A fairly basic introduction to the art of Jazz dance. Its about as good as can be expected from a book to explain the form and motion of Jazz dance. It covers a general history of the evolution of jazz dance and how it has been influenced and influences other forms of dance and culture. The techniques in the book are well described and are easy enough to follow with the illustrations provided. I found the section on proper eating and possible eating disorders of particular interest considering that it is a problem within the dance community. It also goes into detail on muscle exhaustion and the processes by which can tone muscles and increase ones stretching ability. I must note that the resale value on the item through Amazon it actually quite good so I would recommend checking that out at the end of your course.

This is excellent for students as well as teachers. It goes through very detailed warmups, across the floor exercises and simple combinations. The steps are explained and illustrated. It's always focused on correct body placement and technique.

Although I found some minor errors in the book, overall it does a good job giving simple explanations of jazz dance terminology and moves and shows pictures. It was required for my class and it's been helpful in explaining how to perform moves in simple terms.

Despite the silly cover, this book has proven useful to my personal study of dance. The explanations are clear and diagrams are super helpful.

Excellent

What an excellent book. I have really enjoyed this book as a school book and just to plan look at.

This book was way expensive for what it was. Even with the help of Amazon I was shocked at the price. It was not this booksellers fault the price was so high. I cant see paying gold prices for a dance class book. Taking food off the table is a bad trade off.

I was required to get this book because I am a college dance minor. Basically, if you've been dancing your whole life, it's everything you already know about dance in a written out form. If that's what you need to improve your dancing go ahead, but other than that it's nothing too special.

I am a full-time ceramics instructor at a community college. I bought this book, as I often do, to add to my library of materials. The book just arrived today, and flipping through it I instantly realized it is a complete waste of money. The glazes are insipid and common at best- equal or better glazes can be found online for free. Also, many recipes use toxic materials. They rely heavily on barium for the mid-range glazes, which is the temperature I most often use at the college, and I can't believe I actually found LEAD bisilicate in a book published THIS YEAR!!! The introductory instruction is the most basic glazing techniques taught in a beginning level course, and then there is a very brief glaze theory section followed by lots of unappealing, old news recipes. This book is even worse than "The Potter's Book of Glaze Recipes" by Cooper. I would recommend that you spend your money on a more useful book like the Ceramic Arts Series "Cone 5-6 Glazes" instead.

I am presently testing several of these glazes. There are even some interesting raku glazes. Linda

IT DID NOT FILLED MY SPECTATIONS

This book is an expensive way to gather a few recipes with multiple pages of slight variations of oxides for color modifications. It includes materials that are not wise choices for a studio potter such as lead frit and barium. Don't waste your money on this book.

This book was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be! Cover to cover it's filled with highly insightful information about glazes! I am thrilled to add this book to my studio collection and will certainly reference it often for recipes, as well as ideas and inspiration! The Handbook of Glaze Recipes is brilliantly designed as a spiral-bound book making it the perfect companion in the studio without the worry of a cracking spine from all of the use it's sure to see. There are numerous other qualities about this book that make it an instant favorite: The book begins with a basic overview of what makes a glaze a glaze, common glaze problems (and their solutions!), popular oxides and their results under different atmospheric environments, and glaze application techniques for a variety of surfaces. All of that helpful information is within the first 25 pages or so, leaving the rest of the book for recipe after recipe! The recipes are divided logically by cone firing temperature making the book very easy to navigate for your particular firing range. Each recipe features a test tile of the glaze next to the glaze formula on a specified clay type giving the reader a clear visual representation of the glaze's surface characteristics, color, and opacity, instead of a wordy description of what the glaze will look like, as many other books have done in the past. The helpful test tile displays next to each formula made selecting recipes a breeze, and within the first hour of owning the book I was mixing up tests for my next firing. Unlike other books that call for a lengthy list of obscure materials most of the recipes in The Handbook of Glaze Recipes are possible to create with a basic material inventory, which I really appreciate because I can use the same materials for several glazes without ending up with leftover materials I'm unlikely to use for anything else. The appendix of the book outlines a UK to US materials conversion chart making this book an equally useful resource in UK and US studios! As another reviewer mentioned there are a few recipes in the book that call for materials I am unlikely to use in my studio, but I appreciate their inclusion in the book nonetheless. Safety and knowledge are the most important tools in the ceramic studio, and I think this is a prime example. A beautiful barium glaze has its place in the ceramic world, and while that may not be on the functional tableware I make, I can still value its exquisitely stony surface, and will simply not make that glaze for my pots. That said, there are hundreds of other glazes in this book that don't call for barium or ingredients you may choose to avoid in your studio. There is such an impressively wide range of glazes in this book!I really enjoyed the direct use of metals and oxides throughout the book as the coloring elements, which is a departure from the commercial stains I generally use. Out of curiosity I made a few of the glazes in the book substituting my commercial stains for the coloring oxides. The results were incredible! What made this especially interesting for me was that by using my stains I was keeping entirely within the palette I've already established for my work, but I was able to create several new surfaces that seamlessly assimilated into my current collection. This book is already one of my favorite new resources and I will be recommending it to every ceramic artists I know! It is definitely a must-have!!!

