My son loves Garfield and he went from a student in "reading recovery" at school (that means below grade level) to a student who reads 2-3 grades above his grade level because of his desire to read MORE Garfield than I was willing to read to him at night. Luckily, unlike many book series, this series goes on forever! And Jim Davis, bless his heart, has made it so affordable to collect his books in these fat cat 3-packs (3 books in one cover) and Amazon has made it even MORE affordable. Unlike some books made for kids (like Cap'n Underpants, for example) there are no misspelled words as the author tries to mimic what a kid's comic would look like, there is little if any violence like in some comic books, no scantily clad comic character women, no racey themes are statements.... It's just perfect for a kid in elementary school learning to read... and now and then, I'll read a few pages... and grandma loves to steal one, too... so it's just nice for all ages. So glad we stumbled on to these! It's a long-lived interest that has helped him so much!
I thought these books were great! They were hilarious and I understood all of the jokes. I highly reccomend these books for grades 3-8. These books are really popular at my middle school. I love how they combined three of the books into one. I also love how Garfield insultes Jon’s intellect. By the way this was only thing I got from my parents for Christmas!!! I will ask my mom to buy me more for my birthday as the birthday gift. Jim Davis is my favorite author.(This is probably the only thing that I will probably get for my birthday*sigh*)
Oh My Dear Fat Sarcastic, Non-Empathic Garfield, How You do Make My Son and Me Guffaw with Laughter!I have been purchasing these wonderful FAT CAT 3-PACKS for quite some time. My son is twelve and has been reading GarfieldFat Cat since he was a Tot, and continues reading as a "Tween." For those who don't know, the book comes as one thick book, thus the "3-pack" although to be perfectly honest, that could seem to be a bit misleading. My first purchase many years ago had me thinking I was getting three books. I was very happy when I saw just how thick (a good inch or more) the big soft bound comic strip book was; so, no complaints here.He had asked for Volume 1, but I couldn't understand why it was so expensive at some places and yet hard to find at others. Well, I found GARFIELD FAT CAT 3-PACK VOL 1 here, and decided to buy it used. It arrived in about two weeks in almost perfect/new condition.
I had no idea this existed until I heard it mentioned on Family Guy fairly recently. It is a taste creative genius that I did not expect from this old family classic comic writer. I love when you find these diamonds in a sea of norms. This was an artist that wanted to try something else because he can. He earned it. Thank you, Jim and everyone else that contributed.
Ordered to replace the one the kids wore out at my parents' place-- that we had from when I was a kid!Got the package, opened it up, and I thought my five year old son was going to explode. (With joy.) Once he calmed down enough to be understandable, he was very happy that the "Great Garfield book from grandma and granpa's!" is now at our house.Down side: he is even more of a Garfield fanboy than before.
I bought this book as a gift for my 8-year-old grandson who adores Garfield. He loved it! I was a bit anxious at first since they are labeled "graphic," but they are completely fine. They read just like one of his cartoons. They just happen to be in a book form.
I have been buying the separate Garfield books as they are released in Kindle format on Amazon, but for some reason seven random volumes (2,3,4,19,26,37,38) are restricted to the USA only. I have tried contacting Amazon and the publishers several times but no one can provide an answer why. The complete set of separate Garfield books can currently only be bought in the USA, and I have wasted my money. If you plan to buy a collection of Garfield books, buy the more recent 'Garfield Complete Works' instead.
