I was expecting this book to be the song arrangements from Beautiful the Carol King Musical. After all, isn't that how the book is marketed?! It's a compilation of songs by Carol King, but in different keys from the musical Beautiful. Most of the songs have different words, arrangement structure, and printed in totally different keys. It's as though Hal Leonard publishing was given a song list and pulled the songs from a database in the original previously printed arrangements. Then they slapped the new artwork from Beautiful the musical on the front cover. Nothing is written as the Beautiful: the Carol King Musical arrangements depicted on the cast recorded album. I'm very disappointed in the laziness at Hal Leonard Published.
The songs are not as they are performed in the show.
These are not the arrangements from the Broadway Musical about Carole King. They are merely reprints of songs that were published for easy piano/guitar years ago. You could probably find them online for free. Don’t waste your money.
Have my voice students singing Carole King songs as a result of this musical. They might not have been aware of her otherwise.

A re-telling of the court case in a Pennsylvania small town where the school-board was taken over by ultra-Christians with the intention of including Creationism disguised as Intelligent Design in the high school Biology classes to counter "Darwinism." The author is a great grandson of Darwin who, obviously, was very interested and attended the trial and the machinations leading up to it in the town.The trial itself was a melange of expert witnesses on both sides. It was revealed just how deceit was used by those professing belief in ID as actual science. But all science relies on factual experiments, observations and conclusions and ID was found lacking in these science requirements that are needed to justify teaching it in ant science classroom. And so the judge ruled.The flavor of this book comes from the portraits of the townspeople involved in the contest and those who wished it would all go way because the trial had gone national because of the issues involved. Touches of humor spice the narrative from time to time. The book represents theongoing disputes about religion and science and the choice of what is to be taught in public school to our children: the Bible or science.
Film writer and director Matthew Chapman has a few reasons to be interested in the trial of Kitzmiller v. Dover School Board. First, he is a direct descendant of Charles Darwin. Second, he has written before on issues of faith vs. science (Trials of the Monkey). Third, he is the type of writer inherently drawn to exploring characters.This third reason is what seperates this book from the several others profiling the "battle of intelligent design versus science." As other reviewers point out, books like Edward Humes's "Monkey Girl" and Gordy Sack's "Battle Over the Meaning of Everything" may be more journalistic, this book explores the characters. Chapman seems to have a face-to-face with every major (and minor) player on all sides.Beyond this, Chapman himself notes, "One of my chief defects - or better qualities, I'm not sure which - is that I find it almost impossible to maintain animosity toward people with whom I violently disagree once I get to know them." (loc. 490, Kindle edition) No matter how judgmental and acerbic Chapman can be - and he is both, strongly pro-evolution - Chapman paints all characters in as fair a light as possible. (One of the best parts comes later in the book, where Chapman reveals the very human side of Bill Buckingham, the perjurer and hot-headed leader of the Dover School Board that started the whole mess. You almost - ALMOST - empathize with the guy!)If Chapman's book explores the more human Dover, it doesn't make for anywhere near the gripping blow-by-blow account of Edward Humes' or Gordy Sacks' books. Whereas those are very matter of fact and linear, this book jumps from spot to spot, intertwining scenes from the trial with scenes from the school-board meetings to philosophic rumination. The other two books are more snappy and journalistic in tone, whereas this one (for good or bad) is warmer in tone, which doesn't make for a page turner.In the end, Chapman's book on a well-trodden subject DOES manage to set itself apart form the others by focusing on the characters more than the others. With Humes,' and Sacks' book (I have yet to read Lebo's), I feel like I understood the trial quite well. With this book, I feel like I understand Dover quite well.
I became fascinated with the Kitzmiller vs. Dover trial nearly three years after Judge Jones issued his ruling. From a number of Internet sites, I read a great deal about the trial including many pages of testimony and 35 to 40 pages of the 139-page ruling in favor of the plaintiffs.But much of that information, while fascinating, lacked the narrative quality that a screenwriter like Chapman could bring to the story. I decided to buy this book along with Gordy Slack's "The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything" to fill in some gaps in my knowledge and to try and understand the roles played by the Thomas More Law Center, the Discovery Institute, and the members of the Dover Board of Education. I was very happy that I did.Chapman is a decendent of Charles Darwin; a great-great grandson, in fact. He is also a screenwriter and his method of telling a story borrows the flashback idea from the movies. Occasionally, he'll pull some piece of information about a past event and bring it into current time in a manner that can be entertaining but, at times, annoying.His writing skill is first-rate and he has the flair of a novelist. For example, he writes "If the plaintiffs' legal team was a well-oiled collegial machine, the defense was a dysfunctional family with a frequently absent father". You don't get the sense that you are reading an account from a daily newspaper with a quip like that.However, I sometimes felt that if I had not made myself aware of a good deal of the background information concerning this case prior to reading his book, that I might feel, if not lost, that at least I was missing something. For that reason and for the disorienting flashback technique, I gave the book a 4-star rating - his storytelling ability would be worth 5-stars in my opinion.I enjoyed this book a little bit more than Gordy Slack's, though they cannot be directly compared as they approach the subject in quite different ways. Slack sounds, at times, like a guy writing for the Huffington Post, rather than a former editor of a natural history magazine. I say that with affection. His chapter on "Assembling Goliath", the pooling of elite resources by the plaintiffs' team, made me feel like I was watching Eisenhower discuss the invasion plans with his staff. Chapman, however, went to the current event and filled in whatever background info he chose to as the narrative of the trial moved along.Read in tandem, the two books give you a good sense of the trial, the outcome, the implications for years to come. Each is a very well-told tale.

