In 2007, Hugh was selected as inaugural Environmental Practitioner of the Year for Australia and New Zealand and, in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant services to the environment and conservation. Co-author John Byers is a retired police officer who currently operates a beef cattle farm in south-eastern Victoria along with a duck call manufacturing business. A passionate waterfowl hunter and observer for more than 45 years, John has studied game birds and wetlands in the field across Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A. and Canada. Since 1977, he has been a Member of Field and Game Australia, the country's premier waterfowl conservation organisation, and Secretary of its Sale Branch for the past decade. La autora tiene un ego enorme; habla y habla de sus viajes, su piel perfecta, sus piernas, su ropa de diseñador, de gastarse $20k en compras con el dinero que Escobar le daba, etc. ¿Acaso no le pasó por la mente la sangre derramada para obtener esa plata? ¿Cómo es posible que indique, en varias ocasiones, que no veÃa noticias ni prensa, siendo ELLA una periodista? Se entera de las cosas que pasan en su paÃs cuando regresa de sus viajes o cuando alguien la llama para contarle. Todos los ricos de Colombia, Alemania, Francia, y Londres de esa época eran parientes, sus “amigos de toda la vidaâ€, o sus pretendientes.Para alguien cuya vida corrÃa peligro a diario, tal y como relata acerca de las llamadas telefónicas, las amenazas, y los problemas financieros, tiene una memoria increÃble.La historia de cuando se va a la isla y nadaba en 3 horas de un extremo al otro, me parece exageradÃsima, y le resta credibilidad al libro.Los secretos y las confidencias parecen, en su gran mayorÃa, suplidas por Garganta Profunda, y ella se las acredita como pertenecientes a conversaciones con ‘su Almanegra’. El resto del libro es acerca de la vida ‘chic’ que tuvo hasta que la embarró metiéndose con el capo.

Lo que es fascinante es su valentÃa, como con lujo de detalles describe su relación con Pablo. Se necesita tener mucho valor para admitir y contar esos históricos momentos que desangraron a la bella Colombia! Una excelente narrativa, cuando empiezas a leer el libro no puedes dejarlo, me tomo dos noches terminarlo, me intrigaba toda la corrupción que rodeaba al gobierno Colombiano, con narcos paras y guerrilleros; sospecho que las cosas no han cambiado mucho.Por ultimo, por favor no compren el libro pirata que ha salido al Mercado y Amazon lo esta vendiendo también, no se por que razón?El libro pirata es de tapa roja, la portada es una baratija, nada que ver con el original que esta hecho con el buen gusto y elegancia que destaca a la autora. I bought this book for my own entertainment and information. I'm a Colombian who has been away from my country for over 50 years.So, I don't keep up-to-date with the things that happen over there. I like the book in general. It was well written even though the themeof the book is so brutal and sad. Hope Virginia Vallejo is having a more peaceful and happy life away from all that tragic relationshipshe had with Escobar. The past is dead and should remain that way. Una historia escalofriante, llena de amor,intrigas, odio y maldad. Una historia q confirma mi teorÃa de que la realidad supera siempre la ficción. He quedado con sentimiento de angustia y ala vez,de agradecimiento con los que hacen posible que el mal no triunfe. Con una profunda solidaridad por mis amigos colombianos que me han contado tantas historias sobre esta época oscura de su paÃs por el flagelo del narcotráfico. Se lo recomiendo a todo aquel que dude de las consecuencias de una mala decisión, por q esta historia es básicamente,la crónica de una joven que creyo, en su absoluto egocentrismo,poder jugar con fuego y no quemarse. Un libro que me mantuvo pegada a él desde su inicio y que no pude soltar hasta que lo termine.

Mickey Cohen certainly was a product of his time. Edward G. Robinson only played LITTLE CAESAR on screen, Cohen was the real thing. He was made to measure for dominating the crime in and around Hollywood. From fixing prize fights and horse races to shaking down movie stars and politicians.Then there are the six murders that he freely admits to, not counting all those he doesn't own up to. Still, ask any waiter, car hop or bell boy and they're all tell you what a great guy he was -or rather a great tipper.Mickey Cohen fitted right in with LA. His exploits commanded the front pages and gossip columns of the day. Brad Lewis' book is well researched, but for me not all the loose ends were tied together. Cohen's relationships with his bosses -the mob, are detailed better in Gus Russo's book SUPERMOB.
A great read. Brad Lewis, the author, has really done his research on the surge of gang life in the early and middle Twentieth Century with regard to Mickey Cohen in particular and the various inter-relationships of the ethnicity of gangs in general. SMS
When most people hear the word "gangster", Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel or Meyer Lansky spring to mind. These were brilliant, charismatic, ruthless men who built financial empires on the backs of illegal activities, and often, other peoples misery.I had never thought of Mickey Cohen as a first rate gangster of the magnitude of the aforementioned, but in reading this book, it is clear that he cut a wide swath through twentieth century American history.The book is well written, although details of Cohen's life remain surprisingly sketchy. The author never does get a handle on where Cohen's opulent wealth comes from, although he does hint that prostitution and gambling are it's main source.Cohen and Benny Siegel moved from East Coast to West to capture the vice at the request of Meyer Lansky, and each had a storied career. Siegel's has been told many times. Cohen's, normally as an adjunct to Siegel's.This book makes clear that Cohen's life and influence far surpassed "Bugsy's". Cohen not only controlled much of the traditional vice along the West Coast, he had in's with Senators, Presidents, Hollywood icons, and even The Reverend Billy Graham.Through it all he comes off as an upstanding, decent, and charismatic person.He survived up to twelve attempted "hits", two extended prison stays, and not least, two marriages.He is a piece of American folklore I would like to know more about, and for anyone who feels the same, this book is an excellent chronicle of a twentieth century enigma.
Facinating, well-researched book. I could hardly put it down because it was such an easy read, too. What a ruthless, up-by-the-bootstraps bad apple. Though largely a sociopathic personality who thrived in the underworld, he achieved far more than a man of short stature and unimpressive social skills might be expected.
Very well written.This book will hold your interest.It not only shows you the brutal side of Mickey Cohen but also shows the human side.
SINCE I KN EW MR. COHEN THIS WAS QUITE A READ......NOT PARTICULARLY ACCURATE.....WISH I COULD HAVE TALKED TO THE AUTHOR BEFORE HAND BECAUSE QUITE A FEW MISTAKES WERE MADE....BUT ENJOYED NONTHE LESS.....
