The Watermelon Seed by Greg BazoliAudio book about a seed. A crocodile imagines what happens when he does swallow the watermelon seed.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
This book is attractively illustrated both for adults and for children. My toddler enjoyed looking at the funny crocodile. However, the story is VERY basic (we have a 22-month-old), and I'm also worried that it might create an irrational fear of eating fruit or veggies that have seeds. (This crocodile swallows a watermelon seed and thinks it's going to grow a melon in his belly, and he's going to turn into a melon, and he has a panic attack.)We already have enough issues getting our toddler to eat fruits and veggies, the last thing we need is irrational fears of seeds in them. (And if this is for older kids who completely understand the humour of it and eat well, then it again missed the mark because it's very, very basic. Almost too basic for a 2-year-old.)We love reading, and we're desperate to find more books of the Mo Willems quality, but I'm starting to lose hope.
This book will be a forever wonderful memory in our family because this is one of the two books my daughter fell in love with and was part of the duo of books she insisted be read to her every evening before bed. This is the first book that she likes to point and repeat the words out loud to so this story truly engages her from cover to cover. We first borrowed this book from the library and now we have our own copy for my daughters growing library.
Great illustrations, great idea for a book, but it falls a bit flat at the end.It would have been better to have the character understand that swallowing a seed is OK, vs the path it took (could have been a good learning opportunity for kids).OK, but there are better children's books.
This is a super cute story, perfect for early readers.The length is just right for bedtime reading, and the story is amusing enough for anytime/fun-time reading.At the heart of it is a dilemma most any kid has experienced (and for which the resolution never ceases to entertain).
Cute funny simple book! The colors are awesome, fun story. I remember as a child one of my older cousins telling me that if I swallowed a watermelon seed it would grow in my stomach. I remember the fear laying in bed worrying. Hilarious! My 3 year old was laughing throughout this book.
I read this to my library classes grades K-2 and they loved this book. The kids made their own "watermelons" using half a paper plate and crayons. This book is definitely one I will use as a read aloud again!
My kids love this book. After checking it out from the library numerous times we finally added it to our home collection.

I hate writing this because I know how painful (or joyful) reviews are to receive. Luckily this book has received a truckload, but I wanted to add my thoughts. To me, this book was a good idea, poorly executed, and far too long. I rarely find myself unable to finish reading something, but I fast-forwarded to the end.Cherry, the main character, is an unbearable inverted snob and I found myself wincing at the references to her 'working class' upbringing and how it hindered her progress up the social ladder. Her boyfriend was a dull and one-dimensional creature, his mother, Laura, almost creepily obsessed with her offspring. The head hopping – leaping from one character's point of view to another within the same paragraph – was extremely off-putting and with more than fifty percent to go I'd seriously had enough.I believe that the author has the potential to write something better, but she needs to focus on more credible characters, less of the POV switches, and structuring a story that doesn't sag like an ageing mattress in the middle.
MY REVIEW OF “THE GIRLFRIEND†BY MICHELLE FRANCESKudos to Michelle Frances, author of “The Girlfriend†for writing such an intense psychological thriller. What is the expression, †A son is a son till he takes a wife, a daughter is a daughter for the rest of your life?†Well, it’s happened. Your fabulously educated and wonderful son has found “herâ€. You know, the girl of his dreams , his future forever. Isn’t this supposed to be what you always wanted for your son to be happy? But, what if “her†is just not the right girl for him?Michelle Frances describes her characters as complicated, complex and some are dysfunctional to say the least. Laura has the perfect son, Daniel who is becoming a physician. Since Laura has a dysfunctional and lonely marriage, Laura also loves the opportunity to be part of her son’s life, in an obsessive way. Daniel is a loving son, a giving person and has met the girl of his dreams, Cherry. Unfortunately, Cherry is a nightmare to Laura, and with good reason. Cherry is extremely ambitious, not necessarily in her real estate position, but her goals in life. Cherry wants more, than she had as a child growing up in a lower economic area. As a matter of fact Cherry wants it all, at any cost.Who said that †All is fair in love and war?†This story reminds me of “War of the Roses†only between an obsessed mother and an unstable girlfriend.I would highly recommend this captivating and intriguing story for readers that love a great psychological thriller with twists and turns and suspense. I received an Advanced Reading Copy for my honest review. Oh, WARNING: This is a very hard book to put down when you have started it!! Happy Reading!
There are 3 main characters Laura, a woman who was extremely wealthy because her husband has a successful company, Cherry, a young woman who was raised in poverty and Daniel, the son of Laura and a recent med school graduate. Both women are liars and manipulators and lack ethics. Early in the book, the relation between Daniel and his mother was so gushy that it bordered on incestuous – "the sight of him made her heart soar." I assume the author was trying to emphasize the change by making it dramatic. My chief complaint about this book is the author's extensive descriptions that add nothing to the plot or character development. And in many of these descriptions, the author attempts to use uncommon words. I had the impression that the author was trying to impress the reader with her intellectual capacity. In the first several chapters the author repeats over and over that Cherry was raised in poverty but was trying to raise her status. In my mind, I was screaming at the author "I know, I know, move on." In chapter 3 the author says Laura "spent a languorous afternoon in the garden." A few sentences later Daniel is laughing at her enthusiasm. I do not believe languorous and enthusiasm are compatible. In Chapter 11 the author says "Nicole stood and stretched languorously in her bikini, then went inside to freshen up, Brigitte at her heels." In Chapter 12 the author says "here the sea was a clear aquamarine and the waves made a little plip sound as they flopped, seemingly exhausted, onto the beach. If the best description you can come up with to describe a wave is that if flopped on the beach, it is probably better to not describe it in the first place. In chapter 13, when describing the pool boy scooping leaves from the pool, the author says: "They sat, both enjoying the measured slow movements of the pool boy, the regular wooshing of the water, and the drip-drip-drip as he lifted his net." The book would have had a smoother flow if the author had concentrated on the plot instead of descriptions. Late in the book, Cherry kills a puppy and mails the dead animal to an associate of Lauren. The character of Cherry, as developed to that point, would not have done such a thing. I have other complaints about the book, but I will just say that I was disappointed with the book. I felt it was poorly written.
Finished just to see how it ended. The blurb and the reviews hype this book up to something that it is not. I felt that neither the story or the characters were really well developed. I was not invested in the outcome of the story or the characters. The writing was not bad, and I would not avoid future books by this author - I would not believe the hype though. This is a easy beach read that is soon forgotten.