We read this before our boys went to their own camp. It was a fun adventure and a little lesson on what not to do sometimes (no playing tippy canoe). We enjoy Tacky's stories.
My niece is a teacher in Arkansas. Her 1st grade class is sorely lacking in enjoyable books for afternoon reading. I purchased every 'Tacky' title available on Amazon and sent them down to her. I figured penguins in Arkansas would be a novelty for the kids, and they LOVED it!!The 1st graders love Tacky and his crazy adventures; he's always faced w a perplexing problem, but seems to make the right (sometimes tough) choice to solve it. Good lessons for children!

I am new to juicing and I just love this book! It has so many yummy recipes and it gives just enough information on the nutritional aspects of the ingredients. My favorite part is the customized recipes for just about any ailment you can think of. It's easy to read and well written. I have never liked greens before and they have many recipes to help mask the taste. There are detailed sections on vitamins and their function. This is an excellent home remedy book for all juicers. It has recipes for weight loss, asthma, detox, bloating, cancer fighting, heartburn, the list goes on. I don't feel the need to buy any other juicing books at this point.
Just got our copy today and I have already made a dent in reading it. I wasn't sure about this whole juicing thing, but really wanted to try it after seeing Fat, Sick and nearly Dead, but he doesn't offer any information about why things are good for you and what each offers. This book goes in depth about the various fruits and veggies, what their flavors are, what goes with what, and which types are best for certain health issues. There are a lot of recipes, most of which look really good! I can't wait to dive into the various recipes!
I have tried many, many juicing books over the years and some were too far out for me, some too complicated, some just really tasted awful, some delved too much into the glorious miracles brought about by juicing. I am well-aware of the benefits of lots of fruit and veggies, but hesitant to assign miracles to any one combination. I am also very busy. No matter how dedicated I am to good health habits, I require two things: little prep time and good taste. This book is the one I recommend to all my friends with busy lives and the need for tasty, quick whole food drinks as they rush about their lives. I also recommend my favorite masticating juicer, the Omega J8006. It is small enough to carry with me when I travel, and very easy to clean. If you do not use an easy-to-clean juicer with continuous feed and have some really tasty recipes you will quickly decide that juicing is too much of a hassle and it does not have to be. I really like the content of this book, I really like the recipes, but I really DO NOT like the way the recipes are set up. The book is "sectioned off" with different chapters and the recipes are mixed in with health info- which in theory is really great- you can see what recipes are good for what you just read. However, it's not so great when you want to thumb through and find a recipe based on what produce you have. I wish the recipes were all together in the back of the book, and the info just referenced to recipe names / page numbers. Instead, at the end of each chapter, there is a handful of juices that are "good for __" (detoxing, cancer, asthma, etc.. whatever chapter you're reading)That being said, there is a lot of good information for the newbie juicer. I've tried a handful of recipes and have liked them all (my favorite is the Bloody Caesar). To me, its set up more like a text book rather than a recipe book. Which is okay, because you do get a lot of info, I have just found it "difficult" to find a recipe based on ingredients. I'm usually not looking for a recipe because its good for my asthma, I'm looking for a recipe because I have X, Y, Z produce and want to know what would be good together.If you're new to juicing though, I think this book is a good one to start with since you do get so much information on the health benefits and cautions you need to take when juicing.

