Purchased as a gift for my husband who does homebrewing. Much of the information at the beginning is fairly elementary for those who have been brewing for a while, so this is great for anyone who's new to the process. The illustrations are beautiful and there's some great info on varieties of hops, etc for more advanced brewing.
I love beer and I have been interested in learning about the brewing process. This book was very easy to read and understand. I would recommend to anyone who would like a better understanding of what it takes to brew your own beer.

I enjoyed these books, but am left ultimately extremely frustrated at their author.1) She begins with A Man of Some Repute, interesting, except the end, which stops mid-story... not a cliffhanger, but mid-story.2) She continues in A Youthful Indiscretion, a novella, which doesn't show up as part of the "A Very English Mystery" series. So - to be honest - only a search through all of her books results in finding the bridge between A Man of Some Repute and A Question of Inheritance, and that's after you've read the second of the two novels, and even the novella is unfinished.3) Then in A Question of Inheritance, she begins in the middle of a story - because, as I mentioned - only two books show up as part of this series so you have no idea how the story reached THIS point. AQoI also has intriguing characters, story and setting, but - again - it is *unfinished*.4) After all this - two novels, bracketing that elusive novella diligent readers will find and read after the second novel - she leaves both her characters and her readers hanging in the wind with so many threads completely unresolved, no idea what happens next to the characters, the castle or the village (and its endearing, if shameful, gossips). No. That's that. No matter how incomplete and unsatisfying we're left, she moves on to what I consider inferior mysteries. (I've looked on Amazon.co.uk, and the US site doesn't seem to be missing any more of this series.)I'd happily read more - as I enjoy the characters, setting and stories a great deal - which is the only reason this book gets three stars.That said, I am beyond disappointed that Ms. Edmondson abandoned this 'series' for novels with less interesting characters, setting and plots.I would *not* recommend even starting this 'series' unless Ms. Edmonson decides to pick them back up and embrace and continue with the characters, setting and similar stories.
What a lovely surprise! I've been sampling mystery authors, looking for new, good writers to add to my old faithfuls, and Edmondson is now on my list. The writing is graceful (and, hallelujah, grammar and punctuation are perfect), and the plot is indeed, as promised, Very English. It's the primary characters, of course, who ultimately make the book so satisfying. They are real and delightful. I can't wait for the next in the series.
I bought this book because I love cozy English mysteries set in old houses in the countryside. This book started okay but then it became so boring and bogged down in unnecessary details.Lots of talk and very little action, except at the end. I stopped reading it at about 25%, then picked the book up again several months later. I read more interesting books in the meantime. But I decided I had to finish this book and slogged through it. By the time I finished, I was exhausted by sheer boredom and lack of any real interest in most of the characters who all seemed wooden (except Georgia). At the end, I really didn't care who had killed the Earl, who was a despicable character anyway. Then on the last page, I found out that after the tough slog through this book, the story of the Selchester family wasn't over yet! It continues in "A Question of Inheritance". I think I'll skip the sequel.
This author could have benefitted from a good editor, like one who asked, “Are you SURE a body buried less than seven years would decay down to bones? What about the clothing on top of the body? Yeah, we know the stuff on the bottom decays first.†Also, a good editor would have pointed out that early on she says that the main female character resents the presence of the main male character, but within a few pages of this assertion, she’s sucking up madly to him—walking with him, going to a coffee shop with him, etc. There’s more. Suffice it to say that this is a poorly crafted book.
This author has great style and control of her story from every angle. Wish she hadn't just passed away this Jan. 2016---would have loved to read her books for many years. Am sorry for her family at this time of grief. This series transports you to a period post war in England that is different from other authors take on life after the war. It deals with survival of children and altered lives from the hardships people dealt with at any level or status of life. It exposes the good in humanity and the indifference of some of the affluent. It lets us peak behind the curtain of society at that time and see what is still expected of a single young woman and retired secret agents of this period. This book was terrific as was the next book, A Question of Inheritance.I hope you all get to read them and share them with other good books lovers. Elizabeth Edmondson will be missed.
A man of some repute starts out in a gentle, relaxing style. It seems to me to be a very good representation of post World War 2 England. There's still food and gas shortages, but our hero, Hugo, is traveling to the country estate of the missing Earl of Selchester. He's been injured doing some secret work for the British government, and is therefore banished to a desk job in the country. Traveling with him is his teenage orphaned sister, Georgia, who he barely knows.Upon arrival he meets the occupants of the estate, namely Freya, who is the missing Earl's neice. She is seemingly staying at the estate while researching and writing a history of the Selchester family tree.Gradually we come to know all the characters in greater depth. We also gather an understanding of how life is lived in rural England among the monied. Before very long a skeleton is discovered and the conclusion is that a murder has been committed.Hugo turns out to be intelligent, curious, and observant. He's a puzzle-solver. Before very long.he and Freya, along with the surprisingly helpful sister Georgia, start investigating the murder.I like the book a lot, although I could have asked for a more detailed ending. Perhaps there is a sequel in the works. If there is, I definitely would buy it.