A nice little starter book for someone like myself who needs a clear and concise introduction to glazes.

Book lasted me nearly a month as I'd only read a few chapters each day so as to stretch out my enjoyment factor. For a work of fiction I found it an entirely fascinating account regarding the trials of Moses from his rescue as a babe from the river Nile, testing his mettle against the other spawn of Ramses, challenging Fate as a captain aboard a chariot against the Kingdom of Kush right on up to the climatic scene we all remember from the movie "Ten Commandments" where he kills the Egyptian overseer using only his bare hands. Well-written, a story line you become fully immersed within, characters which become living/breathing entities, an overall excellent read. Wish this author was still alive today, but happy to know he was a prolific writer in his time and fully intend to read many more of his works. Has my fullest recommendation so will end this review with three simple words, 'Get this book!'

This novelized retelling of the prophet raised as a prince is riveting. Mr. Fast opens for us the waning greatness of an ancient nation as seen through the eyes of a foundling slave child, rescued by a princess and raised as her own. We see the world of ancient Egypt through the eyes of the child, the youth, and the man into which he grows. The five stars given to this reflect the quality of the work. The voices are strong, the settings are vivid. Feeling is strong and skilfully invoked in this novel. The author is a master. The singular impediment to a thoroughly satisfying read, and this reflects only the electronic book, is the ever-constant failure of those producing the digitized versions to proofread their work. I am happy reading the lines; I do not wish to have to stop and reinvent them.I highly recommend this book to anyone high school age or above, especially to those of us who enjoy a vacation into the past.

This compelling story about Moses' life while in Egypt until he was a youngish man (30,35, 40 years old??) is well written and interesting. Howard Fast is a known fine writer. Although most of this book is a conjectural story, Howard Fast spent years investigating life in 12-14th century BCE Egypt, which is the time many historians think that Moses lived. I really enjoyed this book and, as a Bible scholar and someone who has studied the Hebrew language and the history of the Jews, I think that Mr. Fast was very thoughtful in his portrayal of Moses' younger life. I am often amused by attempts to enlarge on the stories in the Bible, but in this case I found myself nodding in agreement with Howard's inventiveness. This is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Moses and in the very early history of the people who became the Jews who left Egypt with Moses.

From a story point of view--I'm not a historian so I can't judge it on that basis--this is an excellent novel. It shows the gradual spiritual growth of Moses, first as a youth and finally as a young man. Initially, he's indifferent to the barbaric Egyption culture. But as he ages and participates in the senseless killing of the Kush tribe, whose leader pleaded for peace with both sweet wrods and costly gifts, he grows in sensitivity. He then rejects the Egyption king's arrogance and inhumanity to human beings, especially toward the slaves that he savagely uses to fulfill his egotistical goals of self-glorification.At first Moses thinks the king is his father and the king's sister is his mother. He is in line to become the next king. But he slowly learns the truth, that he is a Jew--no better than the slaves who toil listlessly for the pharoah--and rejects the callous materialism for a life among his own people, notwithstanding its hardships. This is clearly manifest when, unable to bear watching a slave-driver whip an old jewish slave, he punches him to death. This causes a rift between Moses and the king, who then plans to kill Moses. But Moses, with his former slave, Nun, escape to start a completely new life. The action and realization scenes are riveting--it's near impossible to stop reading the book, so well are they written. The evolving relationship between Moses and his angry slave Nun is especially touching, for Nun starts his service by hating and wanting to kill Moses, but he ends up totally loving him and never wanting to give up his company, despite that Moses gives him his freedom. Moses wins his heart by his affection for Nun--seen by Moses not as a slave but as a human being--and this effects the gradual bonding of Nun to Moses. Very touching, indeed. What I did not like about the book was its wordiness--long reflective, inessential, plodding diversions from the story itself. Yes, they allude to Moses and other important characters but they slow the story down, cause a loss in momentum in reader interest, are boring, and create a ho-hum mood. After reading several of them, I began to skip over them and stick to the heart of the story, namely, Moses' inner transformation to goodness.I highly reccommend this book, chiefly because it deals with the early or youthful Moses, of which little is known by the general public. This story would make a GREAT MOVIE. With a great actor, script, and director, it could become classic, perhaps as popular as THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