I purchased for my 11 year old son who is obsessed with Garfield. This book is filled with classic Garfield comics, just like in the "Funny" Section of the Sunday paper, only now all in one place. We own several volumes of the Garfield Fat Pack books, and he said so far this is his favorite. I love that I can find on Amazon where I cannot find in stores locally. Well priced and fast shipping was an added bonus as this mom forgot as a Christmas gift. It arrived in plenty of time.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

Written amidst Shakespeare's tragedies, "Measure For Measure" is the Bard's last comedy and perhaps his darkest. In all Shakespearean comedy, conflict, villainy, or immorality disrupt the moral order, but harmony ultimately prevails. Not so with this comedy. As one critic has it, "Measure" leaves playgoers with many questions and few answers. Or does it? More about that in a moment. First, about the title. It's from the Bible. In the Old Testament there's "breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth" (Leviticus 24). And, from the New Testament, "what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again" (Mathew 5). It's the theme of the play, but, as we shall see, it never gets the results hoped for, until the very end, when, to quote from another of Shakespeare's plays, "mercy seasons justice."The good Duke of Vienna, Vincentio, is concerned with the morals of his city. He enacts a number of reforms, then takes a sabbatical, and tells his deputy governor, Angelo, to see that the reforms are enforced. But Angelo goes too far: he enforces the law to the letter and shows no mercy for violators. Claudio is a victim of Angelo's strict enforcement policy. He's betrothed to Juliet, who is pregnant with his child. Because they are not yet married, he's arrested for fornication and sentenced to death by decapitation. Enter Isabella, Claudio's sister and the play's heroine. She's a young novice preparing to become a nun on the very day of his execution, and makes an appeal to Angelo for leniency. Her plea is reminiscent of Portia's words to Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice." "Merciful heaven, / Thou rather with thy sharp and sulfurous bolt / Splits the unwedgeable and gnarled oak / Than the soft myrtle; but man, proud man, / Dressed in a little brief authority, / Most ignorant of what he's most assured / His glassy essence, like an angry ape / Plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven / As makes the angels weep." As with Shylock, Angelo is unmoved. Rather, he offers to release Claudio in exchange for sex. Isabella refuses, even though it means her brother's death. "Better it were a brother died at once, than that a sister, by redeeming him, should die forever."The good Duke, meanwhile, has not taken a sabbatical after all, but has been masquerading as a friar. But for what purpose? To determine if Angelo will do the right thing? Shakespeare doesn't say. He advises Isabella to trick Angelo by agreeing to meet with him and then sending another woman in her place. Enter Mariana. She was once betrothed to Angelo, until Angelo learned her dowry was lost at sea, at which point he called off the engagement. Mariana agrees to assume Isabella's identity and sleep with Angelo to secure Claudio's release. The bed trick goes as planned, but Angelo reneges on his promise and orders the immediate execution of Claudio. The Duke intervenes and Claudio is spared, but neither Angelo nor Isabella know this; they think Claudio is dead. The Duke then informs the deputy that he is returning home.Angelo and court officials greet the Duke at the city gates. Isabella and Mariana are also there, and call upon the Duke to redress their wrongs. Instead, the Duke has Isabella arrested and orders Angelo to marry Mariana. Once they are married, he sentences Angelo to death for the murder of Claudio. At this point, Shakespeare takes some liberties that many think makes for an implausible and unsatisfactory ending. In his succinct and compelling book, "Shakespeare and Forgiveness," Professor William H. Matchett makes sense of the play's incongruities, as we shall see in a moment.Isabella is released. Upon hearing of Angelo's death sentence, she goes before the Duke to plea for mercy. But instead of telling Isabella her brother is alive, the Duke proposes marriage. Nothing has prepared the audience for this. Matchett suggests: "The point is that Isabella must consider Claudio dead if Shakespeare is not to lose his big scene: her true saintliness is only shown in her forgiving Angelo despite her thinking he has killed Claudio. The Duke must remain an almost inhuman manipulator to keep her in this position. And so he does."Isabella (kneeling): "Most bounteous sir, / Look, if it please you, on this man condemned, / As if my brother lived. I partly think / A due sincerity governed his deeds, / Till he did look on me. Since this is so, / Let him not die. My brother had but justice, / In that he did the thing for which he died. / For Angelo, / His act did not overtake his bad intent, / And must be buried but as an intent / That perished by the way. Thoughts are not subjects, / Intents but merely thoughts." The Duke pardons Angelo, and once again proposes marriage. Isabella answers with silence. Comments Matchett: "Shakespeare has staged a most dramatic forgiveness scene at the climax of his play, but at the cost of establishing Isabella's moral integrity by damaging the Duke's. It throws the whole mutuality of their marriage into doubt."He adds: "Perhaps we should accept the created image without worrying about the Duke's character. . . . One has to admit, however, that the Duke's proposal--`I have a motion much imports your good'--is about as arrogantly self-centered as they come, while the silence with which Isabella meets it, Shakespeare having provided her with no response, has allowed many modern productions to substitute denial for consent. This no doubt violates the assumption of Shakespeare's play, but it allows recognition of the discomfort created by the forgiveness scene." The play ends with Isabella learning her brother is alive and well, but the question of her marrying the Duke is a matter of interpretation. However, in the final analysis, the full measure of forgiveness outweighs Angelo's measure of misdeeds, and trumps the play's defects.

