This is a very good feel-good story. You finish reading and you feel a little lighter!! The hero is a widower with a 16 year old son. They live in New York City and he is a very successful businessman. He has just landed the biggest client in the city for his firm and he is at a party celebrating. He gets a phone call and it is the police telling him his son has been arrested. When he gets to the jail he is met with a very angry, sullen teenager. It doesn't take long for him to realize that he doesn't even know his son and he has failed miserably as a father. To save his son and hopefully their relationship he decides to move them out of the city and to a small town. Of course, the boy is angry about that now but it is the right thing to do. He has taken a year's leave of absence and hopes to get their lives back on tract. There is a lot of soul searching, etc. as the father tries to win back his son.The heroine of the story is the local vet. She is the single parent to a 15 year old daughter. She has never married and there are a lot of secrets surrounding the birth of her child. Really good way the author handled having an unwed mother face her situation and make something of her life. She is a very good person but her daughter has turned into the teen from hell. She has no idea what has happened to this once sweet child. There is a lot going on with these two as well.Of course the H&h meet and there is instant chemistry but he has a fiancée back in N.Y. Interesting how that happened and what he does about it. They get their HEA after a lot of very interesting situations. It is a very good story and I definitely recommend it. A fun and entertaining read.I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
I got this book for free and it even came with fifteen chapters of Jane Austen Girl. This author was new to me, so when I saw that it was free, I gave it a shot. I'm so glad that I did! I was so emotionally invovled in the book from the very beginning! My heart was in my throat several times and I could feel the emotions the main characters were going through. So what's it about? It's a story about Ian, a 39 year-old New York City stockbroker who moves into the small town of Keeling Creek, Virginia so he could re-connect with his troubled teenage son. Soon he meets Colby, the first female veterinarian in the town, who is also a single parent of a teenager. Since he is the first good looking bachelor that has come into the town in a long time, the locals try to play matchmaker between the two main characters. Things should be simple, except for one problem: Ian is engaged to someone else who lives in New York City.Ian and Colby become friends and spend some time together, but soon the attraction between them is hard to overcome. I could feel every angsty moment when the characters would look across the room at each other. And the disappointment Colby felt when she thought she finally found someone she could love only to realize that he was already taken.Read this book! You won't regret it! There's no infidelity, no alpha-male a**holes and the intimate scenes are not graphic, but sweet. The author lets the reader imagine what happens. The situations and dialogue seem realistic. This was a refreshing change from other romances I've read.
This was different, a solid read with lots of different facets and it kept me interested until the end. There were mid-life adults having crises, teenagers in crisis, lots of animals, and caring family and friends. A lot of love flowed through. Plus, I'm tired of all the explicit sexual crap that's being released and it all reads badly and exactly the same. The only thing this author did wrong was list this book as a Christian readers option. It's passable to me but obviously not for others who barked and complained. The term "Christian values" is a complete oxymoron, just like the people who complain minus the oxy part. Hypocrites mostly in my experience. Even my own grandfather drank and beat his family up on Saturday nights but showed up at church for his deacon position on Sunday. Was the same at other churches that my mother dragged me to throughout my life and so-called Christians were the absolute worst friends (I'll keep my admitted sinners). So all of you that complained about a man and woman feeling attraction and sharing one kiss before doing the right thing, making love, and then marrying soon after, stuff it. Look at your reading list, ladies! Lots of near porn and BDSM junk in there I see and you're lucky I'm not calling you all out. Because one thing I can't stand is a mouthy hypocrite.
I don’t like sappy romance novels and so I nearly passed this up. But it was free and I didn’t have anything to read at the moment so I thought I’d give it a try. It was very good and well worth it.Colby is a small town vet and single mother of a teenage daughter who thinks she put love behind her years ago. Ian is also struggling to raise his teenage son, and when Luke is arrested for drug possession, decides to move them to the country so they can spend time working on their relationship.Ok, there is nothing new or unexpected in this novel. Everything plays out exactly as you expected it to. But that’s not why people read romances. The characters are totally believable, and it walks a fine line between being inoffensive but not preachy. And, yes, there are lots of dogs!