Howard Fast was one of the twentieth century's most successful and prolific authors. He had the unique talent of making his readers feel that they had moved back in time and were there wherever the action was. His novel Moses, written and published in 1958, was no exception.Fast's friend and WW2 co-worker, author Louis Untermeyer, wrote this brief review: "It is a wonderful work. The setting and the people come to life in the very first pages and the story begins to move before the opening conversation ends. It's a book people will believe in. The perfumes and stinks of Egypt, the lusts and cruelties, the wars and corruptions rise from the pages--and so do the beauties and braveries, the small tendernesses and the large understandings. It is a better book than anything of its genre. It is a book that any author should be proud to have written."I agree. I had previously read a print edition of Fast's "Moses" and enjoyed rereading it in Amazon's ebook version fully as much.

I learned a lot about the life of Moses. Fast develops each character and tells the story through their experiences.

I enjoyed it, thank you!

Sets a standard for historical fiction.

An overall good introduction to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. On the whole, recommended. The style is serious and at the same time easy to read, with light touches here and there. The author has presented the material in the context of a visit to an imaginary Orthodox parish, using descriptions of the building, clergy, and services as take-off points for discussions of main Orthodox beliefs and practices. This reviewer would make only minor points (for not giving it five stars). There are a few errors in citations of Bible verses (wrong verse number, for instance), and some very conservative, traditional Orthodox Christians would object to using the title "Saint" for various individuals in the Catholic West after the separation from the East. Nevertheless, the book can be recommended as a general introduction to eastern Christianity.

I don't say this very often, but this is probably one of the most well written books I have come across lately. Mathewes-Green knows how to inform without being overly pedantic, boring, or losing depth. The occasional bit of humor is also entertaining without losing overall seriousness (despite how corny her jokes may be; I thought most of them were pretty funny). She addresses some important concepts from the Orthodox perspective, as well as the theological differences and positions (East vs. West, baptism, Sunday worship, cultural aspects, etc.). I definitely feel more comfortable visiting the local Orthodox Church now after reading this book

This book is a very good starting point for an inquirer. It dispels and debunks a lot of the common misunderstandings that people of other Christian denominations may have encountered when looking at the Orthodox faith from the outside. It is a very gentle and non threatening...positive work, easy to read and understand. Reading this after attending Divine Liturgy over the years has given me a recognition, richness and understanding of the experience that I did not have previously. Highly recommend to non orthodox friends, family, or people who are just curious...or even to those Orthodox who have never received education about the traditions of the church. Wonderfully done.

This is one of the best crafted books I have read. For someone new to Orthodoxy, as am I, this book may be all you need to learn about the liturgy, history, and theology of the Faith. The author begins by describing the layout of an Orthodox church building, then leads you through the structure describing the parts of the church and the liturgical activities associated with each part. With each discussion, the author narrates the history and theology that is the foundation of that aspect of the liturgy. By the time you finish the book, you have a solid understanding of the liturgy, history, and theology of Orthodoxy. In addition tho the craftsmanship of the writing, the book is very personal and easy to read. When I attended my first Orthodox service, I felt comfortable knowing what was happening, why it was happening, and amazed that this is what happened in the early church services 1900 years ago.