Reading this book forced me to review why I was writing and why I wanted to publish. I now have a much more focused plan and I know why I’m pursuing all of this.I found Ms. Friedman while I was working on my manuscript and searching for advice about copyright issues. The article I found led me to her website where I reviewed the services she offered. When I completed the first draft of my book I decided to read her book before I setup an appointment to discuss my project with her. I'm very glad I did. I wrote several technical books many years ago which gave me some experience with traditional publishing, but I knew I had no clue what the options were for self publishing. I also wanted advice on the choice to pursue traditional versus self publishing. I'm very glad I read her book before I talked with her. I got many of my questions answered from her book which made my time talking with her much more valuable. In thinking about how best to describe why I would recommend this book, I came up with three words: relevance, brevity and clarity. This book describes what you need to understand about the way the publishing world works today, whether that lines up with your romantic visions or not. The information is very relevant to someone like me that is working on getting published for the first time in a very long time. Ms. Friedman doesn’t waste time with lots of talk, the information is delivered quickly and she makes it easy to understand. She is also very clear about what you need to know and what you need to do. If you want someone to help you prepare to really get something published, you should read this book.I want to be clear that not all of what I read was what I wanted to hear. Some of Ms. Friedman’s most specific advice required that I carefully review why I was writing and what I was trying to accomplish. I was very excited to have finished my first draft of my manuscript and I wanted to know what I needed to do next to get published. Instead, after reading this book, I realized I was not at all prepared for publishing. I needed to rethink my entire project. I also needed to create a website, something that was not at all part of my plan. You can’t get 120,000 words together without caring about your project, so it was upsetting to read that I had to take on another project to setup a website. But it was what I really needed to hear, and what I needed to do next. Here are some specific topics discussed that were useful to me, things that I encourage you to think about:Writing is not for the weak. Indeed, any creative project, especially if it will be put in front of the public, requires a strong will.Your motivation to write has to come from within. Yes, very much so. You have to want to do this, there are too many obstacles and too few rewards to getting your work published, and you have to believe in your work. What do you really want out of this process? If you don’t know what you are after, how will you know if you ever get it?Passion has become a cheap word. This is my favorite, so many people are pursuing their passion, but do they ever really get anything done, or is it really a code word for wanting to do what you want when you want until it gets difficult? Why are you in a rush? No one is waiting for my writing project to be published. This isn’t me being defeatist or my lacking passion, it is just a simple fact. Why not take the time to find persons that know more than I do about publishing in the digital world and learn what I need to do to really find and reach my audience?Don’t focus on just one book. Another simple fact, whatever I’m writing may or may not have much of an audience, and endlessly working on it may not change that. Better to see this as a process, not to publish my current project, but a process to keep producing work I care about, a process to get my work to those that are interested.Your platform should be as much of a creative exercise and project as the work you produce. Instead of looking at the need for a website, for example, as some sort of evil conspiracy forced on you by the corrupt publishing world, why not see it as another outlet for your creativity, your vision?Come up with a marketing plan that you can execute on your own. You, as the author, are the best person to find your audience, don't rely on a publisher to do this for you.Specific advice on marketing, along with this important observation, “so few authors do any of thisâ€. Get your website established and get professional headshots to use in all your online and offline marketing efforts.I also recommend what she says in her Afterword, that at some point, we have to do what we do because we want to, not just to get published. It is easy to get lost in all the noise that surrounds any form of media. You can find all my book reviews at brianhitchcock.net and brianrhitchcock.com.
