This book is terrible. I can't believe my class required it. Chapters are incredibly long and you flip between information that is very fluffed / not useful for the examples given to incredibly dense examples that take multiple re-reads to even begin to understand. Additionally, the thing is RIDDLED with typos that make doing work almost impossible. Multiple times in a chapter I will have the textbook reference something like "See figure 6.17a" only for figure 6.17a to not exist!A typo here and there or grammatical issues is one thing, but pointing students to non existent figures while requiring them to solve problems that need referencing of those figures is unforgivable. This is easily the worst textbook I've used in my university career.
I'm afraid I have to agree with most of the reviewers here: this book is horrible. Unfortunately, it's required for my class. In order to actually understand most of the subject matter, I have to constantly refer to other books, YouTube videos, Google searches, and homework help services. It seems the authors are trying to cram too much information into one book, with the result that they are covering all of the information very badly. My recommendation would be to cut down on the variety of information presented and cover fewer topics well.
Using this book for a graduate course. As other reviewers have stated its a really rough read and at times difficult to follow. Agree with others that this book needs to be better edited for content and clarity. Would not recommend as a reference book.
I personally liked this text.It is not perfect, and some sections should be more elaborated, but otherwise it is rather informative.Covers boolean algebra, logic gates, memory organization, and many other good things.It can't be read quickly. You will have to spend time to read carefully.Positive: for the most part questions for each chapter can be answered based on information in the book. In my life I have encountered text where there were NO way questions could be answered based solely on the info in the text. So, if you getting this text for class, it is good news.Negative: I feel that some sections could be elaborated more with further examples. For instance binary divisions and multiplications would be better with couple more examples.I feel like I didn't waste time reading it, so you too could learn something from it (unless of course you already know the subject well...).
This book is ok, but sometimes does not do a great job at more detailed explanations. It seems to really only be meant for introductions into the topics where when the student gets to class, the professor goes into more detail. Honestly after mid-terms I stopped reading it but it is a good reference and the MARIE language developed by the authors is really useful to introduce students to assembly type languages.
The chapters provide a general overview of ideas/topics but the questions at the end of the chapter are very detail intensive. Probably the second worst book I have ever come across in my entire life. Know that if the book is required, you will be using other sources to actually learn the material to do the homework. Good luck.
Thorough, well-written, highly technical textbook. Presented the detailed information I was looking for with a lot of helpful examples and diagrams. Really not sure why it's gotten such poor reviews here. Sure, some of the information is complicated and dry -- but that's the nature of the subject matter.
I would give it a five star if it's a book from Wikibooks. Lots of overly detailed facts, historical information, mediocre but acceptable formatting, and excessive citations - everything you would expect from a community sourced textbook.But this is a published textbook with a price tag of over 200 dollars. And only minutes into reading the book, I got terribly frustrated. Some of the problems the book has, which I've discovered after reading the first chapter, are as follows:1. The book uses very low quality images. On Page 9, there is even a picture taken from Wikipedia! Being printed in black and white, it is near impossible to see what's actually on the picture. (It is a photo of a motherboard with blurry annotations that you cannot read). And on Page 27, there is a picture that seemed taken by a cellphone camera. What's bothering me is that the book actually uses professional illustrations as well. Why do they allow low quality images to be used when they have access to professional artists, who could easily draw a much better illustration than a low resolution photo.2. The typography of this book is rather bad. If they could use a smaller font size that most college-level textbooks would use, the near 900-page book would probably be only half as thick. The formatting is so minimal that you will have no idea if you are reading a new section or just a sub-section. Important concepts are not highlighted properly, while random words are put in bold for no apparent reasons.3. It seems that whoever wrote the exercise questions did not read the book at all. Questions are irrelevant to what's covered in the chapter, and sometimes require you to Google the answer - the book just mentions nothing about what the question's asking.4. Also it seems that whoever wrote the answers for the exercise questions did not read the questions at all. The answer to exercise 8 in Chapter 1 seems just plain wrong.However, it is a solid book - it holds my coffee mug without deformation, even after hours of use.