This book is gorgeous. I got it as a First Communion present for my son, and now he gets to bring it to Mass every weekend to read at church. It has many beautiful full-page drawings, and almost every page has a picture of some sort. It's not a full-text Bible; rather, it has stories, told in a narrative, with the corresponding books and verses listed under the title of each. It makes for fascinating reading for a young Catholic - allowing him to actually understand and remember the stories without having them too simplified like in other children's bibles. In the Gospel section, each of the stories lists the corresponding verses from all of the Gospels in which it appears, so you can see that the same story appears in multiple Gospels. There are also a handful of the most common Catholic prayers in the back. All in all, this is a wonderful Bible for young readers.
I purchased this for my grandson's First Communion. He loves it! When I visited on Sunday he told me he had spent over an hour reading it that morning. He loves the history and the beautiful art work. This is definitely not a 'children's Bible' but it's at a level that he can understand and not be bored! Lovely gift!!!
I love the pictures in this children's bible. They draw you into the story but still leave room for the words to complete the picture in the mind. I chose it for my children ages 5 and 2. It is written as a bible rather than someone's commentary on the bible. The translation is truly catholic. For example in the story of Adam and Eve it reads, "I will put a strong festering hatred between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers. She will crush your head and you will bruise her heel." No gender neutral stuff. The language is simple enough to follow easily without being so simple that the child will not learn new vocabulary from it. Thank you Amy Welborn. My search has ended.
This book is made of great material and thick / glossy pages. The pictures are nice and in great color. Definitely worth the money.
Bought it for a gift for an older woman. She loved it. Says it is easy to read and the photos are lovely. She displays it as a coffee table book when not reading it, so good purchase for me even though I sent it sight unseen.
Not enough stories in it for my daughter, the illustrations are just okay.
This is a beautifully illustrated bible that depicts characters in diverse skin tones and vivid colors for scenery and background. These illustrations bring the action and understanding of the verses. The stories are from the actual scriptures and are large print. This bible will provide many opportunties for reading to your child or for your child to read themself.
I actually bought this to have in my home library because it reminded me of the one I had as a kid growing up. The colors are not as bright as I remember, but it's still a great keepsake. I actually ended up ordering another one to give to my niece for her first communion gift.

This is the best book I have every read on addiction and Christian Recovery! It has changed my life and world view. I have let my 'addiction' define me. It is who I was not who I am- now. Much needed book amidst all the clinical solutions.
This is a tough love book. It really came in my life at a time when I needed some true words. The Lord had made it very clear our road together was blocked at that long established idolotrous behavior. I was painfully living outside God's will and did not think I could have a life without getting high on wine as a daily escape. I was wrong! I read this book in July 2010 and began to really take the sin seriously and seeked help after 40 years of denial. Through much upheaval and prophetic words from my Beloved,I took His hand. He told me to "ride on the handlebars. He knew the destination". I had no other choice but to trust and honor Him and oh! what glory and promise He has shown me. Dr. Shaw's advice to "quit for 6 months" motivated me. He emphasized "I would not die"! And I have not. I am ALIVE!"Greater is the power of the work of the resurrected Christ within us than the power of any sin no matter how long established in our lives." Romans 6:4,5,11Thank you Dr. Shaw for speaking your revelation for others.My will has been splintered and the freedom is dazzling. I am doing the workbook now with a Christian counselor.

We all struggle with one addiction or another. I was asked to mentor those in drug court, and thought that this would be very useful to prepare me. Instead, I found it helpful to me and confronting my addiction to sugar, and the reality of Candida. Excellent book on addiction from a Biblical perspective (for me, the only perspective) for anyone.