Jane Friedman has a background in publishing, including several years as Editor of Writer's Digest, so when she writes about the publishing industry, she's certainly got the background. She also has a Twitter following many would envy, and a successful blog.Publishing 101 is a compilation of posts from her blog, and is well worth reading, particularly for what she calls beginning or early career writers. She makes clear that there is no "secret" to becoming a best-selling author, and the journey is going to be different for everyone. This was especially illustrated when she was talking about how she gained 100,000+ Twitter followers--she recognises she got a lot of those followers because she was the editor of Writer's Digest, which isn't a path open to everyone! The focus is on those who are aiming for a traditional publishing contract, although a large part of the book is actually talking about marketing. In this she reinforces the advice I've read from other authors on the importance of having your own self-hosted website/blog and mailing list, not relying on external sites like Facebook (particularly relevant given the changes coming to Facebook in early 2015 which will affect the ability of authors to promote).Overall, recommended for people seeking reliable information about publishing.
There is a lot of really great advice here and a lot of expertise in the author's areas of specialization. One big issue is that the author has a serious fixation on WordPress, presumably because that's what she's used to, but WP is not a good solution for beginners. There are others out there that are fast, intuitive, and with an easy learning curve, and which support advanced features as well. Some are inexpensive apps with permanent licenses while others offer quick plug-and-play solutions for a small monthly fee. Ask around and do an online search and you'll find quite a few.The author also mentions Flash, but this is dying technology that has serious security issues. It has been replaced by HTML5 animation, which works for all devices. There are a number of easy and intuitive HTML5 apps available which you can use to create animated text and images, interactive slide shows and more, and which are far easier to use than Flash. The importance of this type of interactive content on your site is that that can really spice things up, keep visitor on the site longer, and boost its search engine rankings. The author also includes misplaced warnings about "self hosting." If you work with a large hosting service such as GoDaddy, security and backup services are available, as well as at least one email account for your domain, which is included with all packages). As for the advice about writing, blogging, strategies, publishing and so-on, the author is a definite expert. Th is is what provides the true value of this book.

The practice guide covers a lot of good content, especially for beginners to the field. Really appreciate that the quizzes after every chapter also come with an explanation for each answer. Same with the exam practice book. I used this as supplemental study material in addition to my aPHR course material (12 week online course through DePaul University) and the aPHR practice app by Distinctive HR.Losing a star because:1) some of the book quiz/exam material didn't match up to the CD material. Also, some of the answers in the practice guide and exam practice were incorrect.2) some practice questions was about content that wasn't covered in the book. However, this was also the case with the app I downloaded.I will be reaching out to the manufacturer about this. But overall, this was good practice material.Update: Took the exam on 8/2018 and passed! I highly recommend the combination of studying course material, the app, and this product. Even though there were a few flaws with this study product, all 3 study materials covered different topics or added concepts and perspectives that were beneficial for the exam.
This book has good content. However, some of the questions at the end of the chapter have nothing to do with that chapter. I am reading the practice exam book now and have found many errors. Again, some of the questions and terms used in the practice exams were not in the book. Also, some of the answers in the answer key have the wrong letter and if you read the in-depth answer key a different answer is given. One question was asked twice and each one had a different answer. Many errors!
Great information and helped me pass my exam; however, it’s unfortunate the author and/or publishing company didn’t employ a proofreader, as the text was rife with sloppy errors and typos.