Greg and Lynn McDonald have not only written the book they wished had been available to them years ago, they now offer their insights to conservative parents who have walked and will walk this path when they find out their child is LGBTQ. "Embracing the Journey" is an excellent resource filled with raw and honest accounts of their mistakes, as well as their good decisions.Each chapter ends with a recap of insights and challenges so the reader might consider how best to apply the information to their own situations. For decades, Christian parents have been offering shaming books to their children, hoping to "fix" them, change their orientation or live lives of celibacy. I have reviewed most of the books in that genre and they are generally thinly constructed with poor theology or little knowledge of what sexual orientation is. It contains all the advice, examples and, most importantly to us, forms for jointly purchasing a home and splitting our income and expenses. In addition, there are many useful stories and factoids, including that cohabitation was illegal in all states until 1970.We also found the Kindle version helpful since it allowed us each to enter highlights and notes, and search those highlights and notes or other words or phrases on all of our iDevices and computers with the Kindle App.
I needed to know what to write to a tenant who is unruly or one that did not follow the guidelines. This gives me the opportunity to discuss things that normally I did not know how to say. Analyzing the situation of married couples and able to provide the right things to day about boundaries and respect. Excellent book

Here is the entire book in one sentence: decide what the most important thing your business does/should be doing is and then find really good people to do it for you.In spite of flippant comments throughout that say, "Oh, if you're a solopreneur, this works for you, too," it's not true. It all boils down to hiring other people and then delegating to them.I can't help but wonder about all of the high reviews because not only are the ideas not new (some even directly lifted from others like Jim Collins), the writing style is so flippant ("Come closer to the book, no closer, SLAM! now I've slapped you with my leather glove") and sometimes even offensive (joke about suicide I found in poor taste), but it's so much longer than it needs to be. Surely this could have been a pamphlet.I am not someone who knows him or was given a copy of this book. I paid for it with my own money and I wish I had it back. I liked his Profit First book and used it. It had a similar writing style, but I don't think it was as bad as this. The Pumpkin Plan book wasn't as good as Profit First, but this one is nowhere near the value the others are. Do not buy this expecting it to teach you how to do anything other than tell other people to do your work. If those other people don't exist, this book will be of no/very little use to you.
Clockwork gives you all the tools to set up your business to run itself. I have worked with the author since 2016 as we put these processes to work in my business. Mike is my business coach and I received an advance copy of the book. It is spot on. It is actionable and fun in Mike's typical style. By following his advice and determining my queen bee role, I was able to focus on what only I could do and maiximize my impact. The team developed to fill the other roles and it set us up to grow. The 4 D's helped us understand and truly delegate tasks. These are just two examples that set us up for success in the 4 week vacation goal that he described in the book. I just got back from our vacay and it was amazing for me personally. I came.back renewed and clear in my purpose. I was surprised at the way my team had grown and was taking ownership of the business. This the ultimate reward. This book gives you all the tools to make it happen for you!
Using the principles in Clockwork allowed me to step away from the business and not worry. You've heard of The 4-hour Workweek? Well, this is a manual for the entrepreneur's 4-Week Vacation.For nearly 10 years, I ran a business as a solopreneur. Partly, I never wanted employees. Partly, I thought that I was hot stuff and never wanted to turn over that "talent" to others. Then last year, I saw the author Mike Michalowicz deliver a presentation at the QuickBooks Connect conference last year, where he introduced the concept of the "Queen Bee" role. To be honest, it felt familiar, especially when he divulged the 4 D's -- A system of delegating everything in your business (even if that means delegating to yourself). It's a way of setting up systems that empowers everyone to be their best possible self.That's when I realized that I was ready to grow with this kind of system in place. I realized that not having this system meant that I wasn't trusting my employees to do the right thing, with or without me (preferably without). That tied me to my business. I couldn't take a vacation, not really, because I was always worried that I'd have fires to put out. I thought that I was the only one that could get it done. I was wrong, and this book proved it to me.FWIW (and some full disclosure), Mike has also been a friend/mentor/coach of mine since the launch of his other books, Profit First and The Pumpkin Plan. And this book really is the next step in the evolution of those for any business owner. Yes, I had an early copy of the book and concepts, so I've been able to test a few of them. There are still things I'm working on. The concepts, however familiar or not, are laid out beautifully in Clockwork and have taught me that it's even better when your team doesn't need you for every decision.
I purchased this book on a recommendation from my business Mastermind group. My husband and I had read Mike's "Profit First" and it's made a huge difference in the life of our business, so purchasing his next book was a no brainer! I am about halfway through the book, and it's already made an immediate impact on our business decisions.Over the past year, I had started feeling burned out as an entrepreneur. As a business owner, I am managing a team of 10 (or 11? or 12? how many team members do I have now?), and it was becoming unwieldy. I'd already taken the step of hiring an operations manager, but as an entrepreneur I was still unsure of how to organize my business so that I can take days off or extended vacations. Enter "Clockwork!"My favorite part of the book so far is that each chapter has an action step that Mike encourages you to take immediately. For example, in the first chapter, he encourages you to email him your commitment to taking action. I did so, and he actually wrote me back! In another chapter, he tells you to download free worksheets to use in a time-tracking exercise for one week. I am three days into tracking my time, and it's already giving me really great insight into how I spend my time on my business. In another chapter, he gives you an exercise to do with your team. My staff members and I met on Zoom, and together we did the post-it note exercise. We all agreed that it was incredibly insightful, and we are all 100% committed to protecting and nurturing the new "Queen Bee Role" of our business. Getting my staff on board with this Clockwork plan has been a completely unexpected bonus of implementing this book.Tip: give yourself permission to read one chapter at a time and absorb it and follow through, before moving on to the next. I'm reading about 2 chapters per week about this pace, and I'm gaining so much from the process.