Before applying for citizenship, I bought three books from Amazon. I found this one by far the most comprehensive. The author, an immigration lawyer, covers every aspect of the procedure, including helpful sample letters, tips, exam preparation strategy, and when to consult a lawyer. A tip: get the latest edition, because the test has changed recently. My only criticism would be that someone with limited English might have trouble understanding some of it. Other guides focus more on the English and civics test, though this book provides all you need to know, presented in orderly fashion.
Well, first of all this is not a direct guide from USCIS and can not be taken as the direct instruction from official organization. The best way to make it right is to go at uscis.gov and select Naturalization link. All current information about documents and current fees is there.Second: there are no flash cards in this book to learn quickly 100 answers for the same amount of questions. USCIS.gov has this cards and it is easier than trying to memorize every word from this book concerning the test.Third: I never could find a reference in this book to translations of documents (which are not in English) with person who will certify in writing that he(she) is competent in translation(but this, again, in the USCIS's "Guide to Naturalization").And other remarks: Book says "...despite minor errors of spelling, grammar, capitalization, or punctuation - you'll pass". I can say only one thing, that I heard that person who spelled United States of America with not capitalized letter failed the exam. The book says that I'd have to attach a cover letter with description of documents you send there is not such a thing in official Guide to Naturalization. I and my wife put our documents in to envelopes and marked each of them as "Documents of -Person Name- for Naturalization" - that's it. It was accepted without problems. There is a "Sample good moral character letter" in the book. But once again there is not such a thing in the official instructions for Naturalization on uscis.gov.When you go through the pages of this book sometime it feels like book put some fear on you like you did or going to do something wrong. For example book mentioned Adultery saying at the same time that this not an issue anymore. Here is an info I digged out from Internet:"Adultery - Formerly section 101(f)(2) of the Act. Adultery as a mandatory bar to establishing good moral character was repealed by the Act of December 29, 1981. A detailed historical discussion on adultery as it relates to good moral character is contained in Interpretations 316.1(g)(2). Per 8 CFR 316.10(3)(ii), an extramarital affair which tended to destroy an existing marriage shall preclude a finding of good moral character, unless the applicant establishes extenuating circumstances. If the lawful marriage ceased to be viable and intact before the commission of the adultery, such sexual misconduct without cohabitation does not support a finding of lack of good moral character."The book contradict to itself. In one hand it says :"Generally relying solely on memorization of answers makes your task harder..." and on another hand it says "...the officer was looking for simple short answer...". So, as I said check official uscis web site. Besides many names of people in this book are outdated, means the Speaker of the House and others. Do not relay on this book, check all current info for yourself. By the way this book often refers to USCIS info.So as an addition to your studies this book is Ok but NOT A GUIDE. You have to follow instructions posted at USCIS official web site. They are free and true. If you gonna follow this book you may end up with your document package with size of this book which may delay your case. USCIS officers are busy enough to follow their own instructions.
In general, Nolo press writes the best Pro-per books available for the layman. I've been using them for over thirty years, still do, and have a complete library of their publications. They've never let me down as to quality, completeness, and accuracy.
best book about citizenship! Thanks to this book I was able to save like 7k on a lawyer and get everything organized to get my citizenship straighten out.I think this book made my citizenship altogether possible, and I am so grateful of it :)
I used the Nolo books through all my proceeds to become a citizen, and did not make any mistake nor needed to see a lawyer. It is so well done and explained. I used both books, how to become a resident, and then how to become a citizen. Highly recommend them, as well as all the Nolo collection.
very good
A summary of all you need to know about becoming a citizen, plus 100 possible questions that could be on the interview. A must have!

From the Back Cover
This book is a defense of modal realism; the thesis that our world is but one of a plurality of worlds, and that the individuals that inhabit our world are only a few out of all the inhabitants of all the worlds. Lewis argues that the philosophical utility of modal realism is a good reason for believing that it is true. After putting forward the type of modal realism he favors, Lewis answers numerous objections that have been raised against it. These include an insistence that everything must be actual; paradoxes akin to those that confront naive set theory; arguments that modal realism leads to inductive skepticism, or to disregard for prudence and morality; and finally, sheer incredulity at a theory that disagrees so badly with common opinion. Lewis grants the weight of the last objection, but takes it to be outweighed by the benefits to systematic theory that acceptance of modal realism brings. He asks whether these same benefits might be gained more cheaply if we replace his many worlds by many merely 'abstract' representations; but concludes that all versions of this 'ersatz modal realism' are in serious trouble. In the final chapter, Lewis distinguishes various questions about trans-world identity, and argues that his 'method of counterparts' is preferable to alternative approaches.