Used this for studying for aPHR exam. This book was a lot harder than the actual exam in my opinion
Love this book. Great study tool
Great study guide and I would highly recommend it
No surprise with the purchase it arrived as advertised

Overall, the book was very insightful. I thought MacIntosh did a great job painting the picture of the dysfunction, politics, and general nervous spiral that overtook AB. However, I would have liked to hear a lot more about the AB/Miller beer wars during the reign of The Third. That would have made for very interesting reading, rather than just saying they hit 50% market share. As for the Inbev part of the book, the acquisition happend very fast, but the writing slowed down considerably and jumped around without much intention. We got deep dives into the thoughts and feelings of a host of characters who had been all but absent before the end, so I found myself not caring about the perspectives of some of the random execs that were included (especially in light of how much of the book focused on the relationship between the Third and the Fourth). Could have used more "character development" if she wanted us to care more about their opinions later.
Very important book on the evolution of American industry, in this case how the world's most valuable brand with 50% domestic market share became vulnerable to take-over and was eventually swallowed up by a more nimble, focused, and global competitor. We learn how the Busch family made the take-over financially possible by reducing their holdings to single digits over the years. Maybe more importantly the family also lost their way, focusing more on inter-family squabbles, new wives ands girlfriends, travel, avoiding each other, baseball and zoos. Setting up a small JV with Inbev led to the elephant getting his nose under the tent and eating all the peanuts. The AB take-over story got almost no press as it unfolded in 2009 due to intense business network talking head fixation on the meltdown and recession. Julie Macintosh has gotten some great insider accounts and also did her homework with comprehensive reporting. I understand she has a financial background but has focused here more on the personalities, interactions, and agendas of the family, board, and long time employees. Perhaps her editors told her that every balance sheet in the book would cut sales in half.We get a great story of how families operate, especially wealthy ones that have legacy and fiduciary objectives. The Busch family and the controlling families of Modelo (who were briefly a partner and potential white knight) showed that they will always default to a course of inaction, as the stars need perfect alignment for agreement across the generations. The Brazilian financiers had no such constraints. They moved decisively and understood perfectly not only the financials but how a decision would be made in this circumstance. Remarkably they have been allowed and even encouraged by governments to consolidate the brewing industry to an unprecedented level. The corollary to Inbev buying AB would be Toyota buying Ford or Lenovo buying Dell.
The hallmark of this excellent book is equal parts the intricate, detail-laden reporting that author Julie MacIntosh has painstakingly compiled and the masterful profiles she's written of this takeover tale's main protagonists. And, to do any book on this subject justice, the profiles you need to nail are those of A-B's father and son CEOs, August Busch III and August Busch IV, known indelibly as the 'The Third' and 'The Fourth.'What's she's put down on paper here is a fascinating take on those two. As one close source says to MacIntosh, what transpired between those two is 'Shakespearean...I just haven't decided which play.' Conventional wisdom would write a 'Crazy and Lazy' saga (as the two were known on Wall Street): that a mercurial, hyper-focused Third drove A-B to greatness and a detached, debauched Fourth let it fall quickly into InBev's hands. The truth is far more complicated. MacIntosh makes a compelling case that is was the Third's insular nature and megalomaniacal tendencies that led him to shun deals, go it alone and focus almost entirely on domestic dominance. Meanwhile, the beer world shifted under his feet: two forward-thinking international giants - SAB/Miller and InBev - emerged right in front of his dismissive eyes. By the time The Fourth took the reins, A-B's goose was cooked. They were just the last ones to know it.I listened to the unabridged audio version of this book. It was fantastic! I highly recommend Joyce Bean's excellent narration. It is 13.5 hours of pure enjoyment. It's quite a feat to have a female narrator do justice to what is effectively an all-male tale - it's a book filled with quote after quote (both attributed and juicy off-the-record stuff) in alpha male voices. Bean drops her voice an octave to deliver those words, punctuating them with a supercilious air while embodying the words of The Third. Well done.