I am not Greek Orthodox. Frederica is a wonderful and clear writer and she tackles several theological concepts that really helps clarify the GO stance on some key doctrines. She really helped me to understand Greek Orthodoxy as much as one can I suppose without actually becoming one. I would recommend this book for someone who would like to form an informed opinion on who they are and what they believe.

By going on an imaginary walk through an Orthodox temple, the reader is introduced to a wide variety of topics about the Faith in a natural way. Though not comprehensive, this book does a good job hitting most of the major cognitive questions that people might have when first experiencing the Orthodox Church, and in an easy to follow, conversational format. There are also short videos that have been released on YouTube that parallel some of what has been said within these pages. Overall, a nicely executed and tasteful evangelistic tool within the Orthodox Church.Caveat Emptor: As might be expected from the author (though surely written in all sincerity), she does introduce the topic of women's ordination and propose a discussion about it for 3/4 of a page. This would be confusing to a new person coming into Orthodoxy who perhaps may not be expecting such a deviation in doctrinal position from an Orthodox author.

A beautifully crafted introduction to Orthodox Christianity. The author sets out to teach us as though we were newcomers to a church community. By taking us into the church building she introduces us to the spirituality of the Eastern Church: icons as windows to heaven, the Divine Liturgy bridging our world to the next. But mostly she shows us that the ancient traditions still communicate and embrace and lead us to the unflagging love and mercy of God.

Extremely readable, engaging, enjoyable and challenging. As an Anglican who has attended the Divine Liturgy a few times in Russian, once in Finnish but with a Bulgarian choir, but only once in English, I found Mathewes-Greens' format to be helpful and accessible. The divergence in theological understanding between East and West (Roman, Anglican and Protestant) was presented in a very chatty way that didn't put up "straw men" to knock down or try to win points. Mother Frederica's aim to see the reader helped in their personal transformation in Christ was evident and permeated the whole book without clichés or being preachy.

This book is not easy to assess. In a way it is a novel, but the postscript directly turns it into something else. Had it not been for this postscript, I would have awarded this book a higher rating. It may be somewhat verbose and predictable, but it was a pleasant read, without any real tension or love interests.Towards the end we are finally introduced to the “Gospel of Mary Magdalene”, which is exactly that, the gospel of Mary Magdalene, according to the author. The central theme of the four gospels, i.e. Jesus’ vicarious sacrifice, is absent. Also absent is any in-depth knowledge of Jewish first century culture. This is a pity, for it takes away from the believability of this ‘gospel’. The author obviously did a lot of research in Cathari history, but is looks as if she relied on Sunday school memories as far as the background to the gospels is concerned. As did Dan Brown, this author claims that the gospels were extensively edited in the time of Constantine. This, if it were true, would be rather convenient. There is actually no evidence for it, and plenty against it. In my observation it is not the bible believing people who are one-eyed and ignore historical evidence, but rather those who want to debunk the scriptures.Be that as it may, this book certainly held my attention. It was also, at times, quite funny, but I was not always sure whether the humour was intended or not.

I bought this as a gift. I already have my own copy, which I loved, and I went on to read the other two books in the series. She really brings Mary Magdalene to life and not at all in a dull way. The book has mystery, intrigue, and it's a page turner. As for the comparison with Dan Browns book which came out around the same time - well I loved that one, too. There were similarities but they really weren't the same and I think Kathleen McGowan did a nice job of expressing the value of the feminine. Loved it!

This was recommended to me. The friend said she couldn't put it down. Mine was not the same experience. I found this book to be average at best. I did not like the main character. She seemed egotistical and rather flat. The book was so bogged down with pseudo-mystery, as in - something mysterious is happening but we're not going to tell you yet. Problem was I didn't care. It actually reminded me of a Scooby doo episode. You know how at the end there was always a post mortem on events and a foiled plan by bad guys? The actual method of writing was good, but the story just lacked anything interesting. The best parts were the flashbacks and visions the main character had. I will not be buying anymore books in this series.

Kept me interested and felt like this was more a work of fact than fiction.Very healing for me too on profound levels.

This book had been recommended to me by a tour guide of 'ancient mysteries'while visiting France. I had read 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' byMichael Baigent and Richard Leigh, who also uncover the theme and meaningbehind certain well known symbols. The mention of sacred geometry and leylines where cathedrals have been built. The masacre of the 'Cathars'at Montsegur. The mention of Freemason's. (French and Scot's) I am enjoyingKathleen McGowan's writing style and story telling. This book is engaging.I will buy another by same author, when I complete this one. She has done alot of research on the subject and discloses information that I did not know. I highly recommend to anyone who's interested in esoterica and ancient mysteries.