In the book _On the Plurality of Worlds_, analytic philosopher David Lewis presents his case for modal realism (also called "extreme modal realism", though why it is "extreme" is questioned). As Lewis explains, "This book defends modal realism: the thesis that the world we are part of is but one of a plurality of worlds, and that we who inhabit this world are only a few out of all the inhabitants of all the worlds." Lewis will argue for this position based on the fact of the utility of modal realism for philosophy provides reason to believe that it is true (just as the utility of set theory provides reason to believe that there are sets), then he will consider the common objections to this position and argue against them. Lewis maintains that he does not provide an argument that effectively requires one to believe in a plurality of worlds, but only that he will provide a cost-benefits analysis of this idea. The idea of possible worlds is a recurrent one in the philosophy of Leibniz; however, Lewis does not mention him because he feels that any interpretation he might offer of Leibniz's works would be inadequate. David Lewis (1941-2001) who taught at Princeton was one of the more interesting thinkers in analytic philosophy and this book is certain to remain a classic and can be appreciated even if one cannot go all the way with Lewis in accepting his arguments for modal realism. It should also be pointed out that Lewis' arguments while often subtle can be followed with some effort and that he presents a very effective case. This book consists of four chapters. The first chapter "A Philosophers' Paradise" lays the case for modal realism and argues that a plurality of worlds has utility in philosophy. Lewis begins by noting that he will restrict himself to possibilia and by writing off impossibilia. Lewis then goes on to explain how the usefulness of a plurality of worlds makes it likely for one to think that it is indeed true. Lewis considers the case of a possible worlds analysis of modality (showing how the "diamond" ("possibly") and "box" ("necessarily") symbols are mutually interdefinable and can be understood in terms of possible worlds). Lewis also considers the idea of "closeness" of possible worlds and defines such notions as counterfactuals and verisimilitude. Following this, Lewis considers content of possible worlds and considers analyses of thought, belief, and language. Lewis then shows how modal realism may be used to explain properties (universals and tropes), the fact that possible worlds are isolated and not spatio-temporally connected, and the fact of concreteness, plenitude, and actuality. Lewis maintains that actuality must be understood by making use of an indexical analysis. The second chapter "Paradox in Paradise?" shows some of the commonly made objections to modal realism and argues for why Lewis thinks they are inadequate. Lewis considers the objections made that according to his analysis "everything is actual", objections that try to trap modal realism in paradoxes akin to those of naïve set theory, an objection made that there are more worlds than there are (relying on a paradox in set theory), epistemic objections that we cannot know, objections made that the existence of possible worlds provides a road to skepticism or indifference (i.e. ethical paradoxes brought about by the existence of possible worlds), an objection made that modal realism causes the arbitrariness of this actual world to be lost, and finally "the incredulous stare" (the objection that modal realism flies in the face of common sense). Lewis provides good arguments against most of these objections, but ultimately the most powerful seem to be the objections from common sense. The third chapter "Paradise on the Cheap?" argues against the alternative to Lewis' view which attempts to make use of the utility of a plurality of worlds without committing oneself to modal realism (what Lewis calls "ersatz modal realism"). The "ersatzist program" replaces possible worlds with mere abstract representations. Lewis considers what he considers to be the three leading possibilities for ersatzism: linguistic ersatzism, pictorial ersatzism, and what he calls "magical" ersatzism. He finds each of these alternatives to be problematic and ultimately not be able to provide the benefits of possible worlds given the modal realist understanding. The fourth chapter is "Counterparts or Double Lives?". Here, Lewis considers the question of "counterparts" across worlds and attempts to resolve some of the apparent paradoxes which may ensue. He considers the cases of trans-world identity and overlap. Then, he provides an argument against the existence of trans-world individuals and an argument against what he terms "haecceitism". Finally, he provides an argument against constancy. From these arguments he concludes that his notion of counterparts is the correct analysis and is superior to the alternatives. Thus, stands the case for Lewis' modal realism.Among analytic philosophers in the last century, David Lewis stands out as one of the most important. His arguments for modal realism in this book are fascinating and are important if one seeks to understand the issue of possible worlds. Ultimately even if one finds such objections as ethical paradoxes brought about by modal realism or the common sense objection convincing, Lewis' work still remains important in that it must be seriously considered. It should also be pointed out that while the idea of multiple worlds or universes appears to be playing some role in the more abstract reaches of theoretical physics (including the possibility that quantum mechanics may best be resolved by an appeal to multiple worlds) that these multiple worlds considered by physicists differ from the possible worlds of philosophers such as Lewis. To begin with there is the fact that the possible worlds considered by Lewis are spatiotemporally isolated. This does not appear to be the case with the multiple worlds considered by some physicists. Further, there may be reason to believe that the speculations of certain physicists regarding multiple universes are unwarranted scientifically (perhaps by an appeal to Occam's razor). Nevertheless, Lewis' analysis of possible worlds remains important and should be read by those interested in the further development of analytic philosophy.
