Many publishers have sets of "high-low" books intended for older readers with limited reading skills but these do not follow the principles of the Orton-Gillingham-based reading programs - systematic, highly structured, recursive in its presentation of skills taught, and with progress predicated on mastery of the current level of skills being taught. Now, Pamela Brookes has created DOG ON A LOG Chapter Books that follow an incremental, phonics-based pattern and work well with O-G based programs.These wonderful little books have "chapters," so that students feel that the books are a bit more sophisticated. Another advantage of these books is that they have just enough pictures to increase interest in the stories but not so many as to allow the reader to get the story from the pictures. My child needed an ongoing supply of systematic phonics booksthat use an Orton-Gllingham approach. This proved to be a nearly impossible,expensive task so I decided to write them myself. I want toshare our books with new readers and their families. I also want to make themaffordable. All books are available in both digital and paper editions. Themost cost effective version is a digital collection of five same-step books.The paperback version of the five book collections is a bit more, but is stilla lost less expensive than buying the individual paper books. Due to productioncosts, the individual paperbacks are the most expensive way to buy these books.However, these books give kids a chance to hold a book and say, "I readthis WHOLE book." Since every family will have different needs anddifferent budgets, I am making the books available in multiple formats. All thepaperbacks have black and white pictures to keep prices down. The digital booksall have color pictures.     As ourreading journey progresses I will continue to write books for my daughter andto share them with other families. I was notgoing to include artwork because that is not my talent. However, my daughterwas adamant she wanted her books to include pictures. I may not be able todraw, but I can photoshop images so I take public domain images and adapted toeach story. I am grateful to the artists who have made their images availablefor public domain uses. Bought this for my friend's child. He was able to read it with some help from Mom. Funny stories that made them laugh. They liked it so much that she's going to buy the chapter books.
I have a 9 year old with Dyslexia. He always tells people he can't read. He is starting to though, it just takes him awhile to figure out the word, and to have the confidence to try. We love these books!!! The author has really done her research and created stories that a beginning, struggling reader can read! So many times we would go to our library and grab a beginner book with simple words, but then the book would add some very difficult words that had nothing to do with the sound we were working on. My son was able to pick this up and read each story! The look of amazement on his face was priceless😻 I highly recommend these books.
Grandson and Granddaughter felt successful reading on their own. Material was not overwhelming. A creative and fun way for young readers to build confidence. I would recommend this book

The explanations are mediocre. The Dan Fullerton book has better explanations. Also does not contain many practice questions. There are some decent discussion in some places but that's about it. The Dan Fullerton book for reading and explanations and a textbook (Giancoli) for conceptual questions and problems along with something like Albert.IO and past exams for practice seems to be the better way to to go. Also use TIPERS for concepts building. I am really not sure why Reddit goes Gung Ho about this 5 steps book.
The content of the book is good. Good review questions, includes most everything you need to know, and simplifies the practice test process.However, do not expect to receive "Cross-Platform Content" with the Kindle version. There is no front or back cover on the ebook and therefore you do not get a digital access code. I talked to 3 forms of Amazon customer service and 3 forms of McGraw Hill customer service, with both telling me that it was the other company's fault. Do not expect a third practice test or other preparation materials. To be safe, just buy a physical copy to make sure you get a code and save yourself the aggravation.