Why the author refers to Jesus by name used by Arabic speaking Moslems? why not his original Hebrew, or Aramaic name, or is she wwanted to use Arbic form, that why not the version used by Arabic speaking Christians? This book was a huge disapointment.Wanted to like it, but...Mary Magdalene deserves a better treatment.Instead of giving a plot summary, I am pointing out author's mistakes, but not all of them, just sampling, too many of those, would make a chapter pointing them out.First issue: the research. For ex. art history: the author assumes that any Mary in red robes is Mary Magdalene, even if she looks like Madonna, Virgin Mary. Author argues that Madonnas are dressed in blue only. Here the Kathleen McGowan shows insufficient research:if she paid more attention to art history she would know that Virgin was dressed in navy blue, other blues, grey, red, white, imperial purple, red robe and blue mantle over, etc. It depended on time, the school, and aspect. For example Madonna in her humility aspect was dressed in blue. Red symbolized charity. Etc. etc.etc. McGowan info about identifying MM in any occasion of Mary dressed in red is spreading misinformation.Colors were quite a complex issue, and narrowing the iconography down as author did isn't historically accurate, and is ignorant. Iconography is not so simplistic to just identify Virgin Mary because the figure is dressed in blue, or Mary Magdalene because she wears red. Not so simple as the author and some people assume.Or the ring given to Maureen: McGowan describes it as something special. Yet deducting from the description, it is a common pilgrim ring, this type was produced en masse during the Middle Ages.Regular history, sample example: the Borgias were sweet people after all, just vilified? Really? Also Marie Antoinette saying :"let them eat cake!" It is an old gossip, most likely a piece of hostile propaganda, I give credit to the author, yet what is translated as "cake" in English is brioche in French, a different kind of baked stuff, not a cake, it is like sweet bread, if you are no familiar with it. French quote is "S'ils n'ont plus de pain, qu'ils mangent de la brioche." Also Marie Antoinette as the Shepherdess, because there was a fashion in Europe to live bucolic life. Pastoral life style, highly idealized and romanticized was continuation of classical tradition in Europe.Need to research history, not jump to conclusions because it is convenient.Writing: is quite like some old fashioned romance, spiked with many words like " magnificent," wonderful," on an on. The part of writings which deal with older material are better, but somehow read like Sylvia Browne's claims to retro-cognition. Browne also wrote a historical novel about Jesus. The Expected One reads like Harlequin romance of an old fashion, like not belonging to this era, but to the times of corsets and fainting chairs and excessive affect in women. There are also some kitschy moments too. The main character is kind of weak, needs to have things explained to her, and of course is courted by an ultra rich aristocrat who lives in a castle provides a golden dress for the ball and there she is treated like a queen, as she is the shepherdess, the Expected One. Sorry, but it reads like a juvenile dream of unleashing the inner princes, quite a navel gazing ego trip.Plot and hype: as this book was selling with the hype of the author being the descendant of the lineage coming from Mary Magdalene and Jesus, and the author said that the novel is partially autobiographical some passages felt like if the author was weaving: "here reader, I am the Shepherdess, the Expected One, the new leader!" Too much personal psychology revealed. Some passages were also lazy plotted: instead of inventing some thrilling moments, the author just lets the expected one to find what she needs to find after having a revealing vision. Quite conveniant device for a writer writing a thriller, but disappointing for a reader. Ending unfulfilling.Assumptions: for the name "Paschal," as the author makes a big deal out of it in the book, and it was part of "proven facts" while marketing the book. This name (also the form Pascal), is common in France, also in Southern France and the West of Italy. It derives from the first name: Pascal. Like the last names such as Davis, or Simon, etc. come from first names. Pascal means "born on Easter." Pascha is Easter. But Pascal being really a Cathar name in particular? No.You find in the Cathar country names like Bonhomme, this really a Cathar name!Poor Mary Magdalene. But I hope the skills of the author will develop. I read the Book of Love and, and was better written. So, maybe the last book is much better? This book being offensive? Yes, for insulting readers' intelligence, not for supposedly "controversial" subject matter. It makes quite high rolling claims, in reality is catering to people who are not well versed in art history, iconography, cultural history.