Wonderful
It's obvious to me that some of these reviewers don't understand either what Lewis was doing in this book or the standard philosophical response to it. He wasn't arguing that there are multiple universes connected to ours in some way explorable through science. Those would be parts of this world, in Lewis' sense. The worlds he's talking about are possible worlds. They aren't actual. That is, they don't exist in any way spatiotemporally or causally connected with the actual world. And yet he says they're as concrete as we are.Philosophers' responses to this view are incredibly interesting. They think the idea is nuts, and yet they have no way to resist the conclusion that he gives compelling arguments that his view solves numerous philosophical problems that no one has been able to deal with in a perfectly satisfactory way. This doesn't convince many people that his view is correct, but the response has been pretty strong among those who want to use his system without thinking that it's true. They call it a modal fiction, and the view is called fictionalism. This is becoming incredibly influential among metaphysicians.Aside from all that, most metaphysicians today recognize this book as just incredibly fruitful and creative in bringing together so many different strains in metaphysics. He deals with so many problems in such a lucid way that the book serves to introduce many problems in metaphysics, making advances in the discussion even apart from the contribution of his main thesis.
Lewis' work always produces mixed feelings in me. There is a long list of good things to be said on his behalf, and, so far as I can see, only one really bad thing. But the bad thing is bad enough to taint my otherwise unalloyed (and profound) respect and admiration for this superb thinker, quite probably the best philosopher alive, and almost certainly the best I've ever read. (Aaron, if you are reading this, you were right about your teacher; he deserves all the plaudits you kept showering on him, and for all I know he may even be right about the crazy things he says.)First, the pros. Lewis offers a modal metaphysics that is a) technically brilliant, elegant, and well-motivated, b) capable of providing reductive analyses of a vast range of otherwise obscure notions, and c) the best game in town if considered simply on it theoretical merits. He shows how his modal realism can be used to analyze modality (necessity, possibility, and the like, as well as restricted modalities) and mental and semantic content, and to make room for properties and counterfactual claims. He shows how to dissolve the debate among essentialists and anti-essentialists using counterpart theory, how to avoid various apparently serious objections to modal realism, and how to understand the debates about de re modality and "transworld identity". He offers a clear account of ersatzism, especially of the linguistic variety, which (I agree with him in holding) is the only real alternative to his modal realism among the theories so far offered, and is as such clearly an inferior theory. He offers a devastating argument against "magical ersatzism", probably the most commonly held view on modality apart from linguistic approaches. The argument is decisive, I think, and shows that approaches like those of Plantinga or Stalnaker cannot succeed. His modal realism has its limitations; because he cannot help himself to worlds bigger than a certain size and shape, and because he has all the worlds as concrete objects existing "side by side", so to speak, he can't countenance the full range of possibilities that an ersatzist can, and his analyses come apart at the edges. (For instance, the thesis of the plurality of worlds itself is, on Lewis' account, necessarily false; thus he must believe in necessarily false truths. Again, he cannot admit the possibility of two spatiotemporally disconnected universes, or worlds that differ as to which non-spatiotemporal abstracta exist in them.) When these defects are compared against the defects of Lewis' competitors, however, his view emerges as the clear winner.Nonetheless, in the end all of this theoretical advantage is not enough. The thesis of the plurality of worlds is simply incredible. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that its falsehood is something like a Moorean fact; it disagrees so badly with common sense that no philosophical considerations in its favor could constitute an adequate reason for accepting it. Lewis's methodology is right; he proceeds in theorizing by weighing the costs of departure from pretheoretical opinion against the benefits in theoretical economy and utility. Unfortunately, this method is here being used by the wrong person; for all his brilliance, Lewis just doesn't have the *good sense*, or wisdom, to see how crazy his theory is--and this is the only thing that lessens my admiration for him. Faced with the evident inadequacies of all the competitor accounts that Lewis surveys, I am forced to make the choice Lewis says I will be forced to make:"Paradise on the cheap, like the famous free lunch, is not to be had. Make of this what you will. Join the genuine modal realists; or foresake genuine and ersatz worlds alike."Since I cannot join the modal realists (literally, "cannot"; I am psychologically incapable of it), I choose to foresake possibilia altogether. Ersatz or concrete, they must go; and if I can think of no alternative to these approaches--which are after all the only ones now on offer--I shall simply suspend judgement on whether there are really possible worlds of *any* sort, and on their nature and how we can do what we do with them. But I insist on maintaining the hope that some future theorist will tell us how we can help ourselves to possibilia, in a way that we can live with--for it seems absurd to give up the benefits of talking in terms of possibilia just because we have no adequate and credible metaphysics of them.

This has really helped me come to terms with what I am leaving behind, and it is helping me understand that I can move on to a better place. So much insight and understanding, Mr. Mulholland really knows what he is talking about and how to help.If you are in doubt about buying this book watch his speech about his experience leaving his religion, it is on youtube and well worth your time if you are nearing or in a faith transition. .
This is an OUTSTANDING book! It touches on the real issues that you have when walking away from religion, it is not atheist driven, just getting out and finding new paths, the peaks and pitfalls. A must read for anyone interested in a road map to a world without religion. Written in a very positive tone, a pleasure to read.
My wife and I were raised Mormon/LDS. This book has been an indispensable part of our transition away from that religious tradition. At first we had a hard time knowing how to live outside of Mormonism, the only life path we had ever experienced. Reading this book together, as a couple, and discussing the issues, has helped us immensely as we have embarked on a new journey. The book is full of useful tips and I highly recommend it.
Great book, extremely practical and helpful. Nice man too
I found this book very helpful practically in leaving my religion, would recommend if you are thinking about leaving or have left your religion. Easy to follow with good information and it's said in a way that does not make you feel bad for ditching your old beliefs!
Mulholland says it like it is--the realities of leaving religion and helps easethe loneliness of the process and all it entails.
This is going to sound ridiculously hyperbolic, but if I had to pick one book for everyone over the age of 18 to read, it would be this one. It's the most helpful book I've ever read in my life.
For millions of people, religion is no longer working for them. They are harboring deep doubts about their faith and are finding their religion to be inadequate—intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Many are prepared to act on these doubts and begin the process of leaving their religion behind. As the author notes, for those becoming “post-religious, there is very little being written by them or for them.†There are many books available to help manage doubts and stay within a religious tradition. There are also many tomes that aggressively rail against faith. In many ways, this book is in the middle. While it focuses on the reader ready to move away from religion, it is written in a kind, respectful tone and is tailored to help the reader manage through the emotional, difficult issues associated with walking away from something that has meant so much. The author—a former pastor—knows the myriad challenges associated with leaving a religious tradition. As someone who understands how momentous this transition can be, he is a terrific partner and teacher to have at your side. While the decision to walk away is not easy, this book will help you with the transition. As someone who has left religion behind, I can assure you it is worth the hardship. I only wish this book had been written for me a few years ago! This book is an important contribution and is highly recommended.

only the 2nd week of class but this appears to be the exact same as the university's book (at a fraction of the price). Haven't had a chance to check if the problems are the same as the ones for class, but I hope to update soon.
This book is good at many of the first concepts, but once I hit chapter 8-9 it started to get more abstract. I don't think the book did a great job at explaining convolution and calculations around different types of reactors.