Surprisingly bad book. I purchased after briefly reading the reviews. After reading parts of the book I could not believe it has this many great reviews. Going back and looking in detail I see almost all the reviews are plant. Either the person has only done one review in their life or they are a hired reviewer that only gives 5 star reviews. Next time I will be more careful. The book starts well. In standard "for dummies" fashion the first chapter is introduction, terminology, and the like. Good and useful. The second chapter is setting up the development environment. It is up to date and focuses on Android Studio rather than Eclipse like most of the other Android books. I was able to successfully the development environment. Chapter three is a Hello World application and an explanation of all the build files. Again, useful. I was able to build the app and launch in an emulator. The book starts going downhill with Chapter 4 about the User Interface. It does not take the time to give the big picture and instead dives in with do this and change this without telling why. Typos and incomplete explanations abound. I looked on the book website for an errata sheet but found none. I spend a couple of hours trying to work my way through and gave up. The information as presented does not work.Frustrated I gave up on the book and wrote this review. Too bad. The book had a good start.
Generally I am pretty fond of the dummies books but I was not as impressed with the one for Android app development. Writing programs for Android has a lot of variables and this book did not in my opinion do a very good job at making it easy to learn anything other than your most basic of programs. That said I have yet to find a textbook I like that would be easy for beginning students to learn from. Most books take the easy way out and put out a disclaimer that they expect you already know another programming language and then assume students should be able to fill in gaps that they don't explain very well. Very limited the knowledge you pick up from this book. I think it would have been better to go more in depth with either a larger book with more details or break it in a series of books. But more explanations, examples, and exercises are needed to make programming books a useful teaching tool.
This book starts strong until chapter 6 and then quickly weakens. Forget about getting the code samples, featured in the book, to compile. You will find the guidance and instructions woefully inadequate. Following the author's directions will not produce the same results for you as the results appear in the book. The author omits relevant pointers and thorough step-by-step instructions for typing the code into Android Studio editors. On one occasion I simply tried to make simple changes specified by the author and got errors like "Error: Default Activity Not Found" after the application failed to launch. I would expect sometime *VERY* soon Android App Development for Dummies 4th Edition available free of charge to anyone that purchased this 3rd edition.
I've only read the Table of Contents and the First Chapter, but I have quite a bit of confidence that this book will put me on a solid path to App. Development. Chapter 2 promises to provide me with the information to download all the software I will need from Google for free. Dummies books always provide dependable, and expert information. I'm sure that this one will be no different.
I have been trying to learn Android programming and purchased this book to help guide me and my feelings are mixed. Just to be clear, I have a background in programming with knowledge of Python, basic C and very basic Java. When I read a programming book, I want to see examples of what we are doing and clear explanations of why we are doing it. For example, if it says "write this code", I like to understand exactly why I am writing it and what it means. I guess I am anal, but I really want to understand because I believe that this is how you learn best.In the case of this book, I feel like it is too focused on building specific apps and the steps required. It is does not provide much insight into exactly "why" you perform certain steps, and for me this is the frustration. I really want the why and this book feels light in this area. As a result, I feel like the book clearly explains how to build certain apps, but misses the target on helping people understand Android development.I think that the question comes down to what you want to accomplish. If you are looking for a book that walks through the development of certain apps then this book is for you. If your interest is really about learning Android programming then I would advise that you look elsewhere.
Incredibly disappointing book. As several reviewers have now noted, it starts off strong with various explanations about how Android works. However, as you move forward in the book, the example code becomes buggy and very little explanation is provided. Basically the book just says "type what's in this box", gives a few lines of cursory information about what you've just typed, and that's it. I don't see how anyone could learn to develop Android apps using this book, even very simple apps. Don't waste your money.