I would give this review zero stars if I could. This is not a legit book but rather some bound version of a combo typed/xerox copy of the original, made in the USA, San Bernardino, California, 25 June 2017, 3 days ago, upon my order apparently.This was going to be a gift for a 9 year old looking to engage further in chapter reading. No longer.I thought a rollicking pirate adventure, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth, might be fun. This poor replica is anything but fun...the cover is pixelated and the illustration plates are muddied grays, and I haven't even addressed how a 9-year old is going to try to read the disjointed copy spacing and chapter headings, as well as typos and misspellings. Please see photos.On top of this my copy was bent and sticky, go figure packing crew.100% dissatisfied long-term Amazon customer.
Excellent book; terrible quality edition that isn't at all as described. The cover is such a terrible quality copy it's clearly pixellated (attaching photo). The formatting inside is awful - hard to distinguish where new paragraphs start, spacing is all over the place.The editorial reviews quoted on the product listing refer to "easily accessible, bottom-of-the-page notes provide outstanding illumination of the text s literary and historical contexts, particularly biblical and nautical references that might otherwise elude modern readers. No other edition provides a better insight into the (sometimes murky) compositional processes behind this classic work of fiction." -- this is completely untrue, there are no notes at all. Another editorial review states "Sutherland finishes the edition with a series of puzzles and conundrums raised by the story; these are bound to stimulate discussion in a seminar setting." Also completely untrue, there is no appendix at all, the book simply finishes at the end of the story.I could produce a better quality edition of this book by self-publishing. Will be returning this book ASAP. Buy a different edition.
I just finished reading this terrific story on Kindle (ASIN: B00LP34EKI). Since Amazon lumps together all reviews for similarly titled products I've included the ASIN number so you know which version of this book I'm referring to. There are 10 illustrations and photos at the very end of the book. Only three are about this story with the rest being various photos of the author as a child, a young man, etc. You can do a lot better just by doing an image search "Treasure Island". I won't rehash the story here since it's quite well known by everyone already or at least the framework of the story is.Some of the nautical terms and pirate jargon in the story were unfamiliar to me and I found the CliffNotes Treasure Island Glossary to be very useful in understanding them. It defines terms like alow and aloft; assizes; dead-eye; my cock, as in rooster and meaning a fine young man (that one tripped me up for a few seconds) and many others. Amazon won't let me post a link to it so just do a search for "Full Glossary for Treasure Island - CliffsNotes". It'll probably be the first hit in the list and it's free.There are many images on the Web for Treasure Island. I did a Search for 'Treasure Island Map' and I found one that helped in getting a better idea of where action was taking place. I hope you enjoy the story and if you have young children why not read it aloud with them.By the way, if you want to see the film I highly recommend you watch the 1950 Disney version starring Robert Newton as Long John Silver. One RottenTomatoes critic said this; "Newton's Long John Silver is the ultimate buccaneer, a one-legged, squinty-eyed blackguard so piratical he even concludes a prayer with a hammy 'Ahhhhhrrrmen...'" And Silver could also be the most charming, silver-tongued devil around when it suited him.Enjoy
Treasure Island was written 130 years ago and it remains one of the great adventure tales of all time. I originally read it when I was about ten years old and, fifty years later, I recently re-read it in the Kindle edition. The fact that the book brings as much pleasure now as it did then is an indication of how good it really is. Stevenson truly hit the ball out of the park with this one.Much has been remarked in many of these critiques about the outdated language Stevenson used. In that regard, I have to say that the Kindle edition that I downloaded lacks one thing that was included in my old printed edition, which was published by MacMillan way back in 1924. The old edition has a set of notes following the text, explaining a lot of the nautical terms and old-fashioned jargon. It even includes the complete lyrics to "A Bottle of Rum". I never found those notes necessary but they might prove useful to some of the younger readers, to whom such language might be unfamiliar. Personally, I think the language is part of what has given this tale it's lasting appeal. In addition, I don't know whether 18th Century pirates really spoke the way Stevenson has them speak in Treasure Island, but there is no doubt that it is the way they will forever be remembered, "...and ye may lay to that, Matey"!