Chapters include The Juicing Revolution, Gearing Up for Juicing, Basic Juicing Ingredients, Juicing for Weight Loss, Juice Fasting, Juice Detoxing and Cleansing, and many more.The book and recipes are broken into several different catagories according to your health needs such as "good for reducing back pain", "good for hair - skin - nails", "good for reducing ADHD", "good for easing respiratory disorders", etc.Juice fasting is fully explained including a safe way to re-introduce foods.It is very interesting, and I keep referring to different sections of the book over and over.This is a complete guide to juicing, and I would recommend it to anyone new to juicing.
Not what I was hoping for. If you're looking for juice recipes with multiple ingredients, this book isn't for you. If you're looking for some simple 2 or 3 ingredient juices, this this IS the book for you. On the one hand, it gives you the juice recipes that have ingredients that are good for common ailments, but the recipes are really uninspiring, and the title is misleading because of that. I haven't made any juices from this book, I like more ingredients in mine, more nutrients in each glass if I'm going to use my juicer and have to clean it.
OK before you decide, do some research on the internet. There are a lot of informative videos and articles about Juicing. If you decide this is something you are interested in, buy a juicer (if you don't have one) and then BUY THIS BOOK! If you have a juicer and a little will-power and are serious about losing weight and being healthier, this book will HELP! It's not for everyone, but I can tell you JUICING WORKS! I've lost 27 pounds (and my wife has lost a bit more, but I'm not telling on her) using this method. You won't starve, you will lose weight and be healither! My mother bought this book for me after giving birth. I was having difficulty producing enough milk. The author covered the information in depth (starting with the stages of breast feeding including pregnancy, milk production, feeding an infant, returning to work and weaning). Some of the most helpful tips for me were:-Breastfeeding mothers need about 500 more calories a day for a total of 2,000 calories and also need to drink plenty of water. This includes eating a snack and drinking water while pumping.-Breastfeeding works by supply and demand. Breastfeed frequently in order to increase milk supply and pump for 15 minutes afterwards.-The most common herbal recommendations are fenugreek, goat’s rue, blessed thistle, moringa, alfalfa, and shatavari. (Although the book did not go into detail about these supplements, I was then able to research them more and order a supplement off of amazon).-Eat lactogenic foods including oats, barley, leafy green vegetables, almonds, cashews, brewer’s yeast, fennel, and beets. (I would notice an increase in my milk supply on the days I would eat some of these foods).Other topics covered were: cracked nipples, engorgement, plugged ducts, thrush, mastitis, and latching issues(and more).I would recommend this book to anyone considering or who is breastfeeding. I have already bought this for a couple of friends who have asked me for breastfeeding advice. I would have felt more prepared if I had read this book prior to delivery. If you are going to pick just one book to read covering everything you need to know about breastfeeding, choose this one!

This has quickly become my #1 breastfeeding guide.
I read this over the course of a few days when my son was about 4 weeks old. I was looking for tips to fine-tune our breastfeeding game and found not only helpful information for that, but also realized there was a wealth of knowledge I wish I had had before my son came along. We struggled with a few topics covered in the section about the first two weeks and had I had this guide while they were going on, I think I would have been able to resolve my issues much faster while also saving myself many tears! Highly recommend reading before baby comes, but even if you’re finding it late in your breastfeeding game it’s still worth it, especially considering the many tips the book offers for later stages of your breastfeeding journey. I also think it’s a great gift for any frat time mamas you may know that are expecting!!
This is easy to read and to the point with great illustrations. I like the format - it’s pretty short and only took me a few hours to read. I have two other breastfeeding books that put me to sleep in the first few pages and I never picked them up again. I learned a lot from this book, and it seems to have really good information that will be very helpful in the near future when my baby is here!

It suggests DOWN-TO-Earth practicality which in whole adds peace to a sometimes difficult but lovely experience.
I totally bombed breastfeeding my first son, and I want to do better with the next. Anxiety, not having a support group, just failing left and right with something that should be natural made me not breastfeed as long as I wanted to. I already read the book, and I plan to keep it with me during the hours of difficulty and stress this time around.Nothing too surprising... but all good information. A quick read which is nice for either a mom or a new mom.I also read "The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality", which I highly recommend. It is true in American culture when are as supported and valued as a mother, and even though a lot in this book might not be suitable and accessible easily, it will give a lot of ideas to think of for your new mommy future.
This book was perfect!! I’m due to have my first in November and this book answered every single question I had about breastfeeding without being overwhelming. It’s very up to date. The illustrations are extremely helpful. I even took a breastfeeding class after reading this book and I was the only one that knew everything already due to this.