I did not realize this was an international edition and has a substantial amount of typos that are critical to the content sometimes. Just be critical about something that doesn't make sense in the book. The preview I saw for this book was the original print, but I guess the paperback is an international version.
Great book. Good material and can sustain damage.
One of the best books on reaction engineering out there. This book has been translated to more languages than any other engineering text - that stands for itself.Easily conveys complex topics, relating to real world situations.I have used this book during my undergraduate course work and a great reference as a professional.
The subject is presented with a panoramic view which makes for a sense that it is within one's intellectual powers.
very good book, a complicated indepth textbook
Best text out there for Residence Time Distribution (RTD) work.

WHAT A MIND SWITCH !!! Though I have not totally conquered the pain in the posterior (which comes, they say from the back... I'd been to several doctors about the pain, went to physical therapy and that made it worse, actually. So this book was recommended to me by a very reliable friend so I'm trying the process. The physical therapist was throwing up his hands and doctors told me to rest it, use heat and take OTC pain pills. Then when those didn't work...here, have some narcotics. Well they made me sicker, darn it.So it is MIND OVER MATTER TIME! I put on my workout clothes and hit the trail. I talk to my brain a lot and I don't care if something thinks I'm nuts, I'm getting better and better! I'm not there yet but I know I'll make it. This has been going on for at least 4 years. I've only done this for about a month.Instead of going to bed with a heating pad I suit up and get moving. What a change from walking a block and having to sit down, sometimes with tears running down my cheeks... to walking a mile telling my brain to fix the ***blasted pain. Shoot, I even do weights, resistance, bike, etc.Thank you Dr. John Sarno, M.D. I feel like I'm living again...and get this, I'm over 70 years old.
This is what finally cured me of my back pain. I tried doctors, yoga, therapy, pilates, new chairs, pillows etc and the pain always eventually came back! finally finally I decided to try this (what can it hurt), and its genius! It took a while to fully implement but I knew right away he was onto something of substance and I now can say that I'm pain free for about a year - it's amazing!
You will be resistant at first. It at first seems like he is saying that all people with back pain are malingerers or have hypochondria. He isn’t! What he is saying is that physical pain is a consequence, not the cause of your back pain. Doctors are treating the consequence as if it’s the cause. The cause is what is known as ‘tension’. Think about it. You pickup a bag of groceries and your back hurts. So you go to the doctor and they treat the back. But the back never caused your pain. What caused the pain was the invisible tension between the back and your action. This tension happened because of psychological emotion. If you realize the cause is psychological not physical, the pain will evaporate. Typically our society looks down on people who experience tension, but support people who experience physical pain, so people won’t admit to feeling psychological tension. Once you do, your physical symptoms will resolve themselves and the psychological tension will reduce too.
The treatment in this book works.I first found this book when I washaving extreme leg and back pain. His Treatment works, IF you work itfaithfully and it is TMS, you will bepain free. For me it took between threeand four weeks and the nine monthand thousands of doctor bill and medsthat did NO good...I was pain free.I still have the book and whenever Ifeel any kind of peculiar discomfort,I grab it off of my shelf and refreshwith the treatment. All of Dr John Sarno's books andteachings are amazing. This book was for my boss whehas been suffering from much backand leg pain. The doctors can notfind anything and the medicationsthey've prescribed do not help.
I bought this copy for a friend. She started to read the first chapter and started to feel her back get better! I had a horrible back spasm 25 years ago that was healed just by reading this book. Is it for everybody? Not necessarily. If tension is making your back ache, or you have a backache and tension in your life, why not read a paperback book to see if it helps? If it doesn't help, you're out less than $10. If it does help, it can save you from years of potentially addicting pain medications and having to have back surgery. No, it isn't "all in your head"--it's in your back. But what's in your life could be causing your back to hurt. Why not give it a try?