Sandra Becker really wrote a book Amish Christmas that could really put a scare into a person if they were going though a tough time and they were not sure what could happen if they didn't have the nervous to ask for help. Losing a parent or even a friend can really be tough, because you are not sure what people want out of you at the time, they some times think everyone should know how to act an what they should be doing, this is not true being young you would look to a older person an a elderly person would just be so lost knowing that they were not alone for ever. Abraham lost his dad an he found people just starring at him and not saying anything. He tried to pray but was getting the feeling he was all on his own with no place to turn. Then one of the elders talked to him but still had no answers an he got to think of the town close were the English lived an he not being really sure left home to go see if the answers would come there. Now it is up to everyone to get the book and find out how things really turned out and see if they learned some thing from it. Now it is time to send a message to the author tell her how much you liked and what the story taught you, then please make a review to let others know what lesson can be learned. Also tell your friends about the book.
I liked the story, because it's about finding your way back to God after losing a love one and not understanding why God took them away. I have been there.Sandra writing shows you so much faith in God and prayer and love she has for God. I love her books and will continue reading them.I highly recommend this book a sweet Christmas story about forgiveness and love for God and how he shows us mercy and grace everyday.

an excellent book for the gardener who doesn't want to rely on pesticides. Written by the University of California, Davis, this book is a must for integrating IPM into your gardening. An easily read book, it is written for the casual home gardener as well as the professional landscape worker. A must for any Master Gardener working with the public. I use my copy for reference at my local Master Gardener booth at the year-round Farmers' Market to help answer questions from the public.
This book was extremely useful for me as I have done several internships with chemical companies in helping Pest Control Advisers in identifying pests; the book itself shows a great amount of bugs with great pictures. It was a lot cheaper than at my university bookstore and I definitely recommend buying the hardcover.

This would be a great book for students studying insects & large scale farmers needing to correctly identify an insect pest. Loads of pictures both color and black & white. Nice insect profiles. For people growing backyard gardens it can help identify insect pest; however, does not provide info on attracting the beneficials or any lists of plants to attract beneficials. Not quite what I was looking for being a backyard gardener; but will be helpful identifying insects,
use it often in the office.

This short book, 67 pages of actual text, is an articulate, lyrical, and inspirational guide to the prayer of inward silence and stillness as practiced in the Quaker tradition. It is a practical book rather than theological or argumentative. That is to say it is an actual manual that individuals can use to put this type of prayer into practice. For Quakers, it is a great resource. For non-Quakers it is a valuable addition to the practice of contemplation which you may want to integrate into your own contemplative practice.The author, David Johnson, by using numerous quotations from early Quaker sources, places the prayer of inward silence at the heart of the Quaker tradition. Johnson has clearly spent much time with these early sources and is able to present the essence of the method of the prayer of inward silence in a way that is accessible. His writing is easy to follow, clear, and the instructions will benefit both newcomers and those who have engaged in this style of prayer for many years.I also appreciate how Johnson embeds this type of prayer in a Christian context. There are frequent scriptural citations, particularly from the Gospel of John, but other parts of the Bible are referenced as well. And the tradition of apophatic prayer in Christianity is brought in by referencing such works as `The Cloud of Unknowing'. I think this is especially important today because among some Quakers there is a tendency to diminish the centrality of Christianity for this type of prayer practice and, among a few, for the Quaker tradition in general. At the same time, Johnson judiciously notes certain commonalities the prayer of inward silence found in the Quaker tradition has with other types of practice, including passing references to non-Christian practices found in, for example, Buddhism. Yet the presentation is appropriately weighted towards the tradition out of which Quaker prayer practice emerged -- Christianity.`A Quaker Prayer Life' in many ways reminds me of `A Guide to True Peace'. Both of them are manuals, guides, for the prayer of inward silence in the Quaker tradition. For both of these works the primary focus is instruction in the prayer of inward silence. The `Guide' was published in the early 1800's and, in a way, I think of Johnson's book as a kind of renewal of the message of the `Guide' for the generation of the 21st century. The `Guide' was very popular among Quaker for more than a century. One historian wrote that the `Guide' was found in every Quaker household for several generations. I would wish that the same would happen for Johnson's book for a new generation.Johnson has done the Quaker community a great service. `A Quaker Prayer Life' is a beautiful and meticulous guide to Quaker Prayer. It offers step-by-step instruction, touches on difficulties, and offers suggestions for daily practice of this type of prayer. It is a great blessing and a work that will reward frequent reading.
I must state before reviewing this book that I am a Quaker. There are many books written about Quaker history, and even some very good books about applied Quaker practice, but not very many on how, exactly, to conduct prayer in the Quaker style. I would go so far to say that this sort of prayer existed long before Judaism, in fact, so perhaps it is a bit presumptuous to call it Quaker prayer. And arguably, one does not need any books at all to learn anything, if we take what the bible says about this to be true. "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you." (1 John 2:27, NIV). Meaning, by surrendering to the guiding work of the Spirit of the Eternal Christ, the Holy Spirit, one can be taught all things without relying on other human beings, who are sometimes correct, and sometimes less than correct.And I must state that I learned prayer in this method, that is to say, from the Spirit. I couldn't really explain it to someone else since I learned prayer without the necessity of words. Upon reading Johnson's essay on prayer life, I must say that his experience of prayer is exactly like my experience of prayer, he just has been gifted with the ability to actually explain it. This is just further confirmation for me that our experiences arise from the same Eternal Source. I highly recommend this work to anyone, Quaker or not, who wishes to explore this peaceful, abiding, and centering method of prayer. O you gentle pilgrim of love, "ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls" (Jeremiah 6:16, NIV).
No Quaker literature speaks for all Quakers, but this is simply a good book, that I have enjoyed, and would buy again. Well written by an intelligent, insightful author who knows how to look inside oneself, and understand what one sees there.
If you are interested in learning how to sit in loving stillness with God, I highly recommend this book. In reading it, I have underlined many sections so that I can go back and reread them. My background is Protestant, and I am not a Quaker, but I found much wisdom here and believe it would be helpful to anyone who is truly seeking to know and love God in an intimate way.