With so few pages in this book, it seems as if the authors went out of their way to include several instances of nudity. This book would be much better with more great works included, and no nudity. Not worth the price, and not very engaging compared to other children’s art books.
This is a great book! I am homeschooling and we focus on one artist a week. This was the perfect supplement to my lessons. I would recommend to any parent or educator.
My daughter takes an art class and loves to draw. I bought this book for Christmas and she just rolled her eyes. But we read about one artist an evening. The information tidbits about the artist are very interesting and one of their major works described. Each artist gets about 2-3 pages, just enough to interest my daughter but not overwhelm her. And I have learned as well! I recommend this book for budding artist who should know about the major artist and their contributions to the history of art. Excellent book.
This book is unreadable because of pages printed on top of each other. Sadly, I kept it for six months before reading do I can’t return it.
The text (inside of the book) is written in german! We didn't realize this until we opened the book. It is beyond the returns window so we now have a german book that no one can read.
One of my favorite books for my daycare children. We do an art theme every year, and this book is key! In our themed week, I include this book as well as ones covering just the specific artists. Its a great book to have... one your children will love!
I wanted to introduce my granddaughter to a variety of artists and she enjoys it. I wish there were fewer "modern" artists and thus the 4 stars.
My aspiring artist (age 6 1/2) loved this book. Yes, she laughed and giggled at the nudity but got over it quickly and is enjoying the content and artwork.

Michael A. Sayette, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also serves on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the Center for the Neural Bases of Cognition, a joint program of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Sayette has published primarily in the area of substance abuse, with a focus on the development of psychological theories of alcohol and tobacco use. Dr. Sayette is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He has served on National Institutes of Health grant review study sections and is on the editorial boards of several journals. He also has served as an associate editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Dr. Sayette is director of graduate studies in the psychology department at the University of Pittsburgh and has directed graduate admissions for the clinical psychology program. He has presented seminars on applying to graduate school at several universities in North America and Europe. John C. Norcross, PhD, ABPP, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Scranton, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, and a board-certified clinical psychologist. Can’t believe I never heard of this before. It was recently recommended to me by a professor at Cal. This is like “College Board†for psychology graduate schools, all in one inexpensive book. In just two hours I now have a list of 19 schools I’m interested in, ranked by cost, admission rate, and APA internship placement. Amazing.
I love this book, it lists every school for what I would like to do in one place and breaks down what their program is like along with tons of supplemental resources to make a truly informed decision. Best buy ever! And a great reccomendation by one of the chairs in my psych department.

It’s not meant to be an academic treatise, but rather a kind of enjoyable 'tapas' of many amazing societies that you wouldn’t believe exist if there weren’t documented evidence.
With a light-hearted look at a serious subject, Dr. Brodman deftly entertains and informs her readers about surprising sexual practices. This could have been a dry academic study, but instead reads more like a series of incisive anthropological sketches each of which reminds us to take note of our common needs while appreciating our differences. Maps and photographs help orient readers.
This was a completely delightful read... I found myself laughing out loud and wishing I could read snippets of it to someone else and share the hilarity. Brodman is deft in pointing out various customs that we in the western world might find strange, but without ever denigrating anyone else's take on sexual practices and activities. Part anthropology, part sociology, part travelogue, it's a tongue-in-cheek look at the way the rest of the world views gender, sexuality, and institutions like courtship and marriage. Readers might find themselves surprised at how societies that they might never have even heard of look at gender roles in ways that are far more "advanced" than what we in the west consider norms. We certainly have a lot to learn from others. Definitely recommended, and especially if you're traveling, as it can be read in small snippets of mirth!
I thought this book was incredibly clever, from the title page, on. I’ve traveled all over the world and particularly like places that are very different from the US. I never bumped into any of these cultures, but wish I had! The book was a really enjoyable and “easy read†intro to some very strange ideas about sex and marriage. Who knew there are so many places where women call the shots about sex. It motivated me to dig more deeply into some that I thought are especially interesting. My boyfriend, who is also widely traveled, also read my copy and said it’s one of the funniest and most interesting books he’s read.
Fun little "bathroom reader" of quick facts - well researched but also not academic. I purchased for my library in my counseling office - I will probably give as a gift instead, after reading.

I Like this book. I purchased this book to use as training material with clients and it has been a wonderful tool so far. My clients seem to enjoy the example dialogue included in the book to illustrate communication skills and this then makes it easier to get the willing to role play those skills themselves. Great book!