Just an FYI for purchasers... Be aware that Fourth Edition CD ROM (and I assume all earlier versions) will NOT run on Mac O SX. The documents contained within were set up for Windows PC or as a Mac .osx extension. Mac NO LONGER supports file extensions in .osx! If you have earlier editions you will not have full access to the CD ROM portions of the text. The videos however will work.In addition If you decide to supplement the Fourth Edition and want to save money by purchasing the Fifth Edition in Kindle format; the Kindle format DOES NOT include the CD ROM portions of the book.

Bought this book for part of my massage program. It's laid out in an easy-to-follow format. It gives you the option to either read a short synopsis of key information about each disease, which is presented in small, blue text boxes throughout each chapter (great if you're making flashcards); or you have the option to read a more in-depth section about each disease. Puts the information in the context of massage therapy and discusses the risks and benefits of each disease in terms of massage. Very important information for a future/LMT to have and I'd highly recommend checking it out.

This was a class textbook for my massage course. I am definitely going to keep this book around after I get my license. Very useful and informative. It covers most of the major things one would encounter as a massage therapist and how to handle those situations.

Outstanding insight to pathology from a massage therapist’s perspective.

As a massage therapy student and the partner of a physician, I have unique opportunity to run a lot of topics discussed in this book past a knowledgeable source. While certainly not an authoritative medical text, it is a concise, easy to understand and well organized book that belongs on the shelf of every massage therapist. The one item that is sorely lacking is any bibliography. Even some basic references for those seeking clarification or more information would be a great addition. My other suggestion would be to include a pictorial guide to common skin conditions. As therapists we often encounter skin pathologies that we are not familiar with. While of course we can not diagnose, this addition would be helpful for those concerned with the appropriateness of massage for a particular client or the possibility of being exposed to a contagious pathogen.

The pathologies are NOT INCLUDED IN THE INDEX. This is completely counterintuitive. Instead, the pathologies are listed somewhere in the front (and only there). I still don't understand how a publisher can print a book with an index that excludes the most essential content. Encephalopathy is in the index. Encephalitis is not. I have to go to the front of the book for that to find the page number. It defies logic. Many of the pathologies included don't make much sense where they are (ie, scleroderma is listed as a muskuloskeletal disease). The "in brief" sidebar of whether massage is indicated or contraindicated is a great idea, but is overly verbose and complex. A simplified "at a glance" format would be much easier for learning and understanding.

This is an incredibly useful reference. However, the electronic version is a pain to use, and totally misses most of the opportunities that an e-book should offer. Some examples:- No page numbers, only "Locations," and some TEN THOUSAND of them, which don't correlate to anything. Totally useless.- The index just lists words. No "Locations," no hyperlink (which would be the obvious beautiful e-feature), nothing. It's a useless list of what's in the book, with no help as to where to find it. It's the anti-index. Bonkers.- Table of contents, almost as useless. Hyperlinked, but way too general to zip to the desired topic....assuming you already KNOW what section the pathology is categorized under.- There are videos cited which appear to be hyperlinked...but they're not actually, so you can't click and watch them.- The captions for the illustrations are not "grouped" with the illustrations, so the captions will often appear on a different page. Dumb.Essentially, to look up a specific pathology or topic, you are forced to enter keywords in the Search, wait as it searches and shows EVERY CITATION of the word appears, and hunt through for the one citation you need. In desperation I started to laboriously highlight and bookmark the topic sections I study, in order to make my own sort of index. CRAZY!E-book technology offers lots of opportunities to amp up the usability and beauty of a reference like this one. All that potential, wasted and worse here.If I were Ruth Werner, I would be screaming bloody hell at the fools who have made her well-researched, respected handbook into such a clumsy dinosaur of an e-book.

Well organized and concise. Many pathologies are discussed. The author get straight to the point without a lot of excess wordiness. This is very useful for Massage Therapist. I also like that she has shown photos of so many skin diseases, both contagious and non. You never know what someone will present with on your table, it is nice to be able to identify what is going on with their skin....especially if it's contagious. Also, every pathology has complete indications and contraindications listed.