This year, those of us who always gravitated to the picture books on library day have had two reasons to celebrate. Edward Tufte published his third magnificent work, Visual Explanations, and Richard Saul Wurman has favored us with this beautifully produced edition.First and foremost, this book is about sheer visual delight. The delight we get when we discover new facts and relationships revealed in graphic ways by the information architects presented.White text on black backgrounds notwithstanding, (See another review elsewhere in this section. I don''t find it difficult for my 45 year old eyes to follow) Wurman has the good sense to resort to extremely high quality design and printing methods to compliment the books contents.Okay, after all that frothy introduction, what's this book really about? It's about information design and "the heart of a good explanation". It presents the work of 24 individuals or groups of designers, faced with a "Tsunami" of data, whose passion "is to make the complex clear."The designs range from Alexander Tsiaras' computerized photographic medical visualizations and Clement Mok's web sites to David McCaulay's insightful freehand sketches and finished drawings. The presentation of the evolution of McCaulay's book, Underground, gave me the chills. I felt plugged into his brain as the concept develped into the finished book.This book, like it's contents, is about discovery. The "rediscovery" of Richard Curtis' work for USA Today and Don Moyer's work for the Steelcase furniture catalogs are recognized for the style and clarity they brought to those media.This is a book that I return to often both for it's sheer beauty and because each time I return, something new is revealed in it's illustrations.Based on my experience with this book, I picked up Wurman's Access travel guide to Boston before a recent trip. Another revelation and very a well presented visual guide. I'll check for Wurman's Access guides before taking any more trips.This book earns my highest recommendation (could you tell?)

In it I found a collection of some good responses (from press, to brochures, websites, interactive CDs, etc) to complex communicational problems, even when not all of them satisfy my aesthetic expectations, each work must be understood as "for who is it made", "in what media it will reproduce" and "what wishes to communicate". This book isn't a hip catalogue of what's cool, trendy or fashionable. The only short come of the book is that the comments are "just that" in most of the examples.
I was very disapointed when I read this book. I am a professional graphic designer and very interested in information design. This book is a paradox. A book about information design wrapped in ugly design. It is too big, too selfabsorbed and seems to be oldfashioned too. A group og designerfriend padding eathother on the shoulders. It is not woth buying, however the book: "Information Anxiety by the same author is great, but has ugly confusing design too, -I dont understand why!
