book and just to plan look at.
This book was way expensive for what it was. Even with the help of Amazon I was shocked at the price. It was not this booksellers fault the price was so high. I cant see paying gold prices for a dance class book. Taking food off the table is a bad trade off.
I was required to get this book because I am a college dance minor. Basically, if you've been dancing your whole life, it's everything you already know about dance in a written out form. If that's what you need to improve your dancing go ahead, but other than that it's nothing too special.

About the Author
Linda Bloomfield has been involved with pottery since 1973, although her career path led her to train as a materials scientist. She received a BSc in Engineering Science and a PhD in Materials Science from Warwick University, UK. After stints as a visiting scholar at MIT and as researcher in Tsukuba, Japan and London, she set up her current studio in London in 2001. Since 2003 she has been selling through galleries across the UK and internationally, and her tableware is stocked by Liberty and David Mellor. She is a frequent contributor to Ceramic Review and is the author of two previous books, Colour in Glazes (Bloomsbury, 2011) and Contemporary Tableware (Bloomsbury, 2013).

I am a full-time ceramics instructor at a community college. I bought this book, as I often do, to add to my library of materials. The book just arrived today, and flipping through it I instantly realized it is a complete waste of money. The glazes are insipid and common at best- equal or better glazes can be found online for free. Also, many recipes use toxic materials. They rely heavily on barium for the mid-range glazes, which is the temperature I most often use at the college, and I can't believe I actually found LEAD bisilicate in a book published THIS YEAR!!! The introductory instruction is the most basic glazing techniques taught in a beginning level course, and then there is a very brief glaze theory section followed by lots of unappealing, old news recipes. This book is even worse than "The Potter's Book of Glaze Recipes" by Cooper. I would recommend that you spend your money on a more useful book like the Ceramic Arts Series "Cone 5-6 Glazes" instead.
I am presently testing several of these glazes. There are even some interesting raku glazes. Linda

This book is an expensive way to gather a few recipes with multiple pages of slight variations of oxides for color modifications. It includes materials that are not wise choices for a studio potter such as lead frit and barium. Don't waste your money on this book.
This book was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be! Cover to cover it's filled with highly insightful information about glazes! I am thrilled to add this book to my studio collection and will certainly reference it often for recipes, as well as ideas and inspiration! The Handbook of Glaze Recipes is brilliantly designed as a spiral-bound book making it the perfect companion in the studio without the worry of a cracking spine from all of the use it's sure to see.There are numerous other qualities about this book that make it an instant favorite: The book begins with a basic overview of what makes a glaze a glaze, common glaze problems (and their solutions!), popular oxides and their results under different atmospheric environments, and glaze application techniques for a variety of surfaces. All of that helpful information is within the first 25 pages or so, leaving the rest of the book for recipe after recipe! The recipes are divided logically by cone firing temperature making the book very easy to navigate for your particular firing range. Each recipe features a test tile of the glaze next to the glaze formula on a specified clay type giving the reader a clear visual representation of the glaze's surface characteristics, color, and opacity, instead of a wordy description of what the glaze will look like, as many other books have done in the past.The helpful test tile displays next to each formula made selecting recipes a breeze, and within the first hour of owning the book I was mixing up tests for my next firing. Unlike other books that call for a lengthy list of obscure materials most of the recipes in The Handbook of Glaze Recipes are possible to create with a basic material inventory, which I really appreciate because I can use the same materials for several glazes without ending up with leftover materials I'm unlikely to use for anything else. The appendix of the book outlines a UK to US materials conversion chart making this book an equally useful resource in UK and US studios!As another reviewer mentioned there are a few recipes in the book that call for materials I am unlikely to use in my studio, but I appreciate their inclusion in the book nonetheless. Safety and knowledge are the most important tools in the ceramic studio, and I think this is a prime example. A beautiful barium glaze has its place in the ceramic world, and while that may not be on the functional tableware I make, I can still value its exquisitely stony surface, and will simply not make that glaze for my pots. That said, there are hundreds of other glazes in this book that don't call for barium or ingredients you may choose to avoid in your studio. There is such an impressively wide range of glazes in this book!I really enjoyed the direct use of metals and oxides throughout the book as the coloring elements, which is a departure from the commercial stains I generally use. Out of curiosity I made a few of the glazes in the book substituting my commercial stains for the coloring oxides. The results were incredible! What made this especially interesting for me was that by using my stains I was keeping entirely within the palette I've already established for my work, but I was able to create several new surfaces that seamlessly assimilated into my current collection. This book is already one of my favorite new resources and I will be recommending it to every ceramic artists I know! It is definitely a must-have!!!
A nice little starter book for someone like myself who needs a clear and concise introduction to glazes.