I think Dr. Sarno is a bloody genius! I've had lifeolong bouts with low back pain, the last one lasting far too long until today (1.5 yrs) and being far too excruciating (along with neck involvement) -- none of which bouts showed any structural defect! It is completely clear to me now, that my back pain has been caused by my brain, tho triggered in every instance by some physical incident that should have been easily resolved in weeks or a few months at most. Since reading this book, plus The Divided Mind (where he gives you a step-by-step process to follow to get your brain to let go of the false messaging), I have dropped about 50% of my pain in 3 weeks. Amazing! I follow his program religiously every day -- but I also swim three times a week in a warm rehab pool, walk five days a week (1.5 miles), do back stretches and strenghtening 5 nights a week plus arm bands 3 days a week, and see my Alexander Technique teacher twice a month to learn better posture and stress relief techniques.. Sarno's program doesn't mean we don't have to exercise moderately and sanely, or don't have to eat nutritionally and well! We all know that! Sarno adds the final key element for me, to the advice and how-tos for "living a long but healthy lifestyle", a loosely-goosey phrase much bandied about these days.

Interesting hypothesis about Australian Aboriginal agricultural society.Pascoe makes the claim that Australian Aboriginal society, in part, was an agricultural one rather than being a wholly hunter-gatherer one. The claims seem to be strongest in the Murray-Darling basin. The difficulty in sustaining this hypothesis is the degradation of oral history due to genocide, and the destruction of Aboriginal artefacts to forestall Native Title claims. History is being erased before our eyes. Also, the prevalent accepted wisdom that Aborigines were hunter-gathers makes it difficult for this hypothesis to be investigated properly.
Sensational ideas presented non-sensationally, this book is a must read for everyone who has not yet read it.I'm a white Australian woman aged 70+, born and raised in Tasmania, the most Anglo-minded of the states, whose history of harsh treatment of convict and Aboriginal people is as dark as the worst excesses of cruelty on 'the mainland' as we call it. My urban grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles were well educated, many in professional occupations. In my day, as Bruce Pascoe reminded me, our history courses were anglo- and euro-centric. The senior history teacher was so very boring that I opted out of history asap, which I now regret, but even if I had stuck with it, I now know that I would have learned very little about our indigenous people because, basically that teacher and the rest of my teachers even through tertiary level, knew very little of the ancient civilisation that prevailed before europeans come to the island continent now known as Australia. I knew plenty about the Ancient Egytians, Etruscans, Mesapotamians, Greeks, Romans and a bit about medieval Europe, European colonisation of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, but almost nothing about the Australian Aborigines - they were so little mentioned it was as if there was nothing much to tell, anyway. (Incidentally my education rarely mentioned the Americas, either, except as an object of european exploration and colonisation) Though still below voting age I remember the heated discussion about the May 1967 referendum which passed to at last count Aboriginal people in the national census. Until I went to live in an Outback mining centre as a young bride, I had never seen, let alone met, anyone Aboriginal. For a long time now (not by choice but hubby's work) I've been living outside Australia, and so though I've learned a bit about these people along the way, I've missed much of the daily talk on radio and tv that might have taught me more sooner, and introduced me to the things in this book far sooner. Like many readers, I found this book fascinating, exciting and some how hopeful for a better future as more non-Aboriginal Aussies come to understand not only enormity of what happened to the Aboriginal civilisation, (which we can't unwind back to pre-1788) I hope the facts and ideas in this book lead to wider understanding of more appropriate land management across our damaged continent, and respect for our Aborigines' history and achievements.
My Green friends who place eucalypt forest gone wild at the pinnacle of their value system have got it badly wrong. Swathes of Australia only look like that today because of the dastardly deeds of the invaders of 1788 and histories written by the victors to eliminate the vanquished. In Dark Emu, Bruce Pascoe builds a comprehensive account of the farming, settlement and other markers of great civilisation that fill out the picture expounded in Bill Gammage's The Greatest Estate on Earth. Importantly Pascoe points the way to reviving this most neglected basket of foods which should be a cornerstone of international cuisine.Fortunately there is no shortage of evidence once people like Pascoe and Gammage start digging, from explorers' and settlers' diaries to scientific examination of remnant vegetation. The eight chapters of Dark Emu have copious footnotes pointing to an extensive bibliography. The first five chapters break the data up under broad headings: Agriculture, Aquaculture, Population and Housing, Storage and Preservation, Fire. The final three return to and develop issues raised in the introduction about the way this has been hidden so as to denigrate indigenous civilisation in the interests of the land acquisition goals of the invasion, together with how the very different indigenous value system had been worked out and flourished over 50,000 years.Books like this should be compulsory reading for all Australians.