A reprint of a ground-breaking and prescient book about the perils of fighting in Vietnam. Using the French experience, Bernard B. Fall correctly analyzed and predicted the trouble Americans would face by taking on a battle-hardened and experienced Vietnamese foe. Specifically, he pointed out that America would be facing the exact same enemies on the same terrain and using the same tactics they used to defeat the French. He warned of the pitfalls of "search and destroy" tactics in "revolutionary war." Ironically, Fall was killed while observing an American amphibious search-and-destroy operation along the "street without joy" two decades after he began writing about the futility of such operations. Had General William C. Westmoreland heeded, instead of ignoring, Fall's suggestion, the Vietnam War might have ended quite differently; it certainly would have been less costly and less divisive. This was a classic case of "Lessons Un-learned" by the U.S. military.
I found "Street Without Joy" fascinating - a cross between the summation of after-action battle reports and a history book outlining the French debacle in Indochina. Readers clearly see that Laos and Vietnam were trying to free themselves from French colonial rule after World War II...the French, Chinese and Japanese were all defeated and kicked out during the war; the author maintains that if France would have granted both Laos and Vietnam their independence in 1945 - so many lives could have been saved. It was obvious that the French did not have enough troops, equipment and supplies to support their mission within Indochina, and were not trained or ready to fight a guerrilla style jungle war. Conventional thinking and fighting were no match against an elusive enemy in the thick jungles, who chose the time and place for battle. As time went on, there were so many lessons to be learned and opportunities for change, yet the French insisted on the status quo - going so far as to train their Vietnamese allies in those same methods and tactics. As a result, almost 100,000 French soldiers lost their lives during their 8 year battle against those forces loyal to Ho Chi Minh. When the French were defeated in 1954, Laos received sovernty and Vietnam was split at the 17th parallel; the southern half of the country still opposing those communist of the North. The United States came into the picture soon afterwards, providing advisors, equipment and funds to support the South's battle against the North Communists. However, there was no interest in studying the French battles and learning from their mistakes, so, history was to repeat itself...and so it did! When Bernard Fall published this book in 1961, he states in it that the South had already lost the war with the North and cites examples of why it will happen - including outright lies by both the press and government to name a few.I learned so much from reading "Street Without Joy" and feel that if the U.S. Government would have listened to this author or read his work, then acting upon the many lessons learned, I might not have had to serve in that war as an infantry soldier during 1970 and many of those 58,000+ soldiers might still be living.I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about Indochina and the French occupation.John Podlaski, authorCherries - A Vietnam War Novel
Being a military historian l cannot more highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a complete understanding of this war. Had those in the administration of Pres. Johnson read and followed the analysis and recommendations in this book, the outcome would have been much different. I interviewed Gen. Westmoreland for two hours in 1981. He had read the book and directed all in his command to read it. Unfortunately the advisors at Defence and State were ignorant of Mr. Falls book.Mr. Fall spent considerable time gathering facts from all involved in this conflict. He presents the military actions in a highly readable manner, with indepth explanations of the tactics used by all sides and the consequences of the battles tactically and politically. He gives an excellent view of the strategic issues and the political motives of the French and North Vietnamese. His recommendations and observations to those who fight in Revolutionary Wars as he calls them, are applicable to the several wars currently being fought by the United States, wars which he predicted the U.S. would be almost constantly involved in after our defeat in Viet Nam. Will we ever learn from history?
All the histories of American involvement in Vietnam mention this book, usually reverently, for its coverage of the French war in Vietnam. It's really good, with both the feel of an insider who knows the people and situation, and the big picture view. Fall sees it as a political war that the military can't win/couldn't win without immense changes elsewhere. But he's totally anti-Communist, while respecting the dedication and ability the Viet Minh showed. One bad point: this isn't a report on the whole 8 years the French fought there, just in depth reporting on a few campaigns in 1950 and later. One fascinating point: the potted bio on the back shows he was based in the US through most of the 50's and 60's, until he died walking with an American unit, killed by a land mine, so his view isn't totally French and foreign.
